Trent Boult set for T20I return as England hope to bounce back

Left-arm seamer set for first T20I since January 2018 with Bairstow set for return to England XI

Big picture”It’s been a great learning day for us,” said Eoin Morgan after a chastening defeat in the third T20I at Nelson. It wasn’t exactly said with relish, but there was obvious conviction in his words as he offered up a subtle variation on one of the abiding themes of his England captaincy.Throughout England’s four-year rise to become the 50-over world champions, Morgan’s reaction to their intermittent setbacks had been to present an unapologetic public face – “no, we will not stop playing our natural attacking game” – even if, in private, he was obliged to give a more honest appraisal of scorelines such as 20 for 6 against South Africa at Lord’s in 2017, or 8 for 5 against Australia at Adelaide.Watch cricket on ESPN+

The difference in those contests, of course, was England’s focus was on fine-tuning a team that was already good enough to take on the world, so presenting an unshakeable belief in the men and the methods was a key part of the process. The remit at this stage of this new-look outfit, on the other hand, couldn’t really be much more different. With the next T20 World Cup only a year away, and with a raft of automatic picks taking a well-earned break, the value of days such as occurred on Tuesday, when England squandered five wickets for ten runs in 18 balls to throw away an enviable chance to go 2-1 up in the series, will only be known in hindsight, if the players concerned take on board the lessons and process them for their next crunch encounter. That said, England have had previous of learning on the hoof in this format. Their run to the final of the World T20 in 2016 was built on a wide-eyed acceptance of the team’s relative naivety, as the team took their licks (not least from Chris Gayle in Mumbai) and found the appropriate response, as players such as Jason Roy and Jos Buttler had the first proper flex of their muscles on the world stage. Had it not been for Carlos Brathwaite’s epic finale in Kolkata, they’d have had more to show for their studiousness than a handful of happy memories. The relative stakes could hardly be lower in this particular series – a post-World Cup fever dream being played beyond the other side of the world, and in a time-zone that deters even the most hardened of English night-owls from tuning in to pay attention. But the opportunity to bed into the fabric of the England set-up, and get some hard-earned experience without attracting any definitive judgements from a public that is broadly speaking looking the other way. That said, they are up against an opponent that really rather fancies getting one over their World Cup vanquishers. New Zealand took their time to find their range in this series after a stutter in the opening match. But with Colin de Grandhomme swinging from the hip in the middle order and Martin Guptill threatening to find some form at the top, they’ve got the weapons to put England’s rookie-dominated outfit under yet more pressure.Form guideEngland LLWWW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
New Zealand WWLLWIn the spotlightWith six of England’s new boys on display in their last outing, there was all the more expectation placed on the team’s relative old sweats … and to varying degrees, they missed the chance to stamp their mark on the contest. But while Dawid Malan and James Vince produced the raw materials for an England victory, it was Sam Billings’ second-ball run-out that really started the rot in the run-chase. That moment also took his series tally to a meagre 23 runs in three innings (albeit with one not-out), and continued the impression of a cricketer who just can’t quite seize the mantle as England’s next cab off the rank. A terrible shoulder injury wrecked his World Cup hopes – he would surely have challenged James Vince for the final batting spot – and his last England innings prior to this tour was a blistering 87 against West Indies in Basseterre. But a white-ball average of 19.00 in what is now a four-year England career is not going to keep him in the frame forever.Welcome back Trent Boult, we’ve been expecting you. New Zealand’s outstanding left-arm quick slots back into the squad after missing the first three games to focus on his red-ball form ahead of the Test series – and four second-innings wickets for Northern Districts in last weekend’s Plunket Shield confirmed his rhythm on that front. However, in T20Is he’s been a bit of a spare part in recent years. He hasn’t featured in any of New Zealand’s last 13 matches dating back to the tri-series final against Australia in Auckland in February 2018. That could be put down largely to the prioritisation of 50-over cricket in the build-up to this summer’s World Cup but, with back-to-back T20 World Cups on the horizon, this is the start of his rebirth in this format. The fact that he’s been something of a fixture for Delhi in the IPL in between whiles suggests he won’t find it too hard to pick up the appropriate rhythm.Team newsBoult’s return to the fray means that it is Lockie Ferguson’s turn to take a break from the front line. He’s not yet made a New Zealand Test debut, but with a round of Plunket Shield fixtures beginning tonight, it’s not out of the question that he could feature again on this England tour. Blair Tickner, a tall and strapping seamer, looked the part in his first outing of the series – and only his second in international cricket – and in bagging both Tom Banton and James Vince in his day’s work, he was one of the linchpins of New Zealand’s win and deserves another chance. Daryl Mitchell and Scott Kuggeleijn may be the men to miss out.New Zealand (possible): 1 Martin Guptill, 2 Colin Munro, 3 Tim Seifert (wk), 4 Colin de Grandhomme, 5 Ross Taylor, 6 Jimmy Neesham, 7 Mitchell Santner, 8 Tim Southee (capt), 9 Ish Sodhi, 10 Trent Boult, 11 Blair TicknerEngland are eager to find out what their new boys are made of – and all six of them featured in the Nelson defeat. But they are equally keen to return home with a series win, and at 2-1 down with two to play, the likelihood is that they revert back to some more tried-and-trusted options. In particular, Jonny Bairstow and Chris Jordan can expect to slot back into the starting XI after sitting out the third fixture, though who makes way for them could be an interesting decision. Tom Banton, underused so far, is surely worth another look – otherwise why bother bringing him all this way – so James Vince, whose three innings have been a microcosm of his promise and frustration, might be the fall guy. Likewise Matt Parkinson, impressive in his two overs at Nelson, is surely worth testing in a must-win contest.England (possible): 1 Jonny Bairstow, 2 Tom Banton, 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Sam Billings (wk), 6 Lewis Gregory, 7 Sam Curran, 8 Tom Curran, 9 Chris Jordan, 10 Matt Parkinson, 11 Pat BrownPitch and conditionsThe solitary floodlit fixture of this five-match series is being played on a drop-in pitch at another of New Zealand’s rugby-dominant venues, with their habitually short square boundaries that will doubtless challenge any spinner who dares to lose his length.Stats and trivia Napier is hosting only its second T20I. New Zealand won the ground’s inaugural fixture, against Bangladesh in January 2017, by six wickets. The absent Kane Williamson anchored the run-chase on that occasion with 73 not out from 55 balls, but Colin de Grandhomme – Man of the Match in their last outing at Nelson – provided the final flourish with 41 from 22 balls. McLean Park is situated in a curiously suburban corner of Napier, albeit a short stroll from the Art Deco-dominated town centre that was extensively rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1931.Stats that matterTim Southee still requires two wickets to become the eighth man to claim 75 T20I wickets, having gone wicketless in his last outing.Adil Rashid requires one more wicket to draw level with Jade Dernbach as the fourth-highest T20I wicket-taker for England. Dernbach took 39 T20I wickets – only Graeme Swann (51), Chris Jordan (52) and Stuart Broad (65) have more for England.Colin Munro requires 35 runs to draw level with Kane Williamson’s run-tally of 1,505 for New Zealand in T20Is. Munro has played one more game (58 to 57), though Williamson has batted once more often. Only three men (Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor) have scored more T20I runs for New Zealand than Williamson. Quotes”Rossco [Taylor] has been asking for freebies all week, but I know he’s got a hefty wallet, so he’ll be paying in full.” “The summer was tragic for me and my family and I like to think that I’ve used what happened in July to spur me on. If I hadn’t used it in a positive way, then I don’t think I’d be here playing for England.”

+ Quem é Luís Oyama, possível reforço do Botafogo

Update: Liverpool make fresh contact in race for Real Madrid star Rodrygo

Liverpool are believed to have made contact with a "special" Real Madrid Champions League winner over a move to Anfield during the summer transfer window.

Liverpool eyeing signings after Klopp

Jurgen Klopp's reign as Reds manager is gradually nearing its conclusion, and it still seems surreal that the German won't be playing a part in whom the club bring in as new signings this summer. It is imperative that Michael Edwards, Richard Hughes and everyone associated with transfers nails the club's business, in order to ensure that Klopp's exit is as seamless as it can possibly be.

Liverpool's new men in charge have reportedly made a move to sign highly-rated young Shakhtar Donetsk attacking midfielder Georgiy Sudakov, but they will have to pay around £85m to get the attacking midfielder and face competition from several other 'big six' clubs.

Georgiy Sudakov for Shakhtar Donetsk.

Nottingham Forest defender Murillo is another player who has emerged as a potential target for the Reds in the coming months, having come up against Klopp's side in the Premier League at the beginning of the month, winning two tackles and three out of four ground duels, according to Sofascore.

Borussia Dortmnd ace Donyell Malen is another possible option, should Liverpool eyeing further attacking reinforcements, and he could even be viewed as a replacement for Luis Diaz, following recent reports linking the Colombian with a move away from Anfield at the end of the season.

Liverpool make contact for "special" Real Madrid star

According to a fresh claim from Sport [via Sport Witness], Liverpool have made contact with Real Madrid over a move for Rodrygo this summer. The Reds are believed to be "closely monitoring" the Brazilian, with Premier League rivals Arsenal also in the mix.

It is going to be extremely difficult to sign him, however, considering how highly he is thought of at Madrid, but there still seems to be hope from the Merseysiders that they could entice him to Anfield.

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo.

Rodrygo could be a sensational signing by Liverpool if they managed to persuade Madrid to sell him, but that could be wishful thinking, considering what a prized asset he is at the Santiago Bernabeu currently. This season, the 23-year-old has scored eight goals and registered five assists in La Liga, while manager Carlo Ancelotti has waxed lyrical over him, saying: "He is a special striker, he can play in all positions. He is fast, smart and effective one on one. The learning is over. He is a Real Madrid player for all purposes."

Rodrygo could even be seen as the perfect long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah, with the Egyptian icon turning 32 later this year, and long-term planning so important at Anfield.

As mentioned, a move feels unlikely, but assuming Kylian Mbappe joins Madrid this summer, competition for places will become even greater, making it harder for Rodrygo to be a definite starter. Should that happen, his head could be turned by a fresh challenge.

Emery can replace Rogers with Aston Villa’s "quality" £60k-p/w dynamo

Aston Villa are about to embark on the final furlong of what could turn out to be one of their most successful Premier League seasons.

Unai Emery currently has his side sitting in fourth position in the league table, having a genuine chance of securing Champions League football for next season.

Unai Emery

The Spaniard won’t just be targeting a top-four finish in the league either, as the club are into the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League following a stunning 4-0 win over Ajax in the previous round.

The international break is over with the fixtures coming thick and fast, meaning Emery will have to utilise the full capabilities of his squad over the coming weeks.

Coming up against an ever-improving Wolverhampton Wanderers side will test Villa to the limit and every player will need to be at their best in order to secure all three points.

Aston Villa team news

The main absence from the starting XI will be John McGinn. The Scot was sent off following a rash challenge on Tottenham Hotspur's Destiny Udogie as Villa eventually succumbed to a 4-0 defeat, having since served the first of his three-game ban in the recent draw with West Ham United.

The likes of Tyrone Mings, Boubacar Kamara and Emiliano Buendia are all still unavailable, while Matty Cash is the latest name to be ruled out of the Wolves clash.

John McGinn

"Bad news with Matty Cash,” Emery said during his pre-match press conference. “After playing with his national team, he came back with a small injury. He’s not available for tomorrow.

“For Saturday he is not available – maybe two or three weeks more.

“Jacob Ramsey is progressing well and we are going to train this afternoon and we will decide if he can help us or not tomorrow.”

Emery could switch things up from their last outing against the Hammers in that 1-1 draw, with one new signing being dropped to the bench…

Morgan Rogers’ statistics for Aston Villa

Morgan Rogers impressed for Middlesbrough during the first half of the season, scoring seven goals along with registering nine assists, which clearly caught Emery’s attention.

So far, Rogers has featured six times for the Midlands side without registering a goal involvement, although he has shone in spells since making the move to Villa.

He was deployed on the left side of the midfield during the first leg against Ajax and delivered a mature display. During his 63 minutes on the field, the youngster attempted six dribbles, succeeding with five of them while also winning 70% of his ground duels during the tie.

The performance proved that he was ready to make the step-up while showing that the occasion or opponent didn’t faze him at all.

Against West Ham a couple of weeks ago, Rogers was once again trusted in the starting XI, but his display wasn’t as effective as Emery would have liked.

He did succeed with two of his three dribble attempts, but completed just 77% of his passes, won just a third of his ground duels and committed four fouls.

Morgan Rogers

The former Boro gem was subbed off after 63 minutes as he was replaced by Nicolo Zaniolo, and he should be given the nod this evening against the Old Gold.

Nicolo Zaniolo’s performance against West Ham in numbers

The Italian has endured a mixed spell since arriving on loan from Galatasaray last summer, but he came to the rescue against the Irons.

He also attempted as many dribble attempts during his cameo as Rogers did, although he succeeded with just one, while Zaniolo won three of his seven ground duels and took 20 touches.

His goal ensured the club shared the spoils and this could give Emery a licence to unleash the 19-cap Italy international this evening instead of Rogers.

Nicolo Zaniolo’s Aston Villa statistics

Zaniolo has made 32 appearances for Villa since joining last summer, yet the former AS Roma starlet has scored just three goals during that spell.

In the Premier League, the 24-year-old has started just seven times, registered 1.1 shots per game, averaged 0.4 key passes per game and recovered 1.4 balls per game.

During the reverse clash against Wolves earlier in the season, Zaniolo came on for the final half an hour and looked lively.

He delivered two crosses into the opposition box, took one shot, and won three of his five ground duels, while also being fouled three times during his cameo appearance.

Another display like this, but from the first whistle, could see the midfielder offer a dangerous attacking threat against the Wolves defence and give Villa their first win over the Old Gold in six attempts.

The £60k-per-week dynamo was called up to represent Italy during their recent international friendlies against Venezuela and Ecuador, starting the latter game.

He started in an attacking midfield role and managed to make one key pass, miss a big chance while taking two shots during the clash, and he was praised by journalist Matt Santangelo following his display, who said:

“Nicolò Zaniolo’s ball carrying and hold up play has been quality tonight. You definitely need someone to play off him, but the physical side of his game has been encouraging.”

If he can carry over his displays for his country into tonight’s tie against Wolves, then they will have an excellent chance at securing all three points.

He has been devoid of confidence in a Villa shirt recently, but his goal against West Ham last time out should hopefully give him a boost.

The final few weeks of the season, depending on how far Villa progress in Europe, could see them playing twice a week until May. This means Emery will have to rotate his squad on a regular basis, giving plenty of fringe players the chance to impress.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Starting tonight, Zaniolo could stake his claim to be a regular in the starting XI if he delivers a solid performance as it could inspire the club to another Premier League victory.

There is no doubt he should be given a chance against the Molineux side to see what he can do from the very start.

Afghanistan ride on Karim Janat's 5 for 11 to level T20I series

Brought into the XI for his first match on tour, the allrounder hit his highest score and had his best-ever bowling returns

The Report by Saurabh Somani16-Nov-2019

Karim Janat celebrates a wicket•AFP

Afghanistan rode on a remarkable performance by Karim Janat to surge to a series-levelling 41-run win against West Indies in the second T20I on Saturday. The 21-year-old Janat, brother of Asghar Afghan, came into the XI for his first match on tour. He replaced left-arm quick Fareed Ahmad, and walked into his 20th T20I with middling stats. With the bat, he had averaged 13 at just over a run a ball. His bowling average was a none-too-hot 31.66 and his economy rate an expensive 8.76. The Janat who turned up at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Saturday bore no resemblance to the man with those numbers. Sent in at No. 3, he hit a freewheeling 26 off 18, his highest T20I score. But it was with the ball that he really tore through, taking Afghanistan’s second-best ever T20I figures with 5 for 11 in four overs.Afghanistan had made what seemed to be a below-par 147 for 7, but thanks to Janat, all West Indies could limp to was 106 for 8, leaving everything to play for in the series decider on Sunday.Afghanistan’s brisk start
Hazratullah Zazai shed the inhibitions that had made him tentative in the first T20I, going for his shots from the start, and got underway with a first-ball six flicked disdainfully over square leg. Zazai looted 16 runs off the opening over bowled by Jason Holder, getting Afghanistan off to a flying start. Both openers fell to Kesrick Williams in the fifth over, robbing Afghanistan of momentum. But Janat, batting at No.3 for the first time in T20Is, kept the run-rate going with some bold strokeplay. He didn’t always connect cleanly, but he went for his shots, which proved to be a street-smart ploy on this particular pitch. He was out to an iffy decision, the ball looking like it would go down leg, but that was a minor blip in a dream day.West Indies mix up the pace
Afghanistan were 41 without loss in four overs. In the next 16 overs, they could get only 106 for 7. The pitch for the second T20I didn’t have as much grass as the adjacent one that had been used for the first match. The first T20I had already shown the value of taking the pace off the ball, and in this game, on a slower surface, it was an even more effective tactic. West Indies sussed that well. Led by Williams, ably supported by Holder (who gave up only seven runs in his last three overs), Keemo Paul and Kieron Pollard, they strangled Afghanistan in the middle. Forced to create their own power with no pace on offer from pitch or bowlers, the batsmen succumbed. Gulbadin Naib’s enterprising 24 off 18 from No. 8 gave them some impetus at the very end, and allowed for a total that could give the bowlers something to defend. In the middle though, from overs 5 to 16, Afghanistan were tied down. The bowlers employed a variety of cutters, back-of-the-hand slower balls, and mixed them up with the rare bouncer or full-pace delivery, to keep the batsmen wrong-footed.Janat destroys West Indies
West Indies began their chase cautiously, but given that the target wasn’t too steep and they had firepower in their batting, they could afford to do that. Where the ploy began backfiring was with the batsmen getting dismissed after having eaten up balls. They had stayed at the crease for a while, without gaining any fluency, and as they played out overs the required rate climbed, forcing them to look for big shots. They couldn’t pull that off on this pitch, against a canny bowler like Janat.Janat began by trapping Shimron Hetmyer lbw, beaten by a pacier one on the sweep. Evin Lewis, the game-changer in the first T20I, seemed to never find the middle of the bat, and was undone by the need to break free of the shackles. Janat continued to mix it up against an increasingly edgy Lewis, until he swatted a top-edge to long-on. Two balls later, Janat got one go across Sherfane Rutherford, who drove loosely with feet planted, as the ball hit the perfect length and moved the perfect amount to kiss the edge. It was his next strike that really broke West Indies’ back, and hopes, as Janat got one to jag wickedly into Pollard and caught him on the crease, weight neither forward nor back, but pad very much in line with the stumps.Janat completed his five-for when he came back in the 18th over with the match all but in the bag, but it was his three-over spell in the middle that dismantled West Indies. Before he came on, they were at a steady, if slowish, 34 for 1 in seven overs. When he had completed his spell, the score read 55 for 5 in 12 overs. At the toss, captain Rashid Khan had explained his decision to bat first as “trying something different”. It was a somewhat surprising decision given dew was expected, and the history of T20 cricket, where the dynamics of utilising resources seem much more efficient when you know how many runs you have to get. Newcastle could sign £60m Botman upgrade in the "new Lillian Thuram"

Newcastle United have been terribly unlucky with their injuries this campaign, with the defensive department the area most affected by the issues.

Goalkeeper Nick Pope has been out of action since December after suffering a shoulder injury during the 1-0 win against Manchester United, replaced by the experienced Martin Dubravka between the sticks in recent months.

However, the centre-back area has been the most depleted after the injury crisis after the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman both suffered ACL blows within the last six weeks.

The duo's time on the sideline allowed for Newcastle-born defender Dan Burn to partner Fabian Schar at the heart of the Magpies' defence, with Burn finally getting the opportunity to feature in his natural position after playing at left-back for the majority of the season.

Eddie Howe's side are in desperate need of reinforcements in this area this summer and could land a brilliant option during the window in the form of one talented youngster who's impressed in Europe in recent months.

Newcastle in the race to sign talented young defender

According to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Newcastle are one of two sides monitoring RB Leipzig centre-back Mohamed Simakan ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Magpies are set to be rivalled by fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur for the Frenchman's signature, with the 23-year-old having a release clause in his current deal in Germany.

The journalist claims that Simakan has a €70m (£60m) clause in his contract and that the youngster is keen to play in England's top flight in the near future.

Simakan would be an upgrade on any of Howe's current centre-back options, as reflected by his stats in the Bundesliga so far during the 2023/24 season.

How Simakan compares to Botman in 2023/24

When comparing the pair's stats so far throughout this campaign, the Leipzig man blows the Dutch centre-back out of the water with his rumoured £60m fee looking to be a potential bargain.

Defensively, the 23-year-old Frenchman has excelled with his tally of 1.2 interceptions per 90, double of Botman's tally, with the current Magpies man only able to register 0.6 per game.

Simakan also has the edge over the 24-year-old in terms of tackles and aerials won per game, as his respective tallies of 2.1 and 2.5 easily clear of the Newcastle centre-back, who can only muster 1.3 and 2.2.

The Leipzig defender, who's been dubbed the "new Lillian Thuram" by scout Jacek Kulig due to his likeness to the French legend, also dominates with the ball at his feet showcasing his calmness on the ball when building from the back.

He's averaged 4.8 progressive passes during 2023/24, a tally that once again is more than two times than that of Botman, with the former Lille defender only producing 2.3 per game.

Simakan isn't scared to dribble with the ball at his feet, as seen from his time in the Bundesliga, progressively carrying the ball 1.3 times a match compared to the Dutchman who has failed to register a single attempt this season.

All things considered, Simakan would be a huge upgrade on Botman, with his ability on and off the ball rare to find in such a young talent.

He would cost a pretty penny at £60m, but he would provide serious quality to the Magpies' defence and potentially be the perfect upgrade or partner for Newcastle's number four.

Nat Sciver celebrates her third ODI hundred•Malaysia Cricket Association

England 327 for 4 (Sciver 100*, Knight 86, Wilson 85*) beat Pakistan 200 (Maharoof 64) by 127 runsNat Sciver cracked an 85-ball century, and Fran Wilson added a quickfire 85 not out from 49 balls, as England eased to a series-sealing 127-run victory over Pakistan in the second women’s ODI in Kuala Lumpur. After winning the toss and batting first on a sweltering day, England suffered an early setback when Danni Wyatt fell to Nida Dar for 6 in the second over of the match.Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont regrouped with a 61-run stand for the second wicket, before Beaumont was the second to go, caught by Diana Baig off Nashra Sandhu for 21.But thereafter, England took total control of the contest, as Sciver joined Knight in an 84-run stand for the third wicket, bringing up the 150 in the 29h over before Knight was run out for 86 from 100 balls.Amy Jones chipped in with 17 from 22 balls, but it was the arrival of Wilson that kicked the innings into another gear, as she and Sciver climbed into the final 14.1 overs of the innings with an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 146.Wilson struck eight fours and three sixes in a career-best innings, while Sciver reached her third ODI hundred from the penultimate ball of the innings, as England closed on 327 for 4.Chasing that total was never going to be a realistic prospect for Pakistan, who lost wickets at regular intervals before being bowled out for 200 in the 45th over. The captain Bismah Maroof made a brisk 64 from 65 balls, and Nahida Khan made 40 from 43. But England’s wickets were shared around, with Anya Shrubsole, Sarah Glenn, Sophie Ecclestone and Knight all claiming two apiece.”I was really happy to reach three figures, from a selfish point of view, but it was just nice to take the team to a big total,” said Sciver.”Fran batted so well when she came in and she really helped us accelerate towards 300 and beyond – it was a lot of fun batting with her and she played excellently.”It was a shame Heather didn’t get to her landmark because she batted so well and it would have been a lovely way for her to celebrate getting to 100 caps.”Pakistan have been quite testing, they were hard to get away at points today and they were solid with the bat so we’re happy to have gone 2-0 up and won the series.”
