Bopara finds form to answer Coles' fightback

Ravi Bopara scrambled some white-ball form as Essex defied Matt Coles’ fightback for Kent by chasing down 286 with five balls to spare

Essex’s captain Ravi Bopara batted himself back into form in white-ball cricket with a 78-ball 74 to take Essex to the top of the southern group in the Royal London Cup.Essex reached their 286-run target with five balls to spare to remain unbeaten in this season’s 50-over competition. That Essex had a sufficiently challenging total to chase was largely down to Matt Coles and an eighth-wicket partnership of 140 in 14.2 overs with James Tredwell.Coles savaged the Essex attack, bludgeoning 91 off 52 balls with 10 fours and five sixes after Kent, put in, had looked in serious trouble at 135 for 7, but his efforts proved to be to no avail.Bopara had struggled with the bat, scoring just 49 runs in seven previous one-day innings this season. It was not a swashbuckling knock by any means, with just one four to his account when he reached his half-century, but he kept the Essex reply on track with quickly-run singles and twos in fifty-plus partnerships with Dan Lawrence and Ryan ten Doeschate.”I’d got out to run-outs a couple of times, so that’s two innings where I might have got a lot of runs, who knows?,” Bopara said. “Then you put yourself under pressure if you’re not scoring, so it’s nice to get a few today. It was good as well ahead of the T20 tomorrow where we’ve got to be positive and hit the ball hard.”We consider ourselves as a chasing side – our batting is a lot stronger than our bowling. When you’re chasing you’re always going to be under pressure, you’re looking at the scoreboard and it jumps up from seven to nine and a half an over, but the idea is never to panic. As long as you keep your wickets in hand you’ve always got a very, very good chance.”Coles was disappointed that his efforts did not secure victory. “I think we should have been able to defend that total,” he said. “We knew it was going to be tight. Cowdrey bowled very well for us, and so did Tredwell, and I thought we started very well. But we ended up giving away 23 extras and that’s not brilliant.”Kent had passed 50 without alarms but Essex’s bowling breakthroughs began when Matt Quinn switched to the Hayes Close End.Joe Denly was beaten by movement off the pitch and was bowled for 28. Daniel Bell-Drummond had been becalmed after an early onslaught and departed in the 18th over for 28 when he played on to Quinn. And Quinn had his third wicket in his next over when he nipped one back to send Sam Northeast’s middle-stump cartwheeling.Ashar Zaidi’s first ball of his second spell accounted for Fabian Cowdrey, who chased a wide ball down legside and was stumped after managing just four runs from 22 balls.Sam Billings had obviously not paid attention as four balls later he fell in similar fashion. Zaidi’s delivery was so wide of off-stump it barely pitched on the cut strip, Billings fell and lost his bat in trying to reach back into the crease. James Foster dived to remove the bails. When Zaidi did bowl straight, Darren Stevens twice sent the ball soaring over the Pearce Stand towards the River Can for sixes.Alex Blake was sixth man out when he looked for a quick single as he pushed Zaidi to Jesse Ryder at square leg, only to slip as he tried to get back. Stevens went next as he tried for a third six off Zaidi, but was well held on the midwicket boundary by Nick Browne. At 135 for 7, Kent were in deep trouble. But Coles and Tredwell turned the visitors’ innings around and added fifty in 7.1 overs, with Coles hitting both Ryan ten Doeschate and Ravi Bopara straight for six.Bopara was particularly savaged, going for 35 off two overs before Coles reached his own half-century off 40 balls when he drove Quinn through the covers for two.Coles brought up the century partnership in exactly 12 overs with an uppish sweep off Bopara for four and then hoisted his third straight six next ball.Ten Doeschate was hit for successive sixes – over mid-off and midwicket – followed by a four before Coles was bowled going for another heave to depart for 91.Tredwell had been the silent partner in the partnership and finished 47 not out off 42 balls with six fours. In reply, Essex lost Tom Westley in the fifth over when he got a leading edge to steer Stevens to Denly at mid-off before Browne and Ryder settled into a largely serene period.Browne punished Stevens with a lob over the infield for four followed immediately by a six to long leg. The fifty partnership came up in 9.2 overs with Ryder slamming a full-toss from Ivan Thomas through midwicket for four followed by another uppishly through the covers.Ryder reached his individual fifty from 61 balls with a single off Tredwell, but popped the next delivery he faced into Stevens’s hands at backward point. He had helped put on 82 in 17.2 overs for the second wicket. Browne went in Tredwell’s next over, victim of a smart stumping by Billings for 49 from 60 balls.Tredwell, though, was punished by 18-year-old Dan Lawrence, who hoisted two successive straight sixes as he and Bopara clocked up a fifty-run partnership in 9.3 overs. Lawrence eventually went on 35, caught at deep extra cover by a tumbling Thomas off Cowdrey to end a 64-run partnership.Bopara reached a painstaking 50 off 64 balls with a solitary, straight-driven off Cowdrey early on. There were ironic cheers when he hit his second boundary, driving Coles through midwicket to move from 52 to 56.The fifth-wicket had just put on a century in 12 overs when ten Doeschate, attempting to win the game with one hit, holed out to Cowdrey on the extra cover boundary for 45.

Arsenal Could Sign Outstanding £140k-p/w Xhaka Upgrade

Arsenal could be set to take a monumental step towards bridging the gap with Manchester City, should they manage this reported coup…

What's the latest on Ilkay Gundogan's future?

This is in reference to the claims of David Ornstein, as he took to Twitter to issue an update on the Gunners' pursuit of Ilkay Gundogan, whose £140k-per-week deal at the Etihad is set to expire this summer.

In what has been a longstanding contract dispute, many European heavyweights have been alerted to the availability of the German international who has proven integral in Pep Guardiola's success this season.

Whilst the Spaniard has been vocal in his desire to tie the 32-year-old down, the journalist has instead tweeted: "Arsenal trying to sign Man City captain Ilkay Gundogan. Arteta wants 32yo if Xhaka goes. Fresh attempts will be made to keep him at MCFC + other options."

With Granit Xhaka nearing the Emirates exit door, the former Borussia Dortmund maestro would mark a huge upgrade on the Swiss general, should Mikel Arteta have his way.

How good is Ilkay Gundogan?

In Guardiola's unpredictable rotation cycle, few players' importance overrides a philosophy that has brought about unparalleled success.

However, with 30 league appearances from the 37 played, Gundogan has made the fifth-most starts of any within his squad, thriving as an all-around asset who excels in nearly every facet of the game.

From the engine room, he has scored eight goals, provided five assists, and won 2.8 duels per game all whilst maintaining a 7.15 average Sofascore rating as the captain of this historic team. It seems that as he has aged, his athleticism, experience and technical quality have all improved to make him one of the league's top-performing players.

Even though Xhaka has enjoyed a standout year in north London, which could well be his last, it pails in comparison to the mercurial maestro who Guardiola has dubbed "one of the best players I ever trained in my career."

With five goals, seven assists and a 7.01 average rating (via Sofascore), the 30-year-old Gunners ace will leave fans with a phenomenal lasting memory after a tumultuous start to his career there.

granit-xhaka-arsenal-transfer

However, should they tempt Gundogan to take his place, it might be somewhat overshadowed.

After all, this tireless City star already has five league titles to his name amongst numerous other trophies, contributing massively to each one. In 2021, he was lauded as a "goalscoring hero" by journalist Adam Bate, and yet he once again finds himself as an offensive threat who has been key in pushing them over the line.

Somehow he finds ways to reach new heights, alongside a manager who continues to revolutionise the game.

Perhaps he might be interested in now reuniting with the former coach of his, to spearhead a new regime that could finally topple the Citizens' monopoly on English football.

BCCI officials in Florida to discuss India-WI T20s in August

Officials from the BCCI are due to meet with members of the WICB in Florida on Wednesday and Thursday to discuss the possibility of staging a series of T20 internationals at the Central Broward Regional Park in Florida next month

If the matches between West Indies and India in the USA are confirmed, they are likely be played in late August after India’s four-Test tour of the Caribbean•Associated Press

Officials from the BCCI are due to meet with members of the WICB in Florida on Wednesday and Thursday to discuss the possibility of staging a series of T20 internationals at the Central Broward Regional Park in Florida next month.According to Duncan Finch, Broward Parks & Recreation Manager, WICB officials contacted him to discuss the availability for potentially hosting two-three T20Is in Florida at the conclusion of the ongoing four-Test series between West Indies and India, which is scheduled to end in Trinidad on August 22.”We had an email inquiring about late-August availability of the stadium by representatives of the WICB last week,” Finch told ESPNcricinfo. “We have August 24 to 27, and they were asking about Sunday, August 28, as well. We would have to cancel a small event to give them the Sunday.”Sources have also confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the WICB has reached out to the ICC for sanctioning permission to host the games in the USA. In 2012, the West Indies board had to go through the USA Cricket Association as the home governing body in America to receive approval to play two T20Is against New Zealand. That power, however, was stripped from USACA as part of the ICC’s decision to suspend the American board in June 2015. If an agreement can be reached, these would be the first Full Member matches in the USA since that 2012 series. The Florida facility will host six Caribbean Premier League games between July 28 and 31. The USA national team is also due to hold selection trial matches from August 1 to 3 to help finalise a 14-man squad for WCL Division Four in October. The square itself only contains four pitches, two of which are being used as center practice wickets for the CPL and the other two reserved for the six CPL matches, which could pose a challenge in terms of making sure there is a wicket prepared to a suitable standard at the stadium should an agreement be reached between the BCCI and WICB. However, the Lauderhill facility is the only ICC-certified ODI stadium in the USA, making it the only possible venue in the country to stage a potential T20I series. While no other cricket is scheduled to be held there until November, the facility is regularly rented out to FC Barcelona, who conducted a series of camps at the facility immediately prior to the CPL. The Fort Lauderdale Strikers, a second division US soccer franchise, also recently signed a contract to make the Central Broward Regional Park their new home stadium and training facility. The Strikers’ first game at the CBRP is August 20 with the next fixture after that scheduled for August 31. Though the cricket square was dug up three years ago and moved 20 yards north to protect it from being damaged by soccer use, the Strikers games could pose problems for maintaining the outfield, which was in poor condition following the FC Barcelona camps in late June and early July. CBRP ground staff have worked around the clock over the past week to improve the state of the outfield leading into the CPL games beginning on Thursday.

Sunderland Could Land Their Own Nagelsmann

Despite a sensational season which saw Sunderland narrowly miss out on the Championship playoff final, rumours are rife about Tony Mowbray's future at the Stadium of Light.

What's the latest on Mowbray's future at Sunderland?

The former Blackburn Rovers boss took over in the northeast following Alex Neil's shock move to Stoke City earlier in the season and has delivered far better results than many Sunderland fans would have dreamed of at the start of the campaign.

Last season's promotion from League One, via the playoffs, suggested that this season would be all about ensuring stability in the second tier, especially after losing the influential Neil.

However, Mowbray would go one further and took a depleted Black Cats squad into the top six on the final day, despite missing key players such as Ross Stewart and Danny Batth through injury.

Further injury concerns meant that Trai Hume would partner Luke O'Nien at centre-back in the away leg at Kenilworth Road, with natural wingers Lynden Gooch and Patrick Roberts featuring at full-back, so Mowbray cannot really be blamed for the defeat.

Remarkably, talkSPORT are claiming that the 59-year-old is now fighting to save his job at Sunderland, with three young European managers on a potential shortlist to replace him in the summer.

The same report claims that RB Salzburg boss Matthias Jaissle is currently top of that shortlist, with Francesco Farioli and ex-Barnsley boss Gerhard Struber also options for the Black Cats.

While it would be incredibly harsh to sack Mowbray following such an impressive campaign, the prospect of hiring a top young manager such as Jaissle is surely a hugely exciting one for the Black Cats, with the 35-year-old perhaps reminiscent of former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann.

RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann celebrates after the match vs Spurs

Who is Sunderland manager target Matthias Jaissle?

The German coach spent time working in RB Leipzig's academy before he was even 30, and he earned a move to Danish side Brondby, where he worked as an assistant manager for two seasons.

He then took on his first role at RB Salzburg as manager of the U18 side, where he earned a remarkable average of 2.78 points per game across 23 fixtures in charge, which saw him earn his first senior management role at FC Liefering in Austria.

Another successful spell would follow, as he averaged 2.12 points per game between January and June 2021, before he was deemed ready to take on the job at RB Salzburg following Jesse Marsch's upgrade to RB Leipzig.

He has since gone on to average a phenomenal 2.27 points per game, winning the Austrian title and cup thus far, which emphasises the winning mentality he could bring to the Stadium of Light.

Winning titles at such a young age is rarely seen in football management but Nagelsmann would achieve it at Bayern, having also made his name at Hoffenheim and another of Red Bull's sides in Germany.

The similarities are apparent and while it would be a big gamble to replace Mowbray, Sunderland could just find themselves a gem if they appoint Jaissle this summer.

Northants surrender as Henry leaves parting gift

Matt Henry left promotion-chasing Worcestershire a parting gift as Northants succumbed meekly to a three-day defeat

Through fight, skill and sheer bloody-mindedness, Worcestershire secured their first win at Wantage Road since 2006, by 311 runs without the need for a fourth day. “At least we’ve got the day off tomorrow,” said a non-playing employee clearing up in the members lounge, as the players left the field just before 6pm on day three. They were probably oblivious to the fact that this was Northants’ heaviest run defeat to Worcestershire and seventh worst against any side. Still, much of their season has been about locating that silver lining. As a club, that comes in the form of a dressing room full of players reveling in each other’s company, marching on as uncertainty looms around them. In performance, strong showings in white ball cricket – they top the North Group of the T20Blast and are still in the hunt for the latter stages of the Royal London Cup – offer a welcome antidote to a Championship summer that sees them winless, with 10 of 18 matches played.Even so, you would struggle to excuse their second innings effort today. Faced with a target of 454 that was less carrot and more stick, they ambled their way through questionable drive after misguided swish across the line, before Monty Panesar added the comical run-up on top of the rotten cake that was their 142 all out.”Only one or two escaped with their pride intact,” said Northants head coach David Ripley, surveying the wreckage. He was almost impressed that his side managed to lose the match as emphatically as they did considering the position they were in on day oneWith Worcestershire 54 for 5 inside the first 20 overs of the match, having chosen to bat first, a three-day finish was always on the cards. Yet it was the visitors endeavor that allowed them to turn things around. In typically bad form for guests, they outstayed their hosts and drank them out of victory beer. Worcestershire’s attitude across the three days could not be faulted. That’s not to say that they did not have some redemption of their own to achieve. Their displays in limited overs cricket in the last month have stalled and victory here moves them into second, a point behind Division Two leaders Essex. The work on day three began at the crease. Nightwatchman Ed Barnard might not have had much luck with the ball but, bat in hand, he pitched in with 34 alongside Ross Whiteley, who crunched three sixes in a 36-ball 45. One of those sixes – hit over wide mid off - caused such havoc in the balcony of the Spencer Pavilion that a few patrons went back inside until the Worcestershire innings was called to a halt at 324 for eight. The 454 target on the electronic scoreboard, beaming next to Northamptonshire’s second innings score, mocked them as much as the 148 on the other side. This game was lost when they conceded a lead of 129 in the first innings. But there were still wickets to be taken and, in Matt Henry’s final Championship match of the season, he led the line with five for 36.He was meant to have his feet up for this fixture. But when Kyle Abbott had to pull out because of a swollen foot, a call was put in to New Zealand to see if Henry could get clearance for this match. His last appearance for Worcestershire will come on Friday against the Birmingham Bears in the T20 Blast before he jets off the next morning to South Africa for a training camp, ahead of New Zealand’s tour to Zimbabwe. That international class was on show throughout today, particularly with the dismissal of Rob Newton: a good length ball that had the number three’s feet neither forward nor back, leaving him at the last moment to take his outside edge through to Ben Cox. He did Rob Keogh (bowled) and Richard Levi (LBW) with a bit of extra zip, before the hook-happy pairing of Steven Crook and Seekuge Prasanna gave him a maiden five-fer for Worcestershire. He ends with 27 wickets across six Championship matches.Joe Leach continued his fine season with two for 49 to add to his season’s best five for 70 that he achieved in the first innings. He is now the leading wicket-taker in the Division with 38. George Rhodes, son of Worcestershire’s director of cricket Steve Rhodes, also nabbed his maiden Championship wicket – Cox taking a skier off Ben Sanderson – to dollop more cheer into Worcestershire’s red ball pot. Northants continue to stew in theirs.

Computer says yes as Coles is named for North-South fixtures

A computerised rankings system has gone where the selectors have been reluctant to tread, by offering Kent’s troubled allrounder, Matt Coles, an opportunity to make his case for England’s one-day squad

A computerised rankings system has gone where the selectors have been reluctant to tread, by offering Kent’s troubled allrounder, Matt Coles, an opportunity to make his case for England’s one-day squad when the inaugural North v South series takes place in the UAE next March.Coles, who was left out of Kent’s County Championship fixture against Derbyshire in June following a drink-related incident, was suspended by the ECB for two further Championship matches after being found guilty of throwing the ball in a dangerous manner during their victory against Glamorgan in May. In 2013, Coles was also sent home from an England Lions tour of Australia due to excessive drinking (the same punishment also handed to Ben Stokes). However, his recent one-day form has been impressive. He claimed figures of 6 for 56 against Hampshire, his former county, last week, and 4 for 39, with an economy rate of 4.33, against Sussex yesterday, to finish third in the Professional Cricketers’ Association MVP Rankings for the Royal London Cup, the system by which eight of the squad members for the North v South series have been selected.Tim Bresnan, Harry Gurney and Liam Dawson are three previously capped England players to have made the MVP cut, with the England Lions batsman Ben Duckett, the Northamptonshire left-arm spinner Graeme White, and the Somerset pair of Lewis Gregory and Tim Groenewald also in the mix.Duckett has been in prolific form of late, both for Northamptonshire and the Lions, making unbeaten scores of 163 and 220 in the recent triangular series with Sri Lanka A and Pakistan A although it is purely his Royal London Cup form that has earned this selection.”I had been following the MVP for the last few games when I realised I was in the mix and it put a bit more on the games we had left,” said Groenewald, who was born and raised in South Africa but who has lived in England for 12 years. “I’m really happy to be involved in something like this particularly with it being the first one and it should be a really good tournament. The PCA and the ECB’s National Cricket Performance Centre at Loughborough have worked closely to enhance the PCA MVP formula, which was first introduced in 2007.The rankings system identifies the match-winners and key influencers of matches, using a formula that measures each player’s total contribution by taking into account conditions, quality of opposition, captaincy and strike rates, as well as runs scored and wickets taken. The remaining players in the North v South series will be chosen by the England selectors, who will have not only the 2019 World Cup in their thoughts, but also the 2017 Champions Trophy, which will be hosted in England in June, three months after the UAE series.”It’s brilliant how the system has worked giving an incentive from guys outside the England set-up to work for,” said Groenewald. “I am sure there will be some really good players out there, players who will be playing in the next World Cup so it’s brilliant to be involved in this tournament.””The North v South series is something that there has been a lot of banter about in the dressing room since the start of the competition and as we got close to the end of the group stage I knew that I was there or thereabouts,” said Gurney, who made his last international appearance in December 2014.”It’s a good opportunity for someone like me just to remind the selectors that I can still do it and that I believe that I have still got an awful lot to offer the international game. It’s up to me now to persuade them that’s still the case.”
