Rangers could drop Lawrence by signing "sensationally intelligent" star

Glasgow Rangers picked up their first win of the 2024/25 Scottish Premiership campaign with a 2-1 win over Motherwell at Hampden Park on Saturday.

The Light Blues, who are temporarily playing away from Ibrox, dominated the game – with 68% possession and 19 efforts on goal – and came away with all three points in the end.

It was a much-needed performance and result after the drab 0-0 draw with Hearts on the opening day of the season, as Philippe Clement's side showed that they can consistently create chances in a game.

Cyriel Dessers opened the scoring for the Scottish giants but an unfortunate debut own goal from experienced central defender Robin Propper made it 1-1.

Cyriel Dessers

Summer signing Vaclav Cerny, who is on a season-long loan from Wolfsburg, secured the win with a stunning strike from the edge of the box, curling the ball into the far corner with his left foot.

Whilst it was a fairly impressive performance from Rangers and one that should give supporters more hope than they had after the opening day, there were some players who continued to struggle – including attacking midfielder Tom Lawrence.

Tom Lawrence's struggles for Rangers

The Wales international has benefitted from Todd Cantwell's continued absence from the team after his transfer request and Ianis Hagi being sent to play for the B team, as he has been the only senior number ten option.

Unfortunately, he has not made the most of the opportunities that the situation has provided him with, as the 30-year-old dud struggled again on Saturday.

Lawrence started in the attacking midfield role behind Dessers, with Scott Wright and Cerny either side of him, and was hauled off by Clement after just 56 minutes.

As you can see in the table above, the Welsh lightweight endured a difficult afternoon at Hampden with pretty much no impact in the final third, whilst he also lost the majority of his duels out of possession.

Lawrence has started all three of the club's games so far this season and is yet to provide a single goal or assist, with just one chance created in two starts in the Premiership.

Tom Lawrence

His lack of impact at the top end of the pitch should not come as a huge surprise to Rangers or Clement, though, based on his form during the 2023/24 campaign.

The former Derby County playmaker ended the season with three goals and three assists in 32 matches in all competitions for the club, which shows that he did not provide a regular threat as either a scorer or a creator of goals.

With the transfer window still open until the end of the month, Rangers must dip into the market to sign a new attacking midfield option in order to ditch Lawrence from the starting XI.

Rangers interested in Premier League prodigy

In fact, the Light Blues were recently linked with an interest in signing a player in that position from a team in the Premier League this summer.

Football Scotland reported that the Gers are keen on pursuing a deal to snap up Chelsea's young attacking midfielder Leo Castledine on a season-long loan.

The outlet claimed that Rangers have already been in contact with Enzo Maresca's side to discuss a potential move for the academy talent before the window slams shut.

It was stated that a potential sticking point in negotiations, however, has been that the Scottish giants would like to have an option to make the deal permanent next summer, whilst the English giants would prefer it to be a straight loan and for him to return to Stamford Bridge next year.

Football Scotland added that Aberdeen have also registered an interest in the 18-year-old whiz, whilst clubs in the English Championship are eyeing up the Blues youngster.

This means that the Light Blues could face plenty of competition to land his signature, particularly if the other interested clubs are willing to do a straight loan, rather than one with an option-to-buy.

If Nils Koppen and Clement can get a deal over the line before the end of the window, though, then it could allow Lawrence to be ditched from the team.

Why Rangers should sign Leo Castledine

It would be a gamble by the Premiership giants, as the midfielder has only made one senior appearance in his career to date, but his form at academy level suggests that the potential is there for him to be a terrific addition to the side.

Rangers took a similar risk when they signed Malik Tillman on loan from Bayern Munich, after he had made seven first-team appearances, in the summer of 2022, and the USA international went on to plunder 12 goals and five assists in 43 matches for the club.

He is a prime example of why it can be beneficial to sign a player and give them their first chance of playing regular football at senior level, which is why Castledine could be an excellent addition.

Leo Castledine for Chelsea.

The teenage sensation has racked up 102 appearances for Chelsea at U18 and U21 level combined over the years and contributed with 36 goals and 16 assists.

In the 2023/24 campaign, Castledine produced ten goals and nine assists in 18 Premier League 2 outings for his side's U21 team, which suggests that he has already outgrown academy football at the age of 18.

The teenage whiz, who was hailed as "sensationally intelligent" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, is a versatile midfielder, who can play as a number eight, out wide, and as a number ten, who can consistently contribute with goals and assists for his side.

It is now down to him to prove himself at first-team level on a consistent basis and Rangers, as they did for Tillman, could provide him with that platform to shine.

Rangers could sign £5m machine who is more clinical than Dessers

Philippe Clement must sign another striker before the end of the transfer window…

ByRoss Kilvington Aug 6, 2024

If he could then enjoy a breakthrough season of scoring and assisting goals on a regular basis, then Clement could easily drop the underperforming Lawrence back down to the bench.

Former UAE captain Mohammad Naveed vows to fight to clear his name

Says his only mistake was not to report a corrupt approach, and he was never involved in “these things”

Peter Della Penna16-Mar-2021

Mohammad Naveed, the former UAE captain, has declared his intention to begin a fight to restore his reputation after the ICC handed down an eight-year ban to both Naveed, 33, and his team-mate Shaiman Anwar, 42, for breaching the ICC’s anti-corruption code. Naveed will be 40 by the time the ban, which is back-dated to his provisional suspension date of October 16, 2019, is due to end.It effectively means his career as a professional cricketer is over unless the ban is overturned. Naveed took to Twitter shortly after the sentence was announced on Tuesday to swing back at the ICC for the penalty handed out to him.”Played my Cricket with sincerity from an associate player reached rank 10 cz I always performed for my passion and respect,” Naveed tweeted. “Just one mistake not reported corrupt approach but never involved in these things. Witnesses and all people from these things said m [sic] not involved.”So my request to all. I will fight for my right and honor don’t want leave Cricket with bad words. According to all things m [sic] not involved and Management asked me to accept and get 3 year ban how can banned 8 years sorry but as attack bowler will fight.”In reply to a tweet from ICC ACU coordinator of investigations Steve Richardson linking to the ICC’s announcement of the eight-year ban, Naveed replied, “You have any proof against me please show.” Naveed responded to Paul Radley of the , who has worked as a beat reporter covering the UAE national team for more than a decade.”I want open media tribunal,” Naveed wrote. “If they have proof just show on media openly I am a fighter as I always bowl in pressure will face every thing. Don’t want to leave my cricket with bad and dirty way. All other players in the world are getting 2 year 3 year ban after accepting everything even I havnt [sic] done bad.”Anwar also tweeted for the first time in close to a year in Tuesday night. Like Naveed, he also sought to criticize the ICC’s decision despite the evidence against him.”It’s totally unfair decision we are getting punishment on those which are not happened,” Anwar wrote. “As associated players imagine who can offer us a big money.”

In a recent interview with ESPNcricinfo, ICC general manager of the integrity unit Alex Marshall said that Naveed and Anwar were vulnerable to corrupt influence due to a multitude of factors.”Corruptors will look at what they believe to be the motivation of the people they are approaching,” Marshall told ESPNcricinfo. “So if the corruptors think that someone’s sole motivation is money, whatever country they’re in is just to earn money and they have no particular allegiance and they’re playing simply for money, then certainly the corruptors think that person is more susceptible than someone who is not just playing.”Amongst the Associates, there are plenty of countries where the players are amateurs, it’s costing them money to play for their country but they’re doing it because they’re very proud and they love the sport. If you look at it from the corruptors point of view, and I keep going back to the UAE players because there are some cases still coming through the system, it’s quite clear that the corruptors felt that they were motivated by money, some of them, and they felt it was worth approaching them.”What makes the top Associates so attractive to the corruptors is the relatively low cricket income that people from Nepal, the UAE, Oman, some of the African cricket nations…they are being paid very little if anything at all. If you look at the bottom end of the Full Members, Zimbabwe would be a good example. They are amongst the poorest of the Full Member nations and we see players there being offered $30,000 to commit corrupt conduct. We see players in the Associates getting offered $10,000. We see players in European club matches getting offered 3,000 Euros. So that’s the sort of scale of the offers. $10,000 to someone in some of these places is an awful lot of money. $30,000 in Zimbabwe would probably buy you a house.”According to testimony within the ICC tribunal document, the two UAE players were offered a total of 1.6 million UAE Dirhams ($435,000), to underperform – Naveed to give away runs while bowling, Anwar to score slowly while batting – in three separate matches at the 2019 T20 World Cup Qualifier. The sum offered to them would be up to 10 times their annual earnings on a UAE central contract.”They [corruptors] wanted to control the opening batting, the opening bowling and the captain. So that is the absolute ideal for them,” Marshall told ESPNcricinfo. “The opening bats both score slowly. Those small number of corrupt bookies take unlimited bets on how many runs will be scored in the opening phase of the match or the powerplay, and they’ll also take unlimited bets on the number of runs conceded by those bowlers because if they manage to corrupt the bowlers, they know they’re gonna concede more than 12 or 15 runs in an over.””If there is interest in the match, interest in the profiles of the teams, there will be a decent betting market. They then look for which of those players might be susceptible. In the UAE example, Naveed and Shaiman Anwar fit into that very well. They were late in their career. They’re about to retire. They were seen as worth approaching and they were playing in matches that have got a decent profile and a reasonable betting volume.”

Cricket West Indies board election postponed to April 11 due to 'lack of quorum'

Representatives from the Guyana and the Barbados cricket boards failed to show up at the virtual AGM

Representatives from two out of six territorial boards that were supposed to vote in the election were no-shows•WICB Media

In a dramatic turn of events, the Cricket West Indies (CWI) board elections have been adjourned till April 11 after representatives from the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) and the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) failed to show up for the virtual annual general meeting. CWI subsequently said that the AGM had to be postponed as per the constitution due to the “lack of a quorum”.For quorum, at least nine out of 12 voters had to be present, but with the GCB and BCA representatives not showing up, the CWI had to call off the election. In a media release on Sunday, CWI said representatives from the rest of the four territorial boards – the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA), Leeward Islands Cricket Board (LICB), Trinidad & Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB), Windwards Islands Cricket Board (WICB) – were present.”The meeting therefore could not proceed to business as the CWI Articles of Association stipulate that nine (9) representatives of the Full Members need to be present in person to constitute a quorum,” the CWI statement said. “Despite having previously authorized their representatives to attend, when the roll was called there were no representatives present from the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) nor the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA).”Related

Ricky Skerritt set to be elected for second term as Cricket West Indies president

'Pandemic forced us to do more with even less' – CWI president Skerritt

The Articles of Association provide that if there is no quorum within 30 minutes from the time appointed for the meeting (in this case, 10am Eastern Caribbean time), it shall stand adjourned to the next business day or to such other time and place as the Board of Directors may determine, and that at the adjourned meeting no other business may be transacted.Attempts to reach the representatives from the BCA and GCB were unsuccessful, with the meeting eventually getting adjourned at 10.50am.Sunday’s elections were meant to elect the president and the vice-president with two candidates in fray. Incumbent Ricky Skerritt and his deputy Kishore Shallow were contesting for a second two-year term against the pair of Anand Sanasie and Calvin Hope. Incidentally, Sanasie is the GCB secretary while Hope is the BCA vice-president, and both boards had nominated the pair for the CWI board elections.ESPNcricinfo understands that both Sanasie and Hope were not present at the AGM but later Hope attended the emergency CWI meeting where the decision to postpone the elections was taken. It is understood that Hope opposed the new date of the elections, too, but was outvoted. Each of the six territorial boards have two votes each, which can be cast by two representatives nominated by each of these boards. Both Skerrit and Shallow were nominated by the TTCB and the LICB. The pair also had support of WICB, where Shallow is board president. As per the CWI constitution, the voting process is normally a show of hands unless any of the board members wants a secret ballot. It is understood that the CWI corporate secretary had created an electronic version of a ballot, as this was the first time the elections were being held virtually. In 2019, Skerritt had defeated Dave Cameron, who had been the president for six years, through a secret ballot with an 8-4 margin. Why did Sanasie and Hope not turn up?
Skerritt and Shallow received a boost on Sunday when, along with the TTCB and the WICB, the JCA’s vice-president Donovan Bennett said that his board would be backing the pair. Incidentally, in the 2019 election the JCA had nominated Cameron.According to Bennett, the JCA’s choice to back Skerritt was “unanimous” as he was impressive during his presentation of his manifesto recently. “When he made his presentation to the [JCA] board, we were surprised as to what he had achieved, it was a lot more than what we had expected taking into consideration the amount of time he had and restrictions that had impeded a lot of stuff that he wanted to do and so based on that, we thought that he deserved another term in office,” Bennett told the .The fate of the CWI elections carried a lot of importance for Sanasie because the GCB polls were also scheduled for March 29. However, it could not be confirmed if that was the key reason for the no-show.

Bid incoming: Everton line up move for "remarkable" Calvert-Lewin upgrade

Everton fell to a disappointing 3-0 defeat in their opening Premier League game against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday, with thousands of empty seats visible before the final whistle.

The Toffees, who are entering their final season at Goodison Park, failed to create any clear-cut opportunities, only registering a single effort on target during the entire encounter.

Sean Dyche’s side have already strengthened their attacking unit this summer, signing the likes of Iliman Ndiaye and Jesper Lindstrom, but the duo weren’t included from the start, with the lack of threat in front of goal evident for large parts in the defeat.

With less than two weeks remaining in the transfer market, the club may need to conduct more business if they are to improve their attacking output, helping them pull further clear of any looming relegation threat this season.

The club are making inroads to sign one talent who’s been on their radar all summer long, boosting their chances of ending the torrid luck in front of goal.

Everton preparing move for attacker

According to Football Insider, Everton are preparing a loan move to sign Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah before the transfer deadline on August 30th.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

The 25-year-old, who has constantly been linked with a move to Merseyside this summer, looks set to leave the Emirates in a bid to gain more regular first-team minutes.

He’s also been subject to interest from Marseille and Bournemouth, but after the pair opted to sign alternative targets, the Toffees could have a free run at a move to sign the striker.

It’s unclear whether Mikel Arteta’s side would be prepared to allow the Englishman to depart North London on a temporary basis before the end of the window, but it would be a move that would dramatically improve Dyche’s options in the final third.

Why Nketiah would be better than Calvert-Lewin

Despite the flurry of transfer activity at Everton this summer, striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin still remains the club’s number-one option at the top end of the pitch.

However, he produced a disappointing opening display of the new season yesterday, failing to register a single shot whilst also losing possession six times despite only managing 20 touches in his 76-minute display.

However, he’s been subject to interest from Manchester United and Newcastle United this summer, with his future still up in the air – potentially still leaving Goodison before the end of the window.

It wouldn’t be the end of the world if the Toffees let the 27-year-old leave the club, with Nketiah posting numerous figures last season that blow the current Everton man out of the water.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

The “remarkable” Arsenal ace, as described by journalist James Olley, may have registered fewer combined goals and assists last campaign, but managed a higher ratio of contributions per 90 after featuring for fewer minutes in 2023/24.

Nketiah also managed a better goal per shot-on-target rate than his fellow countryman, showcasing that he’s a more clinical option in front of goal than the target man – handing Dyche with a greater chance of rectifying their abysmal goalscoring record.

The club are in desperate need of a new talisman after their dismal record in front of goal, as demonstrated during yesterday’s defeat.

Nketiah would be an excellent option for the club, helping the Toffees produce more frequent opportunities in front of goal, and providing an upgrade on Calvert-Lewin in the process.

Sydney Sixers BBL chief exits despite back-to-back titles

Cricket New South Wales has announced a significant restructuring after an extensive review

Jodie Hawkins, the general manager of Sydney Sixers, has exited Cricket New South Wales (CNSW) as part of a restructure that removes the positions of club general managers, despite overseeing the Sixers to victories in each of the past two men’s tournaments. In measures shared with staff this week, the chief executive Lee Germon outlined the restructure approved by the NSW board and its chairman John Knox, and the fact that Hawkins would leave the organisation after declining an alternative role, understood to be in communications. The general manager of the Sydney Thunder, Chris Botherway, will stay on after accepting another job with NSW as general manager of customer experience. Hawkins declined to comment.Germon told ESPNcricinfo that the state would be hiring two new independent list managers to oversee recruitment for the Sixers and the Thunder and report into the heads of men’s and women’s cricket Michael Klinger and Leah Poulton. He insisted that NSW had not shut the door on female leadership within the organisation, even though the new four-person executive team directly reporting to Germon is all-male.”Both Jodie and Chris were offered roles here. Chris has gone into a new role, Jodie has decided to leave us, and I totally respect that decision,” Germon said. “Jodie has been here for every BBL over 10 years and I think whoever does end up getting Jodie is going to be very well off, because she’s a leader who’s been developing through our organisation.”We’ve got some very good female leaders coming through. If people say there’s no-one in those roles, look at Leah Poulton as head of female cricket, a role below the executive level. We’ve got the boss in charge of the people side, Bernadette Chehine, some wonderful leaders coming through. We’ve just appointed three of our best up and coming female coaches and given them internships, Sarah Aley, Hannah Trethewy and Lisa Griffith.Germon on CNSW organisation review

“It’s important I make it clear this has been an 18 to 24 month process. It started with a review of our cricket performance and it was all based on us wanting to be world class and that led to a few changes.

“The structure is less important than how we work together. So we’re going down from eight departments to four squads, and teams within those squads working together to achieve what we want to.

“This is not based on saving money, saving costs, this is done from a position of strength to really catapult us forward in terms of how we deliver cricket. It’s certainly not in response to any certain activity or action or event, it’s something that’s been going for a while and its vision is that we want to be a world leading organisation, not just a cricket one.

“We are very cognisant of developing leaders throughout our organisation and very cognisant of developing female leaders because we want that diversity of thought. We spoke to Jodie about another role here and I think she’s made the right decision to really spread her wings and move on because she has been here for a while. But I would say we want to keep developing our female leaders.”A new NSW executive team reporting directly to Germon comprises Chris Muldoon as head of strategy, governance and insights, Greg Mail as head of cricket performance, Michael Dalton as chief financial officer and a new hire, Anton Brown, as head of customer experience. Brown’s past experience included a long stint with Virgin Active. The organisational changes have raised eyebrows across Australian cricket, particularly after Cricket Victoria’s multiple BBL restructure attempts since the boards and chief executives of the Melbourne Stars and Renegades were dispensed with in 2019. CV recently elected to a return to a structure where two club general managers would report directly to the state’s chief executive, Andrew Ingleton.Germon underlined the fact that the state had concluded, as the result of an 18-month organisational review, that the commercial and “customer facing” areas of the BBL clubs needed to work more closely together, likening them to the two competing drivers within the same Formula One team. This, he argued, was already happening in terms of player recruitment.”I think the BBL GM role has evolved, certainly within CNSW over those four years. Last year our cricket performance team, as part of the performance review, had much greater contribution alongside the GMs around the playing lists and the players,” Germon said. “Ultimately the final sign-off of players contracted sat with our cricket performance team and not with the GMs of the BBL clubs.”They’re competing with one another on the field, but they’re not competing off the field. Both clubs are part of CNSW and that’s the essence of this redesign. Our commercial team joined with the two BBL teams last year, our commercial team sells for both clubs off the field. But on the field absolutely we need that competitive rivalry and tension. I liken it to the Formula One scenario.”While the Sixers men’s side has claimed each of the past two BBL titles, the women’s team has faded from an early dominance of the WBBL to a failure even to make the tournament finals of the most recent edition. Sydney Thunder won this season’s WBBL title.”The on-field performance of the Sixers women didn’t come into the restructure, but having said that, there’s been a thorough review of the Thunder and Sixers WBBL campaigns and that’s where Leah has driven that review and the way forward,” Germon said. “The performance of the WBBL or BBL sides on the field, yes we’re cognisant of it, but this is driven by maximising the off-field benefits of the two clubs.”We need the respective list managers in place because that’s important to the autonomy of the clubs and the competitiveness which we’re well aware of, and also the integrity nature of it.”

David Ornstein: Newcastle in contact to sign Chelsea star instead of Guehi

Newcastle United have made contact with Chelsea as they eye potential alternatives to Marc Guehi, according to a new report.

The Magpies have had to be very careful in this summer transfer window as the club adheres to the financial fair play rules. That has meant that while the club has brought in several new players, they have also had to move players on.

Eddie Howe is desperate to bolster his defence during the current transfer window

Newcastle have so far brought in five new players, one of whom is Lewis Hall, who was at the club last season on loan from Chelsea and has now joined the Magpies on a permanent basis. Other transfers the club has completed have seen them bring in John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos to bolster their goalkeeping options, and they have also added William Osula to their attack and Lloyd Kelly to their defence.

But while there is over a week left of this transfer window, Eddie Howe and co remain keen on improving their squad, with England and Crystal Palace defender Guehi a top target for the club.

The Magpies are said to have made four bids for the defender already this summer, with their latest bid being around the £65 million mark. The latest was that the fourth bid was still not enough for Crystal Palace, and the South London side rejected the offer. That most recent bid was inclusive of add-ons, but the structure of the deal has yet to be agreed upon with Palace.

Guehi had an excellent summer, as the centre-back stepped up to the plate as England was without Harry Maguire for Euro 2024, and Guehi performed at a level that made him one of England’s best players. The defender is said to be Howe’s number one target for centre-back, but Newcastle could now be looking at alternative options.

Newcastle turn to Chelsea for Axel Disasi

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Newcastle have stepped up conversations about signing alternative centre-backs to Guehi, with Chelsea’s Axel Disasi of interest to the club.

The update states that the Magpies haven’t given up on signing Guehi, but with Palace wanting around £70 million, the club has started plans to look at other options. The Premier League side is said to have expressed an interest in Disasi and by extension making contact with Chelsea, with the player only moving to Stamford Bridge last summer.

Disasi joined Chelsea from AS Monaco, and the centre-back has gone on to make 44 appearances for the club in all competitions, 31 of which came in the league. He missed Chelsea’s pre-season tour of the USA this summer as he continues his recovery from a hernia operation.

The Frenchman is contracted to Chelsea until the summer of 2029, and the 26-year-old is said to be on a weekly wage of £80,000. As well as looking at Disasi, the Magpies have also sounded out Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba, who is said to be being looked at by several clubs from around Europe this summer.
