Several IPL shareholders – players, coaches, franchise owners and administrators – have expressed reservations on various aspects of the rain-affected eliminator between Sunrisers and Knight Riders in Bengaluru, which finished at 1.27 am
ESPNcricinfo staff19-May-2017Several IPL stakeholders – players, coaches, franchise owners and administrators – have expressed reservations on various aspects of the rain-affected eliminator between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders in Bengaluru on Wednesday, which finished at 1.27 am the following day. While Stephen Fleming, coach of finalists Rising Pune Supergiant, has spoken strongly of the need to revamp the method of revising targets in T20 cricket, members of the Knight Riders management, including captain Gautam Gambhir and coach Jacques Kallis, have voiced concerns about the late finish. IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla, meanwhile, said the governing council will be looking into the the possibility of reserve days in future. After restricting Sunrisers to 128, Knight Riders had to wait over three hours while the rain poured down before they were set a revised target of 48 to chase in six overs via the Duckworth-Lewis method. They eventually got there comfortably, despite being reduced to 12 for 3 seven balls into the chase.Fleming said that while the D/L method was efficient in the 50-over format, it was heavily biased towards the chasing team in a T20 game. In a column in the , Fleming suggested “wicket pressure” – that is, reducing the wickets in hand along with the overs in shortened T20 – was the best way to even out the contest.”The D/L method is satisfactory for 100 overs, but in a 40-over game, it simply favours the team batting second too much,” Fleming said. “With low-scoring games on difficult pitches, whenever the overs are reduced, the team batting second will always have an edge because they stand a far lower chance of being bowled out, so they can stay a lot more relaxed.”In a situation like Wednesday night, even though there has been a small increase in runs required and there’s pressure on the team batting second owing to a reduction in the number of overs, they still have all wickets in hand which means they can play without risk. Even losing three wickets in approximately one over doesn’t really hamper them; they know they can just keep going because they have plenty of batting resources to fall back on.””The whole scenario just isn’t ideal and definitely needs a bit of tweaking. One of the ideas floating around is to introduce ‘wicket pressure’, so if you have a small chase, then you also have fewer wickets to play with. In effect, that means you only have five wickets, for example, for a six-over chase.”The IPL 2017 regulations state that if a knockout game is washed out, the team that finished higher in the league stage will be declared the winner. They also allow for a later cut-off time for play to begin in the playoffs than in the league games. On Wednesday, the six-over chase began just after 12.50 am. The regulations allow for a five-over innings to begin as late as 12.58 am, and a Super Over decider to begin at 1.20 am. But there is no reserve day, except for the final.Stephen Fleming: ‘The D/L method is satisfactory for 100 overs, but in a 40-over game, it simply favours the team batting second too much’•Getty Images
This is different from the rules in 2014, which had a provision for a reserve day for all playoff matches. The first qualifier between Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab went into the reserve day that season.Speaking of the possibility of a reserve day next season, Rajiv Shukla said, according to the : “The late-night finishes are a concern. Shah Rukh [Khan, the Knight Riders franchise co-owner] has tweeted about the option of a reserve day. We will weigh all options and the IPL governing council will look into it.”Gambhir, in his column in the , said: “I felt sorry for Sunrisers. I hope someone takes note of rain-affected matches and comes up with a plan B.” Kallis in his column in the said, “It was truly crazy to see the winning runs hit at 1.30 in the morning.” After the game on Wednesday, Knight Riders pace bowler Nathan Coulter-Nile had said, “You can’t be playing cricket at 2 am.”However, Gambhir also applauded the new drainage facilities at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium which allowed play to begin after all that rain. “Any other venue in India, with that amount of rain, it would have been game, set and match Sunrisers,” he said. This drainage and the logic of the cut-off times and rain rule might be put to the test once again on Friday night, when the IPL’s second qualifier – between Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians – will be played at the same venue, which has been hit by significant amounts of rainfall over the 48 hours leading up to the game.
If Rangers were to sell Romanian international Ianis Hagi this summer, "it would be quite a surprise", claims transfer insider Dean Jones.
Rangers transfer news – what's the latest on Ianis Hagi?
Rangers have been undergoing something of a squad overhaul in recent weeks, with the Teddybears seeing senior players like Scott Arfield, Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent all leaving the club and a swath of new faces arriving.
Rangers manager Michael Beale.
So far, the Glasgow giants have signed six new players this summer, splashing the cash on striker Cyriel Dessers, who cost £4.5m from Cremonese and fellow centre-forward Sam Lammers, who cost the club £3m from Atalanta.
With the club clearly spending big this summer and more potential incomings on the way, several players have been linked with moves away from Ibrox to help free up more capital to fund Michael Beale's overhaul, with one of those linked with a move being Hagi.
According to Football Insider, Serie A side Lecce view the player as a 'concrete target' this summer and have already made contact with the Scottish giants over a potential transfer.
Rangers legend Alan Hutton told the publication that while he hopes the player stays, he thinks the club could sell:
"There is definitely a question mark there. Hagi had a stop-start season with a serious injury that did not allow him to play as much football as he wanted, but you still think at this moment in time, he would be knocked down the pecking order, especially with the new signings.
"I would like to see him stay but if they did get a reasonable offer in they would listen to it. "
What has transfer insider Dean Jones said about Ianis Hagi and Rangers?
Jones was quick to point out that the departure of Hagi seems unlikely at this point, as everything around the club suggests he will be staying.
Speaking to Football FanCast, he said: "I mean, he seems unlikely (to leave), and actually, it would be quite a surprise at this point if he did go. I mean, the noises around it seem to suggest that they will be staying."
How good is Ianis Hagi?
It has been a tough few years for the Romanian international, having started his career at Ibrox brightly in the 2020/21 season to having it abruptly cut short the following season due to a knee injury.
That injury required surgery, which caused the dynamic midfielder to miss a whopping 69 games for the Gers across 371 days from January 21st 2022 to January 27th 2023.
Before his injury, however, he was electric north of the border, especially in that first season when he started 20 games, scored six goals, and assisted a further nine, picking up an average rating of 6.93.
It was this kind of form that led Gigi Becali, the owner of Steaua Bucharest, to make a very bold prediction:
"I think he will be a great European footballer in the future. For me, he will be worth €100m (£85m) in just two years."
His then-manager Steven Gerrard was also full of praise for the Romanian youngster, hailing him as "magic" after a spectacular Europa League goal at Ibrox in 2020.
With the now 24-year-old just getting back to his best after the tough journey he's been on over the last 18 months, Rangers should do all they can to find a place for him in the team going forward, even if he doesn't quite live up to that €100m (£85m) prediction.

The mother of South Africa coach Russell Domingo passed away overnight on Sunday following a car accident last month, shortly after Domingo had left the tour of England for a second time to return home.Domingo went home at the time of the incident – during the T20 series against England late last month – then traveled back to the UK during the tour-match in Worcester when his mother was discharged but he left again before the end of the first Test at Lord’s when her condition worsened again.Cricket South Africa confirmed her passing on Twitter. “Our deepest condolences go out to Russell Domingo and his family following the untimely passing of his mother late last night. #RIP.”CSA has not put a timeline on Domingo’s return and will allow the coach as much time as he needs with his family. It is likely he will not return for the start of the second Test at Trent Bridge on Friday.Earlier this week, Domingo confirmed he had reapplied for his post as South Africa’s head coach following weeks of uncertainty over whether he wanted to continue in the role. Domingo was interviewed by the five-man panel appointed to recommend a candidate for the coaching position to CSA’s board, which includes former national coaches Gary Kirsten and Eric Simons. The committee will meet with CSA’s board on July 21 and a decision on the new coach will be made shortly thereafter.South Africa’s backroom staff includes assistant coach Adrian Birrell, batting consultant Neil McKenzie, bowling coach Charl Langeveldt and spin bowling consultant Claude Henderson. The team will travel to Nottingham to prepare for the second Test on Tuesday.
Glasgow Rangers have agreed on a fee with Feyenoord for striker and long-term target Danilo, Sky Sports report.
Are Rangers signing Danilo?
A number of new players have been signed by Michael Beale ahead of his first full season in charge of the club, and it looks as if Danilo could be the next through the door.
Jack Butland, Leon Balogun, Kieran Dowell and Dujon Sterling have all made the move to Glasgow on free transfers.
Meanwhile, money has been spent on attackers Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers, whereas Brighton forward Abdallah Sima has arrived on a season-long loan.
Despite three new additions in the final third the club have lost three attackers from last season in Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Kent and Antonio Colak, with Rangers receiving money for the latter after he signed for Parma.
Danilo has been a key target in Glasgow, with Beale personally thought to be an admirer of the forward. An opening offer was turned down by the Eredivisie side, who have been wanting more than £5m for the striker, and it looks as if they will get their wish after a new bid was submitted, with all parties involved on course to get what they want.
Sky Sports shared an update out of Ibrox regarding their pursuit of Danilo on Tuesday. They stated that there has been a breakthrough, with an agreement reached between the two clubs which could be worth a total of £6m.
“Some breaking news from Rangers. They’ve had a deal worth £6m accepted by Feyenoord for striker Danilo. The 24-year-old scored 12 times last season and has been the subject of several offers.
“The initial fee being £5.2m before potential add-ons. Personal terms not expected to be a problem, the Brazilian is keen on a move to Ibrox.”
Further reports have claimed that the forward is poised to travel to Scotland early next week to finalise a transfer by undergoing a medical and signing the relative paperwork, with a five-year deal on the cards.
Who is Danilo?
Danilo actually the same agency as Rangers players Connor Goldson, Fashion Sakala, John Lundstram and Rabbi Matondo, so now a fee has been agreed, you’d like to think a move will go smoothly.
The 24-year-old appears to be at the peak of his powers with a career-high €6.5m Transfermarkt valuation and joined Feyenoord on a free transfer last year. Since then, the forward has found the back of the net on 14 occasions in 48 appearances, helping the club to the Dutch top-flight title in the process.
Prior to his stint with his current employers, Danilo was on the books with Ajax and enjoyed a productive loan spell with FC Twente, scoring 17 Eredivisie goals in 33 appearances during the 2020/21 season.
In total, Danilo has scored 87 goals in 175 appearances at youth and senior level, but with a first taste of senior football outside the Netherlands on the cards, it will be interesting to see if he can find the back of the net regularly in Scotland.
Chelsea are fairly ramping up their efforts in the transfer window as Mauricio Pochettino looks set to further bolster his squad with the acquisition of AS Monaco defender Axel Disasi.
With Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson already arriving in London, it appears as though the Blues are now strengthening their defence ahead of the new campaign.
Have Chelsea signed Axel Disasi?
According to Fabrizio Romano, a deal is 'done' to sign Disasi from the Ligue 1 side.
The Athletic believe the fee to be around €45m (£38m) and it represents the second transfer window in a row that Chelsea have signed a defender from Monaco, having signed Benoit Badiashile in January.
Romano has since also stated that the player will fly in for a medical which is booked for Monday.

With Wesley Fofana out injured for the foreseeable future, Pochettino reiterated the need for another defender, saying: “Fofana is injured, so it’s obvious that maybe we need to reinforce this area. It’s clear.”
Could Axel Disasi improve Chelsea?
Pochettino was charged with trimming the Chelsea squad during the transfer window and with 13 players already departing, it’s certainly a good start, giving him the funds to sign a few new players.
He will be looking to give some of the players signed last season a new lease of life, with Enzo Fernandez being one, especially considering he has the talent to become one of the finest midfielders in the league.
The 22-year-old has showcased his abilities on the big stage across the previous 365 days and compared to positional peers, he ranks in the top 3% for progressive passes per 90 (9.25) and in the top 1% for passes into the final third per 90 (9.09), suggesting he provides a reliable attacking outlet from the base of the midfield, trying to get the ball into dangerous positions often.
With the arrival of Disasi, Pochettino could perhaps make his compatriot unplayable by having a progressive centre-back playing just behind him and making the transition from defence to attack that much easier.
The Frenchman is certainly a more fluid option to have in the defence considering his penchant for starting attacks wherever possible. Compared to positional peers, the 25-year-old ranks in the top 4% for progressive carries (1.7) and progressive passes (5.8) per 90, while also ranking in the top 7% for successful take-ons per 90 (0.57).
This clearly indicates that the defender aims to move the ball forward at any given opportunity while not being afraid to take on opposition players and this could give Fernandez some added freedom in the centre of the midfield.
The “complete & dominant” Frenchman – as hailed by talent scout Jacek Kulig – also made 1.5 interceptions and 2.9 clearances per game for Monaco in Ligue 1 last term, which would have seen him rank joint-second and fourth respectively in the Chelsea squad.
This proves that his defensive ability is also solid, despite preferring a more advanced approach to the position.
There is no doubt he would be a wonderful signing and as mentioned previously, Fernandez could become unplayable next season with the four-cap titan linking up with him on a regular basis.

Clint McKay returned the best ever figures by a Leicestershire bowler in domestic T20 as they secured a five-wicket win over Worcestershire Rapids at New Road. The Australian finished with 5-11 from his four overs, surpassing the 5-13 by Andrew McDonald versus Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 2010. It was also McKay’s personal best in the short format of the game as the Rapids were restricted to 148 for 8.McKay said: “The funny thing about it is I’ve actually been feeling quite sick all day so I wasn’t particularly looking forward to playing tonight. But it was the same as usual, the same preparation, and I try and bowl the best ball everytime. Tonight I was very lucky and other days you bowl nicely and it doesn’t quite work out for you.”Colin Ackerman’s unbeaten 47 off 36 balls then enabled Leicestershire to overcome a mid-innings wobble as they reached their target with nine balls to spare.Leicestershire have now triumphed in their opening two games in a competition they have won three times whilst the Rapids have slumped to back-to-back defeats – both at New Road.Worcestershire opted to bat first on the same pitch as used for the previous T20 Blast game against Birmingham Bears but lost two wickets inside the opening two overs from McKay. Joe Clarke, who was again promoted to open, attempted a cut and was caught at first slip and then Brett D’Oliveira nicked through to keeper Luke Ronchi.Ben Cox, who hit a career best 124 in the County Championship match with Gloucestershire at Cheltenham this week, again looked in good form and struck three fours and a six in Gavin Griffiths second over. Cox and Daryl Mitchell added 56 in seven overs and in the process the latter became Worcestershire’s highest ever run-scorer in T20 cricket, surpassing the 1,890 total of Moeen Ali.But on 31, Mitchell swept Cameron Delport into the hands of short fine leg and skipper Joe Leach failed to trouble the scorers before being yorked by Griffiths.Cox went to his half century off 35 balls with five fours and a six but lofted the next delivery from Callum Parkinson straight to long-on.McKay returned to the firing line and struck twice in two balls with Ross Whiteley holing out to long off and Mitchell Santner pouched on the midwicket boundary. The 34-year-old completed his haul in the final over as Ed Barnard also fell in the deep. When Leicestershire replied, New Zealand keeper Ronchi showed immediate aggressive intent as he struck the first three deliveries of the innings from Leach for boundaries. Australian allrounder John Hastings suffered the same treatment in his first over, this time from Delport.Black Caps spinner Santner broke the stand on 41 by bowling Delport and the first ball from Mitchell accounted for Ronchi in the same manner at 61 for 2 in the seventh over.D’Oliveira’s introduction into the attack bore instant reward with Foxes skipper Mark Cosgrove and Ned Eckersley falling at long-on and cover respectively. There was still work to do for the visitors when Lewis Hill was stumped to give Santner a second success and 40 were required from the final five overs. But Ackerman and Tom Wells (31 not out) ensured there were no more alarms for Leicestershire.
Leeds United are looking for some last-minute reinforcements to bolster their squad ahead of their Championship return, and now a new update has emerged on a potential transfer target.
What's the latest on Leeds' interest in Brandon Williams?
According to The Independent's chief football writer Miguel Delaney, Leeds are now considering a move for Manchester United full-back Brandon Williams.
As per the report, the reliable journalist has revealed that Daniel Farke is keen to add more new additions to boost the chances of promotion back to the Premier League and is now interested in reuniting with Williams, having worked with him at Norwich City during the 2021/22 campaign.
Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…
The Red Devils, meanwhile, are keen to bolster their transfer funds to complete further improvements to their team ahead of next season, and Williams is one of the players they are willing to offload on a permanent basis, preferring not to sanction loan moves.
How good is Brandon Williams?
There is no doubt that Leeds are in desperate need of new additions following the exit of many of their Premier League players over the summer so far.
In terms of their defensive presence, the West Yorkshire outfit has seen Robin Koch, Maximilian Wober, Rasmus Kristensen and Marc Roca depart, with Junior Firpo's future also hanging in the balance at present.
Italian journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano revealed in June that the 26-year-old left-back was attracting interest from "several European clubs" and more recently, it has been confirmed that Leeds are keen to part ways with the player following a difficult season.
As a result, the signing of Williams would be warmly welcomed at Elland Road this summer, as he could be an ideal replacement for Firpo, and potentially an improvement in the role if he could continue his promising development under the Leeds boss.
Farke is no stranger to the Carrington academy graduate after briefly working with him at Norwich, so will have a good understanding of the full-back's strengths, whilst Williams will have experience of the German coach's style of play and expectations of him on the pitch.
brandon-williams-championship-leeds-transfers
The £65k-per-week talent has found it difficult to earn regular first-team football at Old Trafford due to an injury and high-quality competitors occupying his preferred position, something that could make a move to Yorkshire an attractive prospect for the 22-year-old.
Over 26 Premier League appearances in the 2021/22 season for Norwich, Williams completed an 82% pass completion rate, won 56% of his ground and aerial duels combined, as well as successfully completing 51% of his dribbles too, according to SofaScore.
Despite falling completely out of favour for United and not featuring once under Erik ten Hag in the top-flight last season, Williams has been the recipient of high praise over his short career so far, with former Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer branding him as "perfect" in the past.
With that being said, if Farke could secure a deal for Williams this summer it would add some great depth to the left full-back role and could give Williams the opportunity to finally earn regular first-team football, which could pay off massively if he plays with a point to prove his worth.
As such, his arrival could also help seal a departure for Marcelo Bielsa flop, Firpo, as it's clear that he is no longer wanted at Elland Road, given the aforementioned reports and the mooted interest in the Red Devils youngster.
