Rangers Interested In "Magnificent" £4.1m Gem

Glasgow Rangers are showing interest in winger Kwadwo Opoku ahead of the summer transfer window as Michael Beale looks set to continue with his Ibrox rebuild.

What’s the latest on Kwadwo Opoku to Rangers?

According to German outlet Fussball Transfers, Rangers have ‘signalled interest’ in winger Opoku, who plays for MLS side Los Angeles FC.

The Light Blues aren’t alone however, with Old Firm rivals Celtic also keen, alongside Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart, while several teams from Ligue 1 and the Premier League also keeping tabs on the player, as Beale faces stiff competition.

He could cost the Gers around €4.8m (£4.1m) if any move was to be sealed, which is surely within the 42-year-old's budget this summer.

Could Kwadwo Opoku move to Rangers?

With Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos departing Rangers, it’s clear Beale needs reinforcements both in the wide positions and through the middle heading into next season.

One key issue the manager has is in the right-wing area, which could well be fixed by signing Opoku.

Todd Cantwell has shone when being deployed there during his first few months at the Gers, registering 11 goal contributions from 20 games, however, with Malik Tillman returning to Bayern Munich following his loan spell, the Englishman could be pushed to a more central role in 2023/2024.

The LAFC winger has enjoyed success in America, registering 11 goal contributions during the 2022 season as he led his team to the MLS Cup, and he has continued this rich vein of form into the current campaign.

Two goals and two assists in 13 league matches underline his attacking potential from a wide position, and he averages two shots per game, makes 0.8 key passes per game and has created two big chances, solid numbers from the 21-year-old.

According to WhoScored, Opoku’s strengths include passing and long shots, while he typically likes to cut inside and dribble past opponents as often as possible, suggesting that he tends to make things happen as opposed to being static and waiting for the right chance to drop.

Rangers boss Michael Beale.

This proactive nature could be crucial for Rangers next term, especially with goals paramount for success, both domestically and in Europe, as Celtic scored 21 more times in the league than the Ibrox side last season, a key factor to where the title eventually ended up.

For just over £4m, the “magnificent” Ghanaian – as so dubbed by journalist Owuraku Ampofo – could be a wise investment and given he has plenty of experience in scoring and creating chances for others, it’s a move that makes perfect sense in the long run.

India close in after Kohli's epic double-hundred

After posting 631, a lead of 231, India chipped away at England’s line-up to leave them six down and in need of miracle to save the Mumbai Test

The Report by Alagappan Muthu11-Dec-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details4:04

Ganguly: Kohli the best across formats in 2016

With his sublime 235 off 340 balls, with 25 fours and a six, Virat Kohli became the first Indian to three double-centuries in a year. As soon as he left the crease and England were in to bat the pitch began to look like a minefield. The visitors were trailing by 49 runs at stumps and had only four wickets in hand to mount a challenge. Their plight – especially after scoring 400 in the first innings – was largely due to one man. And it was to see that man bat that people thronged to Wankhede stadium.Kohli broke a slew of records. The most runs by an Indian in a series against England – Rahul Dravid was left behind. The most runs in an innings by an India captain – MS Dhoni was left behind. In 2016, he has made 1200 runs at an average of 80 and a strike-rate of 60.Making the day sweeter for India was Jayant Yadav, who made 104 off 204 balls in a record stand of 241 for the eighth wicket. He had the highest score at No. 9 (211) and was part of the largest eighth-wicket partnership (392) in Indian first-class cricket. Having replaced the man with whom he put on that partnership – Haryana’s Amit Mishra – he came to hold the corresponding records for India in Test cricket too.The spotlight wouldn’t budge from Kohli, though. A crunching straight drive in the first over of the day converted his fourth successive hundred into a 150-plus score. In the 162nd, he only rolled his wrists on a straight delivery, but it skipped away to the backward square leg boundary. The timing was such that it beat England’s best fielder Ben Stokes, and the placement was such that it was well to the right of the man.Kohli batted for over eight hours. The concentration it must have taken, the mental and physical strain he must have felt to play an innings of such quality on a difficult pitch was finally on view as he walked off for lunch with a tired smile on his face. In the dressing room, everyone from the support staff to his team-mates patted him on the back. When he came out in the second session, he biffed Chris Woakes back over his head for a six and ran like mad for a single next ball. The shot the fans cared about most came a little earlier. A gentle little flick in the 165th over, all along the ground, to the left of midwicket. It raised Kohli’s 200. Smart phones were out to record the moment. Anil Kumble’s camera didn’t miss it either. A little slice of history to put in the back pocket. In all of Test cricket, only five men have made three or more double-hundreds in a year: Don Bradman, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, Brendon McCullum and now Kohli.England’s response to that innings came from Joe Root. If it hadn’t been for his firebrand style of play England may never have reduced their deficit to 49 at stumps. Root made 77 off only 103 balls against two of the best spinners in the world on a surface that had become rank.Considering it had waited 312 overs to do so should make it immune to criticism. Besides, it’s pace was true. That meant batsmen picking length early and looking to score first and defend second would flourish. Root exemplified those characteristics well as he swept the spinners hard and stepped down the track often to take balls on the full and paste them through the covers. India were forced to pull the close catchers out and Root inside edged Ashwin to short leg when there was no one there. He fell lbw to Jayant in the last hour of play, deceived into going back to a full delivery because its pace was quicker and trajectory was flatter. These are the kinds of tricks that made India such a force in their own conditions. That and their accuracy, which separated them from England’s, especially where the scorecard was concerned.Anything on the fourth day at Wankhede would turn. A straight line drawn on it would come out a semi-circle. India turned to spin in the eighth over and Ravindra Jadeja got the ball to turn square thrice in a row. Close catchers buzzed around the batsman like mosquitoes, and puffs of dust erupted even off the undisturbed parts of the surface let alone the rough.Alastair Cook was the visitors’ best bet at playing time. Two overs before tea, however, he went back in an effort to flick a good length ball with the turn through square leg. But Jadeja, by virtue of being quicker through the air, had the England captain hurrying into his shot, losing his shape and out lbw. It was Jadeja’s 100th wicket in his 24th Test; equal fastest to the mark with Ryan Harris and Lance Gibbs and one match slower than Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Saqlain Mushtaq.Moeen Ali came out to bat with four men crowding him. He picked one of them out, extra bounce making his little nudge off the hip carry to M Vijay’s right at leg gully. In the five minutes to tea, England had lost two wickets to add to Keaton Jennings’ golden duck.Jonny Bairstow resisted with an unbeaten 50, producing some memorable moments. He tried to shoulder arms to a ball from R Ashwin pitching about four feet outside the line of off stump only to have it strike him on the stomach. He went to cut the same bowler and was beaten by the turn that was so sharp it went past the wicketkeeper’s left. His use of DRS was pristine as well. He was given out twice in the space of five overs but used the technology to save himself. Not everyone enjoyed Bairstow’s street-smarts though. Umpire Bruce Oxenford actually threw his head back in exasperation at the second review, which was asked for so quickly he possibly knew he had made a mistake and giving the batsman out caught at short leg.England were very nervy in the last 15-20 minutes minutes, into which India squeezed five overs. Indeed, Jadeja finished one in a minute or so to give Ashwin a go at the nightwatchman, Jake Ball, and did him with a topspinner to end the day. They had lost Ben Stokes prior to that, reverse sweeping the ball onto his boot for second slip to catch it on the rebound. It was a bit cruel all this happened to England on the same day they conceded 180 runs at 4.44 runs per over.India’s overnight lead was 51. They had got seven wickets and if the remaining three had fallen quickly, Cook and his men may have felt they still had a chance. In 34 overs on the fourth morning, there wasn’t a single breakthrough. When India were finally all out after lunch, they had pulled ahead by 231 runs.Kohli was the ninth wicket to fall when his lofted drive carried to deep extra cover. Plenty of England players came to congratulate him, including Stokes and Bairstow. All at the Wankhede stadium were on their feet. His partner for much of the day, Jayant, had begun by scything a half-volley from Rashid through the covers and then the ensuing short ball was cut behind point. He was more than a match for an inswinging yorker from Ball in the 149th over and the good length delivery that followed was driven to the cover boundary with some style.Jayant seems to think like a top-order batsman. He spotted mid-on was up with Moeen bowling around the wicket in the 155th over, danced down the track and lofted the ball over the fielder’s head. Cook put a long-on in for the next ball and the batsman tapped a single to him. Jayant outscored Kohli in the first hour, 42 runs to 36, en route to sweeping records of his own.Having allowed the opposition’s eighth wicket to post more than 200 runs for the first time since 1908, England were able to knock India’s No. 10 and 11 quickly enough. Small mercies.

£86m-Rated “Scary” Man United Target Wants Old Trafford Move

Manchester United's reported summer target Rasmus Hojlund is believed to be seriously keen on a potential move to Old Trafford this summer.

How much does Rasmus Hojlund earn?

This summer offered the prospect of potentially significant changes at the helm of the Red Devils with the Glaze family locked in talks over a possible sale of the club.

However, with the summer transfer window now open, there is yet to be any major movement to suggest a potential takeover will be completed in the coming weeks.

And as a result, this will have likely played a role in the calibre of player who Erik ten Hag and co may be able to target over the course of the summer.

This has potentially been the case when it comes to their search for their next striker with reports suggesting the Red Devils have pulled out of the race for Harry Kane.

Indeed, it is believed Tottenham Hotspur will be looking for too high of an asking price to allow their star man to depart over the coming weeks/months.

But reports still continue to link United with a potential move for the young Denmark striker, Hojlund,

The 20-year-old is believed to be earning in the region of £10k-per-week at the Serie A side Atalanta.

And speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has claimed the youngster has his eyes set on a possible move to Old Trafford this summer:

"But for sure, Man United had contacts on the player's side. They appreciate the player and they know that, in this case, Hojlund wants Manchester United.

"Rasmus Hojlund really, really wants Man United move. So this is helping United. But let's see how the conversation will be with Atalanta. It's always tough to negotiate with them but the player is on Man United's side."

Who is Rasmus Hojlund?

The Red Devils are in dire need of an out-and-out striker this summer after seeing out the 2022/23 campaign with just Wout Weghorst at Ten Hag's disposal.

However, it could be a huge ask to expect Hojlund to be the player to come in and dominate the front line for the Premier League giants.

After all, he is still just 20 years old and his experience in men's football is extremely limited.

Erik ten Hag

Indeed, although Hojlund is beginning to make a name for himself in the Atalanta side in Serie A, he has only played 32 times in one of Europe's top five leagues (via Transfermarkt).

And it is believed the Serie A side have placed a considerable price tag on the head of the or young prospect.

Having been hailed as "scary quick" by some in the media, reports would suggest Atalanta are looking for a bid in the region of £86m to allow the Dane to leave this summer.

And when you consider it could take around £100m for Kane, it has to be questioned whether this poses good value for the Red Devils.

Leeds Exit Rumour Emerges Regarding £30k-A-Week Ace

Leeds United are "willing to listen to offers" for goalkeeper Illan Meslier this summer, according to a fresh update regarding his future.

Is Meslier likely to leave Leeds?

The Frenchman has been an impressive servant for the Whites since joining from Lorient in 2020 – he previously spent a season on loan at the club – emerging as an exciting young 'keeper with a bright future ahead of him.

Meslier was unable to prevent Leeds from going down to the Championship last month, however, and his form left a lot to be desired during a key point in the campaign. The £30,000-a-week Frenchman has a deal at Elland Road that runs until the summer of 2026, but it seems increasingly likely that he will move on the pastures new before the new season gets underway.

A fresh update certainly suggests that that is the case, with Meslier seemingly closer than ever to heading out of the Leeds exit door this summer, with the club under new owners in the 49ers Enterprises.

What's the latest on Meslier future?

According to Football Insider, the Whites are "willing to listen to offers" for Meslier in the coming weeks, with the 23-year-old told by those at Elland Road that he is "free to leave", should his valuation be met.

The report goes on to add that "Leeds had previously hoped to secure a £40million-plus fee for Meslier, but his poor form in the final months of the 2022/23 season means that a bid of £30million could now seal a deal."

In truth, it would be a big surprise if Meslier was still a Leeds player come the opening game of the season at home to Cardiff City in August, with a move away now looking on the cards.

Ideally, the Whites would keep hold of him, given his long-term potential – Jack Harrison has hailed him as "talented" and "fantastic" – but it is understandable why he wouldn't want to be playing Championship football next season, with Leeds also looking to bring in some funds.

For that reason, Leeds should cash in on Meslier, with his current contract situation putting them in a strong bargaining position, allowing what should be a hefty amount of money to go toward new signings.

While the Frenchman's form was undoubtedly poor at times in 2022/23, it will still be a blow to lose one of the most gifted young players at the club, but the hope appears to be that the sale can end up benefiting the Whites in the long term.

Dunk's half-century keeps Strikers alive

A half-century from Ben Dunk took Adelaide Strikers to victory over his old team Hobart Hurricanes and kept their hopes alive in the BBL

A serene Ben Dunk half-century helped Adelaide Strikers to a comprehensive win over Hobart Hurricanes and kept them in finals contention.Dunk barely got out of first gear during an effortless 79 not out from 49 balls in sweltering conditions to control a run chase of 162 that wobbled momentarily. Brad Hodge was once again sublime in the middle overs but his dismissal was quickly followed by both Kieron Pollard’s and Jono Dean’s before Chris Jordan helped Dunk see Strikers home with 10 balls to spare. The target would have been far fewer if it wasn’t for a brilliant salvage job from the unheralded Hurricanes duo of Beau Webster and Jonathan Wells. They were brought together at 5 for 30 and produced fine half-centuries each to raise the total to defendable levels. But the damage done early by Jordan, Billy Stanlake and Travis Head with the ball proved too difficult to overcome.Trade wins
The off-season trade of Ben Dunk and Hamish Kingston raised a number of eyebrows and Dunk’s performance against his old side only added to the intrigue. He made just 31 in his first meeting against Hobart last Monday and D’Arcy Short, recruited as Dunk’s replacement, dominated in the Hurricanes’ successful chase.Dunk enjoyed the re-match, becoming the second-leading run-scorer in the BBL while Kingston and Short managed just four runs between them, not to mention leaking a combined 1 for 50 from five overs. Dunk was player of the tournament in the 2013 BBL and said post-match that he was probably playing better now than he did three seasons ago, when he was subsequently picked to play for Australia in three T20 internationals. The Adelaide Strikers fans have taken to Ben Dunk quite quickly•Cricket Australia

Webster’s record
Beau Webster had never batted in a BBL match prior to this game. The 23-year-old Tasmanian has three first-class centuries but had played just one T20 game, also against the Strikers, earlier this week, when he did not bat. On Friday, he walked out to bat with half the side back in the pavilion and one ball short of 14 overs still left.Webster finished unbeaten on 67 off 43 balls, the highest score by a No. 7 in BBL history. He played second fiddle during an 89-run stand with Wells, who played exceptionally well for his 55. Webster accelerated after Wells’ exit reaching 50 in just 36 balls. He showed admirable fitness, running twos late in the innings despite suffering in the stifling heat.Stanlake’s statement
Billy Stanlake has only played seven T20s but his stocks have risen with every outing. He bowled magnificently again picking up the crucial wickets of Kumar Sangakkara and Dan Christian in consecutive balls to leave Hurricanes reeling. The 22-year-old now has six wickets for the tournament at an average of 17.83 and economy rate of 6.97. His height and pace have troubled batsmen consistently and his captain Brad Hodge has backed him to play for Australia at some stage soon.

Leeds Could Secure "Monster" £10m Cooper Replacement

Leeds United may have just endured one of the tougher seasons in their recent history, but the 49ers' takeover of the club should offer a renewed sense of excitement for a fanbase that has relentlessly stuck by this lacklustre team.

Despite their presence in the forthcoming Championship campaign, this should still remain a season of hope, dreaming of promotion rather than the struggles and misery that their Premier League stint largely consisted of.

What it also means is that they will be able to spend with intelligence once again, given the exit of Victor Orta late last term.

With the interim sporting director Nick Hammond having already sought to focus on domestic markets, recent rumours seem to align with this trend.

Phil Hay detailed one such example earlier in the week, as he wrote of the Whites' interest in Liverpool defender Nat Phillips. Despite being without a manager, it is said that this deal, which could cost the club around £10m, is one that they will push for regardless of who is chosen to take charge.

Would Nat Phillips be a success at Leeds United?

Having only been promoted into the Reds' senior side due to their centre-back crisis in 2020, the 26-year-old defender has actually developed into quite a competent asset and starred on many occasions for Jurgen Klopp.

In fact, it was he who has led the praise for the academy graduate, noting in 2021: "In the air he's a monster but you could see it today, he's football-wise not bad, really good."

Across his 17 Premier League games that year, the Englishman maintained an impressive 7.19 average rating, upheld through his 84% pass accuracy and 4.8 clearances per game, via Sofascore.

Such outstanding form caught the eye of Scott Parker, who convinced the Merseyside club to let him join his AFC Bournemouth side on loan for the second half of the 2021/22 season.

There, he would once again prove his worth, helping the Cherries to secure promotion as his rating remained at 7.07.

As a defensive powerhouse with a focus on never shirking the hard work, it is hard not to draw comparisons between the 6 foot 3 goliath and Leeds' club captain Liam Cooper.

liam-cooper-leeds-united

However, as the Scotsman has grown older, his body has begun failing him more and more, meaning he seldom can offer that physical and technical superiority that made him such a fan favourite.

Injuries have meant that the 31-year-old could only manage 18 league appearances last term, with an average rating of 6.73 showcasing his downturn in form.

To replace his steely persona with an equally battle-hardened ace, who already has experience at this level and way beyond, Phillips could underpin the 49ers' new-look side for many years to come and repeat his feats of the past to help secure an instant promotion.
