Hutchinson & £20m+ star join: Ipswich’s dream XI after the transfer window

Ipswich Town fans still won't quite believe their team is competing in the Premier League ahead of next season until the first ball is kicked by a Tractor Boys shirt on the opening day, with Arne Slot's Liverpool now Ipswich's first top-flight opponent back in the promised land.

The reality of playing amongst English football's top dogs will surely start to feel more real after this, as Kieran McKenna is tasked with the almighty mission of keeping the Suffolk club afloat after achieving back-to-back promotions from the dug-out, having walked away from Manchester United to become a beloved figure at Portman Road.

There must have been a temptation this summer on McKenna's end to return back to the Theatre of Dreams, with rumours circulating that he was in the running to replace Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford hot seat, but he remains as Ipswich manager for now, hungry to succeed with his gung-ho team making the step-up, even in such a tricky division.

Adding in quality here and there all over the pitch could be what gives the Tractor Boys the edge in a possible nail-biting fight against the relegation drop-zone, needing new recruits to sprinkle the side with even more talent, to try and adjust to the demands of the Premier League.

With that in mind, here is what Ipswich's dream starting XI could look like come August, with a new goalkeeper signed between the sticks and the return of a familiar face to Suffolk…

1 GK – Carl Rushworth

Ipswich could be set to sign a new goalkeeper ahead of their journey up to the Premier League, with current number one shot-stopper Vaclav Hladky commenting on his up-in-the-air situation at Portman Road recently, as he nears the end of his contract.

Carl Rushworth seems to be the 'keeper Ipswich are eyeing up as the 33-year-old's replacement, who does fit into McKenna's style of play, with a calm and measured nature about him playing out from the back when starring in the EFL.

The Brighton and Hove Albion man kept ten clean sheets in the league last campaign out on loan with Swansea City too, with the up-and-coming 22-year-old now on Ipswich's agenda.

2 RB – Ben Johnson

West Ham United defender Ben Johnson.

Another defensive addition this summer could see rumoured target Ben Johnson leave West Ham United as a free agent to join the ranks at Portman Road, with this being viewed as a shrewd capture if it goes through.

Johnson could end up displacing his right-back competition in both Axel Tuanzebe and Harry Clarke if this move is finalised, having amassed 109 appearances for the Hammers as a versatile and dependable figure at the back, with 69 of those coming in the Premier League.

3 CB – Nat Phillips

Liverpool defender Nat Phillips.

Shipping 57 goals in the Championship last season might have raised the alarm bells that Ipswich needed to sign new defensive recruits ahead of the challenge of the top division, with Nat Phillips another name on a long list rumoured to move to Portman Road in the centre-back spots.

Phillips would be able to give the Ipswich back four some much-needed calmness for the level, alongside Johnson's potential arrival, with 19 Premier League games under his belt for the Reds to date, alongside amazingly playing seven times in the Champions League during his time at Anfield.

4 CB – Luke Woolfenden

As much as Cameron Burgess could be sacrificed for the arrival of a new face at centre-back, Luke Woolfenden might well keep his place in the heart of defence, on the contrary.

Woolfenden will be champing at the bit to test himself in the top division, having had to really work hard to make a first-team spot at Portman Road his own over the last couple of seasons, before coming into his own under McKenna's guidance.

Last campaign, the Ipswich number six helped his side keep 14 clean sheets from his 41 league appearances, with a hope now he can manage the pressure of coming up against world-class attackers on a regular basis in the league above.

5 LB – Leif Davis

Leif Davis won't have been worried about his position in the Ipswich first-team whatsoever ahead of the 24/25 campaign, knowing that his staggering 21 assists last season, despite playing as a left-back, meant his spot was concrete.

The 24-year-old will be eager to impress further owing to his lack of minutes at the level when he was still just a youngster attempting to make it at Leeds United, only handed two chances overall when struggling in West Yorkshire.

6 CM – Massimo Luongo

Massimo Luongo is another who found himself stuck on the periphery when he was on the books at a Premier League club early into his fledging career, only gifted one senior Spurs start, before making a name for himself away from North London.

The Australia international only missed three games all Championship season long during Ipswich's promotion success and is unlikely to find himself out of McKenna's plans for the testing campaign to come.

7 CM – Sam Morsy

Although there were rampant rumours previously that Ipswich could look to strengthen in their holding midfield positions, with Ben Sheaf one notable name floating about from Coventry City, McKenna could keep his faith in the experienced head of Sam Morsy now instead.

The Tractor Boys captain was equally a first-team regular last campaign, amassing an impressive seven assists from the middle of the park from 44 overall contests.

8 RM – Omari Hutchinson

Another new signing that would be music to the ears of die-hard Ipswich supporters would be the return of Omari Hutchinson, who would bomb down the right flank for the Tractor Boys in the Premier League if a move happens.

Equally capable of playing down the left channel as well, on top of playing in Conor Chaplin's spot just behind the lone striker, it feels like a no-brainer to try and get the Chelsea youngster back, although the £30m price-tag branded about for his signature could be a major stumbling block.

Yet, with 17 goal contributions in all competitions for the promotion-winners still fresh whilst on loan, Ipswich could be tempted to splash the cash and make a statement.

9 CAM – Conor Chaplin

Conor Chaplin has been with Ipswich since their League One days, like much of the current first-team personnel, rising up all the way to the Premier League with the Suffolk club in the process.

The former Barnsley man has been an animal for Ipswich the past couple of successful seasons, with his 13 goals and nine assists last season crucial to Ipswich achieving automatic promotion.

It remains to be seen whether he can handle the gigantic step-up in quality, but he more than deserves a crack at it after grinding away in the EFL for most of his career, to then now play in the elite division.

10 LM – Nathan Broadhead

Nathan Broadhead will also want to impress in the top flight, especially when coming up against his former employers in Everton, where he was given extremely limited chances in the first team, before being let go.

The Merseyside outfit's loss has ended up becoming Ipswich's major gain, however, with the electric Tractor Boys number 33 picking up 13 goals last time out – matching Chaplin's goal total – from 38 second-tier contests.

Rahul Dravid bats for IPL expansion: 'Fantastic to see Under-19 boys establish themselves'

He believes the tournament has been the major reason behind the rising standard of India’s white-ball cricket

Andrew Miller13-Nov-20205:25

‘It’ll be great for cricket if T20s become an Olympic sport’ – Dravid

Rahul Dravid believes that the IPL is ripe for expansion to nine teams in the near future, in order to provide an extra outlet for the surge of young Indian talent that the competition has helped to unleash since its inception in 2008.Dravid, who currently heads the National Cricket Academy, helped mentor a clutch of this year’s IPL debutants – including Rajasthan Royals’ Yashasvi Jaiswal and Kartik Tyagi, and Kings XI Punjab’s Ravi Bishnoi – when he oversaw India’s run to the final of the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand earlier this year. And while he is adamant that the overall standard of India’s white-ball cricket has never been higher, he’s sure there’s room for even more young players to be given the chance to learn from the best on the IPL stage – as shown by the sustained success of Mumbai Indians, whose unrivalled blend of youth and experience has propelled them to five titles in the past eight seasons.”Purely from a talent perspective, I think we’re ready for an expansion,” Dravid said during a Rajasthan Royals book launch. “It’s been fantastic to see so many of those young Under-19 boys come on and establish themselves, not only for their state teams but also in the IPL. But many more are actually not getting opportunities. They are sitting outside in a lot of these teams, because the quality of the cricket is so good and there are so many good and experienced players.”This is why Mumbai Indians have been so good,” he added. “What they’ve done really well over the last four or five years is to maintain a strong core of really high-quality players and mix that up with some really good young talents.Ishan Kishan pounces on a short ball•BCCI

“They were able to spot Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya at a young age, they’ve brought in Rahul Chahar and backed Ishan Kishan, and while you wouldn’t exactly call Suryakumar Yadav a young player because he’s been around for a while, a large part of their success is down to a very good scouting structure.”On a national level, Dravid believes that India’s pathways for junior cricketers have been exponentially improved by the IPL effect, with the trickle-down effect of the tournament’s huge cash injections leading to improved facilities at the grassroots level, and heightened incentives and opportunities for young players to commit to a financial future in the game.”Now the IPL is not only about the top level,” Dravid said. “In the past in Indian cricket, when young players were looking for opportunities, the only place they got them from was from the state associations. They needed to play for their Ranji Trophy team in their own state, but today because of the IPL, you can be from Karnataka and you can play for Mumbai.”Dravid cited the breakthrough season enjoyed by Royals’ Rahul Tewatia as proof of how the IPL’s onset has transformed the opportunities for the country’s up-and-coming players. As a young spinner at Haryana, Tewatia was behind the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal, Amit Mishra and Jayant Yadav in the state pecking order, and played just seven Ranji Trophy games in as many seasons. He became one of this season’s cult figures after his remarkable match-winning feat against the Kings XI Punjab in Sharjah.”In the past, [Tewatia] would not have been able to show his talent because there wouldn’t have a stage to do it,” Dravid said. “But that’s the other great positive of the IPL. You have eight franchises looking out for the best players, so it’s like having eight extra pairs of eyes watching out for talent all over the country, which is exactly why you’re seeing so many of these young players come through.”It’s already opened the floodgates for people from small towns and cities who watch the IPL on television,” he added. “Coaching is not a barrier to anyone because you get to listen to the best experts on television, and because of the money of the IPL, there are facilities in small towns in India which you would not have heard of a decade ago.”India does have a very strong junior system, but it’s not easy to give them these experiences just in a domestic competition. The IPL gives these talents the opportunity to express them on the world stage. As much as we can do as coaches to help them in their journeys, the opportunity to bat with Virat Kohli and to learn from AB de Villiers is priceless and will help them grow as cricket players and as people as well.”It’s no coincidence that, if you look at India’s white-ball cricket since the IPL started in 2008, we’ve won one World Cup, we’ve been in the semi-finals of two others. We won a Champions Trophy, we’ve been in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cups. In the last decade, India’s white-ball cricket has been the best ever in our history, and a lot of that is because of the experiences these young players are getting.”

Armed with a stronger seam attack, Sri Lanka look to beat the odds again

On their last tour to SA, they became the first Asian side to win a Test series in the country

Andrew Fidel Fernando25-Dec-2020Big pictureAt face value, do Sri Lanka really have a chance? Let’s look at the facts against them:They’ve not played international cricket since March. Most squad members have spent three weeks playing T20 cricket, and are now expected to make the substantial switch into Test mode. They’ve had no warm-up match due to Covid-19 complications. They are missing Angelo Mathews – the most experienced member of their batting order. Sri Lanka batsmen have always struggled at Centurion. And yet, when they won 2-0 in South Africa last year, Sri Lanka had faced even steeper odds, their fast bowling stocks having been decimated by injury, while a captain had just been sacked, and a coach was fearing for his job (which he would lose, several months later). This time, not only do they feel they have a stronger seam attack, but also have a batting group with more experience, and a coach who knows South African conditions intimately, in Mickey Arthur.South Africa, however, are much more fearsome in the Highveld – where both Tests will be played – than they are on the coasts, particularly against South Asian opponents. They also have players in form. Anrich Nortje was rapid in the T20s against England, as well as in the IPL. This was in T20s, but the man is clearly in good rhythm, and the prospects of him hitting high speeds at Centurion will worry some Sri Lanka batsmen. The likes of Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen and Keshav Maharaj are coming off excellent performances in the four-day competition (Markram has 75, 113, 149, 121 in his four most-recent innings), which is leads to another point – they have been playing long-form cricket, where Sri Lanka have not had competitive multi-day matches to play for at least five months.South Africa clearly start as favourites, but as Sri Lanka’s captain Dimuth Karunaratne has asserted, a lot depends on how well each team bats after their long Test hiatus. There have been some seriously low team totals in each of the last four matches between these teams. If that is the case again, Sri Lanka will feel they have a chance.Related

The closest Sri Lanka have ever come, was when they lost by just three wickets, way back in 2002. The most-recent Centurion match between these teams was in 2011 – Sri Lanka losing by an innings and 81.Players to watchQuinton de Kock will captain South Africa in a Test for the first time, but already, he has said he sees himself only as a caretaker leader. He leads the team in all three formats now, and also keeps wickets in all three. The usual question here: how will captaining over five days impact his batting and his keeping? (His batting has been good of late – his average up at 45.9 since the start of 2019.) And will he lead well? De Kock is generally a cricketer of few words, but this new job may need him to find his voice. Can de Kock juggle with captaincy, batting and keeping?•Getty Images

Kusal Perera played one of the all-time great innings to wrench victory from defeat last year in Durban, but aside from this one blinding knock, there hasn’t been a lot to his Test career. Eighteen Tests in, he has an average of 31.13, which is passable only for an allrounder. And he has batted everywhere from No. 1 to No. 8, without appearing in more than eight innings in any one position. Despite his having produced Sri Lanka’s greatest-ever innings from No. 5 on the last tour here, his team now looks set to ask him to open the innings, to cover for the injured Oshada Fernando. If he is to find a more stable place in the XI, Perera desperately needs to settle into a more consistent phase in his career.Pitch and conditionsSouth Africa need to balance creating conditions that will suit their seamers, and making sure it’s not impossible for their batsmen to find form. So it will be green, but not too green, and we can expect pace, bounce and swing but not the kind that saw Sri Lanka crushed at the Wanderers in 2017. SuperSport Park is usually a bat- first pitch; if you can get through the first hour or so, it very good for batting on the most of the first three days. De Kock said he expects it to take some turn later on.It’s been raining a fair bit on the Highveld in the build-up and afternoon thunderstorms are forecast from Sunday. Otherwise, it will be warm with temperatures touching 30.Team newsIt’s Oshada’s hamstring injury that will keep him out of the first Test, and him being unavailable means there may be a spot in the batting order for Dasun Shanaka, who not only brings dynamism to the lower middle order, but also can send down a few overs of serviceable seam bowling.Sri Lanka are wondering whether to go in with an out-and-out spinner in Lasith Embuldeniya, or to hedge their bets and go with Wanindu Hasaranga, who adds value with his batting. There is one other serious injury worry too. Suranga Lakmal picked up a hamstring niggle in the approach to the match, and may need to be replaced, perhaps with Kasun Rajitha.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Dimuth Karunaratne (capt.), 2 Kusal Perera, 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Dhananjaya de Silva, 6 Dasun Shanaka, 7 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 8 Suranga Lakmal/Kasun Rajitha, 9 Lasith Embuldeniya, 10 Vishwa Fernando, 11 Lahiru KumaraWith Kagiso Rabada out through a groin injury, right-arm seam bowler Glenton Stuurman may get a debut. But that’s only if he gets over a niggle. An injury doubt also hangs over Lungi Ngidi. Lutho Sipamla and Migael Pretorius would seem to be the next in line to play, if Ngidi or Stuurman (or both) aren’t fit in time.South Africa (probable): 1 Aiden Markram, 2 Dean Elgar, 3 Rassie van der Dussen, 4 Faf du Plessis, 5 Temba Bavuma, 6 Quinton de Kock (capt. & wk), 7 Dwaine Pretorius, 8 Anrich Nortje, 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Glenton Stuurman, 11 Lungi NgidiStats and trivia In the two Tests Perera has played since the last South Africa series – of which he was Player of the Series – he has averaged six and has a top score of 23. Perera, however, has been unavailable for several Sri Lanka Tests through injury. On Sri Lanka’s last tour here, de Kock was South Africa’s best batsman, hitting 80, 55, 86 and 1 in his four innings. South Africa have only ever lost two of the 25 Tests they’ve played at Centurion – against England in 2000, and Australia in 2014. Even overall (counting Tests in Sri Lanka as well), Sri Lanka have a poor win-loss record against South Africa, having won only nine and lost 14 of their 29 Tests.Quotes”There is a lot of grass on the surface at the moment, and I think the more there is, the easier it will be for us. When you have less of an up-and-down type pitch, you just have to survive that first couple of hours, and you give yourself a chance to put a decent score – something like 300 – on the board.”Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne“I don’t want to think ahead too much. I’m trying to keep it as basic as possible and as simple as possible. It is something we are aware of, the last time they were here, they did beat us, so its definitely something we want to rectify. Hopefully we can do it by being as simple as possible.”

– exaltou o atacante.

A situação do Avaí é tranquila.

Leeds selling "monster" ace would be a bigger blow than losing Summerville

Leeds United may have known that their failure to secure promotion back to the Premier League would leave them at risk of losing some of their best players.

The Whites were beaten 1-0 by Southampton at Wembley in the play-off final in May and are now preparing for a second season in the Championship.

Daniel Farke has already had to watch on as one of his star men completed a move away from Elland Road, with Archie Gray having signed for Tottenham Hotspur in a £40m deal.

Joe Rodon signed on a permanent deal for £10m, after spending last term on loan at the club, but they still lost one of their regular starters at right-back.

Leeds forwards likely to move on

According to Football Insider, three Leeds players could be set to follow Gray out of the door at Elland Road before the summer transfer window slams shut.

The report claims that the Whites are 'expected' to lose three of their stars, with Wilfried Gnonto, Georginio Rutter, and Crysencio Summerville said to be 'likely' to be sold.

It adds that the club could accept 'big offers' for all three of them and that money would be reinvested back into the squad if any of them depart.

This comes after Football Insider recently reported that Brighton & Hove Albion are preparing a second bid for Rutter, after their initial £30m offer was turned down by Leeds.

Losing the French "monster", as he was described by Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie, would be an even bigger blow than the departure of Summerville.

Why losing Georginio Rutter would be a bigger blow

Leeds selling Rutter to Brighton, or any other interested party, would be more harmful to Farke's side than losing the Dutchman would be to how central he is to the way the German wants to set the team up.

The 22-year-old magician is, essentially, the heartbeat of the attack and everything flows through him, due to his fantastic ability to link up play and create chances for his teammates.

Summerville was able to thrive, with 19 goals and nine assists in the league, because of Rutter's ability to consistently feed him the ball in dangerous areas.

As you can see in the table above, the former Bundesliga ace provided more than the Dutch sensation in build-up play, with more passes into the final third, more progressive passes, more assists, and more take-ons.

Meanwhile, Summerville received far more progressive passes and this illustrates the point that Rutter was the one progressing play forward to allow the winger, and the other attackers in the side, plenty of chances to showcase their quality.

Therefore, the 22-year-old Dutchman may not be able to influence matches and provide as many goals and assists as he did last term without the help of the 6 foot magician, who orchestrated the attack.

Leeds could ease Gray blow by signing a star who "loves a scrap"

The Whites lost their talented academy graduate to the Premier League earlier this month.

ByDan Emery Jul 8, 2024

This is why selling Rutter, who created 22 'big chances' and registered 15 assists in the Championship, would be an even bigger blow than an exit for Summerville, as his departure would have an impact on the rest of the team, rather than one specific position.

Leeds star’s exit gathering momentum as personal terms now sent

Having already lost Archie Gray to Tottenham Hotspur this summer, Leeds United could now lose another star player with personal terms reportedly sent his way.

Leeds transfer news

After suffering defeat against Southampton in the Championship play-off final and missing out on promotion to the Premier League as a result, Leeds were always likely to lose players this summer. And that's proved to be exactly the case.

So far, the Whites have lost several players either on free deals or in big-money moves such as Gray's to Spurs. The academy product, who is still just 18 years old, left his boyhood club behind for a Premier League chance.

On the incomings front, meanwhile, things have been fairly quiet at Elland Road since Leeds signed Joe Rodon from Spurs in a permanent deal and welcomed Salford goalkeeper Alex Cairns. With the beginning of the season just a month away too, it looks as though the Yorkshire club are only likely to suffer more bad news before the transfer window slams shut.

According to Football Insider, French side Rennes have now sent personal terms to Glen Kamara as his Leeds exit "gathers momentum".

Rennes sporting director Frédéric Massara publicly acknowledged Kamara in a recent interview, saying via the Yorkshire Evening Press: "He [Kamara] is a Leeds player, a good player, definitely interesting. But of course, we are interested in lots of players, some of which have not yet been revealed and could arrive, even quickly."

Farke could forget about Gnonto with Leeds swoop for "ridiculous" star

The Whites were linked with a potential swoop for the winger earlier this summer.

ByDan Emery Jul 10, 2024

The Finland international only arrived in Yorkshire last summer but could now be on the move just one year later as he seeks a return to top flight football.

Why Leeds must keep "excellent" Kamara

After losing Gray and a player who would have eventually moved into midfield to play a vital role, Kamara is more important than ever alongside Ethan Ampadu at Elland Road. The former Rangers star is blessed with a wealth of experience and Leeds must ensure that he stays put for at least one more season.

Daniel Farke is certainly a fan of the midfielder too, saying via Leeds Live last season: "Excellent. I think it was important because he had little pre-season because there was so many rumours and talks with Rangers that he didn't get much game time, was tough for him.

"Obviously when you come into a new environment and you’ve not played competitive games for such a long period, you need a few weeks in order to be then really prepared. I think he had also a bit of game time for Finland, I think this helped him, you could see him growing over the last two weeks or so in training."

Starting 33 of Leeds' 46 Championship games last season, Kamara can step up even more for Farke in the coming campaign, but must first resist the temptation of a summer switch.

But when he was forced to retire hurt with what appeared to be an abdominal strain, Kings lost substantial momentum. They lost Lahiru Udara and Daniel Bell-Drummond in consecutive overs, and the run rate slowed as new batsmen set about establishing themselves through the middle overs. By the end of the 11th, the required rate had climbed to 11.44.Ashan Priyanjan, though, kept Kings ticking through that middle period, picking up frequent legside boundaries to keep the asking rate manageable. But with Russell having been rested for this game, and Angelo Mathews in woeful batting form this tournament, Kings still needed someone to provide the big final push.Enter Qais at No.7 at the beginning of the 14th over. He played himself in, taking only five runs off his first six deliveries, before hitting two confident consecutive fours off Malinda Pushpakumara in the 16th over. Kings needed 30 off the last 14 balls, so it looked like it was going down to the wire, but Qais made it a cakewalk. He would go on hit five sixes off the seven balls that followed, making sure he never lost the strike. It was devastating hitting. Lahiru Kumara was launched back into the sightscreen, and next over, Anwar Ali was brutalised – a six over long off, and two in the wide long-on/cow corner region coming off his next three deliveries. There was a yorker dot-ball in between, but the next ball was back-of-a-length, and that disappeared a distance beyond the deep square leg fence to end the match. Kings won with seven balls to spare. That six also took Qais to his first ever 50 in senior competitive cricket. It had come off 22 balls.Stars of the dayQais had also been outstanding with the ball, earlier, taking two wickets for 23 runs, as Viiking racked up what seemed like an imposing 203 for 3. Priyanjan, the batsman who kept Kings in the hunt until Qais’ finishing fireworks, made 47 not out off 24. For Viiking, Niroshan Dickwella and Angelo Perera had both struck half-centuries, the latter playing the more impressive innings, making 74 off 41.Where does this leave the teams? This final game of the LPL league stage didn’t really matter much. Viiking and Kings are both through. Kings, though, will now top the table and play Galle Gladiators who sneaked into the semi-final with just two victories in the league stage. That semi-final is the first one up, on Sunday. Viiking will play Jaffna Stallions in the second semi, on Monday.

No final do jogo fomos procurar a vitória e conseguimos.
