Spurs target "sensational" £40m ace who’d help Maddison reach another level

Tottenham Hotspur steadied the ship on Saturday afternoon with a thumping 4-0 win against Everton and, in turn, reminded the rest of the Premier League that at their free-flowing best, they can tear teams to pieces.

However, Ange Postecoglou's side don't play again until Sunday, so, like the rest of the league, their fans have shifted their focus to the transfer window's conclusion.

Thus far, the North Londoners have enjoyed a relatively fruitful summer, bringing in youngsters like Archie Gray and Wilson Odobert alongside established stars like Dominic Solanke, and while many clubs would now kick their feet up happy with their business, Daniel Levy and Co are reportedly keen to do more.

In fact, recent reports have touted a Premier League-proven midfielder for a move to N17 before 11pm tomorrow, a player who'd add some extra quality to the squad and potentially help James Maddison reach another level.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to transfers expert Dean Jones on the latest episode of the Ranks FC Podcast, Tottenham are interested in signing Nottingham Forest ace Morgan Gibbs-White.

Jones revealed that the Lilywhites are looking to bring in a player with "power" to play in the midfield and that Gibbs-White is "someone they like," even if they view him less as a traditional eight and more as someone adept at "breaking out" of midfield.

It's not mentioned how much the £80k-per-week ace could cost Spurs, but reports from earlier in the summer claimed that the Tricky Trees would demand an offer in excess of £40m.

Morgan Gibbs-White celebrates for Nottingham Forest

It could be a complicated transfer to get over the line at this point in the window, but given Gibbs-White's quality, it's one worth pursuing, especially as he could help Maddison reach another level.

Why Gibbs-White would be a great signing for Maddison

Okay, so there are two main reasons that Gibbs-White could potentially help Maddison reach another level this season: his positional versatility and output.

Nottingham Forest player Morgan Gibbs-White

The reason that the latter would help the former Leicester City ace is simply that if the Forest man is playing alongside him, creating chances for the 27-year-old and finishing the chances he creates for him, his goal and assist tallies will naturally improve.

For example, despite playing in a rather lacklustre team last season, the Stafford-born dynamo scored six goals and provided ten assists in 42 appearances, equating to a goal involvement once every 2.62, lending credence to journalist Josh Bunting's description of the player as "sensational."

His versatility, on the other hand, could help the Lilywhites number ten in a couple of ways. The first is that, despite his experience playing in attacking midfield, his ability to play in central midfield and even out wide means he won't cannibalise the minutes his potential new teammate will be expecting this season.

The next reason is that his ability to fill in where needed should hopefully allow him to build up more of a relationship with the regular starters and, in turn, help improve the all-around effectiveness of the side.

Ultimately, while the fee is high, Gibbs-White's attacking ability combined with his positional versatility would see him become a very useful player at Tottenham and someone who could facilitate Maddison, thus helping him reach another level.

-Lógico que vai bater saudade do Parque São Jorge, do estádio, do Corinthians, no estádio vai vier as boas lembranças do Corinthians.

Nick Gubbins, Peter Handscomb give Middlesex a sniff before intoxicating final day ends in draw

Group Two strugglers dig deep after Surrey dangle carrot but chase fizzles out after drizzle

As Robbie White shouldered arms to a Reece Topley short ball, turning the London derby into the seventh rain-affected draw out of eight County Championship fixtures this week, The Oval breathed a collective sigh of relief. Wild shifts in dominance engineered by high-quality internationals and spirited captaincy were not enough to beat the weather but it was to the credit of Nick Gubbins and Peter Handscomb that a definitive result had been a realistic proposition for so much of the final day.Handscomb, averaging a wretched 7.50 for the season as captain, had joined Gubbins with Middlesex 47 for 2, needing another 243 to win in a nominal 45.3 overs and with Topley and Kemar Roach finding some assistance under ominous clouds. With little reason to trust in his defence from the evidence of his summer to date, Handscomb decided to attack and the partnership blossomed after tea: Gubbins flayed boundaries through extra cover, Handscomb whipped through midwicket off his pads, and Surrey threatened to lose their nerve.Gubbins tucked into Amar Virdi – the only spinner used across the four days – by cutting, working, paddle-sweeping and then dumping him into the JM Finn Stand, bringing up his hundred as the floodlights took over by scrambling a single to mid-off. With the field spread, he scampered ones and twos with Handscomb to keep the required rate in check in a stand eventually worth 172 in 33.2 overs, and the equation was 74 to win from 78 balls before a brief stoppage for the lightest of drizzle.Related

Five bum-squeaking overs were lost, effectively sticking a knife into Middlesex’s hopes of a derby double. “The difference between chasing seven an over and 10 an over with the field out is quite a big thing,” Gubbins noted. “They stuck the field out and it was tough work.” Wickets tumbled: Handscomb – who had doubled his run tally for the season – nailed a cut straight to deep point, John Simpson was foxed by a slower ball, and after mowing Roach over wide mid-on, Gubbins holed out to Rory Burns on the extra-cover boundary. When Roach cleaned up Martin Andersson with a cutter to complete his five-for in his final game as a Surrey player, giving him 19 wickets in his last two appearances at The Oval, it looked like he had might even have given them a sniff of an improbable win. But Burns kept the boundary-riders out for too long, and by the time he brought them into the ring, the moment had passed. Fist-bumps followed, and the crowd traipsed home.

There is no greater burden than unfulfilled potential and Gubbins knows that only too well. He was the second-leading run-scorer in Division One when Middlesex charged to the title in 2016 with 1409 runs at 61.26, but has not managed as many as 600 in a Championship season since. Five years ago, a Test cap was only a question of timing, but at 27, he has not been in the England conversation for some time and his first-class average is hovering the wrong side of 35.But this hundred – his second in as many games at The Oval – was an innings of high class, dominated by clips and pulls through straight midwicket and cuts and drives to cover-point. It was the sort of innings that makes the right people take notice, not least with the Sky cameras in town: belligerent against spin, fluent in tempo, and determined against Roach, one of the world’s most prolific Test seamers against left-handers. Gubbins’ contract is up at the end of the season, and if he decides that he wants a home ground with better pitches than Lord’s – “it does make it slightly more enjoyable for us batters when you get on a wicket where you feel like you can score runs if you play well,” he told Sky after – then there would be plenty of prospective suitors.Four of Roach’s five wickets came as Middlesex were desperately searching for quick runs but that did little to diminish the send-off he received from those in the crowd who had stuck it out in the late-evening squall. “It was overcast conditions and the ball was shined up nicely but it just didn’t do anything, so we found it pretty tough,” he said. “Hopefully I can come back again: I’m definitely willing and able – but international duties call.”Indeed, it will be a very different Surrey side against Gloucestershire next week: Sean Abbott has arrived and will come straight in for Roach, while Burns, Ollie Pope and Ben Foakes will be on Test duty and Jason Roy and the Currans are expected to remain unavailable following their post-IPL quarantine. The draw leaves them with an uphill task to finish in the top two and qualify for Division One, while Middlesex look destined for the bottom two despite their spirited efforts this week.

The result was made possible by Surrey’s declaration 25 minutes before lunch, set up by Burns’ unbeaten hundred – his first of the season following six unconverted fifties – and cameos from Hashim Amla and Pope, who hit 19 runs including two slog-swept sixes off a single Tim Murtagh over. The target was 270 in 71 overs, though only 57 were possible on account of the two afternoon stoppages. Mark Stoneman had edged the third ball of the day behind to ensure a statistical oddity (the joint-highest identical first-wicket partnership in both innings of a first-class match, with 135); by the time White left its final ball alone, that seemed like a hazy memory.

Essex's hopes of defending title dented by draw with Nottinghamshire

Brett Hutton bags five before bad light, rain intervene leaving Essex likely to rely on favours to progress

Essex’s hopes of defending the LV= Insurance County Championship and Bob Willis Trophy took a massive hit as they drew with Nottinghamshire at the Cloudfm County Ground, Chelmsford.Notts fast bowler Brett Hutton, on just his second outing of the season, took 5 for 65, including his 200th first-class wicket to bowl Essex out for 210 – and give Notts an 83-run first-innings lead.Ben Slater killed off any potential drama by reaching 19 before bad light, and subsequently rain, ended play at 2.20pm, with the match officially abandoned at 3pm.The stalemate does Essex no help in their attempt to reach Division One- with favours likely needed from elsewhere to stop one of Warwickshire, Durham and Notts from progressing. The top four in Group 1 are now separated by only nine points, although Essex have played a game more than their rivals.Hopes for a positive result had all but been kiboshed by a washed-out second day, along with a pitch which had made scoring slow.Notts needed 10 morning overs to wrap up the Essex first innings, with both sides picking up a bonus point – the former for taking nine wickets and the latter for sliding past 200.After the second new ball was taken an over into the day, Shane Snater and Simon Harmer’s eighth-wicket partnership reached exactly 50 before both fell in consecutive overs.First, Snater was adjudged leg-before to Hutton, and then Harmer was pinned in front by Luke Fletcher – the burly seamer’s 38th wicket of an impressive campaign. The innings concluded as Hutton made Sam Cook’s off stump go kerplunk to complete his five-wicket haul, the 10th of his career. In reply, the visitors had no need nor intention to take any risks as they reached 44 for 2 before umpires Ian Blackwell and Neil Mallender ended proceedings.Peter Siddle provided a probing spell with the new ball and was rewarded with the edge to first slip of Ben Compton.Ben Duckett was bowled around his legs by Snater, having eaten up 50 minutes, with Slater holding things together for an unbeaten 87-ball 19.

Chelsea will regret selling a superstar who’s "similar to Cole Palmer"

One of the players who have taken the Premier League by storm in recent years is Chelsea and England international attacker Cole Palmer. After leaving Manchester City to join the Blues in the final throws of the 2023 summer transfer window, the 22-year-old has gone from strength to strength and become one of the top flight's best players.

Last season was essentially his first full campaign in professional football, after struggling for regular opportunities under Pep Guardiola. It is fair to say that the City academy graduate took his chances with both hands.

In 48 games in all competitions, Palmer scored a whooping 27 goals and grabbed 15 assists. Of those goal involvements, 33 came in the Premier League, in an incredible 33 top-flight games for Chelsea.

These impressive performances from the playmaker meant he was crowned the PFA Young Player of the Year for the 2024 campaign, beating international teammates Bukayo Saka and Kobbie Mainoo to the award.

Already, Palmer is showing why he is so highly regarded in the footballing world. In the Premier League so far this season, he has started like a train. The attacker has only played three games but already has one goal and four assists, which included three in a single game against Wolves.

Given he is one of the hottest prospects in the division right now, there may well be teams searching for their own version of Palmer. However, Chelsea may well have had one right in front of their eyes, whom they recently sold under Todd Boehly's watch.

That player is Omari Hutchinson.

Omari Hutchinson’s stats at Ipswich Town

It was a very impressive coup when Chelsea managed to pull off a deal to sign Hutchinson from Arsenal in July of 2022. The 20-year-old was a highly-rated prospect at Hale End but made the move from North to West London two summers ago.

The Gunners academy player had limited first-team opportunities at Stamford Bridge, however, and in 2023 went on loan to Ipswich Town. His switch to Suffolk saw him join up with the Tractor Boys and Kieran McKenna’s exciting project.

He became a crucial player for the Northern Irishman, as they secured an incredible promotion to the top flight, finishing second in the Championship behind a record-breaking Leicester City side.

In the second tier last season, Hutchinson played 44 times, scoring ten goals and grabbing five assists. His 15 combined goal involvements were the fourth most by any Ipswich player in the league, and he was one of six people to register double figures for goals and assists, as per Sofascore.

Following an incredibly successful loan spell at Portman Road last campaign, the deal was made permanent this summer. Hutchinson joined the Tractor Boys for a fee of just £20m, a small sum given the state of the modern-day transfer market.

How Hutchinson and Palmer are similar

There is no doubt that the Ipswich winger and Palmer are similar types of players. They are both left-footed, versatile attackers who can play right across the frontline, as well as in a number ten role. Football journalist Dean Jones, speaking on The Football Terrace, explained that the Ipswich attacker is “pretty similar to Cole Palmer”.

However, the similarities go further than just the fact they are both left-footed. They are very similar dribblers, as their stats on FBref show. It is worth noting that the stats from the 2023/24 campaign have been used here, rather than the small sample size of the current campaign.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer

Interestingly, Hutchinson actually averages more progressive carries per 90 minutes than Palmer, with 5.98 compared to just 4.02 for the England international. He also completes more successful take-ons per game, with 2.05 for the Ipswich number 20, compared to Palmer’s 1.79.

There is no doubt that Hutchinson is a talented player. The young attacker was also compared to the aforementioned Saka by football.london's Arsenal writer Tom Canton, who said the 20-year-old has “that Saka flair”.

It is perhaps a naive sale from Boehly and the Blues, to lose one of the hottest prospects in academy football in years gone by. Everyone may well spend the next decade looking for the next Palmer, but Chelsea might have already sold the closest thing.

Leeds handed quadruple boost before Cardiff as £35k-p/w ace close to return

Following a disappointing start to the campaign, Leeds United are reportedly set to be handed a major injury boost for their trip to Cardiff City this weekend, with four stars in line to return.

Leeds injury news

Just when it looked as though Daniel Farke’s side were back on course after earning victories over Sheffield Wednesday and Hull City, Farke’s side were brought back down to reality in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Burnley. Two sides in pursuit of Championship promotion, Leeds will be left feeling frustrated once again.

Leeds monitoring "genius" Farke successor who the 49ers are excited about

Leeds are keeping an eye on an exciting young manager should Farke be sacked.

1 ByBrett Worthington Sep 18, 2024

Farke recently spoke on his side’s poor start to the campaign amid criticism over his side’s system, telling reporters via Leeds Live: “The style of football is quite normal. When you are attacking with passes and combinations, a good stricture, clear principles, if you do not win, it’s where is Plan B.

“I never hear the team parking the bus, nobody asks for Plan B. It’s always normal. We are happy if we win. It is not like figure skating. You do not get marks for beautiful posture, it is bringing the ball over the line. If you do not win with our style, or City’s or Marcelo’s, it is called not a proper style and you need to go 4-4-2.”

It’s something that the former Norwich City manager will now be out to prove against Cardiff in a game that will at least feature some much-needed injury boosts. As relayed by Leeds Live, Farke confirmed that as many as four Leeds stars are in line for a return against Cardiff this weekend, with Max Wober, Joe Rodon, Junior Firpo and Joe Rothwell all training and potentially featuring in Wales.

Farke confirmed the news, telling reporters: “Rodon missed two sessions due to some hip problems or glute problems. Firpo struggling with MCL. Manor Solomon with some back problems. Rothwell rolled his ankle. A few concerns, but I am carefully optimistic all of them will be available.

“Biggest question mark behind Manor with his back problems. Max Wober back in training from today, light session. Wait to see how he reacts tomorrow. Late decision.”

Now or never for Wober at Leeds

Arriving from Red Bull Salzburg in January of 2023, earning a reported £35k-a-week in the process, Wober opted to join Borussia Monchengladbach on loan instead of battling in the Championship last time out. Now, he is back and must make an impact.

Still just 26 years old, Wober could still play a vital part as a player who has the quality to play in the top flight, as shown on loan at Gladbach in the Bundesliga. Carlton Palmer even believes that the central defender could play a “key part” under Farke this season, perhaps starting with Cardiff this weekend.

His return should be a major boost for Farke, as will be the potential returns of Firpo, Rodon and Rothwell. Aiming to get back to winning ways, Leeds must turn their poor early season form around.

Sob o comando do técnico Arthur Elias, as meninas venceram o Campeonato Brasileiro e a Copa Libertadores.
