Siraj hands India A the advantage despite Second's 94

Seven of South Africa A’s eight wickets were pouched by the wicketkeeper or the slip cordon, on a day when India A’s pacers dominated at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru

The Report by Deivarayan Muthu in Bengaluru04-Aug-2018

While India were locked in a riveting contest with England at Edgbaston, fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Navdeep Saini made inroads for the A team against South Africa A in a less-intense setting at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The two quicks swung the new ball and later Rajneesh Gurbani seemingly reversed the old one, but the South African batsmen kept stabbing at wide deliveries and continued nicking behind. Seven of the eight batsmen who were dismissed on day one were either caught by wicketkeeper Srikar Bharat or pouched in the slips. However, Knights’ wicketkeeper-batsman Rudi Second, who has been a prolific scorer in the Sunfoil domestic competition, repaired the innings with a sprightly 94 off 139 balls and hauled his team from 93 for 4 to 246 for 8 at stumps.Unlike his team-mates, Second largely played close to his body and when he shaped to drive, he ensured his front foot met the pitch of the ball. He was compact against spin too, often stretching forward to smother whatever little turn Yuzvendra Chahal extracted from the day-one pitch. Fifteen minutes before the close of play, though, Second himself threw his bat at a Siraj offering that finished possibly wider than a set of stumps outside off and handed Bharat his fourth catch.Siraj’s wickets, however, weren’t as eye-catching as the inswinger that stormed through the defences of Alastair Cook in Worcester. “Getting a world-class batsman like Cook gave me the confidence that I would dismiss any batsman,” Siraj said after play. “My plan there was to just keep bowling dot balls and make the batsman commit a mistake. Even today there was movement with the new ball and I just wanted to bowl in the right areas.”As for Chahal, who was playing his first red-ball match since the Ranji quarter-final against Jharkhand in 2016, he showed signs of rust in the first two sessions before settling down after tea. In his second over, he bowled a knee-high full-toss to Sarel Erwee and watched the ball disappear into the midwicket boundary, where his coach Rahul Dravid was overseeing the action. He then bowled two front-foot no-balls, the second of which was cracked to the extra-cover boundary by Second. Chahal, ultimately, got the breakthrough in the 72nd over when a sharp legbreak duped Shaun von Berg. Axar Patel, the second spinner, who was picked ahead of Jayant Yadav, barely found turn and toiled for figures of 17-3-35-0. He was the only Indian bowler who did not take a wicket.Siraj, however, was the standout bowler for India A. He had been the pick of the bowlers in the four-dayers in England as well, bagging 15 wickets against West Indies A and England Lions, and moved up the pecking order further with his 3 for 56 on Saturday. He made his first incision when he moved the ball off the seam and drew the outside edge of opener Pieter Malan in the fifth over. In his next over, he removed Zubayr Hamza in similar fashion for a duck. Siraj later returned with the second new ball to nip out Second.Saini had also generated seam movement and was rewarded with the wickets of captain Khaya Zondo and allrounder Senuran Muthusamy. Both were jittery throughout, flashing the ball over the cordon or the infield before their edges were also snaffled. Muthusamy faced 17 dots before getting off the mark with a top-edged boundary that sailed over long leg. He then hung on for a 59-run stand – the highest of the innings – with Second.Second rallied the middle and lower order after Erwee had scored 47 around the top-order wobble. Second was particularly strong through the off side, driving Gurbani off either foot through extra cover. He also laced Axar in front of square and dared to foray down the track against Chahal, proceeding to his 29th first-class fifty off 71 balls. Moments later, he was reprieved on 60 when Hanuma Vihari shelled a low catch. Second added 34 runs to his tally before being the last man to be dismissed on day one.Meanwhile, Gurbani, who played only the four-dayer against West Indies A in Taunton, gave a good account of himself by venturing wide of the crease and nipping the ball against the angle from over the wicket. He claimed the only non-caught behind wicket when he pinned Dane Piedt in front for 5 in the 79th over.

Rangers player suffers new mystery injury as update emerges from Ibrox

Four wins from five and their place confirmed in the Scottish Cup final, it's fair to say that Rangers have got off to a good start under new boss Philippe Clement. The former AS Monaco man has breathed new life into the Scottish Premiership giants, who may yet have a say in Celtic's pursuit of a third consecutive title and a first since the return of Brendan Rodgers.

With games coming thick and fast, Clement will simply be hoping to see the Gers continue their fine form and unbeaten run for as long as possible. That may prove more difficult, however, after recent injury news emerged to deal the new manager a frustrating blow.

Rangers injury news

Clement has already had to deal with several Rangers injuries during the early days of his tenure. The Belgian has been without John Souttar, Borna Barisic, Dujon Sterling, Nicolas Raskin and Rabbi Matondo at various stages in what has been a difficult few weeks when it comes to finding consistent options. Those absences make Clement's start all the more impressive, however, and beg the question as to just how good the Gers will be when the new manager has a full squad available.

The answer to that question looks unlikely to come anytime soon, though, with Clement confirming more Rangers injury news. The manager said, via Four Lads Had a Dream: “Ahead of Prague, You want to build from game to game, you want to give players a chance but we miss a few from the European squad. One player is unavailable but I will not tell you who. Minor [injury] but may not make it Thursday or Sunday.”

With that said, only time will tell just who it is that Rangers will be missing for their next Europa League clash, as Clement continues to remain coy over his squad's availability.

Rangers team news vs Sparta Prague

Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack.

With the chance to potentially move top of Group C with a win over Sparta Prague, Clement must get his Rangers selection right from the players that he has at his disposal. The new boss has already faced the Czech Republic side in charge of the Gers, of course, when they held them to a 0-0 draw in Prague in just his second game in charge. Now on four points, two points adrift of group leaders Real Betis, Rangers have the chance to lay down a marker halfway through the group stage.

Having eased past Hearts to progress into the final of the Scottish League Cup last time out, the likes of Danilo and Ryan Jack could keep their starting place, whilst Cyriel Dessers may well get an opportunity to feature at some stage.

If the Scottish giants can go one better than their previous away day by defeating Sparta Prague, then it will show just how much they've improved in such little time since the arrival of Clement. Even without what is currently an unknown injury, the Gers have the opportunity to make it six games without defeat under their new boss.

Mike's lively debut brings trouble for Sussex

Ben Mike showed up well on his Leicestershire debut before Sussex rallied late in the day

ScorecardA seventh wicket stand of 110 in 25 overs between Ben Brown and Chris Jordan rescued the day for promotion-chasing Sussex against Leicestershire at Hove.Until then Sussex had not made the most of a strong position with a number of batsmen getting out when well set against a depleted but spirited Leicestershire attack.Sussex had made a positive start after winning the toss. Their new-look opening partnership of Phil Salt and Tom Haines put on 79 for the first wicket at virtually four an over. After a disappointing defeat on a difficult pitch at Lord’s, third-placed Sussex picked an unchanged side, but pushed regular opener Luke Wells down to No 3.Talking T20

Salt scored a typically expeditious 44 from 60 balls, with eight fours, before he was well caught and bowled by Ben Mike, low down to his right. Mike is making his first-class debut and impressed with his action and pace bowling downhill from the Cromwell Road end. He finished with 3 for 57. Dieter Klein is playing his fourth championship match of the season but is still waiting for his first wicket.Leicestershire, whose own promotion bid has fallen away after defeats by Kent and Gloucestershire, were fielding a weakened attack without the injured Gavin Griffiths and Zak Chappell.Haines reached his fifty when he guided Mohammad Abbas to the third man boundary for his tenth and final four. On 56 he was caught in the same area as he attempted a square drive. Sussex were 126 for 2 in the 37th over.Wells looked as if he had been batting at No 3 all his life. He went down the pitch to drive spinner Callum Parkinson back over his head for a flat six. But Leicestershire hit back at 140 when Harry Finch was lbw to Raine for four.Wells reached his fifty from 96 balls, with four fours and a six. But he was fourth out at 188 when he pushed forward to Neil Dexter and was caught behind.Luke Wright, with some forceful drives, looked keen to make up for his pair in his last outing – a failure that, oddly, caused one disgruntled Sussex member to lambast him on social media for eating an egg and bacon bap on the Lord’s balcony before start of play. There were four fours in Wright’s pugnacious 27 but then he was bowled attempting to pull a ball that kept low. When David Wiese was well caught in the gully for a second ball duck Sussex were 204 for 6 and had not made the most of their early advantage. But then captain Brown (60) and Jordan (52 not out) came together to provide the most resolute batting of the innings. Brown has been his side’s most dependable batsman this season, although he had to survive a prolonged appeal for a slip catch by Mark Cosgrove after reaching his half-century.

FICOU NO ZERO

Os esforços dos dois lados pareceram mais eficiente no segundo do que no primeiro tempo, porém nada suficiente para balançar as redes na cidade de Maceió que viu o seu grande clássico terminar zerado.

Todd Cantwell binned in Rangers’ predicted lineup vs Sparta

Glasgow Rangers return to Europa League action on Thursday night as they take on Sparta Prague in the fourth match of the group stage phase.

The Light Blues are unbeaten in Philippe Clement's first five competitive games in charge of the club but the Belgian boss is now looking for his first European win at the helm.

His side are coming into this clash off the back of a 3-1 win over Hearts in the semi-final of the League Cup, a game in which two goals from James Tavernier either side of a Scott Wright strike secured the win.

However, that victory does not guarantee that the same XI will be selected for Thursday's outing and here is a predicted line-up for the match, that includes three alterations to the team.

1 GK – Jack Butland

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland.

The Gers number one should keep his place between the sticks as the summer signing on a free transfer from Crystal Palace has been in sublime form.

He has kept two clean sheets in three Europa League outings, along with seven shutouts in 11 Premiership games, and should remain in goal on Thursday.

2 RB – James Tavernier (C)

Dujon Sterling returned from injury to feature off the bench against Hearts but the Gers captain should retain his position at right-back for this clash.

The English dynamo scored two of his side's three goals, including a stunning free-kick into the top corner, last time out and carries a significant goal threat.

3 CB – Connor Goldson

Rangers defender Connor Goldson.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion defender has been in impressive form during the Europa League campaign so far this season and should be selected at the heart of the backline.

Goldson has started all three of the club's group games and played a huge role in the two clean sheets that they have been able to secure, with a dominant duel success rate of 69% and three tackles and interceptions per game.

4 CB – Ben Davies

The first of the three changes that could be made to the XI is left-footed defender Ben Davies coming into the line-up to replace veteran ace Leon Balogun.

Like Goldson, the 28-year-old battler has started all three of the team's group stage games and has done enough to suggest that he is deserving of his place in the team.

These statistics from last time out against Sparta suggest that the defender produced an excellent display in the 0-0 draw to keep a clean sheet for Rangers, with his dominant defensive instincts providing a platform for the rest of the team to build from.

5 LB – Borna Barisic

Rangers defender Borna Barisic.

Another player who could remain in the starting line-up from the win over Hearts is left-back Borna Barisic, who has the potential to provide creativity at the top end of the pitch.

A defender by position, the Croatia international is not confined to his own half and has created two chances per game across two Europa League matches this term, which is 0.5 more per match than any of his teammates have managed.

6 DM – John Lundstram

Rangers midfielder John Lundstram.

The English whiz could line up at the base of the midfield, as he did against Hearts, and look to continue his fine form in Europe so far this season.

Lundstram has created two 'big chances' and made 2.7 tackles and interceptions per game across his three Europa League outings, which suggests that he has made an impact at both ends of the pitch.

7 DM – Jose Cifuentes

Rangers midfielder Jose Cifuentes

The second of the three changes that could be made is Jose Cifuentes being selected from the start to partner Lundstram over Scotland international Ryan Jack.

He is yet to start a match under Clement and this game could be an opportunity to name him in the line-up, particularly with Rangers being at home and needing to be on the front foot.

Cifuentes completed two dribbles and created one chance in his only Europa League start against Betis and arrived at Ibrox after a return of seven goals and six assists in 28 matches during the 2022 MLS campaign for LAFC, whose coach Marc Dos Santos lauded him as “very dynamic.

Whereas, Jack has only played nine minutes of Europa League football this term and has averaged 0.6 key passes and 0.3 dribbles per match in the Premiership, which suggests that he does not offer as much attacking quality as the Ecuador international.

8 RW – Ross McCausland

The third and final alteration that the Belgian head coach could make is to be bold and bring in Ross McCausland for a start on the right of the attack.

Scott Wright was brought on half time to replace Todd Cantwell against Hearts, a decision that the manager confirmed was a tactical one, and popped up with a superb goal to secure the win with a crisp, driven, finish into the bottom corner from the right side of the box.

However, he is now a serious doubt for the match with a muscle injury and McCausland could fill in for him as a direct wide option, instead of Cantwell, who prefers to drift into central positions to make things happen.

The former Norwich City man has gone four games without a goal or an assist to his name in all competitions and could now be ditched from the XI in order to bring in the academy graduate to offer natural width on the right, which is what Wright did with his cameo against Hearts.

9 AM – Sam Lammers

Rangers forward Sam Lammers.

In the number ten position, the summer signing from Atalanta could retain his place after one goal and one assist in his last two outings, albeit both of those came in the 5-0 win over Dundee.

The 26-year-old forward has yet to provide a goal or an assist in this competition for the Light Blues, though, and should be hoping to change that on Thursday.

10 LW – Abdallah Sima

Rangers winger Abdallah Sima.

On the left of the attack, Sima should start as he has proven himself to be an excellent goalscoring threat since his loan switch from Brighton & Hove Albion.

The winger has contributed with two goals in three Europa League appearances and chipped in with five goals and one assist in six Premiership starts.

India call up Prithvi Shaw, Hanuma Vihari for last two Tests in England

Opening batsman M Vijay and left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav were dropped from the squad

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Aug-20181:57

‘Vijay’s exclusion is slightly perturbing’ – Chopra

Batsmen Prithvi Shaw and Hanuma Vihari have been called up to India’s Test squad for the final two matches in England. Opening batsman M Vijay, who was out for a pair at Lord’s and then dropped from the XI at Trent Bridge, and left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav, whose selection in the second Test had raised eyebrows, have been dropped. It is understood that Vijay’s poor form – six single-digit scores in his last 11 innings – has prompted the team management to think about grooming a younger opener. At 34, Vijay’s international future now looks uncertain.Kuldeep has been sent back home to play for the India A team in two four-day matches against Australia A in Visakhapatnam. The decision is believed to be made because of the conditions in England, where one spinner in the XI has usually sufficed. India coach Ravi Shastri told the media at the end of the Trent Bridge Test that offspinner R Ashwin, who was suffering from a hip injury, would be fit in time for the next Test in Southampton starting August 30. There is also left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja in the squad.”Ashwin will be okay,” Shastri said. “The fact that he bowled 20-25 overs clearly suggests it [the hip injury] is not that bad. This break will be ideal for him. If there was a Test match starting in three days’ time, then it would have been a problem.”1:39

The Prithvi Shaw story

The 18-year old Shaw captained India to the Under-19 World Cup title in February and has since been part of India’s A teams. He also has an IPL contract with Delhi Daredevils. Vihari, meanwhile, has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket, and the 24-year old averages 59.79 from 63 first-class matches. No one currently playing first-class cricket has a has a better average. Both men are in good form as well, having each struck centuries against South Africa A in Bengaluru at the start of August. They were also part of the A team in England last month, when Shaw was especially effective as an opening batsman, scoring 188 in a four-day game against West Indies A. That is his highest score – he has seven centuries in all – in 14 first-class games since making his debut for Mumbai in January 2017. Vihari began his career with Hyderabad but has now moved to Andhra, a team he now captains. Among his 5142 runs are 15 hundreds and 24 fifties, including a highest score of 302 not out.Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was ruled out of the first three Tests with a lower-back issue, was absent from this squad as well. Having aggravated the injury while playing the third ODI against England in July, he has been undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. BCCI’s release announcing the squad did not contain any updates on the fast bowler’s fitness.India squad: Virat Kohli (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Prithvi Shaw, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rishabh Pant (wk), Hardik Pandya, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Karun Nair, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Hanuma VihariIndia A squad for four-day matches against Australia A: Shreyas Iyer (capt), Mayank Agarwal, R Samarth, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Ankit Bawne, Shubman Gill, KS Bharat (wk), Shahbaz Nadeem, Kuldeep Yadav, K Gowtham, Rajneesh Gurbani, Navdeep Saini, Ankit Rajpoot, Mohammed Siraj
