Eoin Morgan cops one-ODI suspension for slow over-rate

Jonny Bairstow has also earned a demerit point for striking the stumps with his bat after being dismissed in the third ODI

England, 2-0 up in the five-match ODI series against Pakistan after three games, will be without Eoin Morgan when they take the field at Trent Bridge to try and wrap up the series, after their captain was suspended for one match for the team’s slow over-rate in the third ODI in Bristol. After batting first in Bristol, Pakistan finished on 358 for 9 and England crossed the mark with 31 balls remaining for a six-wicket win. After the game, England were deemed to be two overs short after time allowances were taken into consideration, and match referee Richie Richardson, in accordance with Article 2.22.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players, imposed the sanction.Morgan had been found guilty of a similar offence during the Barbados ODI against West Indies on February 22, and since this was the second such infraction within a 12-month period, he had to accept the ban as well as a fine of 40% of his match fee. The other members of the playing XI had to cough up 20% of their fees too.Jonny Bairstow, the Man of the Match for his 93-ball 128 in the chase, was also pulled up after the match. Paul Reiffel and Michael Gough, the on-field umpires for the game, and Chris Gaffaney, the third umpire, charged him with misconduct.Bairstow, after he was dismissed in the 29th over of the England innings, struck the stumps with his bat, and therefore breached Article 2.2 of the ICC Code, which relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match”.One demerit point has been added to Bairstow’s disciplinary record – it was his first offence since the introduction of the revised Code in September 2016.The fourth ODI will be played on Friday, and the final game is scheduled for Headingley on May 19.

Arsenal compiling AFCON scout reports ahead of move for "elite" £68m gem

The January transfer window is due to slam shut on Thursday night and Arsenal are yet to make a first-team addition to bolster their playing squad. Mikel Arteta's side are chasing Premier League and Champions League glory in the second half of the season and a signing or two could boost their chances of a successful campaign.

Latest Arsenal transfer news

The Gunners have been linked with a swoop for Napoli centre-forward Victor Osimhen as the club have reportedly been in contact with his representatives ahead of a possible move for the marksman. Fellow Premier League side Chelsea and Spanish giants Real Madrid are also interested in signing the Nigeria international, who is set to be available for a fee of €140m (£119m) to any side outside of Italy.

The 25-year-old number nine, who scored a staggering 26 goals in the Serie A last season, is currently at the Africa Cup of Nations with his country and has scored one goal in four outings. He is not the only star of the tournament who is on Arsenal's radar, though, as they are also keen on one of Ivory Coast's key men – Ousmane Diomande.

Ousmane Diomande transfer update

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, as relayed by Sport Witness, the Gunners have sent their scouts to watch the central defender in action for his country at the AFCON. The report claims that Arteta's side are compiling detailed reports on the 20-year-old colossus, who has started twice in the competition so far, as they are one of a number of clubs eyeing up a swoop to sign the Sporting giant.

Ousmane Diomande for Sporting against Benfica.

It states that a January transfer is 'impossible' and that Arsenal, along with the other unnamed sides scouting him at the tournament, are collating information on his performances ahead of a possible summer approach to add him to the squad to compete with the likes of Gabriel and William Saliba.

Sporting are said to be looking for a fee within the region of €80m (£68m) for their star centre-back, although it remains to be seen whether or not they will maintain that stance through to the next transfer window.

Interestingly, FBref name his teammate Goncalo Inacio as one of the most similar players to Diomande over the past 365 days in comparable competitions. The Portugal international was touted as an Arsenal target last month and the Gunners could land a dream alternative to him by signing the Ivorian starlet.

As you can see in the table above, both centre-backs are progressive passers who consistently look to advance the ball into dangerous positions for their teammates to do their work at the top end of the pitch.

Inacio has averaged more progressive passes and carries but has also attempted eight more passes per 90 with a slightly worse success rate, which suggests that Diomande could reach his levels of progression with a higher usage rate.

At the age of 20, the £68m-rated gem, who was hailed as an "elite talent" by scout Jacek Kulig, is two years younger than the Portuguese enforcer and has plenty of time left to develop and improve, which is why he could be an exciting long-term signing for Arsenal if they can win the race for his signature in the summer.

Tom Banton, James Hildreth lead Somerset to Royal London Cup glory

Depleted Hampshire were restricted to 244 for 8 and Somerset were rarely troubled in their chase

Alan Gardner25-May-2019

The last domestic one-day final at Lord’s may have been left in the shadow by World Cup schedulers, but Somerset produced an all-round display worthy of the ground and the occasion to lift their first piece of silverware in more than a decade. Hampshire, deprived of key players, rarely looked like being able to defend the trophy they claimed on the back of a powerful batting display last year. They won the toss this time but little else.Somerset have an unwanted reputation as perennial runners-up but it did not take long for the tractor beam to lock on, as Tom Banton, the dashing young opener who may have interested the watching Ed Smith, set them on their way with 69 from 67 balls. Eventually it fell to a county stalwart in James Hildreth to see them across the line with an unbeaten half-century. It was Hildreth who hit the winning runs when Somerset won the Twenty20 Cup in 2005 (aged 20, just as Banton is now) and there may well be considerable quantities of cider consumed in honour of both.”We’re absolutely desperate to win, I’m not going to lie,” Somerset’s captain, Tom Abell, said afterwards. “I guess it does break the shackles a little bit. Now hopefully people will be talking about us as winners, as opposed to runners-up.”Even as England played Australia in a World Cup warm-up match on Hampshire’s home ground, some 15,700 people revelled in the atmosphere at Lord’s. Good weather, good cricket and room for the county game to catch the eye – it is not a complicated formula.”Somerset, la-la-Lord’s!” proclaimed the t-shirt of one west country supporter, and the chants were quick to start up. Banton met some indifferent bowling from Fidel Edwards with a flurry of early boundaries and although the West Indian did eventually dismiss both openers in consecutive overs, the fact Somerset had more than 100 on the board told the story of Hampshire’s efforts to undermine the chase.Banton glittered in the afternoon sunshine, confirming some of the pre-match hype on what used to be the county game’s biggest stage. He is already on England’s radar, having won Under-19s recognition, and could come into ODI consideration sooner rather than later. Whether performances in the 50-over final from next season, when the competition will understudy The Hundred, count for as much with the selectors remains to be seen. The first of Banton’s ten boundaries came via a glance to fine leg, but it was in Edwards’ second over that his star quality shone through. A flamingo-style flick, more than worthy of KP comparisons, was followed by an effortless checked pull off his hip that cleared deep square leg for six; the next ball also disappeared for four through midwicket as Somerset hit their stride. With Azhar Ali ticking along at the other end, Hampshire’s small window in which to make life uncomfortable for Somerset was rapidly closing. Banton reverse-swept Mason Crane’s legspin, then drove another boundary before following up with an orthodox sweep for four more, as Somerset’s hundred came up in the 17th over. Edwards mustered a response but it was too late for Hampshire, as Hildreth saw them home and the renditions of “Blackbird” could begin. With James Vince and Liam Dawson, two of Hampshire’s key players as they topped the South Group, unavailable thanks to late call-ups by England (and Aiden Markram an expected absentee with South Africa), responsibility fell largely on the shoulders of Sam Northeast, the stand-in captain, and Rilee Rossouw, who was Man of the Match for his hundred a year ago. Northeast made a battling half-century but it was left to a late salvo from James Fuller, who struck the only sixes of the Hampshire innings in a ninth-wicket stand of 64, to give them something to bowl at.At around the time Hampshire lost their fourth wicket, Dawson was just coming on for his first bowl in England’s match at the Ageas Bowl. How Hampshire fans would have preferred to see him walking out to the middle at Lord’s. Instead it was Gareth Berg, with a List A highest score of 75, who joined Northeast.Boundaries were at a premium as Somerset’s bowlers bustled about their business – given the scoring rate, this could almost have been a final from 2001, when Somerset last won a 50-over trophy at Lord’s. Jamie Overton broke a 49-run stand when Berg picked out deep backward square for the second of his three wickets and Hampshire’s hopes of setting an imposing target seemingly departed with Northeast as he hacked across line, patience exhausted, to be bowled by his Somerset counterpart Abell for 56.Abell had only delivered one over in the format previously but claimed his maiden List A wickets, while there was a brace for Josh Davey, reward for a tight spell with the new ball. Perhaps hoping to follow the template of their victory over Kent last year, Hampshire chose to bat beneath low-slung cloud on a humid morning at Lord’s but, while not exactly a green nibbler in September, there was enough in the surface for Somerset’s battery of right-arm medium bowlers to take advantage of.At 50 for 3, Rossouw fired off a retaliatory volley, introducing himself to Lewis Gregory with a brusque force through the covers and then a swat over mid-on for four more. But having barrelled to 28 off 17 balls, he fell to the extra pace of Jamie Overton, cramped into edging a back-foot drive on to his stumps. Somerset had come to Lord’s with their “gurt big stick” and would not be denied.

Emery and Villa hold “genuine” interest in one-time Dean Smith target

In 2020, Aston Villa struck a deal to sign goalkeeper Emi Martinez from Arsenal for a fee of just under £20m. Martinez had played the final eight Premier League games of the previous season following an injury to Bernd Leno, and also helped Arsenal defeat Manchester City and Chelsea to win the FA Cup.

However, when Mikel Arteta decided that he'd stick with a returning Leno as his number one the following season, it opened the door for Martinez to move on and become the main man elsewhere. The Argentine has enjoyed huge success since moving to Villa Park, winning his side's Player of the Year Award in his debut season and then going on to land the World Cup Golden Glove and the Yashin Trophy after his country achieved immortality in Qatar.

Three and a half years on from Martinez's arrival, Villa are looking to strike gold again with another out-and-favour Arsenal player, this time Emile Smith-Rowe. The club's interest dates back to 2021, when Dean Smith was manager, as they saw two bids rejected, the second of which was worth £30m. Arsenal were "adamant" that he wasn't for sale, but now there's a chance that Unai Emery might succeed where Smith failed.

Smith-Rowe transfer is "one to watch"

Speaking to GiveMeSport, CBS Sports journalist Ben Jacobs says that Villa hold a "genuine" interest in Smith-Rowe. He's unsure whether the player will be allowed to leave before the transfer deadline at the start of next month, but he reckons Arsenal may be tempted by a good offer. This, then, is a very much a transfer story "to watch" in 2024.

kalvin-phillips-emile-smith-rowe-west-ham-opinion

“Smith Rowe is still an interesting point of discussion at Arsenal. I’m still told the Villa interest is genuine. Whether or not anything moves in January remains to be seen, and I think if Smith Rowe, as an academy graduate, were to leave, then it may divide the Arsenal fan base a little bit. But it wouldn't surprise me if the right offer comes if Arsenal consider that. Again, that may be one to watch in 2024 rather than in the next few days. But I am told there is something genuine in the Villa interest in Smith Rowe.”

Kai Havertz could help Villa finally land Smith-Rowe

The last time that Villa tried to sign Smith-Rowe, it seemed inevitable that Arsenal would swat away any offers that arrived. He was coming off a season where he'd started 18 of the 23 Premier Leagues games for which he was available, and also made the line-up eight times on his side's run to the Europa League semifinals.

Now, though, things are looking very different. Smith-Rowe has appeared in 13 games up to this point, but his only league start came in a 5-0 win over Sheffield United in late October. An unused subsitute eight times in the top-flight, he didn't fare much better in the Champions League group stages either with just 42 recorded minutes.

It must have hurt the Englishman to see summer arrival Kai Havertz converted into a midfielder by Mikel Arteta and then used more often (the German has played double the games in the middle of the park so far this season).

Another thing that's changed is Villa's standing. In 2021, they were coming off the back of an 11th-place finish, but now they're level on points with Arsenal and in with a great chance of qualifying for the Champions League. That could be key in making them a much more appealing destination for Smith-Rowe.
