Jota, a key player for the Reds this season with four goals and two assists in 10 appearances, suffered an injury in last weekend’s match against Chelsea, forcing him to leave the pitch early. The injury kept him sidelined for their midweek Champions League encounter with RB Leipzig and now the Portuguese will also miss the trip to north London.

In addition to Jota’s unavailability, Slot also revealed that Federico Chiesa also remains unavailable but might resume training on Friday.

"I think they feel good but not when it comes to playing for us during the weekend," he told reporters. "Federico might train with us today or tomorrow – but Diogo definitely not. And Conor Bradley, let's see if he can be with us tomorrow."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper, Alisson Becker, remains sidelined with a hamstring injury he sustained against Crystal Palace. As a result, backup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has stepped in to fill Alisson’s role, and Slot confirmed that Kelleher will continue to be Liverpool’s starting goalkeeper against the Gunners.

On Alisson’s condition, Slot remarked: "Progressing well like we expect, not a short-term recovery, so difficult to judge. We judge him at the end phase of his rehab but not yet. Don't expect him to be at Brighton in the cup."

ÂŁ155,000-per-week Chelsea ace may be used in swap deal for Real Madrid man

The possibility of one high-earning Chelsea ace being used in a swap deal for a Real Madrid player has been mooted this week, as Todd Boehly and the recruitment team look to both trim Enzo Maresca's squad and upgrade his options simultaneously.

Chelsea undergo busy summer as they seal signings and departures

The confirmed signings of Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Brazilian starlet Estevao Willian bring Chelsea's total expenditure of the window to around £81 million so far, and the soon-to-be signing of Renato Veiga from FC Basel will take that up to £93 million.

The Blues could snap up a cheap deal.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 10, 2024

Boehly, assisted by his co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, have operated cleverly to ensure Chelsea are not flying too close to the wind in regard to PSR by agreeing a host of outgoing transfers.

Ian Maatsen, Omari Hutchinson, Lewis Hall, Michael Golding, Thiago Silva and Hakim Ziyech have all departed Stamford Bridge to the tune of around £89 million – meaning Chelsea have registered a net spend of just £4 million so far.

The aforementioned bunch are now also trimmed off the wage bill, saving Chelsea more cash, but a few more expected to follow them out the door. Armando Broja, Malang Sarr, Romelu Lukaku, Trevoh Chalobah, Lesley Ugochukwu, Carney Chukwuemeka, Ben Chilwell, Mykhailo Mudryk and Conor Gallagher are other players who could be sold by Chelsea, according to various reports from the last few months.

Chelsea are under pressure to sell Gallagher with his contract expiring in under 12 months, while the likes of Lukaku don't appear to have a future under Maresca. Another high-earning player who could leave with the Belgian is goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who is believed to be on around £155,000 per week.

The 29-year-old, who spent last season on loan at the Bernabeu, is also attracting interest from Saudi Arabia and could reunite with N'Golo Kante at Al-Ittihad (Rudy Galetti).

Arrizabalaga is also rumoured to be very keen on quitting Chelsea this summer, and a move back to Real Madrid may well be on the cards for him.

Mathews, Chandimal boost for struggling Sri Lanka

Mathews will play as specialist batsman; Chandimal set to return after missing second Test in South Africa

Andrew Fidel Fernando13-Jan-2021Batsman Angelo Mathews and fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep are among five players who have joined the Sri Lanka bio-bubble since their return from South Africa. They, along with batsman Roshen Silva, spin-bowling allrounder Ramesh Mendis, and left-arm wristspinner Lakshan Sandakan have now officially been named in the squad to play England, in the Test series that starts Wednesday. The squad announcement was delayed until it was ratified by the country’s sports minister.Dhananjaya de Silva, who tore a ligament in his thigh on Boxing Day, and Kasun Rajitha, who injured his groin the next morning, are both out of the series altogether. But Mathews’ return in particular will hearten a Sri Lanka side that had been struck down by injury in South Africa. He is likely to take up a middle-order position, with Dinesh Chandimal also set to slot back in after missing the last Test.Sri Lanka’s team manager Asantha de Mel said that Oshada Fernando was not a certainty to play in the first Test in Galle, however, because although he has recovered from the injury that kept him out of contention for the South Africa series, he has not had substantial practice yet.Suranga Lakmal and Lahiru Kumara have also recovered from the various strains that had plagued them in South Africa, but according to de Mel, both may be short of conditioning. Like Oshada, they are technically available, but are not certain to be in the XI.On the spin-bowling front, Sri Lanka have legspinner Wanindu Hasaranga, left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya, offspinner Dilruwan Perera, and Sandakan to choose from. He’s better than Isak: Chelsea battling PL rivals to sign ÂŁ86m "powerhouse"

Victor Osimhen, Jonathan David and Julian Alvarez are just three names that have been linked with a move to Chelsea during the ongoing transfer window.

From these respective links, it’s evident that new boss Enzo Maresca wants a world-class centre-forward to give himself the best possible chance of returning to the Premier League’s top four.

However, the Blues didn’t look short of goals in England’s top four last season, scoring 77 goals – the fifth-highest tally of any side in the division.

Nicolas Jackson

Cole Palmer topped the goalscoring charts with 22 goals in his first season at Stamford Bridge, with Nicolas Jackson achieving a total of 14 in his first campaign in English football.

Despite the duo’s respective tallies, the Blues are still eyeing a new talisman, with the club set to rival another Premier League side for a very talented goalscorer.

Chelsea interested in £86m forward this summer

According to Football Transfers, Chelsea are set to rival Arsenal for the signature of Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer.

The 26-year-old Swedish international registered a staggering 29 goals and ten assists in his 33 matches in Liga Portugal last season – making him the division’s top scorer by eight goals.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

Football Transfers' report states that the two Premier League sides are the only options for Gyokeres this window after Italian outfit Napoli pulled out of the race for his services.

Antonio Conte’s side have undoubtedly been priced out of a move for the former Coventry City man, after Sporting set a £86m price tag to prise him away from the Portuguese club ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Chelsea’s interest in the striker could spell the end of their desire to sign another forward, with Gyokeres undoubtedly a better option for Maresca next season.

Why Gyokeres would be a better option than Isak for Chelsea

In recent weeks, rumours have been circulating over a potential move for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, with Eddie Howe’s side wanting a fee of over £100m for his star man this summer.

The fee touted is hardly a surprise, given his goalscoring tally from last season, which saw the 24-year-old score 21 times in his 27 Premier League appearances.

His tally would undoubtedly provide the added goalscoring threat Maresca is looking for, but the club would be better off opting for a move for Sporting striker Gyokeres instead.

He managed to finish the previous campaign with 16 more goal contributions than the Newcastle ace, whilst also averaging more combined goals and assists per 90.

With the Blues wanting an out-and-out centre-forward, Gyokeres, who's been dubbed a "powerhouse" by analyst Ben Mattinson, would prove to be a better addition, winning over double the amount of aerials compared to Isak – giving Maresca the focal point that he’s craving at Stamford Bridge.

This season is a pivotal one for Chelsea as they aim to close the gap created by numerous sides above them in recent campaigns, having missed out on Champions League qualification yet again in 2023/24.

With the club already splashing out over £100m on two players under Todd Boehly’s watchful eye – in the form of Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez – it’s crucial that should they spend a similar figure this summer that they identify the right talent, with Gyokeres undoubtedly more of a better fit for the Blues.

Bayern already looking beyond KaneEnglish striker has contract until 2027Concerned with stalling development of TelFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Kane’s arrival at Bayern was heralded as a transformative signing, filling the centre-forward role with an elite scorer capable of delivering at the highest level. Bayern officials are pleased with the 30-year-old’s impact, as he has brought both goal-scoring prowess and leadership to the team. However, according to Bayern’s management, led by sports director Max Eberl, is already analysing potential future options in the striker market, considering both the club’s immediate and extended needs.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

One of the factors influencing Bayern’s search is the stalling development of young forward Mathys Tel, the 19-year-old signed from Rennes in 2022. Despite high hopes surrounding his talent, Tel has struggled to break into Bayern's starting lineup, with limited opportunities and performance issues hindering his progress under manager Vincent Kompany. In Bayern’s recent 4-0 cup victory over Mainz, Tel was given 45 minutes to showcase his skills but was largely unable to make an impact, looking disheartened on the pitch.

Tel faces tough competition for a place among Bayern’s attacking options, as the club boasts a formidable lineup with players like Serge Gnabry, Michael Olise, Kingsley Coman, and Leroy Sane – all vying for limited positions. Meanwhile, Kane’s presence in the central striker role has further narrowed Tel’s opportunities to contribute regularly.

DID YOU KNOW?

With Tel’s development stalling, a loan deal in the upcoming winter transfer window is reportedly being considered to provide him with the game time he needs to flourish. Bundesliga side Stuttgart has already expressed interest in securing Tel on a temporary basis, having attempted to sign the young forward last summer. A loan move could offer Tel the chance to play regularly, rebuild his confidence, and showcase his potential in a more prominent role, akin to how Bayern’s other young talents like Paul Wanner (on loan at FC Heidenheim) and Bryan Zaragoza (on loan at Osasuna) are progressing.

As Bayern eye options for a post-Kane era and prepare to refine their forward lineup, the club’s comprehensive approach to planning ensures they remain competitive. It remains to be seen whether Kane will continue to excel in the coming years or if a new heir emerges.

Ishant Sharma ahead of 100th Test: Winning WTC will be the same feeling as winning the World Cup

Fast bowler says he would have got to 100 even if was playing all formats – but maybe not this quickly

Sidharth Monga22-Feb-20213:44

Ishant Sharma – There’s a lot of time to surpass Kapil Dev’s 131 career Tests

It is easy to forget that Ishant Sharma, who will play his 100th Test this Wednesday, is only 32 years old. He has seen a lot of ups and downs at such a young age. Most importantly, he has kept working on his skill and fitness to turn around a career that at one point looked like one of the luckier ones. From there to leading India’s attack to being one of the best Test bowlers in the world over the last four years is a testament to his commitment and stubbornness.Test cricket is Ishant’s world now, and the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) is his World Cup. When asked if he can see himself going past Kapil Dev’s mark of 131 Tests – the most for an India fast bowler – Ishant said he wasn’t looking beyond qualifying for the WTC final.Related

Umesh Yadav added to Test squad, Shardul Thakur released

Ishant Sharma – from unlucky workhorse to master quick

“There’s a lot of time to 131,” Ishant said. “Right now I am only thinking about how we can win the next Test. And then the next so that we can qualify for the final of World Test Championship. I have only [one] format [to play in], so the WTC is like a World Cup for me. If we reach the final and then go on to win it, it will be the same feeling as winning the ICC World Cup.”Ever since Ishant has stopped playing other formats for India though, he has been able to spend more time on his Test skills. One of the well-known improvements came about under Jason Gillespie at Sussex, where he learnt to bowl fuller without sacrificing on the pace, without floating the ball up there. Ishant acknowledged that missing other formats might have helped him, but he would have got to 100 Tests anyway.”Obviously I want to play white-ball cricket,” Ishant said. “A sportsman’s only job is to play. What will he do if he doesn’t play? But I don’t think too much about the formats I miss. I only think about the format I am playing. How can I perform better in the format I am playing? How can I make my team win? If you think positively about a situation, it is easier to stay grateful and perform for the team.”Maybe not playing three formats has helped me play 100 but I don’t think I wouldn’t have got there if I was playing other formats. I am only 32 after all, and not 42. Maybe I wouldn’t have got there this early, but I am sure the amount of time I have played and the way I stay fit and look after my conditioning, I would have played 100.”

“The sooner you forget things and move on in life, the better it is for you. This is the biggest lesson I have learned. If you are stuck on the past, you can’t move ahead.”ISHANT SHARMA

Over the years, Ishant has also understood his body better and has learnt to train smarter. “Thirty-eight is difficult to say as of now,” Ishant said when asked if he felt in his best shape and if he could continue playing as long as England’s James Anderson, another one-format bowler, has. “I just go one Test at a time. I don’t think too far because you never know. You just take it one game at a time. But, yes, I understand my body, what kind of training I need to do. Before also I used to train very hard but didn’t use to think about the recovery. But as you grow older and you have to bowl long spells, then you need to look after yourself. So, I am looking after myself.”You can look after yourself the best possible way but you still can’t control everything. In the winter before this one, Ishant was looking at playing his 100th Test in Australia, but first an injury cut short his tour of New Zealand and then another – combined with Covid-19 restrictions – resulted in his missing the Australia tour altogether.”I’d have loved to go to Australia and complete my 100 Tests there but there are things that are not in your control,” Ishant said. “Because of Covid restrictions, I couldn’t have made it in time. But the sooner you forget things and move on in life, the better it is for you. This is the biggest lesson I have learned. If you are stuck on the past, you can’t move ahead. The next match can also get affected by your past performance. I only keep trying to forget what has happened and focus on what lies ahead.”What lies ahead is also a slow handing of the baton over to Jasprit Bumrah, who Ishant feels, will be the next leader of the attack. “I learnt a lot from Zak [Zaheer Khan],” Ishant said. “Especially his work ethic. He always used to tell me how important fitness is for a fast bowler. That’s what I kept in mind. That’s what I tell everyone in the team: keep working hard on your fitness and I am sure you will play longer.”Jasprit Bumrah has to lead the way for the youngsters after me. The way he grooms the youngsters, the way he talks to them is important. [Navdeep] Saini has pace, [Mohammed] Siraj has control. Everyone’s skill is different. If you ask Saini to bowl in one area, you are not doing justice to his strength. If you ask Siraj to bowl consistently at 140, you are not backing his strength. So, it is important to understand their strengths first.”So, which captain understood Ishant’s strengths the best? Ask not what your captain can do for you, ask what you can do for your captain, Ishant said. “More than the captain understanding me, it is important for me to understand what the captain wants from me,” he said. “If the communication is clear, things get easy for the team. The more time you spend with a captain, the communication gets easier.”

'Winning is everything' – Telemundo's Andres Cantor on Mauricio Pochettino's Argentine mindset, the USMNT and having a front-row seat for the rise of the American game

The legendary broadcaster joins Mic'd Up to discuss fellow Argentine Pochettino, fan diversity and the evolution American soccer

Andres Cantor was there on Nov. 19, 1989, the day that American soccer changed forever. Paul Caligiuri's Shot Heard Round the World hit the back of the net that night in Trinidad & Tobago, and Cantor was one of only a few reporters covering a game that nobody ever anticipated would ever be so impactful.

"We have made great strides," Cantor tells GOAL. "I remember we were only a handful of reporters in Trinidad in 1989 when Caligiuri scored the goal that secured passage to Italy. I think we were no more than, I would say, 10, and I was the only Spanish-speaking journalist, most likely, covering for a Hispanic outlet at the time."

In the 35 years since, Cantor hasn't just had a front-row seat to American soccer's biggest moments, he's witnessed nearly every bit of U.S. soccer history of this modern era. The Argentine-American announcer has covered legends while becoming a legend in his own right, with his famous goal call transcending the sport altogether.

For those who consume the game in Spanish, Cantor's voice has provided the soundtrack to their fandom. He's called World Cups and Olympic games. He's covered American soccer and beyond. His emotional reaction to his beloved Argentina's World Cup triumph in Qatar went viral as the world watched on as one of the game's most beloved figures was in tears for his home country's big moment.

Still, for all the growth in Argentina, it's the rise of American soccer that might just mean the most these days. He's been there from the beginning, and is now preparing for the return of the World Cup to American soil. And he is proud of the role he's played.

"I think we have grown, all of us that have helped in our capacity with the small things that we have done throughout the years to help grow the game," he says. "I think all of us have helped to grow the game. You wouldn't be talking to me if the game was not as popular as it is. GOAL USA wouldn't exist if that wasn't the case. All of us who worked on our side of whatever we do within soccer for so, so many years, are being rewarded, quote, unquote. It gives me a great deal of joy."

The legendary Telemundo commentator discusses the changes in the American game, and Mauricio Pochettino's role in that evolution, in the latest edition of Mic’d Up, a recurring feature in which GOAL US taps into the perspectives of broadcasters, analysts, and pundits on the state of soccer in the U.S. and beyond.

Getty ImagesON POCHETTINO'S HIRING

GOAL: Mauricio Pochettino is now in charge of the USMNT. As a fellow Argentine, what was your reaction when you heard the news?

CANTOR: Iwas born in Argentina, and I know Argentina football very well, so I was very happy when they announced him. But not because of the Argentina association, but because I really think he's a very good coach who has proven himself in the top class in Europe. I think that is the man that the U.S. needed to move forward as we look forward to 2026. It's not a passport question or happiness because of his association; it's just that I really respect Pochettino as a very good coach, and I think that U.S. Soccer found the right man.

AdvertisementGettyON WHAT POCHETTINO BRINGS

GOAL: You mention all of that experience at top levels, but Pochettino also brings a culture shift. What do you expect the culture to be like under him, and what will he have to adapt with the national team?

CANTOR: He's going to have to adjust to this new role as much as the players will in the sense that he is used to working every day on the on-field at the club level, and here he has to train a group of very talented players in and prepare for a match in about three days… For example, they all arrived in between Sunday and Monday. They train fully on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and then they play in Kingston (last week against Jamaica). I think that that has to be very tough and something that he's not used to. So when I say that he has to get used to the fact that he has to relay his message tactically, personality-wise and everything, in about three days. So I think he's a very talented coach who will be able to do that, especially because he's got a great group of professional players.

GOAL: What will he bring mentality-wise? Are there any bits of Argentine culture that he can adapt to this USMNT?

CANTOR: He's going to bring his Argentinian mentality of soccer where winning is everything. He made a Champions League final with Tottenham. He won the league with PSG. He handled very heavy and very complex locker rooms with the names that he had to handle, the personalities, the egos, and he managed them very well, from all what I know! Of course, I wasn't inside, but the impression is that everyone liked him, so he's going to try to bring that into the American mentality, the American soccer player mentality.

We always have a fighting spirit with a great group of athletes, not only just soccer players, but I always said that the U.S. Soccer player is a great athlete on top of the soccer player. I think he's not going to have a tough time in that sense. Now, it's a question of him motivating them for the task at hand. My view is that he's going to need motivation, because you can say – unfortunately, but it's kind of fortunately – the U.S. doesn't have to play World Cup qualifying, so all they have other than the Nations League and Gold Cup are friendly games.

Obviously, it's in the head of each individual player. Even though you're representing your country and you're wearing the crest, I imagine that it is not the same to play a friendly on a Wednesday night against whoever than playing in the Champions League on a Wednesday night. I think he has to really, really focus on that aspect because he needs to get the best out of each player in each camp and every time they get together and play because that's the only chance he's gonna get to prepare the team.

Getty ImagesON COVERING THE USMNT IN SPANISH

GOAL: For your job, obviously Pochettino's arrival is a game-changer because, as someone who works for a Spanish-language company, the USMNT head coach now speaks your language. What changes now that he's here, and what challenges have you had in the past?

CANTOR: You're totally right. There has been no lack of Spanish-speaking players, and even though there were a few, we've never had, throughout the years, any issues in interviewing the English-speaking players. We can always pretty much do live translation, but obviously it's a welcome thing to have the coach of the U.S. national team speaking Spanish. It makes our lives a little bit more easy.

I got to interview Greg Berhalter. I've interviewed Bruce Arena. I've interviewed Jurgen Klinsmann and Bob Bradley, and it's not like 'Oh, they speak English so we can't get access to them.' The U.S. federation, in that sense, was always very friendly towards myself and the companies I worked for. We had no issue, but obviously, the fact that now we have, say Yunus Musah, who is a smart kid who happens to speak Spanish and even Italian. That's great, too!

GOAL: How is this team covered in other countries now? Have you noticed a difference in attention already?

CANTOR: Whenever there is a high-profile coach, he makes news all over the world. We wouldn't be talking about the Turkish league on a weekly basis, but [Jose] Mourinho is doing great PR for both the league and his team, so people are watching. People in the soccer media world tend to be interested in how those high-profile coaches do.

Pochettino was close – and I mean this is just what I've heard other people say – but he could have landed the Manchester United job. He could have landed any other high-profile club or national team job, and he happens to be the U.S. national team coach, so not only are they paying attention now in Argentina and the rest of the Americas, they're paying attention mostly in Europe, too.

Getty Images SportON REACHING SPANISH-SPEAKING FANS

GOAL: Obviously, your job is to speak to Spanish-speaking fans, but that's one extremely large community who all view this sport, and life, differently. However, there is at least now some common ground in that everyone can tune in and hear the USMNT coach speaking Spanish. What does that mean to people?

CANTOR: Obviously, the Mexican dual-national that lives here is going to root for Mexico first. So is the Honduran, the Ecuadorian, the Argentine and whatever, but we have this other national team that we should all care about. The US Federation has their motto, which is One Nation, One Team. We all live here, and obviously we will have our allegiances. With my case, it's Argentina, but it's the U.S. national team.

To all Spanish-speaking dual-nationals or people that live here and follow U.S. Soccer and who speak Spanish, to have a Spanish-speaking coach that bridge hasn't really been crossed before, in a sense. Former national team coaches, perhaps they had that language barrier in trying to communicate things in the native language of a very large fanbase that speaks Spanish as their preferred language. It's great, and Mauricio can do that. Of course, he can address everyone in English as well, but this is a great plus to get people in the Hispanic communities to rally behind the USMNT.

Tractor Boys make a statement in the transfer market

After the previous summer saw Ipswich make little changes to the squad that earned promotion from League One, the Tractor Boys have changed their strategy during this window and brought a number of new players through the door at Portman Road.

The early passages of the summer saw Ipswich smash their record transfer fee as they paid an initial £20 million to bring Omari Hutchinson back to East Anglia on a permanent basis. Hutchinson was Kieran McKenna's top target for the window with the 20-year-old no doubt having a major role to play next season.

Following the Jamaica international to the South East were Jacob Greaves and Liam Delap, who joined from Hull City and Manchester City respectively. Ipswich's transfer business up to now is rounded off by the arrival of Ben Johnson on a free transfer and Arijanet Muric, who was relegated from the Premier League with Burnley last term.

The most recent rumours out of Portman Road has seen the Tractor Boys linked with further new signings. A recent link has suggested that Ipswich will return to Burnley for winger Wilson Odobert. After failing in their pursuit of Jaden Philogene, the Frenchman is likely seen as an alternative to the new Aston Villa man.

With Ipswich's transfer business clearly far from over, the Tractor Boys are now in talks to sign an experienced Championship defender.

Town in talks to sign Townsend

As reported by Independent Ipswich Town website TWTD, the Tractor Boys are in talks with West Brom regarding the signing of left-back Conor Townsend. The outlet claims that Ipswich are actively working on a deal to bring the 31-year-old to Portman Road this summer.

McKenna and Co have been on the hunt for a left-sided defender to support Leif Davis for much of the summer and it appears that they have found their man in Townsend. Despite last playing in the Premier League back in the 2020/21 season, there is no doubt that the defender would be an asset to Ipswich's side next term.

Townsend's career has seen him ply his trade in each of England's top five divisions, although the defender's most prolific spell has been with his current side West Brom. The 31-year-old has made 213 appearances for the Baggies across his near six year spell at the Hawthorns.

Whilst most will be familiar with Townsend's work as a West Brom player, the defender also earned praise during his time with Grimsby Town with former Mariners' boss Graham Alexander saying of the left back: “He was just a really good footballer, a good lad and really popular in the changing room.”

With Davis no doubt the first choice left back at Ipswich going into next season, the Tractor Boys could have a more than capable deputy on their hands if they can get a deal for Townsend over the line.
