A partida terminou no 0 a 0.

Prontamente, Tiepo fez a defesa.

O goleiro do Verdão defendeu.

O goleiro do Alvinegro defendeu. Sem outros perigos, a partida terminou zerada.

Aston Villa signing “class” star would make Wolves fans “lose their minds”

Aston Villa have been warned that they could cause a revolt at Wolves if they are able to pull off one signing this summer.

Challenge on for Champions League football

After what has proved a disastrous week in Europe for English sides, it is almost certain that one of Tottenham and Aston Villa will miss out on Champions League football next season.

It had widely been assumed that the Premier League would receive an extra Champions League spot for the new format, but after Real Madrid and Bayern Munich qualified for the Champions League semi-finals ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal, that spot could now go elsewhere.

Aston Villa represent tempting offer for £34m star similar to Hakimi

The Villans are reportedly interested in a summer swoop for the impressive full-back.

ByDan Emery Apr 17, 2024

It means that Unai Emery's side need a strong end to the season to ensure that they, and not Tottenham, occupy the final Champions League spot come the end of the campaign. Off the pitch though, rumours of summer business are already well in motion.

Aston Villa in hunt for Wolves star

One of the players that Aston Villa have been linked with in recent weeks is Wolves defender Max Kilman, who has impressed once more this season under Gary O'Neil.

The centre-back has made 32 appearances so far this season, scoring twice and helping Wolves into midtable, attracting interest from Aston Villa in the process.

He has previously been dubbed a future England international by Football presenter Jacqui Oatley, who dubbed the Wolves man "pure class" on X.

Kilman is also on the wishlist of Manchester United, and Wolves have previously turned down a £30m bid from Napoli for his services, but financial fair play could see him sold this summer in order to balance the books, according to reports. But that cannot be to Villa.

Max Kilman celebrates

Sky Sports pundit Dan Bardell has warned that Wolves fans would "lose their minds" should Kilman make the midlands switch to Villa Park, but fortunately for the Molinuex faithful he also admitted that a move felt unlikely this summer.

"Wolves, for the Financial Fair Play problems that they have, if they sold their captain to Villa, Wolves fans would absolutely lose their minds and I don’t see that position being a priority at the moment. When Tyrone Mings is back, they’re going to be well-stocked at centre-back back so I don’t see that one happening," he explained to Aston Villa News.

Kilman is an interesting player. If Wolves need to shift players he would be a player that would go for high value but I don’t really see him being at Villa, that’s not a move that I envisage happening.

Villa are also teetering on the edge when it comes to financial fair play, and England's aforementioned failure to land a fifth Champions League spot means that they could find themselves outside of the competition that they spent so long expecting to be in this season.

That fate will need to be settled before they can even contemplate any summer activity. With a wealth of centre-backs already on the books and left-footed option Tyrone Mings set to return from injury next season, a move for Kilman may not be needed.

Mark Wood's grin says it all for a bowler loving life

Ultimate team man turns his back on injury woes and you rather hope there’s a few more Tests left in this quick yet

Fast bowling is a tough business. A tough, serious business. Think of Gus Fraser, trudging back to his mark with a face as long as Livery Street. Or Jimmy Anderson, scowling his way through another spell. And who can blame them? Invariably fast bowlers have spines held together by plates and screws, toe nails that come off in their socks and blisters as large as a side of bacon. They’re kept going by a diet of physio and pain killers. Their future is full of hip operations and micro-fracture surgery. But, at almost every moment of this Port Elizabeth Test, Mark Wood has had a smile on his face. Before his overs, he’s run up to the umpire to give him his hat or jumper, much in the way you see excitable children act when they start playing cricket. And between deliveries, he’s thrown the ball up in the air to give himself catches, much in the way you see excitable children act when they start playing cricket. Often, in delivery, his commitment is such that he hurls himself off his feet. And ahead of play, he ran over to the traditional musicians who were entertaining the crowd to have a go on their drums. All while wearing a broad grin. Much in the way you see excitable children…And you can understand why. For Wood has spent more of his career in rehab than a Hollywood star. He’s undergone numerous operations on his ankle and, since his last competitive match – on July 14 – had knee surgery and endured a lengthy period on the sidelines due to a serious side strain.ALSO READ: England surge towards victory on Root four-wicket haulIt’s worth looking back on the moment that injury was incurred. It was the World Cup final. The 45th over of the New Zealand innings. Wood, who had defied all the predictions to play in 10 games in the tournament, was mid-way through his final over when he felt sharp pain in his side. He knew, in that instant, he was in trouble. He could have stopped bowling. Had he done so, he might still have had an outside chance of returning before the end of the Ashes. But the game was in the balance and he didn’t want to let his team, his captain, down. He completed his spell. The last two deliveries, with no thought to his own welfare, were bouncers. The pain worsened considerably.”I had three balls left,” he recalls. “And every ball I bowled it got worse. I knew it was pretty bad. But it’s a World Cup final and I didn’t want to limp off after 9.3 overs. I spoke to Eoin Morgan about going through those three balls, but I knew I was out of the Ashes.”So Wood will never take moments like these – representing his country, tearing in and unleashing whole spells of 90 mph deliveries – for granted. He knows such experiences are precious and fleeting. He knows it could be over at any moment.”I’m just trying to enjoy it,” he says. “I’m just trying to have fun, take it all in and play with a smile on my face. It’s been a lot of fun.”I love it. I’ve waited quite a while to come back. July was the last game I played and, with the way my body has been, it’s something you can’t take it for granted. This could be my last game.”I’m not just hoying [throwing] out clichés. That’s genuinely how it is. I have to take it as it comes because that’s the nature of how I bowl. Tomorrow I could fall over for the 54th time in the game and strain my ankle or something like that.”I’m just about patched together. I’m wrapped up like a mummy on my left leg. Something is going to hurt eventually but it’s part and parcel of being a fast bowler. I’m not a natural. I’m not 6ft 5in and built like a tank, so I have to give everything I’ve got to try and rev it up.”Now there will be those, reading this piece, who look at the scorecard and wonder what all the fuss is about. And it is true, at this stage, Wood only has two wickets. And while he has also seen a chance or two put down, struck five sixes in a brisk 42 that helped set up the declaration and plucked a fine catch out of the air – “I made a bit of a meal of that,” he says bashfully – the fact is there have been other, far more eye-catching individual performances in this match. But in a team game like this, we cannot be judging the value of players’ contributions simply by the scorecard. The truth is, Wood has bowled at a pace – somewhere around 94 mph at his quickest – that has brought a new edge to this England attack. Some of the South Africa batsmen – notably Zubayr Hamza – have looked horribly unsettled by him. And, while there is no way of proving it, you suspect Wood has, in both innings, helped create chances at the other end as rattled batsmen struggle to retain their composure. You suspect his value is far greater than the number of wickets he has so far taken.”I like the word ‘assists’,” he says, while trying to explain his contribution. “I think it’s good to bowl in a partnership.”The wicket of Dean Elgar will have been especially rewarding, though. Elgar is probably, at this stage, the best player of pace in the South Africa side. So to set him up with a spell of short balls and then send his off-stump sent cartwheeling with a rare full delivery that may have left him a fraction provided more tangible rewards than the slaps on the back from appreciative teammates.”Every fast bowler wants to see a stump going flying,” he says. “And that was a great feeling. And one that really helped with my confidence. If you don’t get a wicket you’re thinking ‘I need to try and prove a point; I need to show my value and keep my place in the team.'”Dean Elgar was bowled by Mark Wood•Stu Forster/Getty Images

You could argue – and you may well be right – that Wood overdid the short ball here. In the second innings, 41 of the 66 deliveries he has so far bowled have been short or back of a length. Only two have been fuller than a length. For a man capable of swinging the ball – both conventionally and reverse – that seems like a bit of a waste. He’s better than playing the part of a simple enforcer.Incidentally, that final spell was six overs. It’s too long for a bowler of Wood’s pace and fragility. Mitchell Johnson, at his very best, rarely bowled a spell longer than three or four overs. England could learn from that. But those were the orders and he’s a team man. “You do what is best for the team,” he says. “I noticed my pace dropped off a little at the end. But when you’re bowling bouncers all the time, it takes it out of you.”Wood’s career stats are, in the grand scheme of things, fairly unremarkable. This is his 14th Test; he has one five-for and an average of 36.81. But we should probably distinguish Wood’s statistics before he lengthened his run-up and afterwards. Before that change, there was a lot of talk about his pace, but not much evidence. He routinely bowled in the mid-80s and he routinely underwent ankle surgery. But since the end of 2018, when he made the decision to lengthen that run, he has bowled with consistent pace and hostility. The only other Test he featured in since then included his career-best performance – he was player of the match after dismantling West Indies in St Lucia – while his World Cup spells included the fastest delivery of the tournament and meant that only four men claimed more wickets. Just as importantly, the longer run appears to have taken a bit of stress off his body. But for that side strain – the knee was more of a clean-up job than anything especially serious – his body (and most crucially, his ankle) has stood up pretty well to the exertions. For that reason, there is hope he could appear in the fourth Test next week. And with Jofra Archer now bowling again in training, there is a possibility that England could field both their fast bowlers on a Johannesburg pitch which has, at times, been rated among the fastest in the world.”I’d love to play there,” Wood says. “I’ve never actually played a match there, but I trained there once and the ball flew through. I’d love to have a go there.”The word “love” comes up a lot in Wood’s conversations at present. He says he “loved” his batting, “loved” how well Ollie Pope batted and Dom Bess bowled and “loves” being back in the team and “doing something I really enjoy”.The result is that, if the weather relents – “I thought Africa was the sunniest place in the world,” Wood mused, “but I come here and it’s just like Durham,” – England have a great chance of achieving back-to-back victories in South Africa for the first time since January 1957. To put that in perspective, Winston Churchill’s second spell as Prime Minister had just finished. It’s a significant achievement. So was the gamble to keep bowling in the World Cup worth it?”Absolutely,” he says with feeling. “I’d take being a World Cup winner even if I didn’t play another game of Test cricket. I would not swap that for the world. I’ve always got that to look back on. It was the pinnacle of my career.”He’s probably right. But to see him throw himself into his work again at Test level, to know how hard it’s been to get back to this level, to appreciate how much better England’s attack looks when he is part of it and to witness his uninhibited enthusiasm… you rather hope there are a few more Tests left in Mark Wood yet.

Ratcliffe could sack Ten Hag & hire Man Utd a “tactical genius”

Since the Sir Alex Ferguson era, every manager of Manchester United has failed to return the club to its glory days.

Unfortunately, it seems that Erik ten Hag will be the next boss to face the sack, having coached the Red Devils to a current seventh-place position in the Premier League with a goal difference of -1.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag watches on.

Although it’s been reported that the Dutchman won’t part ways with the club until the end of the season, Sir Jim Ratcliffe will likely start his rebuild with a new boss at the helm.

But who are the options? Well, one is particularly eye-catching having proven himself to be a serial winner.

Ratcliffe has drawn up a manager list for Man United

According to a claim from Ben Jacobs via GiveMeSport, Zinedine Zidane could feature on Man Utd's manager list this summer.

Jacobs said: "Zinedine Zidane will almost certainly be on the succession planning list. Being on the succession planning list doesn't necessarily mean you'll get any contact or get offered the job. It just means that you're part of a collection of names that are there to explore. Then, if a change is made, that list will be whittled down.”

This was confirmed following a report from French outlet L’Equipe via GiveMeSport, who mentioned that the former Real Madrid boss would favour a move to Old Trafford over Bayern Munich.

Zidane is reportedly keeping an eye on the current situation at the Red Devils, as well as the circumstances at Bayern.

Zidane’s managerial career so far

Being widely regarded as one of the best players of all time is such a prestigious honour in itself, but to also go on to become an elite manager is a feat very few achieve.

Zidane started his career in the coaching department as an assistant manager for Real Madrid back in 2013, but just a year later, he took on the role as Real Madrid Castilla boss.

zinedine-zidane-manager-tottenham-hotspur

However, it wasn’t until January 2016 that he really developed as a coach, becoming the boss of Madrid and boasting one of the most impressive records around.

Over 149 matches, Zidane’s Madrid won an unbelievable 105 matches, losing just 16 times, while also winning three consecutive Champions League titles from 2015/16 to 2017/18, which proves he’s a master of the competition.

The 51-year-old is the true definition of a winner, which is exactly the type of manager missing at United right now.

A reason why the Frenchman may be preferred over other managers' is simply due to the fact that his preferred system and formation is a 4-3-3, which fits the current United squad like a glove.

zinedine-zidane-champions-league-tottenham-hotspur

The most important aspect to the success of Los Blancos under Zidane was the midfield trio of Casemiro, Luka Modric, and Toni Kroos, and a midfield trio of Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes, and a new defensive midfielder could replicate that, due to the two ball-playing eights and a destroyer behind them.

However, on top of being “tactical genius,” as called by pundit Steve McManaman, Zidane is also a brilliant man-manager who knows how to get the best out of every individual on the field, which is an aspect Ten Hag has struggled with in particular this season, with the Jadon Sancho situation rather epitomising that.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

Furthermore, the mentality of not accepting anything below the supposed standard of Man United has slipped away under Ten Hag, and the hiring of Zidane would certainly put an end to that. He knows exactly what it means to be the boss at a top European club.

Despite the fact that the three-time Champions League-winning coach has been out of action since 2021, he would instantly improve the Red Devils if he were to join, at least ensuring that the foundations for success are laid out, which they currently aren’t under the Dutch boss, as shown displayed against Coventry City on Sunday.

Close your eyes to reality, and imagine this South Africa Dream Team

But for Kolpaks and injury, South Africa could and should have fought fire with fire at the Wanderers

When you imagine a dream South African attack to operate at the Wanderers, the home of fast bowling since Australian pitches died, who do you picture running in? Is it Dane Paterson? Or Dwaine Pretorius? Or Beuran Hendricks?Let’s be honest, given what we’ve seen from this Test, it’s probably none of them. Which begs the question: What, without Kolpak, without injury, without anything, would South Africa’s dream attack be right now?For this exercise, we’re not harking back to the glory days of Allan Donald or Makhaya Ntini or even the more recent firestarters like Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel. We’re only going to consider players who are active on the current circuit and see if we can come up with a better bowling group than the one playing in this match. We’ll start with the pick of the existing lot, Anrich Nortje, who has tirelessly and single-handedly ensured South Africa have salvaged some pride from this series. Nortje has all the qualities of an old-fashioned South African quick: he is fast and aggressive, his stock ball is short and he has stamina. Nortje has been the seam-bowler putting in the heaviest workloads with more overs than any of his colleagues, and he is also having the most success. His 18 wickets include those that have come late in an innings or the day, like the ones of Ollie Pope and Jos Buttler – both caught behind playing nothing shots to back-of-a-length balls – which created a small opening for South Africa. Nortje left England on 160 for 6. Had the lead not already ballooned to 377, it would have been a handy position for the hosts to be in. All he needs is someone else in the team to put their hand up at the same time.Imagine if Kagiso Rabada had not been suspended for this match and could have bowled alongside Nortje. South Africa would have been able to apply pressure through pace from both ends, the way England did. That said, Rabada is an automatic pick for the dream attack, even if he hasn’t come up with ways to channel his emotions when celebrating better. Hopefully with a more potent pack around him, Rabada’s frustrations will not build to the point where he needs to release them as recklessly as he did at St George’s Park. The question now is who will open the bowling with Rabada. Nortje is one option but it would be difficult to look past Kyle Abbott, who has taken 182 wickets in three seasons in the County Championship, at an average of 18.62. Abbott’s ability to move the ball, through the air and off the seam, would offer a Vernon Philander-esque partner to Rabada. This series, SuperSport Park aside, has not been the best example of how Rabada and Philander can work in tandem, but we can still consider the theory of it. On one end, batsmen would be rushed by Rabada, on the other, contained and tested by Philander and/or Abbott. It would mean they would face contrasting challenges as their innings began and on a Wanderers pitch, it would make it difficult for them to settle. It’s also likely that Abbott would not be as much of a green-track bully as Philander has been accused of, because he has the skillset for other surfaces. Abbott could enhance South Africa’s attack significantly and if there is a way to bring him back, it should be on top of acting director of cricket, Graeme Smith’s to-do list.Kyle Abbott walks off after taking nine wickets•Getty Images

A similar argument could be made for the inclusion of Simon Harmer, whose 212 wickets in three county seasons have come at an average of 20.25. Harmer would present some interesting problems for the selectors, who have anointed Keshav Maharaj the first-choice spinner, with good reason. Until his omission at the Wanderers, Maharaj had done South Africa’s dirty work throughout this series, and before, often holding up an end for an entire day. He is disciplined and occasionally dangerous, which is exactly how South Africa like their spinners. If Harmer was to return immediately, given some of the things he has said about the South African system, it’s more likely he would be an understudy with Maharaj worthy of his retention in this dream attack. That leaves space for an allrounder, a position to which South Africa have committed themselves by blooding Dwaine Pretorius in this series and including Andile Phehlukwayo in the squad. Neither of them offers anything more than medium-pace so South Africa may want to cast the net wider. Wiaan Mulder is the option that would turn the quality attack we have now into a dream. Mulder is young and talented with a first-class batting average that sits just under 40 and a first-class bowling average that is a shave over 23. He is a genuine two-in-one-player and, at 21, has time on his side. Why isn’t he in the squad now, you may ask?ALSO READ: Philander suffers hamstring tear, nine balls into final Test inningsWell, he has spent the last six weeks recovering from a lower-back stress fracture and is due to bowl for the first time tomorrow. If there’s one warning that comes with Mulder, it’s the injury one. He has already struggled with an ankle problem and an Achilles injury and would need to be monitored and managed if he was to play regularly. So there we have our dream attack: Rabada, Abbott, Nortje, Mulder and Maharaj. But we still need some back-ups. If fit, Lungi Ngidi would immediately come into consideration for his pace and bounce. So would Duanne Olivier, another Kolpak player who left when he was excelling. Olivier was the leading wicket-taker against Pakistan early last year where he used barrages of short balls to set South Africa up for a series win. Olivier’s departure opened the door for Nortje, so you could argue that he should be considered ahead of Nortje, but we’ll send him to the back of the queue if he returns. Other names that would come into contention are Lutho Sipamla, who is fourth on the first-class wickets charts and Gerald Coetzee, South Africa’s tearaway at the Under-19 World Cup.So when you are faced with the situation in South African cricket right now, and you’re struggling to find anything in what looks like an empty cupboard, come back to this little exercise. Picture this dream attack on this Wanderers pitch and think about how differently things could have been. And then wake up.
