An injury setback to an important Southampton player acts as a "huge blow" for the club, according to pundit Carlton Palmer.
Ross Stewart's struggles at Southampton
The Saints look well-placed for a promotion push in the Championship this season, sitting fourth in the table and eight points adrift of the automatic places. They have had to make do without summer signing Ross Stewart for almost the entire campaign to date, however, with the 27-year-old suffering a miserable time with injuries, being limited to just two substitute appearances in the league that have totalled only 17 minutes.
There were such high hopes for Stewart when he joined Southampton from Sunderland during the transfer window, following an excellent spell for the Black Cats, but it hasn't worked out at all yet. The fact that he arrived with an injury did make it a risk, though.
Now, the Saints attacker has suffered another injury blow, however, with a two-month spell on the sidelines expected after picking up an issue against Huddersfield Town late last month, with the player seeing a specialist.
Ross Stewart injury a "huge blow"
Speaking to Football League World, Palmer reacted to this latest injury setback regarding Stewart, admitting it is a "huge blow" for both the player and Russell Martin.
Former Sunderland striker Ross Stewart.
"It’s bad news, really bad news for Southampton with the latest injury to Ross Stewart. “I always thought this was a gamble, it wasn’t just a hamstring injury or something like that, it was an Achilles tendon injury. He was going to be on the sidelines for some considerable time.
"I know they jumped the gun because they believed other clubs would be looking for his signature, but I don’t think anyone would have signed him until he had proven his fitness. Achilles injuries are very hard to recover from, and hopefully Ross will come back from them, but they’re long-term.
"So, it was a huge blow for the manager, after the club spent £10m on signing Stewart, and he may need to go to the board and convince them to give him money to buy another striker. They’re going very well in the Championship, they’ve got a real chance of automatic promotion. Hopefully, the board will understand, they obviously took a gamble, and it hasn’t worked out. A huge blow for Ross, and for Southampton."
This is such a cruel blow for Stewart, who will be desperate to prove his worth in a Southampton shirt and play a key role in their promotion push this season.
Southampton could find dream Armstrong partner by unleashing "monster" in 2024
This Southampton flop could be given another opportunity to impress on his return to St Mary’s next year.
ByKelan Sarson Dec 6, 2023
Having got himself back fit again, the former Sunderland ace will now have to show plenty of mental resolve in his latest recovery, hopefully returning for the business end of the season and making some big contributions.
Away from Stewart's personal setback, it is also clearly a big issue for Martin, who will have to make do without a big-name attacker for an extended period once again. Having him available could make life so much easier for the manager, in terms of rotation at a busy time during the festive period, but the Saints will again have to get by with the current available players.

Liverpool are reportedly in the race to sign a "fantastic" young talent with a big future in the game, with the Reds thought to be "drooling" over him currently.
Liverpool transfer rumours
It remains to be seen if the Reds will make signings in the January transfer window or not, with the decision ultimately falling to Jurgen Klopp, who may simply be happy to get by with the current options at his disposal.
Liverpool have certainly been linked with plenty of players in the last few weeks, however, with a mix of defensive and midfield targets mooted as possible options, in order to increase their hopes of winning the Premier League title this season.
At the back, Goncalo Inacio is the player who seems to be backed to move to Anfield more than most, although it could be difficult to snap up the influential Sporting CP star midway through the season. Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi, who was denied brilliantly by Alisson last weekend, is another name who has been mentioned.
Meanwhile, Fluminense ace Andre has been seen as a long-time target in the middle of the park, while talk of a move for Fulham's Joao Palhinha has also emerged again of late.
Liverpool want Leny Yoro
Another transfer rumour has now dropped, with Le10Sport [via Sport Witness] saying that Liverpool are very much in the race to sign Lille centre-back Leni Yoro, who is a highly-rated young player.
The Reds are apparently "drooling" over the 18-year-old, especially as Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip are "not eternal" in terms of age, considering both are now 32. There are "several profiles in mind" when it comes to eyeing up potential signings, and Yoro falls into one of the categories, with the Reds "determined" to play a role in his future.
Manchester City and Manchester United are both mentioned as potential suitors, however, so there could be a fierce battle to acquire the Frenchman's signature.
Liverpool could do with looking into signing a new centre-back in January or next summer, given the aforementioned advancing years of Van Dijk and Matip, not to mention the fact that both Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez have not been without injury problems down the years.
Yoro could be a perfect signing for the Reds, with the Lille starlet a player of so much long-term promise, but also someone who could immediately arrive as a strong squad option for Klopp.

He has been described as a "fantastic" player by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, and at just 18 years of age, he may only go on to grow as the years pass, assuming he remains focused and avoids serious injury. The fact that other Premier League rivals are interested means that it may not be easy for Liverpool to get their man, but the chance to work alongside Klopp could be a huge lure for Yoro, and his compatriot Konate could even do his best to sell the club to him.

Much of the recent months in Indian women’s cricket has been dominated by squabbles, but come match day, the team produced a sensational performance. They were away from home. They were facing one of the traditionally strong teams in the circuit and none of it mattered. India spun New Zealand out for 192 and Smriti Mandhana helped chase it down with great authority, scoring her fourth ODI century along the way. Her innings, which was typically free-flowing, included nine fours and three sixes and wrapped up the game with nine wickets and 17 overs to spare. The match-changing contributions, though, came from India’s bowlers. Their decision to field seemed to be backfiring with New Zealand’s openers putting on a fifty-run partnership. But in the 14th over, Deepti Sharma ran Sophie Devine out and also took care of her partner Suzie Bates as the score slipped from 61 for 0 to 70 for 3.That opened up the middle order for Poonam Yadav, whose array of slow legbreaks got rid of New Zealand’s No 3, 4, and 5. Lauren Down was stumped for 0, while Amy Satterthwaite (31 off 45) and Amelia Kerr (28 off 60) could not make the most of their starts. New Zealand lurched from 136 for 4 to 148 for 7 and were eventually bowled out for 192.India’s openers then put on a 190-run partnership with Jemimah Rodrigues scoring an unbeaten 81 off 94 balls with nine fours and Mandhana, falling to Kerr, only when victory was one hit away.

Losses ranging from PKR 200 million to 700 million have led the teams to seek a financial restructuring of the league as well as tax exemptions from the government

PSL franchises incurred losses ranging from PKR 200 million to 700 million (USD 1.4 million to USD 5 million approx) each in the first two seasons of the league – losses that have led the teams to seek a financial restructuring of the league as well as tax exemptions from the Pakistan government.ESPNcricinfo has obtained a copy of a letter that was sent by the PCB to the finance minister of Punjab, which includes consolidated financial details of the five franchises from the 2016 and 2017 seasons. This is the letter that the PCB had erroneously sent to all franchises, inadvertently revealing the financial details of each franchise to the others, a slip-up that the PCB chairman Ehsan Mani had to apologise for.Over the last couple of seasons, franchises have raised concerns over the amount of tax they have had to pay on top of their franchise fees and other operational expenses, all contributing to the losses they are incurring. According to the letter, Lahore Qalandars – the least successful franchise on the field, having finished last each season – have incurred the largest losses: PKR 312,744,021 in 2016 and PKR 420,914,836 in 2017.Quetta Gladiators, the lowest-priced franchise when the league was launched, have incurred the smallest losses: PKR 46,530,560 in the opening season and PKR 63,518,476 in 2017. Quetta are among the more successful franchises, having finished runners-up twice in three seasons.Karachi Kings, the most expensive franchise when the league was launched, incurred losses of PRK 117,028,811 in 2016 and PKR 60,846,776 in 2017. Islamabad United, the current champions, twice winners and the league’s most successful franchise, lost PKR 184,148,300 and PKR 241,981,640 in 2016 and 2017 respectively. The 2017 champions Peshawar Zalmi made a loss of PKR 237,233,858 in the opening season but reduced that ten-fold to PKR 20,152,767 in their winning season. The figures may seem eye-opening but the fact that the league is mostly played in the UAE, where logistics and operational costs are much higher and sponsorship cannot be leveraged as it might have had it been played in Pakistan, are a big factor. Additionally, the first set of broadcast and commercial rights deals (signed for the first three seasons) were relatively lower – the new broadcast deal, for example, is 358% higher than the first one – and that has affected the revenue each franchise receives from the central pool.
One of the main concerns of the franchises is that the franchise fee they pay to the PCB every year is in US dollars – the value of the Pakistani rupee against the dollar has plummeted, however, over the last six months. The first owners of the Multan franchise, who pulled out after one season, cited the dollar fluctuation as one of the main reasons for their leaving. The Multan Sultans are believed to have made a loss of approximately PKR 400 million in the one season they played in 2018.The other big concern is the taxes paid on the franchise fee. According to the figures in the letter, franchise fees made up anywhere from 30% to 91% of a franchise’s total costs in 2016 and 2017.”The PCB is currently invoicing franchises by adding up Sales Tax [16%] amount which is recovered by PCB from the franchises…,” explains the letter, sent in early December by the PCB’s chief operating officer Subhan Ahmed.”In addition to the above, the Federal Government’s withholding tax currently chargeable at 10% of the franchise fee is also levied by the PCB and deposited with the Federal Board of Revenue. The amount of franchisee fee plus taxes adds to the financial hardships of the franchisee who in addition to these, also incur costs of players’ match fees, logistics etc in the UAE and Pakistan. Thus it adds to their financial burden since they are incurring heavy losses.”PSL is still in its nascent years and unless measures/steps are taken to protect the brand there is a risk that the franchisees will start pulling out of the PSL. We have already have one such instance when Multan Sultans team’s contract had to be terminated on account of failure to meet their financial obligations.”The PCB makes the case that once the league moves back to Pakistan properly – they are planning to play eight games in Pakistan this season – then not only will the franchises be able to move towards breaking even (because of lower costs), but it will also generate “higher economic activity in the country”.
Until then, the PCB has asked the Punjab government to provide tax relief to the franchises, sponsors and rights holders for a period of five years. The Multan franchise has since found a new owner, a consortium led by Ali Tareen agreeing to pay a franchise fee of USD 6.35 million – 144.5% more expensive than the Karachi franchise – when the PCB’s base price was set at USD 5.21 million. That indicates, if nothing else, that investors still see value in the brand. The five original franchises have a 10-year ownership agreement with the PCB, while Multan have a seven-year agreement (the PSL model doesn’t allow perpetuity rights). For teams, the major sources of earning are the central pool revenues from media rights and central sponsorships, and gate money – which is shared out equally among the franchises. The sale of TV rights and title sponsorship this year – for USD 36 million and USD 14 million respectively – should, according to one PCB official, help at least two low-valued franchises start making profits.

Aston Villa are flying high in the Premier League under Unai Emery; nevertheless, he could be left a man down in January following recent developments.
Aston Villa see off Brentford
Once again, Aston Villa continue to live up to their billing in the Premier League and find themselves just one point behind league leaders Arsenal after late strikes from Alex Moreno and Ollie Watkins helped to reverse the tide at the Gtech Community Stadium after Keane Lewis-Potter opened the scoring.
In a bad-tempered affair, Ben Mee was sent off for the hosts and Boubacar Kamara for the visitors; meanwhile, ten players in total were booked during the affair alongside both managers, which could provoke disciplinary action from the Football Association for the respective clubs' failing to control their players.

He could be on the move in January…
BySean Markus Clifford Dec 17, 2023
Emery indicated in his post-match press conference that his players' behaviour may have overstepped the mark despite acknowledging that they may have been provoked in some cases, as he stated via Birmingham Live: "Of course, our behaviour is being fantastic, but today maybe not good. I want to explain to the players how we can react when we are under pressure in some circumstances there was provocation from them."
Nevertheless, the Aston Villa support will be delighted with their side's willingness to fight for the jersey and nobody can deny that their commitment to the cause has been a major driving factor in their unexpected title challenge.
Sheffield United come next for the Villans on Friday night at Villa Park; however, they will also have an eye on the upcoming January transfer window. Now, a new report has suggested that Emery may lose one of his depth options once the market opens for activity.
Clement Lenglet loan deal could be terminated
According to Football Insider, Barcelona could look to terminate Clement Lenglet's loan deal at Aston Villa because he is still yet to feature in a single Premier League match this campaign. The report states that the France international could now return to Barcelona in the New Year and then be sold on for profit as La Blaugrana battle with financial problems that have left them in a position where they need to raise funds to enact their own transfer business.
