Watson's 90* propels Quetta to second place

After conceding 180, Karachi put up a listless batting performance to go down by 67 runs – the heaviest margin of defeat in PSL history

The Report by Danyal Rasool08-Mar-2018

PCB/PSL

In a nutshellQuetta Gladiators turned in a performance that would have been well-suited to their form in the first two seasons, crushing Karachi Kings by 67 runs. Riding the high from Wednesday’s pulsating finish, they played their best match of this year’s tournament by far, dominating Karachi from the first ball to last. They amassed 180, thanks to major contributions from their two biggest stars. Shane Watson scored an unbeaten 58-ball 90, while Kevin Pietersen belted 52 off 34 balls to subdue a Karachi bowling attack that had more weak links than an Anne Robinson game show. Afridi and Imad Wasim were off colour, while Imran Khan and David Wiese bore the brunt of the punishment Pietersen and Watson dished out. By the end of the innings, it seemed a small win for Karachi that Sarfraz Ahmed’s men didn’t get closer to 200.Karachi experimented by sending Afridi to open the batting with Joe Denly, in the process reminding everyone why he hasn’t been opening the batting for the last decade or so. He looked particularly wobbly, and was dismissed for 1 off 5 balls. The rest of the Karachi top order was no better, as Mohammad Nawaz bossed proceedings in the first Powerplay with an excellent spell. By 10 overs, Karachi were 55 for 5, and the game was already over, with both sides going through the motions for the last hour or so. Before long, Quetta had clinched a big win, boosting their net run rate and sending a message to the rest of the league.Where the match was wonOpening with Afridi, Karachi would have hoped to get off to an aggressive start in the Powerplay, and keep in touch with the asking rate. It’s safe to say that idea didn’t work, but it’s worth looking at the scale of the disaster in the early overs. Four of their top five batsmen fell for a combined six runs, with Denly, Afridi, Ingram and Bopara scoring 1, 1, 5 and 0 respectively. Nawaz, Rahat Ali and Hasan Khan were without blemish early on, all of them taking wickets and not conceding runs. That was in marked contrast to Quetta’s top order, which, thanks to Watson and Pietersen, had taken the game away from Wasim’s men before the second innings had even begun. The men that won itThursday was a good day to shut up everyone who wrote Quetta off this year due to their lack of star power. With a lineup including two of the biggest names of this generation, it was only a matter of time before someone found themselves on the wrong end of a Quetta hammering. In the twilight of their careers, Pietersen and Watson tore into Karachi with an enthralling partnership, walloping 86 runs in 58 balls. Crucially, that was in the middle overs, a time when most teams’ scoring rates go down. That meant Quetta’s innings never really decelerated, resulting in an imposing total. Watson even returned for a stellar bowling spell, conceding 18 runs in three overs and taking the wicket of Babar Azam. The (big) numbers gameWatson’s unbeaten 90 superseded Sohaib Maqsood’s 85 that until today had been the highest individual score in PSL 3. Moreover, Quetta’s 67-run win is the biggest in terms of runs in the history of the league. At one stage, Quetta looked like they were on course to beat Multan Sultans’ 183 and claim the highest team total this year too, before a late part-rally by Karachi’s bowlers deprived them of that record.Where they standQuetta surge to second in the table after Thursday’s big win, their eight points behind only Multan Sultan, who have nine. Karachi, with seven points, drop down to fourth.

Tottenham: Ange calls upon "quality" barely-seen Spurs gem before Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has called up a barely-seen young player to first-team training ahead of their clash with Arsenal.

Arsenal vs Tottenham

The north Londoners are set for a very interesting battle on Sunday with both sides heading into the 90 on a fierce fun of form. Spurs and Arsenal have won four out of their opening five Premier League matches so far; remaining unbeaten while sending a real statement to the rest of this division.

Postecolgou's side, over their last four games, have reigned victorious in each of them. Wins over Bournemouth, Man United, Burnley and Sheffield United in that order have showcased both an exciting new style and the mentality of champions.

Spurs were forced to dig deep for their latest three points, with Sheffield United giving them a real scare last Saturday. Gustavo Hamer's opener was later cancelled out by two last gasp strikes from Richarlison and Dejan Kukusevski deep into added time. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was sent into raptures and Postecoglou has said that the Spurs fan base should enjoy every second of this imperious run.

"No, no, no, let them go, let them go and enjoy it," said Postecoglou after their victory over the Blades. "My role is not to burst people's bubbles. Let them get excited, let them get ahead of themselves. That's the beauty of being a supporter.

"They go through enough pain mate, you want to let them enjoy it. If they think we're going to be world beaters then great, that's up to us to match that expectation. Our supporters deserve to have some happiness and enjoy it any way they want to."

Meanwhile, Arsenal have notched league victories over Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Man United and Everton – with their only dropped points coming in a 2-2 draw to Fulham last month. The Gunners have been forced to dig deep in a fair few of those games, especially wins against the likes of Forest, Palace and Everton.

They were all secured by narrow one-goal margins with Arteta hailing his side's quality and belief in their last domestic outing at Goodison Park.

“Six years without a win here is a long time, so we had to learn some lessons, we had to be better." said Arteta. "I am delighted for the win but especially the way we won it, the way we played, how dominant we were, the presence that we showed on the pitch. We fully deserved to win the game.

“I think we had many other openings to put the ball in the last line and to put somebody in the box and finalise. Credit to Everton, they defended the box extremely well, and they had some big, big blocks when we opened them up. It’s great to have other ways to score goals, it gives you different resources and be more unpredictable."

Latest Tottenham news

It will be interesting to see who features on Sunday, with a video from Tottenham's YouTube channel (via The Boot Room) sharing that young defender Nile John has actually been called up to senior training ahead of the encounter.

John has made just one first-team appearance for the club so far, having been on loan spells at the likes of Charlton Athletic. He has been revered for his "quality" in recent seasons by members of the media, and it will be interesting to see if the 20-year-old can do enough to earn a spot for Postecoglou over this campaign.

Liverpool reportedly keen on signing "incredible" Premier League star

Liverpool are keen on signing an "incredible" midfielder in the January transfer window, even though he is set to sign a new contract with his club, according to a recent report.

What's the latest Liverpool transfer news?

The Reds have recently been handed a boost in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund forward Youssoufa Moukoko, with it emerging the German club are open to selling him in the January transfer window, but they will face competition from Chelsea. Moukoko is not Jurgen Klopp's only attacking target, as the manager continues to run the rule over potential replacements for Mohamed Salah, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that clubs from Saudi Arabia are set to return for the Egyptian in 2024.

Romano adds that West Ham United's Jarrod Bowen is being considered as a long-term replacement for the Liverpool legend, and there have now been reports they could also be interested in a central midfielder, despite signing four in the summer.

One player the Reds missed out on in the summer is Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes, having opened talks at the very beginning of the transfer window, but they have not given up on their pursuit. Despite the fact that Guimaraes is set to sign a new contract to extend his stay at St. James' Park, reports from Spain have now detailed that Liverpool "continue to maintain" their interest, as he is valued highly by Klopp (via Sport Witness).

In the summer, the Merseysiders were willing to offer over £100m for the Brazilian, but they were met with a "resounding no" from Newcastle, who had no interest in selling, indicating his price tag could be some way over that figure. The midfielder's current deal is set to expire in 2026, but he is reportedly likely to agree an extension until 2028, so it appears as though he is happy at Newcastle for the time being.

However, the Reds believe he would be a "valuable addition" to their squad, and it remains to be seen whether he is tempted by a move if an official bid is made in the next window.

How good is Bruno Guimaraes?

In his first full season on Tyneside, the 25-year-old was one of Newcastle's best-performing players in the Premier League, averaging a Sofascore match rating of 7.17 across the season, the third-highest figure in the squad.

However, it seems very unlikely the Magpies would consider a sale, with Eddie Howe previously quashing rumours the Brazil international could be sold to Real Madrid, saying: "Absolutely not. We're trying to build a squad to make the club successful over the next few years. We want to enhance the group, not take away our best players. He has been incredible."

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

The Newcastle star has been an indispensable member of the first team so far this season, starting all six Premier League games, and the club will be in an even stronger negotiating position if he pens a new deal. Although Guimaraes is a talented player, we do not feel Liverpool cannot justify an outlay of over £100m on him this January, especially considering they rebuilt their midfield in the summer.

Raza, Liton Das and Unmukt shine on day of batsmen

Dhanmondi topple table-toppers Abahani, while Rupganj and Gazi Group pick up comfortable victories

In his first game after the gates closed on Zimbabwe’s entry into the World Cup following a heartbreaking loss to UAE, Sikandar Raza’s breezy 90 helped Gazi Group Cricketers to a 34-run win over Kheleghar Samaj Kallyan Samity in the Dhaka Premier League’s Super League.Raza struck seven fours and four sixes in his 84-ball innings that powered Gazi Group to 304 for 6 in 50 overs. Raza built on a solid platform of 108 for 2 in the 21st over, laid by Imrul Kayes (63) and Mominul Haque (47). He put on 55 with Asif Ahmed for the fourth wicket and then added another 71 runs with Nadif Chowdhury, before falling in the 47th over. Nadif struck three sixes and a four in his 35-ball 45.In reply, Khelaghar openers Robiul Islam and Mahidul Islam put together 108 runs for the opening stand. Both batsmen were dismissed in the 60s, but the middle-order couldn’t build on the good work. That meant Mausam Khan’s 44 off 41 balls at No. 7 went in vain as Khelaghar still fell well short. Abu Hider took three wickets, while Mahedi Hasan got two.Unmukt Chand’s second successive hundred helped Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club beat table-toppers Abahani Limited by 26 runs at the Fatullah Cricket Stadium.Batting first, Dhanmondi Club reached 256 for 8 in 50 overs, with Chand top-scoring with 101 off 138 balls that included eight fours and three sixes. He shared a 90-run opening stand with Shykat Ali, and an 81-run third wicket stand with Tanbir Hayder, before Dhanmondi went on to lose six wickets for 81 runs.Mashrafe Mortaza, who had just taken three wickets, then went out to open the batting for the first time in his List-A career. But he had a short stay, as did many of the other top and middle-order batsmen. The lower order fared much better with solid contributions but Abahani were limited to 230 nonetheless. Abu Jayed and Robiul Haque took three wickets each.Mohammad Naim’s stroke-filled 88 took Legends of Rupganj to a five-wicket win over Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.Batting first, Doleshwar reached 257 for 5 in 50 overs on the back of Liton Das’ third century in the tournament. He struck nine fours and two sixes in his 126-ball knock. After putting on 69 runs for the first wicket with Imtiaz Hossain, Liton put together a 113-run second wicket stand with Fazle Mahmud (46). Prime Doleshwar lost four wickets in the last 10 overs, but quick bursts from Iqbal Abdulla (42* off 22) and Farhad Reza (29 off 22) ensured it didn’t hurt the finish.Chasing 258 to win, Naim and Abdul Mazid started very well with a 140-run opening stand. Naim struck six fours and five sixes in his 101-ball knock. Mazid was a lot more sedate, collecting 58 off 90 balls. After their dismissals, Mushfiqur Rahim (41) and Naeem Islam (31) took Rupganj closer before they won with eight balls to spare.

A pandemia atrasou nossos planos – alertou Rose.

Spurs: Postecoglou has now finally replaced Pochettino’s ‘hero’ at N17

Tottenham Hotspur maintained their unbeaten start to the new Premier League campaign with a commendable 2-2 draw away to rivals Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, with Ange Postecoglou's side twice coming from behind to secure a point at the Emirates.

In years gone by, the Lilywhites may have wilted in such a high-profile contest – particularly with Cristian Romero netting an own goal and giving away a penalty – yet this new crop of talent appears to be made of sterner stuff, despite the free-flowing football that Postecoglou has been keen to introduce.

That battling nature was perhaps typified best by midfield maestro, Yves Bissouma, with the former Brighton and Hove Albion man looking back to his best after enduring an injury-hit debut campaign last time out.

Like a cliched 'new signing' this time around, the Mali international was truly immense against the Gunners, illustrating his bravery both in and out of possession after having won seven of his ten total duels on the day, while also enjoying a remarkable 95% pass accuracy rate – the highest of any player for either side.

After largely being on the periphery in 2022/23, Bissouma looks likely to be central to the north Londoners moving forward, with his return to the side seemingly one of the key differences from last season's dismal campaign.

Another alteration that has been made since Postecoglou's arrival has been at left-back, with the emergence of young Destiny Udogie – who was also impressive at the weekend – also something to savour.

How did Udogie perform against Arsenal?

It had initially looked like being a tough afternoon for the promising Italian in what was arguably his biggest test since his belated arrival at Spurs over the summer, after spending last season back on loan at Serie A side, Udinese.

Faced with one of the league's in-form wingers in Bukayo Saka – who reached double figures for both goals and assists in the top-flight last term – the 20-year-old could have been mistaken for a rabbit in the headlights initially, notably picking up an early yellow card to make life even more difficult.

The full-back also then proceeded to tee up Eddie Nketiah with an errant back pass, with Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville stating in commentary at the time that it was "all getting a bit too much" for the defender, as he was under "real pressure against Saka".

Destiny Udogie

To his credit, while many managers would have looked to the experienced figure of Ben Davies at half-time – or even sooner – Postecoglou kept faith with the Verona native, with the 58-year-old even exclaiming at full-time that he believed that Udogie was "the dominant player on that side of the pitch" in the end.

In truth, Udogie seemingly warranted an apology or praise from Neville for the manner in which he fought back after the break, ultimately finishing the match having made eight tackles as a marker of his persistence.

Such a turnaround in fortunes against Mikel Arteta's men was a 'credit to his maturity' – as per football.london's Alasdair Gold – with it having been yet another reminder of just how good young Udogie is.

How good is Destiny Udogie?

As footballJOE's Hunter Godson stated earlier this season, the 6 foot 2 starlet could get "into every team in the world already" as he is "sickeningly good", having already registered two assists in just six league outings so far this term.

The £15m addition – who contributed 15 goals and assists in 71 games for his former employers – had primarily been deployed in a wing-back berth prior to this season, yet has settled in smoothly into Postecoglou's ranks.

In truth, the Italy U21 international appears to have finally solved what has been a problem position for those at N17 in recent years, with Daniel Levy and co having arguably not replaced former "hero" Danny Rose until now – as hailed by writer Ryan Rosenblatt.

How many appearances did Danny Rose make for Spurs?

Signed from Leeds United on a £1m deal back in 2007, the diminutive defender went on to become a mainstay at White Hart Lane over the next decade or so, making himself an instant cult figure among supporters following his stunning effort on debut against the Gunners.

While the next few years would be littered with loan spells, the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino seemingly changed his fortunes, with the Doncaster-born ace forming part of a famed backline including the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Kyle Walker – as well as subsequently, Kieran Trippier.

At his pomp, the left-back was even mooted for a £50m switch to Manchester United as an indication of how highly-regarded he was in the game, having also been part of the Spurs side that reached the Champions League final under Pochettino in 2019.

Although that stellar spell came to a sour end as Rose was frozen out by Jose Mourinho – before joining Watford in 2021 – he was still able to rack up 213 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring nine goals and contributing 29 assists.

danny-rose-tottenham-hotspur-leeds-united-wise-flop-transfer

Since that acrimonious exit, there has arguably not been a nailed-on, first-choice option to replace the 33-year-old, with the full-back berths, in general, having not been taken up by two "dynamic" options "since Walker and Rose" – as per 90min's Sean Walsh.

Has Danny Rose been replaced at Tottenham?

The Lilywhites did snap up Sergio Reguilon back in the summer of 2020 in order to acquire a long-term successor to Rose – who is now without a club – yet the current Man United loanee has hardly set the world alight since then, with Spurs insider John Wenham describing him as "just not that good" last year.

Equally, one-time wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon – who had previously been likened to Gareth Bale – has also failed to nail down that starting berth due to his continued injury woes, having even been described as "a Championship player" by Wenham.

The shift to a back three or back five under Antonio Conte did see the aforementioned Davies slot in on the left flank, although the Welshman is a solid, albeit unspectacular performer at best, with pundit Gabby Agbonlahor suggesting back in May that the club should replace the 30-year-old as he is "struggling to put in top performances".

With Udogie in tow, however, a proper replacement for Rose appears to have been found, with the hope being that the youngster can also enjoy a lengthy, fruitful stint at N17, much like the Englishman before him.

Although supporters won't want to get carried away just yet, it looks as if the golden days of Pochettino could be set to return under the seemingly infallible, Postecoglou.
