How a brief shower became a long delay

Boundary boards that didn’t move to allow quicker removal of covers, an inexperienced ground staff, no PA system to let spectators know play is called off early. All packed in one day after celebrations of India’s 500th Test

While leeway has to be made for the drainage conditions in Kanpur, the ground staff, too, did not show alacrity in covering the surface once the downpour began•BCCI

A day after India made grand celebrations of their 500th Test, there were potentially embarrassing scenes of the ground staff just standing on the covers in the bright sunshine and not knowing what to do. An hour-long spell of rain, which began as a fine drizzle for the first 10 minutes and was an even finer drizzle in the last 10 minutes, ended up washing out the final session. It began to drizzle just as the players walked off for tea at 2.10pm, and the ground staff was out on the covers at 3.10pm. At an inspection at 3.50pm, the umpires asked the curator how long it would take to get the ground ready. When he asked for another hour and a quarter, the day’s play was called off. These two teams have been witness to much worse in their recent Tests in the West Indies and South Africa, but the spectators were left wondering why the ground staff didn’t even try to get the covers off in a hurry. On the surface the whole process looked really inefficient and amateurish, not to mention inexperienced. However, leeway has to be made for the facts of this case too. Green Park is an old ground owned by the government so there can’t be any structural improvements made to its drainage. At least the BCCI can’t do it. The ground staff, BCCI’s employees, were now left with the task of getting the covers off the field without spilling any water onto the ground. They have two super soppers but decided against using it because according to them there was just too much water on the covers. The big drawback was the LED advertising boards about five metres behind the rope. The boundary triangles proved to be a hindrance too. Had they been able to use the 30 metres behind the boundary boards without having to skip over the foam triangles, they would have been able to throw off the water much faster. One member of the ground staff said they tried to get it done, but couldn’t. They didn’t make any guarantees they would have been able to make play possible, but admitted the process would have been much faster had the advertising boards been removed. With things standing as they did, the ground staff had to take extreme caution because spillage on this ground with no drainage underneath could have resulted in substantial loss of play on the third day. That doesn’t absolve them of the lack of alacrity in getting the covers on – it took them 15 minutes to get them on, and when it was pouring they were still readjusting the covers. At one point, once the rain had stopped, some groundsmen stood with covers in their hands and nothing to do for close to 10 minutes. While there can be leeway given for no play after tea, there cannot be any for the fact that even 20 minutes after the play was called off, there was no announcement made to the effect. The big screens showed just the score, and the crowd still kept waiting in the stands, braving the heat after having somehow sat through the rain. It was only when the commentators came on to the field for their post-play analysis that they decided to leave. A day after the 500th Test celebrations, when the BCCI should have renewed its commitment to the fans who have made the journey possible, they remained last on the priority list.

Arsenal Make Contact To Sign 18 y/o Gem

Arsenal are thought to be leading the race to sign Fenerbahce gem Arda Guler after making contact with the player’s family.

What’s the latest Arsenal transfer news?

The Gunners appear to be looking to make relatively early moves in the transfer window following an exciting season under Mikel Arteta.

The club fell just short in the Premier League title race with Manchester City, but it seems as if Arteta and sporting director Edu Gaspar are working on bolstering the squad at the Emirates.

A top target appears to be West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, with an offer set to be made following the Hammers’ European final. However, another target appears to be Guler, with an exciting update emerging.

According to Turkish Football, Arsenal, along with Premier League rivals Newcastle United, appear to be in pole position as they are leading the race for the Fenerbahce gem.

Both clubs have made contact with Guler’s family who represent him and are preparing an official move. The player is thought to be keen on a move to a top European league and is expected to become in demand this summer, with Arsenal wanting to move early.

Who is Arda Guler?

Guler is just 18 years of age and is primarily an attacking midfielder who can also play on the right wing or in a deeper midfield role and is under contract until 2025.

Already a senior Turkey international, Guler is currently valued at a career-high €11m Transfermarkt valuation and has a sponsorship with Nike.

The teenager has already racked up 49 senior appearances for Fenerbahce, contributing to 20 goals and has been catching the eye amongst some of football’s greats. Italy legend Andrea Pirlo has been full of praise for the Guler, saying:

"Arda Guler is a very talented player. He has the potential to play anywhere in the world. He has quality, he can read the game well, and he has great technique. If he keeps developing his game, there is no limit to his potential."

It looks as if Guler could well be a top performer in the making, and with former Arsenal and Germany star Mesut Ozil also saying he can go on and become a "world star" in the future, a move to the Emirates over the coming months could be an extremely shrewd move by all those in north London.

Man United Fighting Barcelona To Sign £34m-Rated Midfielder

Manchester United have Sofyan Amrabat on their wanted list this summer and are set to battle Barcelona to get a deal done, as reported by Calciomercato via Sport Witness.

Who is Sofyan Amrabat?

Amrabat has once more been a regular first-team player for current club Fiorentina this season, managing 29 league appearances for the club with one assist. He's now played more games for the Italian side in the league than any other club over the course of his career too, with 83 outings to his name to date. It shows just how important the midfielder has become to the side since his move from Club Brugge in Belgium.

In fact, the 26-year-old has now become one of the most impressive players in his position for passing in the Big Five leagues. His 67.12 passes per 90 means that he is in the 89th percentile for that figure (or the top 11%). Even more impressive is that despite attempting so many passes, he actually ranks in the top five percent in his position for pass completion rate and the top eight percent for progressive passes.

His vision and ability to control the player and get the ball forward with his excellent passing range has now caught the eye of two big European sides. According to a report from Calciomercato via Sport Witness, both Manchester United and Barcelona are keen to sign the player after he said "goodbye" to his current team following their Europa Conference League final defeat.

However, the report adds that United may have the upper hand though because of their financial power compared to the Catalan outfit. Fiorentina have slapped a 40 million Euro (or £34m) price tag on his head and the Red Devils are more able to pay that fee compared to Barcelona.

Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat

Should Amrabat join Man United?

The midfielder could certainly help bolster the Premier League side's ranks in the centre of the field if he was to join. Erik Ten Hag would be getting a player that is not only a good passer of the ball as previously shown but can also get the ball forward himself, with a knack for dribbling and driving the play forward himself. His rate of 1.62 progressive carries per 90 mark him out as better than average in his position (67th percentile) for example and his 70.6% successful take on rate show that he is able to not only get the ball forward but beat his man too.

In addition, football journalist Josh Bunting has previously hailed the player as "outstanding," admitting that during the Europa Conference League Final the midfielder "ran the game."

Amrabat then is certainly talented and his ability to dictate the play could come in useful at Old Trafford if they did sign him.

Darren Stevens will continue his Kent career at the age of 41 next season after agreeing a new one-year deal with the county.Stevens, who was awarded a benefit year in 2016, had been out of contract at the end of the season, but demonstrated his enduring worth with a strong all-round showing to help the club finish second in Division Two of the County Championship.”Darren has given so much to Kent that all along we have wanted him to remain with us and are delighted that he has made that decision,” said Graham Johnson, Kent’s chairman of cricket.”I’m sure all Kent supporters will greet the news with delight, help him round off his benefit year in style and look forward to his contribution to further develop what has been achieved to date.”In the first-class season, Stevens made 782 runs at 48.87, and claimed 37 wickets at 30.56. He also made a strong case for his retention with an innings of 136 in Kent’s final game of the season, against the Division Two champions, Essex. After that match, Stevens said: “I love this place and I don’t want to go anywhere else, so my hope is that we can sort something out because I feel I’ve still got two years left in me. I still have passion for the club and for these lads and I want to be successful, so we’ll have to see what happens.”I always love scoring runs and get more satisfaction from scoring runs being that Kent signed me as a batsman. I’ve obviously turned myself into a bit of an all-rounder in the meantime, but my main job is to get runs and the past couple of months have been pretty enjoyable in that regard.”

Arsenal Battling Spurs In The Race For £20k-p/w "Lion"

Arsenal are battling Tottenham Hotspur and multiple other clubs in the race for Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson, according to journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

With reports indicating that Ben White is poised to switch back to a central role next season, Arsenal have set their sights on bringing in a new right-back, and they have reportedly already made an offer for Galatasaray's Sacha Boey.

The Gunners have tabled a bid worth £12m for Boey after meeting with Galatasaray vice-president Erden Timur in London, however the Turkish side are holding out for £17m, which means the offer may need to be increased.

Another option being considered by Mikel Arteta is Manchester City's Joao Cancelo, who the Spaniard knows well from their time working together at the Etihad Stadium, and a bid of around £35m may be launched in the coming days.

Not only is a move for a new right-back in the offing, the Gunners have also identified Galatsaray centre-back Nelsson as a potential target, with Sports Digitale's Sabuncuohlu taking to Twitter to confirm they are in the race for his signature.

The journalist claims that a whole host of teams are battling it out for the Denmark international, including Arsenal, Tottenham, Sevilla, Atalanta and Borussia Dortmund.

However, the English clubs may hold a major advantage, as the centre-back's "first choice" is a move to the Premier League.

Who is Victor Nelsson?

The Dane does not have any experience in one of Europe's "big five" leagues, having spent the majority of his career in his home country, during spells with FC Nordsjaelland and FC Copenhagen, before moving to Galatasaray.

However, the Hornbaek-born defender has played a vital role for his current club en-route to winning the Turkish Super Lig title, which is now mathematically confirmed, recording 35 appearances in all competitions this season.

It is fair to say the £20k-per-week ace has done enough to impress the Galatasaray hierarchy, with board member Resit Omer Kukner branding him a "Danish lion", while praising him for his "attitude on and off the pitch".

Football scout Jacek Kulig has also highlighted Nelsson's leadership skills, and claims that he is capable of playing as a defensive midfielder, showcasing his versatility.

That said, if White is switching to a central role next season, Arsenal would be better off bringing in a new right-back, and they should instead focus on signing Cancelo, who has proven himself in the Premier League over a number of years.

England tour MoU not yet signed because of BCCI-Lodha impasse

With less than a week to go before the start of India’s first Test against England, the BCCI and ECB have not signed the Memorandum of Understanding

There’s paperwork pending before India plays England•AFP

With less than a week to go before the start of India’s first Test against England, the BCCI and ECB have not signed the Memorandum of Understanding, a standard agreement that details various aspects of bilateral series. The main reason for the delay in signing the MoU is that the BCCI is awaiting directions from the Lodha Committee. A big part of the MoU says the BCCI will bear all the costs pertaining to the England team during the tour. Normally the BCCI would directly approve such expenses, but because of the order passed by the Supreme Court on October 21, the board has to get approval from the Lodha Committee, which has been appointed to oversee all financial transactions of the BCCI.In its response to the BCCI, however, the Lodha Committee said forming cricket policy was not part of its remit, but that directions regarding payments could only be given after the BCCI provided more information about the transactions. The committee has given the BCCI five days to respond with details of various contracts the board said it needed to finalise in the next year to avoid disruption of daily business. But before proceeding with the matter of existing and future BCCI contracts, including the MoU with the ECB, the Lodha Committee reminded the board that an unequivocal undertaking was required from the president Anurag Thakur that the BCCI would implement the court order of October 21.  The court had asked Thakur and board secretary Ajay Shirke to file affidavits in two weeks from October 21 and appear before the committee. As of November 3, Thakur had not given such an undertaking and he and Shirke had not met the committee either.BCCI and ECB officials were not available for comment about whether an unsigned MoU could jeopardise England’s tour of India, but an official from another board said an international tour could still proceed without it. An MoU is only used in case of a dispute between the two boards involved in a bilateral series. In an email on Thursday to BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke, the Lodha Committee asked the board to obey the three orders the Supreme Court passed on July 18, October 7 and 21. “To avoid any hindrance to the cricketing calendar and to ensure the continued enjoyment of the sport by its aficionados, the BCCI would be well advised to comply with the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court in its orders dated 18th July 2016, 7th October 2016 and 21st October 2016,” the committee e-mail said.On October 21, the Supreme Court had directed the BCCI not to distribute funds to state associations until they agreed to comply with the Lodha Committee’s recommendations, which the court had approved in an order on July 18. The court also asked Shirke and Thakur to meet the Lodha Committee by November 3 and placed several restrictions on the board’s ability to enter into contracts. The committee had already sent Thakur an email reminder earlier this week and it told Shirke on Thursday: “The requirement for such an undertaking is not a mere formality. In the absence of the undertaking, the Committee finds it difficult to implement the order of the Supreme Court by issuing necessary directions to BCCI.”On October 28, Shirke had sent an email to the committee, asking for intervention on a “priority basis” because failing to do so would “severely prejudice” cricket operations. Shirke told the committee that decisions concerning a lot of important contracts had been left pending.Among the contracts mentioned was the postponed IPL tender, finalising vendors for the IPL and international and domestic cricket, and title and shirt sponsorships for the India men’s team. Shirke also said the BCCI needed clarity regarding the “threshold value”, above which the contracts needed to go through the Lodha Committee as mandated by the Supreme Court order. The court also asked the committee to appoint an independent auditor to oversee the BCCI’s transactions.Shirke said that since the court had appointed the Committee as the “custodian of revenue and finances” of the BCCI, it should act immediately. The board, Shirke said, feared that the “uncertainty” might have already “devalued” the size of the bids expected for the IPL television and digital rights. In its response today, the committee told Shirke that finalising vendors was not its job. “Please note that neither identification nor appointment of vendors or contractors is the task or function of the Committee. The Committee is only required to fix a threshold value and approving awards of contracts above such threshold value.”In order to “fix” the threshold value and appoint an auditor, the committee asked Shirke to provide details of the contracts such as the value, term, expiry date of existing contract, the nature of the tender process and so on. “It is only on examining the above that the Committee would be able to fix a threshold value and also assess the nature of work involved for appointing the independent auditor and formulating his terms of engagement,” the committee said.In another email, Shirke told the committee the BCCI had to give a commitment to the ECB regarding incurring expenses for England’s tour of India. He asked the committee to set the terms and conditions and the “manner in which” the agreement should be executed. Shirke had also written to the five state associations hosting the England Tests, asking if they had enough funds to stage the matches. The Committee, however, said that framing the MoU was not part of the court’s order. “The proposed MoU between BCCI and ECB concerns bilateral cricketing policy, the formulation of which is not a part of the mandate of the Committee. As far as payments are concerned, if they are to be made directly by the BCCI, no directions can be given by this Committee until relevant details are furnished by the BCCI.”It is understood that Shirke sent the committee the unsigned MoU via email late on November 3 evening, but despite being asked for details the email did not contain what the Lodha Committee wanted.

Nurse, Holder help West Indies defend 227 for bonus-point win

Jason Holder’s opening burst and debutant Ashley Nurse’s three wickets helped West Indies defend 227 on a deteriorating Harare pitch and seal a bonus-point win over Sri Lanka

The Report by Nikhil Kalro16-Nov-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsJason Holder’s figures of 8-0-16-2 set the tone for West Indies’ win•AFP

West Indies’ bowlers, led by Jason Holder and Ashley Nurse, defended 227 on a deteriorating Harare pitch to register a bonus-point win, their first against Sri Lanka at a neutral venue since 1999. West Indies may not have had as much had it not been for enterprising cameos from Jonathan Carter and debutant Rovman Powell.Holder set the tone with a sensational opening spell of swing bowling in which he picked up two wickets and conceded 12 in five overs. He had Dhananjaya de Silva caught behind off an inside edge and drew Kusal Mendis forward with a full delivery that swung away late and took the outside edge. Nurse took a reverse-cupped catch in front of his face at second slip. In between, Johnson Charles effected an agile run-out of Kusal Perera, hitting the stumps directly from square leg.The pitch seemed to slow down as the afternoon wore on with more than a few balls stopping in the surface. Nurse dismissed Sri Lanka captain Upul Tharanga with one such delivery. It pitched on leg, drawing Tharanga into a flick, but the ball spun and bounced extravagantly to take the leading edge and lobbed back to the bowler.A few overs later, Nurse beat the defense of Asela Gunaratne and trapped him in front with what looked like an innocuous offbreak. Suddenly, Sri Lanka had slumped to 79 for 6 on a surface that was getting increasingly harder to bat on, making West Indies’ score of 227 seem a lot more.Sachith Pathirana and Shehan Jayasuriya kept Sri Lanka in the hunt with a 60-run seventh-wicket partnership, but too much damage had been done too early. Nurse finished with 3 for 46, while Shannon Gabriel claimed the last two wickets to return 3 for 31.West Indies’ first away ODI win since the 2015 World Cup was achieved after Jason Holder had lost his sixth straight toss and West Indies were put in. For most of their recent ODI series against Pakistan, their focus was on their biggest strength: power-hitting, as opposed to strike-rotation. It seemed like West Indies had intentionally swapped their strategy, with mixed results.West Indies’ major concern would have been negotiating a testing opening spell in gloomy conditions. Their batsmen were adept at doing so, albeit on a morning with less swing available than in the tri-series opener two days ago.Sri Lanka nipped out the openers in that period, including the run-out of Kraigg Brathwaite who plonked his bat on the crease while completing a run. The bat jarred in the turf and bounced up as Nuwan Kulasekara’s direct hit from mid-on found him short.Debutant Shai Hope and Evin Lewis, a T20 specialist, were then forced to stabilise a faltering innings. As the slower bowlers were introduced, the pair looked in so much discomfort in finding gaps that West Indies could only muster 51 runs between overs 11 and 25. The Harare pitch had begun to deteriorate and the Sri Lanka spinners strangled the batsmen. West Indies had cut out expansive shots on their own volition, and Sri Lanka closed the gaps.Carter, an ODI specialist, found his rhythm from the outset, hitting gaps and finding singles by looking for them. He struck 54, and picked off two fours and two sixes in a 62-ball knock filled with intent.Powell displayed his ball-striking ability in his 29-ball 44, an innings that featured two fours and three muscular sixes into the leg side, all a result of a strong bottom hand.Just when West Indies looked set for a score in excess of 250, Sri Lanka’s seamers returned in the end overs to trigger a collapse. West Indies lost their last five wickets for 18 runs.
