Australia choose worst time to put in 'worst performance' of the World Cup

Aaron Finch admits his side were simply ‘outplayed’ by England

Osman Samiuddin at Edgbaston11-Jul-2019Australia chose the worst possible time to put in their “worst performance” of the tournament, an eight-wicket thumping not only ending their world title defence but also consigning them to a first semi-final defeat at a World Cup.In days to come the defeat might sting less, especially in light of where Australia’s ODI form has been over the last year, but Aaron Finch could not hide his disappointment.WATCH on Hotstar (India only) – Highlights of England’s win over Australia”In terms of where we were 12 months ago, obviously I think we have made a huge amount of progress,” he said. “Really proud of everyone involved for how much hard work and how far we have come, but at the same time we came here today to win a semi-final and get ourselves into a position to win another World Cup.”So that was really disappointing how it ended, especially to put up probably one of our worst performances overall for the tournament, so that was really disappointing.”There was a brief phase, during a 103-run partnership between Steve Smith and Alex Carey, when Australia were threatening to do what countless Australian sides before them have done at these tournaments. But Australia were otherwise outplayed, as Finch admitted. And it was the very first ten overs of the game in which the semi-final was lost, Australia left dazed, confused and almost down at 27 for 3.”The damage was really done with the ball,” Finch said. “That sets you back. That forced us to rebuild for such a long time and start to drag some momentum back and then, like I said, you lose a couple of quick wickets again, new batters starting, it is always tough against really good leg-spin and good quicks as well.”So, all in all, we were totally outplayed to be honest all throughout the day, so you look back at that and you can analyse each ten overs, but just outplayed.”Aaron Finch looks on during Australia’s semi-final defeat•IDI via Getty Images

Carey apart, each of the players who had done so much to get Australia to this point – the ones who stand up in big games, said Finch – failed. They’re not at all in the crisis that England found themselves in after the 2015 World Cup – and this tournament, as Finch pointed out, has been part of overall progress – but a longer-term look towards the next World Cup will be a natural outcome. Part of that will take in the new ODI league that leads into qualification for 2023.”I think that after a World Cup you always start looking and you have one eye towards the next one,” Finch said. “I think that as a management, senior players, I’m sure over the next next couple of months or so we will sit down and start talking about that and start planning how we think that we can best plan and prepare and improve over the next four years to get us to go, well two steps further.”I think that every team will do that. You start looking at what you can improve most, areas that you can identify that you need some work to be done and that will happen no doubt – that happens naturally with players when you are talking about the game and trying to find ways to improve.”But as a coaching staff, as a management, that will be really important as well that everyone gets on the same page and everyone pulls in the same direction which is what we have done. We have been really lucky. Everyone has bought into the way we have played and it is unfortunate we have come up short.”

– Somos grenás, somos Tiva, somos Diva, somos todos. Somos de todos. Sempre!

Clement can bench Matondo by unleashing Rangers’ £8k-p/w gem

Glasgow Rangers 3-0 Premiership victory over Livingston on the weekend saw them cut the gap to just three points at the top of the league table.

Philippe Clement could lead the Gers level on points with Celtic at the summit should they beat Aberdeen at Ibrox this evening, and it would make for a remarkable turnaround, especially considering the club lost three of their first seven top-flight matches this term.

With a League Cup victory under their belts and progress to the last 16 of the Europa League, Rangers certainly have the ascendancy as they look to end Celtic’s dominance of the Premiership recently.

The Dons will be a stern proposition, especially with the figure of Neil Warnock travelling north to take control of the club until the end of the season.

Clement, therefore, may have to make a few changes to his starting XI for the clash this evening and that could see a few players drop out from the weekend win.

One player who drops to the bench could be Rabbi Matondo, despite his solid showing against Livingston.

Rabbi Matondo will drop to the bench against Aberdeen

The Welsh winger has returned to some sort of form this season following on from a relatively underwhelming campaign in Glasgow during 2022/23.

Much was expected of him following his big-money move from Schalke in the summer of 2022 and the Gers badly needed a creative and pacey winger who could pose a direct goal threat.

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

Despite the early promise, Matondo only managed to register five assists throughout the whole season, and it looked as though he was on his way out of Ibrox last summer.

He enjoyed a solid pre-season and worked his way into Michael Beale’s plans for the first few weeks of the season, culminating in the 23-year-old scoring his first goal for the club in a Champions League qualifier against PSV Eindhoven.

Since that match, Matondo has scored another two goals along with grabbing a further four assists, and he has proven to be a reliable attacking outlet on the left flank.

Clement started him against Livingston on the weekend and while it was a mixed performance, it did produce a goal and a few glimpses of his undoubted potential.

Rabbi Matondo’s performance vs Livingston in numbers

With Abdallah Sima out for the foreseeable future due to suffering an injury on international duty with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations, Matondo has been looked upon to step up to the plate and start producing.

Against Livi, he certainly posed a threat going forward, yet his final ball was often poor, evidenced by the fact he failed to deliver a single accurate cross from three deliveries, and he succeeded with just two of his five attempted dribble attempts.

Matondo’s persistence in trying to beat defenders resulted in him losing possession 17 times during his 61 minutes on the pitch, yet he more than made up for it with a wonderful effort to give Rangers a two-goal advantage.

It was a sublime effort which nestled into the bottom corner from the edge of the box, and it proves that he can certainly add something to Clement’s team.

Against the Dons, however, the Belgian may be set to unleash January signing Oscar Cortes, especially as the youngster made his debut on the weekend.

Oscar Cortes could make his first start for Rangers vs Aberdeen

The Colombian signed for the Light Blues towards the end of the transfer window on a loan deal from RC Lens, and it looks as though it could be a shrewd bit of business by the club.

While he only had 30 minutes to get into the game, Cortes delivered one accurate cross, made one key pass and took 25 touches, indicating that he was keen on getting into the game as often as possible.

It was a positive debut and the more he plays, the better he will get, especially in front of a packed Ibrox crowd wanting the youngster to showcase his talents.

The 20-year-old may have only made four Ligue 1 appearances for Lens during the first half of the season, yet he scored once and grabbed an assist while averaging just 13 minutes per game in the French top flight.

The £8k-per-week sensation had registered 12 goal contributions – seven goals and five assists – across just 28 games for Millonarios prior to his move to Europe and this is evidence that he can be a goal threat from either out wide or just behind the striker.

Lens forward Oscar Cortes.

With Todd Cantwell and Tom Lawrence battling it out for the number ten slot, it is clear Cortes will be fighting for a place in the side alongside Matondo and Clement could unleash him tonight.

His full range of skills were demonstrated during the U20 World Cup last summer, where he finished the tournament with six goals and assists, which ranked him fourth out of all the players, while he also ranked first in the competition for big chances created (four) and third for key passes per game (3.4) and these figures clearly prove Cortes can generate plenty of chances for his teammates while posing as a goal threat too.

RC Lens podcaster Lucas Colin spoke to the Rangers Review regarding what the Ibrox faithful could expect from Cortes, saying:

"He's like cold blood, very calm in the box. He can be a player that you can love very quickly"

Rangers eyeing "clinical" new striker who'd avenge their January mistakes

The Light Blues are reportedly looking at a summer move for the impressive forward.

ByDan Emery Feb 5, 2024

That last statement could come true if he manages to score on his full debut against Aberdeen tonight, and he has everything in his locker to terrorise their defence into submission.

Will Clement go for the tried and tested option of Matondo against Neil Warnock’s men? Or will he go down the surprise element route and unleash the 20-year-old sensation in front of a packed crowd baying for blood?

Only time will tell, but so far during his stint in Glasgow, the Belgian manager has never shied away from making the big decisions and with goals needed against a poor Aberdeen side, whoever does start on the left flank will need to produce the goods.

Elbow blow could hurt Matthew Wade Ashes selection chances

Batsman sent for X-ray after being hit by Lewis Gregory short ball and could be in doubt for selection match

Nothing, it seemed, was capable of stopping Matthew Wade’s march to a place in Australia’s squad for the Ashes series against England next month. For even if selectors had doubts about Wade or other team balance preferences concerning the ODI vice-captain Alex Carey as a back-up for the Test captain Tim Paine, the sheer volume of runs he has been churning out in characteristic, punchy style have allowed little room for argument. However a serious blow to the right arm from the England Lions captain Lewis Gregory, very nearly on the point of the elbow, forced Wade to retire hurt and be sent for an X-ray on day three of a game in which the Australians have steadily taken control.Play was stopped for several minutes as Wade struggled in obvious pain, and though he played out a few more balls before tea, he did not re-emerge in the evening session. The blow left him with plenty of rehab work ahead to be swinging the bat freely in the crucial final warm-up match between the tourists’ 25 available players in Southampton.”Matthew went for a precautionary X-ray after taking a blow to his right elbow,” the team doctor John Orchard said. “The X-ray came back clear but he’s probably suffering from a bruised nerve from the impact and his grip strength is impaired. Matthew’ll be reassessed in the morning but it’s unlikely he’ll bat again in this innings. However we’re very hopeful he’ll recover in good time for the Australia-Australia A game next week.”Hits of this kind can have serious consequences even if they do not result in a fracture, of the kind suffered during the World Cup by Shaun Marsh. David Boon avoided a broken arm when struck similarly by Curtly Ambrose in Adelaide in 1993, but the effect of the injury on the remainder of the match was significant when recalling that Allan Border’s team would ultimately lose by one run, the tightest margin in all Test history.More recently, Ricky Ponting was hit in a similar region by Kemar Roach’s second ball to him in a Test in Perth in 2009. Though Ponting attempted to soldier on for another 40 minutes, the compacting effect of the blow – later described as being like a piece of meat being tenderised with a mallet – affected Ponting’s batting for much of the rest of the summer. For Wade, the injury will be another obstacle to join the many he has overcome to get this close to an international recall, a little less than two years after he played the last of his 22 Tests, against Bangladesh in Chittagong. In that sense, it was also a feather in Gregory’s cap, for he had delivered a bouncer both swift enough to have Wade ducking and skiddy enough to prevent him from avoiding it.The Lions were not without their own concerns – Jamie Porter leaving the field complaining of back spasms, though they had occurred while fielding, not bowling. There were otherwise a series of cameos from the Australians as they set about adding to a 130-run first innings lead, secured by rolling through the last five Lions wickets for 35 with the help of the second new ball. Chris Tremain nabbed four victims though he was more expensive than the watching selection chairman Trevor Hohns would have wanted; Jackson Bird (3 for 51 from 23 overs) and Jon Holland (2 for 56 from 28) kept things tighter.Joe Burns was again dismissed cheaply, this time via an outside edge, before Marcus Harris (50), Kurtis Patterson (38), Mitchell Marsh (26) and skipper Paine (38) gave themselves some time in the middle on a drying surface. Aside from Gregory, the most consistent threat was posed by Jack Leach, who turned some balls expansively on a sun-drenched afternoon.

Chelsea sold homegrown whiz for £180k and now he’s worth £128m

It's been an undeniably positive couple of weeks for Chelsea amid a season that has been tough to endure for fans.

A convincing win at Villa Park in the FA Cup was followed up by a 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace and then, perhaps most impressive of all, a 1-1 draw away to Manchester City.

However, while things are certainly looking up for Mauricio Pochettino and his team, there's no escaping from just how poor this season has been on the whole.

Conor Gallagher

The immense amount of money spent in the summer has not translated into any real success on the pitch, which must be all the more frustrating for the club considering they once lost a youngster for just £180k who'd surely be one of the first names on the teamsheet today.

Chelsea's Mona Lisa

Cobham has produced some brilliant players in recent years who have gone on to excel at other clubs, such as Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori, Marc Guehi and Declan Rice, but there is one who looks destined to have the most extraordinary career of all, Jamal Musiala.

The young German joined the Blues' youth setup from TSV Lehnerz in 2011 and remained in West London for eight years before he opted to join Bayern Munich on July 7 2019, after turning down a long-term offer from Chelsea.

Jamal Musiala

It was a significant loss for the Pensioners, as, despite being so young, his talent was evident to see, and just a year later, he was being described as "ice-cold" by Bayern's then reserve team manager, Sebastian Hoeneß.

However, it was the creator of the Golden Boy award, Massimo Franchi, who described Chelsea's loss the best when last year he claimed: "It would be like the Louvre losing the Mona Lisa!”. This big claim has since been backed up by his performances on the pitch for Bayern's first-team.

The worst part of it all, from the West Londoner's point of view anyway, was that they were only given £180k in exchange, which is only just enough to cover Marc Cucurella's wages for a week.

Why Jamal Musiala would star for Chelsea

So, unfortunately for Pochettino, with how the season has gone for Chelsea so far, it doesn't look like it would take all that much to improve the team, but even if they were playing to their maximum potential, there is no doubt that Musiala would still get in.

For example, across 47 appearances last season, the "incredible" German, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, scored 16 goals and provided 16 assists, meaning he averaged 0.68 goal involvements per match, which for someone who started the campaign as a 19-year-old is remarkable.

His rate of return has slowed somewhat this season, but considering he's still just 20 years old, the fact that he has scored eight goals and provided three assists in 26 appearances is out of this world.

It's not just at the club level where he has impressed either, as the Stuttgart-born gem has already won 25 senior caps for the German national team and was even referred to as the "Messi of the future" at the 2022 World Cup by Die Mannschaft legend Lothar Matthäus.

So, he's already got an impressive record and glowing endorsements from some of the best in the game, but how are his underlying numbers?

Well, rather unsurprisingly, they are fantastic. According to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues in the last 365 days, Musiala ranks in the top 2% of attacking midfielders for successful take-ons, the top 4% for pass competition, the top 9% for interceptions, the top 14% for progressive passes and many more, all per 90.

Finally, away from just his pure talent, if the Blues still had Musiala on their books and decided for whatever reason that they wanted to sell him today, they'd make a fair whack more than they did in 2019, as according to the CIES Football Observatory, the Bayern gem is now worth in the region of €150m, which is about £128m.

Chelsea once lost £3m gem who's outscoring Palmer this season

ByJack Salveson Holmes Feb 19, 2024

Ultimately, there is no doubt that had the 20-year-old dynamo accepted the Blues' long-term offer in 2019, Pochettino would have a terrific talent on his hands to lead the attack.

How can David Warner emerge from his batting funk?

Opener has failed to reach double figures in the Ashes so far but Tim Paine thinks Smith absence can be the ‘poke and prod he needs’ to rediscover his form

Daniel Brettig in Leeds21-Aug-2019

David Warner has had a nightmare start to the series with the bat•Getty Images

David Warner shapes to defend Mitchell Starc, misses, and the plastic stumps in the Headingley nets go flying. All manner of dismissals take place in the nets, real or imagined depending on the fields “set” by the bowler or throw-downer, but few quite so dramatic. The moment rather summed up Warner’s Ashes tour thus far, in which he is yet to reach double figures across four knocks. Married up with his closing three innings in South Africa prior to the Newlands scandal ban, Warner is in the second longest streak without a half century of his career – his worst run was eight innings in New Zealand and Sri Lanka in 2016.At Edgbaston and Lord’s, Warner’s rapid exits were somewhat less of an issue for Australia, bolstered as they were by the genius of Steven Smith. But with Smith out of action in Leeds due to concussion, the tourists’ batting stocks have been made to look exceedingly thin. More than ever, Australia need Warner to find something. The captain Tim Paine is hopeful that Warner will do so this week, referring to Smith’s absence as the “poke and prod” the opener needs.”David, I’ve spoken a lot about the fact he averages close to 50 in Test cricket and he’s done that over a long period of time,” Paine said. “I think with Steve missing this game, it might be the little poke and prod Davey needs. He likes that responsibility and my experience with Davey is when people doubt him and his back is against the wall he comes out swinging. I’m expecting the very best David Warner this week.”How Warner finds his best is somewhat complicated by the way he has approached this tour. For so long a combative, aggressive batsman, his stated goal in England this time around was to calm himself, slow his tempo, and find a balanced rhythm at the crease more sustainable over long innings. During the World Cup, the method worked to a reasonable extent, as he peeled off centuries against Pakistan, Bangladesh and South Africa. But in the semi-final against England he was swiftly beaten by a sharply rising delivery from Chris Woakes, and so far during the Ashes has been found wanting in terms of defensive tightness and decisiveness at the hands of Stuart Broad and Jofra Archer, both pursuing a rigorous line at him from around the wicket. It is a method seldom seen against Warner – Broad has admitted he had previously thought primarily about finding Warner’s edge rather than constraining him by targeting the stumps – but it is proving fiendishly effective. One close observer of Warner has been England’s captain Joe Root, who has marshalled the plans against the left-hander while also mired in his own poor run of batting form. How does Root think a player struggling for runs can find rhythm and confidence again? It starts with honest self-assessment.”You need to be realistic about how you are getting out. And be fair,” Root said. “Sometimes as hard as it might be you have to give credit to the opposition when they’ve bowled some good balls. You don’t want to be over-critical when you don’t need to be. But there are times as well when you got to understand when you got it wrong. And then work it back from there. You don’t become a bad player overnight.”You don’t lose the runs you’ve scored already. And you know you’ve got it in the bank and you’ve proven it before. From my point of view, I have got Ashes hundreds in there in the bank and I know and I know what it takes to win games of cricket. Of course from Dave’s point of view, we’ll be trying to keep him to single figures for as long as possible because he’s a proven performer for Australian cricket.”David Warner’s struggles against Stuart Broad continued•Getty Images

An intriguing returning presence around the Australian side will be Ricky Ponting, who commented during the Lord’s Test that Warner need to be showing more positive intent to score. Certainly, this is the view of Warner’s longtime batting coach and sounding board Trent Woodhill, who has always focused on the 32-year-old’s ability to put bowlers under pressure, leading to fewer deliveries challenging his defence, rather than trying to make him “tighter” or able to bat for longer periods. Most of Warner’s most memorable and impactful innings have been extraordinarily bold in their strokeplay, and it is difficult to see how, given his current struggles in defence, how he will be able to score runs without at least reverting to a more aggressive posture, eyeing off the smallest errors in line or length to pick off. Another window into Warner’s state of mind has been the fact that, at slip, he has struggled to hold catches so far – being a primary offender among the five chances put down at Lord’s. In a vote of faith, Paine reckoned Warner would be staying in the cordon.”I think Davey will probably stay in there, and Marnus – for people who haven’t seen him – he’s probably as good a slipper as there is going around,” he said. “And everywhere else in the field, so he’ll cover Steve with the fast bowling I think at second slip, and then we have Usman Khawaja who did pretty well in Australia last year for Lyno [Nathan Lyon].”So we’ve got a few options there, we’ve got Matthew Wade who’s a wicketkeeper and he can field anywhere. So we’ve got a number of options to go through that spot if we need to. But I expect Davey to go back there, he’s allowed to have a bad day.”That, as much as anything, will be key to Warner finding the runs Australia so dearly need from him at Headingley. Just as he responded to Starc’s stump rattler by calmly picking up the broken wicket and resetting for the next ball, Warner needs to put the Edgbaston and Birmingham dismissals out of his mind and strike a blow when battle is rejoined in Leeds. The incentive, to be a key player in the Test match that sees the Ashes retained by Australia, is enormous.
