beIN reveal on Newcastle takeover

Simon Zekaria has dropped a controversial reveal involving beIN Sports and the potential takeover of Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: CAT revelations

The Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) hearing between the Tyneside club and the Premier League over the stalled takeover deal with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group finally got underway on Wednesday morning.

As cited by The Daily Telegraph, the St James’ Park club were quite astonishingly threatened with expulsion from the top flight, and their separate arbitration case against the division will now take place on 3 January 2022.

The Latest: Zekaria on beIN

Journalist Zekaria has now revealed that St James Holdings Ltd (SJHL), the company owned by Mike Ashley who bought the CAT claim, have alleged that beIN Sports pressurised the Premier League to block the proposed takeover on Tyneside while discussing a three-year broadcasting rights deal to 2025.

He said: “I have learnt that SJHL’s competition claim alleges that beIN Sports pressurised the PL to block the sale of @NUFC while negotiating a three-year broadcasting rights deal to 2025.”

The Verdict: Controversial

Given that the KSA’s issue with piracy and the illegal streaming of games in the Premier League was reportedly suggested to be key in the delay of the takeover, it is not a surprise to hear that Qatari broadcaster beIN allegedly pressurised the top flight to block the sale.

However, it does not make it any less controversial, as decisions on the takeover should not be influenced by outside parties.

It will no doubt be interesting to see what the arbitration proceedings bring in terms of the direction of where the takeover bid is now heading.

Sri Lanka jolted on rain-hit day

The bowlers had their say on a rain-hit second day at the Premadasa Stadium as Pakistan took control again by reducing the Sri Lankans to 155 for 6

Scorecard
The bowlers had their say on a rain-hit second day at the Premadasa Stadium as Pakistan A regained control by reducing Sri Lanka A to 155 for 6. The Sri Lankans were on top early on when they inflicted a collapse to bowl out Pakistan for 342, but their batsmen lost the plot after a sound start.Pakistan failed to consolidate their strong overnight position of 293 for 4 when they lost their well-set pair of Faisal Iqbal and Fahad Iqbal in quick succession. Chaminda Vidanapathirana, the right-arm seamer, was the pick of the bowlers as he sent back Faisal, Sarfraz Ahmed and Fahad Masood. Like Ahmed Shehzad a day earlier, the captain Faisal too was unlucky to miss out on a century. Vidanapathirana finished with 3 for 43 in 20 overs. The home side were on the upswing when their openers began strongly with a stand of 79. Abdur Rehman broke the stand when he sent back Malinda Warnapura caught and bowled for 37, before Mohammad Talha sent back the other opener, Lahiru Thirimanne, shortly after reaching his half-century. An incisive spell by Wahab Riaz helped Pakistan claw back as the home side lost three wickets for as many runs. There was no recovery to speak of before rain brought an early end to the proceedings.

Newcastle lining up Gareth Bale swoop

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle’s interest in Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale.

What’s the talk?

According to Spanish outlet Sport, the Magpies are eyeing the Welsh international as one of a number of signings they are planning for the summer of 2022, with Keylor Navas, Mauro Icardi and Dele Alli also mentioned.

The report claimed that Real Madrid have no intention of offering the 32-year-old a contract extension, which means that Bale will be a free agent at the end of the season.

Get it done

PIF must seal a deal for Bale in January on a pre-contract agreement as he could be a terrific signing for Newcastle and he would not cost a penny in transfer fees. Taking his wages out of the equation for a moment, he would be a bargain addition for the Magpies and give the squad a huge boost both in terms of his profile and ability on the pitch.

Bale has enjoyed an enviable career with Real Madrid, winning four Champions League titles with the Spanish giants. He has scored 106 goals and provided 68 assists in 254 games for the club, including three goals in Champions League finals – a tally only Cristiano Ronaldo has bettered in the history of the competition.

Former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane hailed the £16.2m-rated forward as “spectacular” before the winger signed on loan for Tottenham last year. He said: “For now, Bale is one of our players. The matter still has to be finalised. We’re not going to talk about things that don’t make sense. Bale has been spectacular.”

You may read these statistics and achievements and wonder what he offers in the present day. Well, his form for Tottenham on loan in the 2020/21 campaign shows that he still has the Midas touch in front of goal as he plundered 14 goals and three assists in 17 starts across the Premier League and Europa League. 54 Premier League goals in total is also a mightily eye-catching statistic for supporters to enjoy.

He averaged an excellent WhoScored rating of 7.30 for Spurs in the top flight last term, creating 1.1 chances per game to go along with his 11 goals. This shows that he would bring quality to the Newcastle squad, whilst his profile and reputation as a player could give the club’s image a boost and improve the mood amongst the squad as they see such a high-profile signing come through the door.

PIF must now ensure that they can convince him to make the switch at the end of the season, assuming that Real Madrid do not change their mind on his contract situation. It could be a terrific swoop by the Magpies and leave the Toon Army feeling excited ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

Wolves interested in Guilherme Arana

Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in a deal to bring Guilherme Arana to Molineux this January.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Spanish media outlet Fichajes (via Birmingham Live), who claim that Bruno Lage has identified the Atletico Mineiro left-back as a transfer target ahead of the winter window, with Wolves believed to have been monitoring the 24-year-old following his highly impressive performances at the Toyko Olympics this summer.

Likened to Sylvinho

While, on the face of it, left-back does not appear to be a position in which Lage is in desperate need of reinforcements this January, upon digging a little deeper, the signing of a new player in the position this winter, particularly one of Arana’s quality, may actually prove to be a very intelligent move by Jeff Shi.

Indeed, with Jonny Otto sidelined until at least 2022 due to injury, Wolves’ current first-choice left-back Marcal celebrating his 33rd birthday later this season and £9.99m summer signing Rayan Ait Nouri having played just six minutes of Premier League football under Lage, it would appear that the possibility of the latter two of this trio being moved on next summer a very real one.

If this is the plan for Wolves, signing a new player in the position in January would be a smart move indeed, allowing the potential signing to bed into the club and learn from those ahead of him in the current pecking order before potentially taking on the position as first-choice next season.

And, considering just how impressive Arana has been for Atletico Mineiro in the current campaign, the 24-year-old would certainly appear to make a fantastic addition to the Wolves squad.

Indeed, over his 16 Brazilian Serie A appearances this term, the £7.2m-rated man has helped his side keep seven clean sheets, registered four assists and created three big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.4 shots and making 1.5 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the player Andre Jardine dubbed a “spectacular” talent average a SofaScore match rating of 7.14, ranking him as his club’s fourth-best performer in the Brazilian top flight.

As such, should an opportunity to sign the man who Breaking The Lines compared to former Arsenal and Barcelona left-back Sylvinho this January, Shi simply must do all he can to land the defender.

David Hussey stars in thumping win

Australia’s big-name bowling attack shut down Scotland for a 189-run win after David Hussey provided the initial warmth with his first ODI century on a shivery day in Edinburgh

The Bulletin by Peter English in Edinburgh28-Aug-2009
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Richie Berrington fought hard for his 25, but Australia’s strong attack was too much for Scotland•SNSAustralia’s big-name bowling attack shut down Scotland for a 189-run win after David Hussey provided the initial warmth with his first ODI century on a shivery day in Edinburgh. Hussey’s brisk 111 allowed the tourists to speed to 345, their 12th largest total, and the hosts did well to manage 156 before being dismissed in the 40th over. The sun came out for Scotland’s innings but the Australian fast bowlers took a while to shake off the cold and the captain Gavin Hamilton and Frazer Watts started by putting on 51 in 56 balls. Brett Lee, Mitchell Johnson, Dirk Nannes and Shane Watson were all trialled for an early breakthrough, but the opening pair had few problems until Watts played on to Nannes, giving the left-arm fast man his first wicket on debut.Nannes, who played in the World Twenty20 in June for the Netherlands, was welcomed by Watts with boundaries from his first and sixth deliveries before forcing a straight six in his third over. The opening wicket slowed the hosts’ momentum and Lee and his team-mates chipped in regularly to seal the warm-up success for their limited-overs engagements against England.Lee struck with a slower ball, a full toss which hit the top of Ryan Watson’s stumps on 10, and the home side was 82 for 3 after Qasim Sheikh charged at Nathan Hauritz. His nick was missed by Tim Paine but picked up by the first slip Cameron White following a juggle.Hussey’s strong match continued when he was successful with his second ball, Hamilton being taken by a sharp Watson grab at midwicket for 38. It was a bad mistake for Hamilton, who was desperate to convert his strong start, and he left a disappointed leader.Once the captain went Australia were in control, but they weren’t dominating with the ball on a slowish pitch like they did with the bat. Richie Berrington (25) and Neil McCallum (24) stayed for a while before being overpowered and the tail went quickly. Lee, who knocked out Berrington’s off stump, captured two wickets and snatched a fine diving catch at cover to give Watson his second. Watson led the attack with 3 for 29 to ensure Hussey’s contribution ended in a healthy win.Hussey, who has been left out of the 50-over squads for this trip and the Champions Trophy, is currently seen as a Twenty20 specialist and appeared in this game while his brother Michael rested. He showed Australia what they were missing with a powerful display against modest and overawed opposition. After Australia were in minor discomfort at 143 for 4, Hussey exploded against the offspinner Majid Haq with four sixes in three overs, hitting straight down the ground with assistance from the stiff breeze. The blows were so strong that the only people in danger were the freeloaders watching through the trees outside the ground at the Nursery End.One ball was lost in the foliage and another hit the sightscreen, but Haq continued to flight his deliveries and was punished. Adam Voges joined in with a big clearance and Haq eventually finished with 0 for 75 off 10 overs.Hussey stepped out after the early losses of David Warner (0) and Michael Clarke (16) to join Watson, who was also in a hurry on his way to a 41-ball 68. On a day like this, when only the brave wore t-shirts for the first 50 overs, the batsmen were content to be in the middle – as long as they were doing something to keep warm.Watson, Hussey and Voges got the spectators’ hands out of their pockets to clap – and field – with bursts of impressive strokeplay against willing but out-classed bowlers. Hussey’s century came from 83 balls and there was a brief acknowledgement before he attempted more sixes. He landed another before finding McCallum at long off, launching one high into the wind off Berrington. The innings, which lasted 87 deliveries, would have been more timely if it had arrived in ODIs against South Africa, New Zealand or Pakistan over the past eight months. Hussey’s failure to make regular contributions in those series was the reason for his dropping and it’s unlikely a big score against a team like this will help him too much. What it has done is put him in form before the two Twenty20s against England starting in Manchester on Sunday.Voges did the same, blasting three sixes in his 72, and Watson continued his strong tour since being promoted to the Test team in Birmingham. Paine, the debutant wicketkeeper, joined the fun with a calm 29 not out in the frenetic finish that was dominated by Gordon Goudie, the opening bowler.Goudie ended the innings with four late breakthroughs to take 5 for 73 from 10 overs – only the second five-wicket haul by a Scotland player – and give the strong crowd someone local to cheer. He collected two wickets in the 48th over and removed Nathan Hauritz and Dirk Nannes to conclude Australia’s heavy scoring. Scotland kept in touch for a while in reply and hung in against the world’s No. 3 team.

Predicted Spurs XI vs Man Utd - team news

Nuno Santo and his Tottenham side welcome Manchester United to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for an enticing encounter in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Last weekend, the Lilywhites were defeated by local rivals West Ham United but bounced back with a victory at Burnley in the Carabao Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, visiting boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is under increasing pressure to deliver over the next few games, starting today, after the Red Devils slipped outside the top six.

We’re in for quite the game in north London but what sort of line-up could we see from Nuno? Here’s what we are predicting…

There could be as many as six changes from the side which won at Turf Moor only a few days ago.

It was a mixed starting XI from Nuno, so some first-team stalwarts will remain, but there will be a change between the sticks as club captain Hugo Lloris returns to the side in place of cup goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini.

Both Cristian Romero and Emerson Royal also keep their places, but this time they are joined by Eric Dier, who has started all nine league games so far this term, and Sergio Reguilon. They replace Ben Davies and Davinson Sanchez, a big call despite the latter’s impressive showing in midweek.

In midfield, the duo of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp should remain, but this time it’ll be Tanguy Ndombele in the no.10 role, rather than Giovani Lo Celso, who is axed in favour of the French dynamo.

Out wide, Heung-min Son should be fresh for a start alongside Wednesday’s match-winner Lucas Moura, with Harry Kane the final man to keep his place up top. It means that Steven Bergwijn is axed after a poor performance in midweek, whilst Bryan Gil seems likely to miss out through injury.

AND in other news, 13 clearances, 85 touches: £18m-rated Spurs beast has just handed Nuno one big dilemma…

McCullum rues missed catch and captain

Brendon McCullum was left to rue the loss of the man he stood in for asAustralia successfully – and ultimately, comfortably – defended theirChampions Trophy title at Centurion with a six-wicket win

Osman Samiuddin at Centurion06-Oct-2009Brendon McCullum was left to rue the loss of the man he stood in for asAustralia successfully – and ultimately, comfortably – defended theirChampions Trophy title at Centurion with a six-wicket win. New Zealand’sexcellent run to the final of the eight-nation tournament had come despitethe loss, at various stages of the event, of three key players to injury. The biggest loss, however, came in the final when Daniel Vettori had towithdraw with a hamstring injury. McCullum took over as captain and had anevening to forget, getting out for a duck and spilling a vital catch offCameron White just as his side was making a remarkable fight of it.Vettori was man of the match in the semi-final win over Pakistan, withthree wickets and a critical 41, the peak of a tournament in which he hadbeen an increasing influence as captain and player.New Zealand never recovered from the loss, a key moment in the matchbefore it had even begun. “I think losing Dan was a huge blow,”McCullum said. “He’s been instrumental for us with bat, ball and also with hiscaptaincy.”He’s a huge player for us who we look to not only forperformance but also for inspiration so to lose him was obviouslydisappointing. I still thought we had the calibre of players and also a good self-beliefin the unit that we’d be able to put Australia under pressure andhopefully come out with the result but it wasn’t to be.”Despite setting a target of only 201, New Zealand’s opening bowlers ShaneBond and Kyle Mills took two early wickets to put Australia under seriouspressure at 6 for 2. Shane Watson and Cameron White struggled throughtheir first spells, and were fortunate to survive. For that phase, hopes of anunlikely defence remained.”I thought they were brilliant to take out the first couple of wickets in the fashion that they did – it was a fantastic effort,” McCullum said of the pair. “They kept coming in and trying to give it their all but unfortunately we didn’t provide them with enough runs. After those two wickets we believed we could win and we were pretty pumped.”But McCullum’s drop may now rival that of Younis Khan’s in the semi-final, even if it was a much more difficult chance, in terms of how much it eventually cost. And McCullum said he was never in the right position to claim the catch. “It was obviously a crucial one. Unfortunately one wentdown today and I was responsible for it. I didn’t ever get set underneath it and in the end I was lucky to even get a hand on it.”Eventually, however, the disappointment will be replaced by considerable pride at having gone so far in this tournament, despite losing several key players. New Zealand lost their first match to South Africa and had since gone on a fascinating run, winning all their games, but each time losing another player to injury. The experience, McCullum believes, has brought them closer together as a unit and is something that they can take considerable positives from.”We’re proud of what we’ve achieved in terms of arriving at the final andgiving ourselves a chance to walk away with the silverware,” he said. “Weare disappointed with what happened today but are proud of the desire andthe passion through some tough times and I think if we can continue tocapture that then this team will certainly move forward. We’ve certainlycome together as a group over this last couple of weeks.”

Hauritz downplays 6-1 win

England dumped Sri Lanka and South Africa to most peoples’ surprise, and Hauritz was insistent that the 6-1 hammering would have no impact whatsoever on how they performed in Friday’s semi-final

Dileep Premachandran in Centurion01-Oct-2009Much of the talk in recent months has been of whether it would be India or South Africa that replaced Australia at the top of the ICC’s one-day rankings. But come the big tournament, both the so-called pretenders to the throne have slunk away with nary a whimper, while Australia have taken their obligatory place in the final four. The next obstacle in their path to retaining the trophy they won in 2006 are England, a side they pummelled 6-1 not so long ago. After reaching a strong position against India in an abandoned fixture and being tested by a superb last-ditch Pakistani effort with the ball, Australia can now look ahead to a third successive game at Supersport Park. Nathan Hauritz, who scampered the winning bye off the last ball against Pakistan, admitted to a feeling of relief, though tying the scores had already guaranteed the team a place in the semi-final ahead of India.”It didn’t really matter what happened on the last ball,” he said. “We found out later that if we’d tied, we’d have played New Zealand. But at the end of the day, you want to win every game. It doesn’t bother me really who we play. We’ve been playing some good cricket lately. We’ve played England recently and it’s good to play them, I guess, because we sort of know their games, and they know ours. But it’s a new game and a new venue, so it doesn’t really matter.”England dumped Sri Lanka and South Africa to most peoples’ surprise, and Hauritz was insistent that the 6-1 hammering would have no impact whatsoever on how they performed in Friday’s semi-final. “Anything can happen in a 50-over competition,” he said. “We’ve seen India knocked out. India and South Africa are the best two sides in the world at the moment. All that matters is how the team comes out to play. The difference was that we played seven games back-to-back against each other, and it can get a bit monotonous and draining at times. Obviously, it was a fresh start for England over here and they’ve done really well so far.”Familiarity will play its part though. “We know everybody’s strengths and weaknesses, whereas when we played India, we hadn’t played them in 18 months in one-day cricket,” he said. “As Swanny [Graeme Swann] said in a press conference, they’ve got the momentum. They won the last game [smiles].”After India’s exit, MS Dhoni reckoned that one of Australia’s greatest strengths was the presence of bowlers who were more than handy with the bat. Hauritz agreed, while adding that England possessed similar depth as well. “They’ve got Broad and Swann and those sort of guys,” he said. “I think in this day and age, when you play Twenty20 or one-day cricket, you need to have three strings to your bow. Gone are the days when you were just a bowler. We have Peter Siddle at No.11, and he bats fine as well. I don’t think there’s too much difference between the two sides.”Much has been made of England’s new-found aggression in the highveld, but according to Hauritz, there would be little change in Australia’s approach to the game. “In this format, you have nothing to lose,” he said. “Paul Collingwood’s now batting No. 4 for them and he’s done a fantastic job. At the start of the series against us, Owais Shah played his shots, but by the end of it, he was a different batsman. We saw over here how punishing he can be. It’s a new game tomorrow.”Having tried a variety of options over the past 12 months, Hauritz now appears to be at the front of Australia’s spin pecking order, a remarkable reversal of fortunes for someone who was struggling to get a game for New South Wales. “It’s fantastic to be picked,” he said. “I had a long time when I wasn’t even picked for state cricket and stuff like that. To be constantly picked and to do my job when asked is always rewarding. Whether you’re ever Australia’s No. 1 spinner is a question, because we’ve seen there’s still a lot of emphasis on quick bowling. It’s definitely rewarding to be picked on some of the non-turning wickets in one-day cricket around the world.”Swann’s pronouncements and talk of a spin rivalry also got little response from Hauritz. “I get along pretty well with Swanny,” he said. “He’s pretty out there with the way he speaks, but he just tries to create good humour. At the end of that series, everyone was just ready to move on. Myself and Graeme have been pretty close in the way we’ve bowled. In the one-day series, they played [Adil] Rashid a bit to give Swanny a break. That dulled it down a bit. In the one-day series, it was our batting that was the key. I don’t think there will be too much talk about spin tomorrow. “While others complain of burnout, Hauritz is relishing his second chance. Over the past 12 months, he’s taken 28 wickets in 22 games, while conceding just 4.27 an over. “It’s different for me as I’ve been out of the game for so long,” he said. “But for the other guys, it is pretty tiring on the body. Especially this tournament with four back-to-back matches on the trot with one day’s rest. At the end of the day, you’re playing for your country. There are going to be days when you’re sore. But once you step on to the line, it’s different. It’s busy, but I’d much rather be doing this than something else.”Australia’s standards have slipped in recent times, with 12 defeats [and 17 wins] in the last year. But going in to the final weekend of a major tournament, who would bet against them? Whether it’s a bye run by the spinner who came in from the cold, or a half-century from a promising wicketkeeper-batsman, Australia invariably find a way. Their closest competitors, by contrast, find dead-ends.

Di Marzio drops Tottenham manager claim

Antonio Conte could be in line to take over from Nuno Espirito Santo as Tottenham Hotspur’s new manager.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, who suggested in a post on Twitter that it is only a matter of time until the former Juventus, Chelsea and Inter Milan manager is appointed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following Nuno’s sacking on Monday morning.

In his tweet, Di Marzio said: “Antonio Conte @SpursOfficial” – accompanied by an hourglass emoji.

Fans surely buzzing

Following Spurs’ 3-0 home defeat to Manchester United on Saturday – a result which left Tottenham fans furious on social media, as well as the team in eighth place in the Premier League standings – it very much appeared to be a matter of when rather than if Nuno would be relieved of his duties as the club’s manager.

And, after reports on Sunday had claimed that Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici were meeting to discuss the future of the 47-year-old boss, it was confirmed on Monday that the former Wolverhampton Wanderers manager would be leaving the North London side with immediate effect.

Rumours regarding Antonio Conte’s subsequent appointment began almost immediately, with Di Marzio being one of the first to suggest that a deal for the Italian could be nearing completion, as well as offering a further update on his initial three-word tweet, stating: “Antonio Conte is expected to be in London today for final details and will sign a contract until 2023 with @SpursOfficial.”

And, should Levy manage to finally convince Conte of a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after failing this summer, it would appear to be a genuinely positive appointment by the Spurs chairman – after the disappointment of both the Jose Mourinho and Nuno eras.

Indeed, Conte is a serial winner, having lifted three consecutive Serie A titles with Juventus, the Premier League in his first season at Chelsea, and once again lifting the Scudetto with Inter Milan last term.

As such, with Spurs having been in something of a freefall decline since the departure of Mauricio Pochettino back in 2019, if there is one man who has proven he knows what it takes to return a side to the top, it is Conte. His return to London would undoubtedly leave fans of the Lilywhites buzzing.

Fired Kerala coach serves legal notice on state body

Sacked Kerala coach, Vedam Hariharan, has slapped the state’s association with a legal notice claiming Rs 50 lakh in damages for non-payment of salary and unfair dismissal

Cricinfo staff03-Nov-2009Vedam Hariharan, the former Kerala coach, has slapped the state’s association with a legal notice claiming Rs 50 lakh in damages for non-payment of salary and unfair dismissal. Hariharan, a former Ranji fast bowler, was fired by the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) one year into his three-year deal.”I signed a three-year contract with KCA in 2008-09 ending with the 2010-2011 season,” Hariharan said. “Once the KCA chose not to honour this contract, I was left with no option but to issue a legal notice to KCA secretary TC Mathew for non-payment of salary and unfair dismissal.”Mathew, himself a lawyer, said the association was not too concerned about the legal notice and that there was no formal written contract between the KCA and Hariharan. “It was just a mutual exchange of letters, not even on a stamp paper,” he told . “Basically we didn’t want his services anymore.”Hariharan was originally appointed for the 2007-08 season, in which he guided Kerala to the semi-finals of the Ranji Trophy Plate league. Kerala finished fourth in the group the following season, with two wins and two losses. Kerala kick off this year’s Ranji campaign against Andhra at Kannur on Tuesday.”I was in constant touch with KCA through e-mails but did not receive any information about the future of my contract,” Hariharan said. “After getting back to India [from Glasgow, where he was on a coaching assignment] in September, I spoke to the KCA secretary, who told me that a new coach had been appointed according to a decision taken by the cricket committee. There has been no formal communication to this effect whatsoever to date.”Hariharan has played 42 first-class matches, taking 114 wickets at an average of 32.06, in a 17-year career ending in 1989-90.
