Richard Walsh01-Jun-2002Somerset fast bowler Richard Johnson, who has been missing from the scene for several weeks through injury,is looking well set to make his first team return for the county in their next NUL Division One National League match against Warwickshire on Sunday June 9th.When I spoke to Richard at the County Ground he told me: "I’m very hopeful for the game at Edgbaston on June 9th, and the way that my recovery programme is progressing I can’t see any reason why I won’t be playing."The former Middlesex man, who was the leading county championship wicket taker for the Cidermen in 2001 continued: "I’m bowling two times everyday in the nets and now I am incorporating some longer spells. Everything is geared up for me to return at Edgbaston.Meanwhile Somerset chief executive Peter Anderson has confirmed that Somerset will play Hampshire in the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy on Wednesday June 19th at the County Ground. The Somerset boss told me earlier today: "We were relieved to win our match against the Yorkshire Board XI, which was a potential banana skin for us, to earn a home tie with Hampshire in the next round which will be played on June 19th. Lets hope that what happened at this stage of the competition in 2001 happens again this year and that we can get back to our winning one day form."

West Ham fans on Caleta-Car transfer

Some West Ham United fans have been left delighted as a transfer update emerged on Duje Caleta-Car.

As per The Athletic, the East London club are set to re-enter in the race to sign the Marseille central defender once the summer transfer window opens.

Although David Moyes’ team were very impressive in the Premier League in the 2020/21 term, finishing in sixth spot, they conceded no fewer than 47 goals in total, which was more than Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Brighton and Hove Albion, who all finished below them in the table (BBC Sport).

Thus, a new centre-back will be needed in order to bolster the defence, especially given that they will be playing in the UEFA Europa League as well.

Caleta-Car could well fit the bill, given his monster six-foot-three frame, which would be useful in both boxes in the top flight and in Europe, as well as coming off the back of an impressive Ligue 1 season in which he won 3.7 of his duels per match and averaged an impressive 3.9 clearances and 1.3 interceptions per game too (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, he is certainly a player that some members of the London Stadium faithful seemingly want to see come through the door.

Little Ashraful should be watchful

The youngest Test centurion in the history of the game is undergoing a bad patch

Shahryar Khan06-Jun-2002The youngest Test centurion in the history of the game is undergoing a bad patch. Mohammed Ashraful, the diminutive all rounder, who notched up a swashbuckling 114 in his debut against Sri Lanka last year, is passing his hard days after his rose-rimmed beginning. The next Test he played was against Zimbabwe where he failed to make a mark, neither with his willow nor with his occasional leg-spin. Ashraful was dynamic in his approach against Sri Lanka when he found that memorable hundred against them, but later he was found too smart in his style when it came to deal with the great bowlers of the game. He forgot that all big innings don’t come from belligerent stroke play like he did in Colombo – sometimes an attacking batsman has to go to the shell for survival.Often we saw Ashraful gifted his wicket while attempting a risky shot completely unwanted at that moment. He pulled off once in the moment of crisis (That 114), but such success wasn’t repeated for the next 4 Tests he played. From his the next few innings, we can reckon his 33 in the Test against Zimbabwe in Chittagong to be a first-rate innings. There is another Sri Lanka tour again and Bangladeshis will be glad to see if Ashraful carried off another ton just like before. The kid is talented they know and can deal Murlitharan with skill. Mindful that Sri Lankans were rather lenient while Ashraful was on his way to the three-figure mark (I am not belittling his success). The Lankans knew that they were going to wrap up Bangladesh soon, so they focused at the other end where wickets were falling at regular interval. All I want to say that Ashraful is yet to have the experience to bat under real pressure. He must learn to get rid of his superfluous smartness, because often it causes his debacle. He must be working on this flaw in the upcoming tour!

Leeds transfer target Urhoghide can leave

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has been handed a major boost in his club’s chase for Sheffield Wednesday defender Osaze Urhoghide.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks and months have suggested that Bielsa is very much interested in luring the 20-year-old to Elland Road, and now The Star have delivered a major update on his future.

They reported that, amid uncertainty at Hillsborough, and Wednesday’s inability to offer the financial package he could get elsewhere, Urhoghide looks set to be on his way out of Hillsborough when his contract expires this summer.

The report added: “The Star understands that Urhoghide has not yet made a final decision on where he will be playing his football next season, but has put regular first team football and stability on the top of his wish list rather than financial gain – with several clubs at various levels banging down the door to try and get him on board.”

He silenced Bielsa and Elland Road

After a win over Barnsley in March, Owls manager Darren Moore heaped praise on the “immense” 1.88m (6 foot 2) defender, telling The Star: “I don’t like to pick out individuals because I thought they were all excellent, but he was immense today in terms of his performance. In terms of his contacts, in terms of getting in the radar of the opponents and spoiling it – he was absolutely rock solid.

“The back three will take plaudits, and it was a team effort, but if you’re looking at him as an individual I thought his performance was solid today.”The talented 20-year-old would surely have already caught Bielsa’s eye when Leeds took on Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road back in January 2020, when the Owls turned up at the home of their Yorkshire rivals and clinched an impressive 2-0 victory over the Whites.Urhoghide, who was playing at right-back on the day, looked particularly impressive, snuffing out Jack Harrison with ease and being a physically dominant presence. As per Sofascore, he won a team-high seven duels and three tackles, while he also came up with three clearances and one interception, showing his all-round defensive strength. It wasn’t just going back towards his own goal where he really stood out either, with the 20-year-old also showing really promising signs further forward as he completed three out of his four attempted dribbles (only Jacob Murphy had more) and drew one foul.Urhoghide was an absolute monster at both ends of the pitch in that 2-0 win at Elland Road, and it’s no surprise that Leeds have been linked with a move for him.[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/leeds-united-marcelo-bielsa-transfer-gossip-rumours-news-elland-road-rodrigo-de-paul” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]Now that he’s set to leave on a free transfer, Bielsa has the perfect chance to land him this summer.Meanwhile, a journalist has spoken about Leeds’ “big priority” this summer…

Ben White can be Arsenal’s next Tony Adams

Arsenal are the latest club to enter the transfer race for Ben White this summer…

What’s the word?

According to The Mirror, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has become a big admirer of the Brighton and England centre-back, but he’s set to face stern competition from several Premier League rivals, including Liverpool, Spurs and Manchester United.

It’s claimed that Arsenal are keen to bolster their squad in the transfer window and that funds will be made available to the 39-year-old to target key areas of improvement, in which their backline is a clear priority following the exit of David Luiz.

The Daily Mail believe the Seagulls defender’s asking price is in the region of £50m.

Shades of Tony Adams

In White, technical director Edu Gaspar could seal the Gunners their next Tony Adams – an English powerhouse fit to lead the side out from the back.

The 23-year-old centre-back has caught the eye of Premier League scouts over the past two seasons, having first impressed during a loan spell at 2020 Championship winners Leeds United before continuing that form back at parent club Brighton in the top flight last term.

He can play anywhere along the backline and even in midfield due to his composure on the ball, something which has seen him rated as the second-best ball-playing defender under Graham Potter, having averaged a passing accuracy of 83.2% throughout the 2020/21 season.

An average of 1.4 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 1.4 aerial duels won per game, via WhoScored, suggests that he’s a well-rounded centre-back who could draw further comparisons to Adams in his heyday.

“He’s so calm, nothing fazes Ben,” claimed Seagulls academy coach John Morling when speaking to The Athletic. “Any hurdles, he just jumps over. He just looks like he’s been there for years.”

He later added: “He’s a winner. You’d want him in your team.”

It’s no wonder he’s also been lauded as a “special talent” and “a warrior” too.

A fee of £50m may seem steep but there’s always a premium to pay when it comes to emerging English stars. You only have to look at the likes of Harry Maguire (£80m) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£50m) in recent windows to see that.

If Arteta wants White, then Edu must do all in his power to secure him this summer. The Gunners could well get an Adams-like presence at the back at long last if they snap up the Brighton defender.

AND in other news, Forget Buendia: Arsenal must swoop for £31.5m-rated “leader”, won’t cost KSE a penny…

Pundit can’t see Van de Beek leaving Man United for Liverpool

Liverpool are in need of a Gini Wijnaldum replacement and there is one midfielder who arrived with a lot of hype and expectations at Old Trafford. However, Donny van de Beek fell way short last season and despite this, former Liverpool star Paul Stewart can’t see the Red Devils letting one of their players go to Anfield.

Van de Beek was very impressive during Ajax’s famous Champions League run in the 2018/19 season and he was one of a few players who didn’t leave in the immediate aftermath, but despite spending another season in the Eredivisie it doesn’t appear to have helped his career.

The Dutch international was handed just four Premier League starts all season, something which would have been unimaginable when he joined for £35 million last season, and Ajax legend Sjaak Swart has claimed that Van de Beek would be wonderful for Liverpool, who are on the hunt for Wijnaldum’s successor.

Jurgen Klopp will have an extensive list of midfielders he would like to sign this summer and although Van de Beek has undoubted quality, it would be unlikely to see him turn up at Anfield, according to Stewart who spoke exclusively to Football FanCast:

“They may not want to sell him to one of their biggest rivals in Liverpool because if he turned out to be a big success then it would be a kick in the teeth for them.”

Liverpool are not the only side linked with a move for the midfielder as Arsenal have reportedly made contact about the possibility of signing the 24-year old, this comes after their pursuit of Martin Odegaard appeared to stop before it had even begun.

Van de Beek’s frustrating season was summed up and brought to an end when he picked up an injury when with the Netherlands and that ended up ruling him out of the European Championships.

Pakistan power too much for Sri Lanka

On their Independence Day, Pakistan came back into the Morocco Cup 2002 with an emphatic display of batting, and quality bowling for a comfortable win against Sri Lanka

Agha Akbar14-Aug-2002On their Independence Day, Pakistan came back into the Morocco Cup 2002 with an emphatic display of batting, and quality bowling for a comfortable win against Sri Lanka. The 28-runs separating the two teams does not quite reflect Pakistan’s dominance, apart from the brief period when Sanath Jayasuriya went after Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram with hammer and tongs.Younis Khan, awarded man of the match, and Abdul Razzaq lit up the grey skies with two cameos of such remarkable, power-packed strokeplay that took the Lankans’ breath away. Between them the two young bucks, imbued with such zest and vigour, clobbered the Lankan bowling for an unconquered even 50 off merely 22 deliveries to take the Pakistan total leap-frogging to 279. Such was the late flurry that a massive 99 runs were gathered in the last 10 overs. Saeed Anwar and Inzamam-ul-Haq had contributed solid fifties to keep the Pakistan innings on track.Chasing this stiff target, Jayasuriya, who must have regretted putting Pakistan in after winning the toss, tore into the Pakistan attack. He clubbed seven fours in his 33-ball 36, but once he was back in the pavilion, dismissed off Wasim Akram through a brilliant catch by Imran Nazir at point, none amongst the Lankans was up to the challenge. With Jayasuriya gone, the Pakistani bowlers came into their own, with Abdul Razzaq, Mohammad Sami and Shahid Afridi bowling tight spells.Backed up by some athletic fielding, Pakistan retrieved the situation considerably in the middle overs. As a result, by the end of the 30th over, Sri Lanka had reached 141/2 and the asking rate was hovering around seven runs an over. That meant conceding just 59 runs between over Nos 16 and 30, in exchange for the vital wicket of Sangakkara (38, 53 balls, five fours), topedging the pull with Wasim Akram taking a good catch at square leg.The task was getting steeper and the trio of Sami, Razzaq and Afridi was giving nothing away. Sami bowled a lively pace, mostly in the region 145 km/h, and with a lot of control. Razzaq too was spot-on, while Afridi was economy personified. This was in sharp contrast to the first-spell figures of Waqar Younis (five overs, none for 38) and Wasim Akram (six overs, one for 29).Success in stopping the flow of runs was of crucial importance, and with the asking rate consistently getting higher, the pressure and anxiety level of the Lankans was on the rise. The boundaries were scant, and progress at snail’s pace. And then wickets kept falling at regular intervals, with almost all the batsmen consuming too many deliveries for too small a contribution to the cause of the team. The pile-up was so huge that by the time 41st over began, Lankans needed 94 runs with six wickets intact. Having tightened the screws, Pakistan didn’t let up at the finish, and the Lankan batsmen had little fire in the belly to break their vice-like grip on the goings-on. Though Russel Arnold (unbeaten 37 off 37 deliveries) and Chaminda Vaas (31 off 25) struck a few boundaries, but it was too little too late. The chase that had started with such belligerence ended in a whimper.Earlier Saeed Anwar (70, off 77 deliveries, seven fours, one six) and Inzamam-ul-Haq (63, off 95 balls, four fours, two sixes) posting attractive fifties, the Lankans had things pretty much under control. That is until Younis and Razzaq went after the bowling in a tremendous display of powerful stroke-making. In the process, Chaminda Vaas and Pulsathy Gunaratne had their previously good figures destroyed. In sharp contrast to the previous match, the Pakistanis were intent on playing more organised, sensible cricket, and got the partnerships going. And though there were a few soft dismissals (Youhana, Afridi and Anwar), the innings never lost the momentum only because these came after decent gaps. With his career in serious jeopardy, Anwar made his 42nd score of 50-plus, his first major innings since his comeback. It was a cautious, workmanlike innings, yet interspersed with some vintage Anwar strokes. He predominantly scored on the off-side, as is his wont when he is not short of self-confidence.He started off with a four off Gunaratne in the covers, an exquisite drive reminiscent of his prime, lost his partner Imran Nazir, leg before to a Vaas delivery that pitched on the leg-stump and veered in to find him plumb in front. But Anwar, in partnership with Youhana, went on and on. And once Youhana (32, 55 balls, four fours) was gone, quite needlessly fiddling with a Fernando delivery outside the off-stump with Sangakkara taking the catch behind the stumps, Anwar carried on with Inzamam at the other end. After he had clouted Chandana for a six to square-leg and a four to point in the same over, the bowler finally had his revenge by getting him through an inside edge. Afridi, promoted in the order, swept Jayasuriya out of the ground but then threw caution to the winds on the first delivery after the water break against Muralitharan, hoicking it straight down the throat of widish-square-leg.Inzamam, in the meanwhile hit Chandana for a six before he got to his 62nd fifty, extending the world record for scores of 50-plus, and Murali. When he got out, the bottom edge sending the ball skywards, Younis and Razzaq came together.Younis, Pakistan’s most improved one-day batsman in recent times, was already scoring at better than a run ball. Razzaq did even better, scoring at better than two runs per delivery. Between them, they clouted four sixes and seven fours and made the last Vaas over count for 25 to take Pakistan to 279 – an extremely competitive total on a good batting wicket. It turned out to be the winning one, with the margin not much more than what Vaas conceded in his last over.

Elliott carries Yorkshire to six-wicket triumph

A half century from Peter Bowler anchored the first half of the Somerset innings in the final of the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy against Yorkshire at Lord’s

Stephen Lamb & Ralph Dellor31-Aug-2002A perfectly-paced innings of 128 by man-of-the-match Matthew Elliott has won Yorkshire the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy before a packed house at Lord’s in today’s showpiece final. Set 257 to win by last year’s winners, Yorkshire made an indifferent start before Elliott imposed himself on the contest. In the end Yorkshire won by six wickets, their first victory in this competition since 1965, to put the lid on a miserable season for the Cidermen. The celebrations when Yorkshire clinched victory were a far cry from their uncertain start. Craig White, after taking seven from Andrew Caddick’s first over, was undone by Richard Johnson, who found his outside edge for Rob Turner to take a sprawling catch behind the stumps. Chris Silverwood replaced him, only to see his third ball from Johnson send his off-stump cartwheeling. Johnson had taken two for five in two overs and Yorkshire were wondering.Elliott settled his team’s nerves with cover-driven boundaries at either end, and the 50 came up off 66 balls. He lost Matthew Wood, again bowled by Johnson but this time off the inside edge, for 19. The wicket justified Jamie Cox’s decision to keep Johnson on into his seventh over. A double change introduced Keith Parsons and Steffan Jones, and Elliott took another boundary off the former with an impeccable straight drive.Michael Vaughan had reached 31 without scoring a boundary when he failed to survive the second of two successive lbw appeals in Jones’ second spell. Without approaching his sublime Test form of earlier this summer, Vaughan had featured in a 94-run partnership of critical importance to his side. McGrath, after surviving another desperately close lbw call, tucked into the mainly economical Ian Blackwell with a delicious cover boundary. The first ball of Caddick’s return was smacked through mid-wicket by Elliott, and Somerset’s senior bowler was banished to long leg after conceding 53 runs in nine overs.Elliott swept Dutch for two to reach his hundred, and McGrath revelled in his partner’s success, smiting the same bowler over extra cover and the returning Johnson over mid-wicket. But appropriately it was Elliott who clinched victory, hitting Jones through mid-wicket off the penultimate ball of the 48th over. Elliott’s 128 came at less than a run a ball, and included 16 boundaries.Earlier a half-century from Peter Bowler was the primary contribution to Somerset’s 256 for eight, while Keith Parsons contributed to the latter stages of the innings. Marcus Trescothick quickly brought the crowd to life in his major innings since breaking a thumb in the quarter-final against Worcestershire at Taunton. After being caught off a no ball in the sixth over (Hoggard’s third), he took 14 off the next three deliveries, with an off-driven six into the pavilion and two crunching fours to raise the voices and hopes of the Somerset faithful. But they were reduced to near silence in Hoggard’s next over by an electric piece of fielding. As Trescothick again drove fiercely, Michael Vaughan launched himself to his right in the covers to pull off a spectacular one-handed catch.Trescothick, who had looked well set, made 27 and walked off at 41 for one, with the rate up at around six an over. Hoggard, who went for 34 off his first four overs, looked a relieved man and made way for Ryan Sidebottom in the tenth. At the nursery end Silverwood, who had a pain-killing injection for an ankle injury before the match, bowled his first eight overs off the reel for 30. Joined by Jamie Cox, Bowler continued to punish anything loose, and as the fielding restrictions ended Somerset had reached 82 for one. Cox, who had looked in good touch, was the second wicket to fall when he was given out lbw to an in-swinging delivery from McGrath.Having hit five fours from the 68 balls he faced, Bowler’s valuable innings came to an end when he fashioned a somewhat flat-footed drive against the first ball of Hoggard’s second spell and edged behind to Richard Blakey. He was out for 67 and with him went much of Somerset’s momentum. Hoggard struck again to dismiss the dangerous Michael Burns for 21, and Sidebottom bowled new international selection Ian Blackwell for 12 as the innings stalled.Turner joined the ever-reliable Parsons and helped add 39 for the sixth wicket. At one time, it appeared that Somerset had been on course for a total close to 300, but 250 became a more realistic target when Turner chipped Sidebottom’s slower ball to Craig White at short mid-wicket. Johnson was bowled playing a horrible smear at Hoggard, while Parsons survived until the final over, falling to a well-judged catch by Sidebottom at long-on to give Hoggard a five-wicket return that flattered him.It was left to Keith Dutch to garner all available runs in the last over, which he did with customary panache. The power with which he crashed Hoggard through the covers for four off the back foot was worthy of note. That was one of only eight boundaries in the last 20 overs as the Yorkshire attack came back well. In the end the suspicion that Somerset’s total was some 15 to 20 runs below par on a good batting pitch proved to be well-founded.

Everton transfer update on Matheus Nunes

Everton are ‘practically certain’ to sign Matheus Nunes in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Midfielders needed

With recent rumours emerging that both Allan and James Rodriguez could be on their way to Real Madrid to join up with former Toffees manager Carlo Ancelotti, the Goodison Park club may be in desperate need of strengthening in the centre of midfield.

Even if both Allan and Rodriguez stay put, the Merseysiders would not say no to added squad depth ahead of the 2021/22 season.

The Latest: Nunes likely

As per Record (via Sport Witness), the Toffees are ‘practically certain’ to sign Nunes, with general terms of agreement being made between Everton and Sporting Lisbon.

However, the Portuguese champions are reportedly taking things calmly, and there is ‘no haste’ with regards to getting a potential deal done.

The Verdict: Sign Nunes

Playing in 31 Liga NOS games last season, scoring three goals and providing two assists (Transfermarkt), Nunes was a key figure in Sporting’s recent title triumph, and his winning mentality would surely be a great asset for Everton to have both in the dressing room as well as on the pitch.

The midfielder also won 3.9 of his duels per game and averaged 1.2 successful dribbles and one key pass per match in 2020/21 (Sofascore).

At just 22 years of age as well, the Brazilian certainly has a lot of potential; and at a height of 1.83m (6 foot), he should have little problems in coping with both the physical and aerial demands of the Premier League.

While a potential deal looks close to being completed, Everton should be looking to wrap it up as soon as possible so that Nunes can be best prepared for pre-season.

In other news, find out what managerial update has left these Everton fans buzzing!
