World Cup Super League points at stake as Bangladesh seek whitewash

Captain Tamim Iqbal’s knee injury remains a concern for Bangladesh

Big pictureZimbabwe would be hoping they can take away at least 10 points from the ODI series against Bangladesh, while the visitors wouldn’t want to slip up like they did against Sri Lanka in May. This is a critical time in the ICC ODI Super League for both teams with bigger challenges coming up later in the year.Shakib Al Hasan has so far been Bangladesh’s MVP, with a five-wicket haul in the first ODI and an unbeaten 96 in the second. He adapted excellently on Sunday, particularly during the last 20 overs when Bangladesh looked out of the contest.Shakib’s innings, however, papered over the broadening cracks in Bangladesh’s batting order. Tamim Iqbal’s knee injury is a concern while Liton Das, who scored a century in the first ODI, has only recently found some runs in white-ball cricket. Mohammad Mithun and Mosaddek Hossain have been sub-par this year, exacerbating Bangladesh’s problems without Mushfiqur Rahim in the middle order. Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mohammad Saifuddin had to put out the fire in both ODIs in Harare. At least one part of Bangladesh’s plan – to have one of the top-order batters playing for the majority of the innings – is working.Zimbabwe doesn’t have too many experienced players like Shakib or Mahmudullah to bail them out repeatedly, but they would still feel encouraged by how Wessley Madhevere performed during Sunday’s ODI. Sent in the middle order, Madhevere batted with freedom, going after Taskin Ahmed, while also tackling spin well. He has now scored a fifty in each of his three ODI series since his debut last year. Madhevere is also a sharp fielder, illustrated by his catch at point, and a tidy, accurate offbreak bowler. The home side would again hope that their batters don’t throw away good starts, like in the second game. Brendan Taylor was unlucky, but Regis Chakabva and Dion Myers have to make bigger contributions in the third game. Openers Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and Tadiwanashe Marumani must at least bat out the first few overs.Form guideBangladesh WWLWW (last five completed ODIs, most recent first)Zimbabwe LLWLLIn the spotlightSikandar Raza provided Zimbabwe with a much-needed all-round option in the second ODI. He chipped in with a handy 30 before delivering six overs of his offspin with the wicket of Afif Hossain. He even dived to his left to take a sharp catch to dismiss Tamim Iqbal.Shoriful Islam’s four-wicket haul in the second ODI was the big performance he needed since making his international debut earlier this year. Islam got rewards for bowling a more consistent line and length.Team newsIqbal looked to be bothered with his knee during the last game, which could be of concern for the team management.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal (capt), 2 Liton Das (wk), 3 Shakib Al Hasan, 4 Mohammad Mithun, 5 Mosaddek Hossain, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Afif Hossain, 8 Mehidy Hasan Miraz, 9 Mohammad Saifuddin, 10 Taskin Ahmed, 11 Shoriful IslamZimbabwe’s improved performance in the second ODI could allow them to stick to the same XI.Zimbabwe (probable): 1 Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, 2 Tadiwanashe Marumani, 3 Regis Chakabva (wk), 4 Brendan Taylor (capt), 5 Dion Myers, 6 Wessley Madhevere, 7 Sikandar Raza, 8 Luke Jongwe, 9 Blessing Muzarabani, 10 Tendai Chatara, 11 Richard NgaravaPitch and conditionsThe pitch was on the slower side in the previous game, but it will still have some help for the seamers in the first hour, before flattening out for the rest of the day. The weather is expected to be mostly cold and dry.Stats and trivia Bangladesh have defeated Zimbabwe in 18 ODIs in a row. Tendai Chatara needs four more wickets to become the sixth Zimbabwean to take 100 ODI wickets. Mahmudullah is expected to play his 200th ODI on Tuesday. Only four others from Bangladesh have played more: Mushfiqur Rahim, Mashrafe Mortaza, Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal.Quotes”Our captain Tamim Iqbal is playing with an injury as the [World Cup] Super League points are involved. We are not taking Zimbabwe lightly as they are playing in home conditions. We are paying extra attention, being more focused. If our process is right, we will win 3-0.”

Slot could boldly drop Nunez by unleashing Liverpool’s 9/10 “livewire”

Liverpool have had a near-perfect start to life under Arne Slot. Though there was plenty to like from the 5-1 victory over West Ham United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening, Wolverhampton Wanderers will present a different test.

Meeting the Old Gold at Molineux this evening, Liverpool could rise into first place in the Premier League with a win, though that hinges on Manchester City dropping points at St. James’ Park this afternoon.

Slot’s attack is firing on all cylinders. Liverpool have the sharpness up top to do great things this year, but Wolves are resilient and cohesive and will look to capitalise on a slow start through players like Matheus Cunha and Jørgen Strand Larsen.

Wolves are bottom of the pile, however, with one draw and four losses from five matches and the joint-worst defensive record in the division. Liverpool will be confident that they can get the job done.

Liverpool team news

Slot has confirmed that Alisson Becker “is ready to play” after the distinguished shot-stopped missed the past three matches in all competitions with a hamstring issue.

Harvey Elliott continues his rehabilitation from a fractured foot suffered on international duty with England U21s earlier this month, but Liverpool have a pretty clean bill of health.

Wolves have potentially lost centre-back Yerson Mosquera for the campaign after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament, whereas fellow defender Toti Gomes missed last week’s defeat against Aston Villa and faces a race to return to the line-up.

Darwin Nunez has scored and assisted across his past two games – the Uruguayan’s first starts of the season – but should be dropped for this one, here’s why.

Why Slot should drop Darwin Nunez

It’s been something of a rocky road for Nunez since moving to Liverpool in a deal rising to a club-record £85m fee in 2022. The 25-year-old striker is explosive and dynamic but also frustratingly wasteful in front of goal, scoring 21 Premier League goals in total but also missing 47 big chances.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

Slot has tempered his wild side, to be sure, having narrowed the forward’s stylistic approach in scope. Fewer dribbles, less chaos, more work on positioning and spatial awareness, getting into promising positions and striking true.

Jurgen Klopp once called Nunez “unstoppable” when at his best, and though he hasn’t actually reached that level with the consistency desired, there have been promising signs across the past few matches. That said, while he placed an assist against West Ham, there was plenty to be desired from his performance.

This actually means that he took fewer touches than his goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher (who took 32) despite playing the full 90 minutes. He might have made some good movements off the ball, worked hard in defence, but didn’t do enough with the opportunities presented to him.

90min felt that he hadn’t done quite enough, handing him only a 5/10 match rating and writing that he ‘struggled to get into the game’. It might be better to use him as a second-half option against Wolves, continuing the rotation that is enabled by such a vibrant and deep frontline.

Nunez also happens to be a brilliant option to unleash in the later phase of a match, which could be key against a Wolves side that has suffered from falling to late-stage strikes.

As you can see, Wolves have suffered from shipping goals late, burning out. Liverpool, conversely, have let in a goal only once beyond the 70th minute across all competitions this season, so a fast start from the visitors will make a telling comment on which way the pendulum will swing.

Should Nunez be dropped, it’s imperative that Luis Diaz is unleashed in his stead, shifting onto the left flank, of course.

Luis Diaz could be the difference-maker

Diaz has been a revelation for the Reds this season. Refer to the first table from earlier, and you will see that he’s already scored five goals this season, with just five appearances in the Premier League too.

Liverpool's Luis Diaz

This is a remarkable start from a player who, talented, yes, wasn’t exactly the most prolific of players last season, bagging 13 goals and five assists from 53 games across all competitions for Liverpool.

He’s also highly technical, ranking among the top 5% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion and the top 10% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref.

The Colombia star – whose international efforts of late, four goals and two assists in 2024, have added to the rise – is becoming a potent force for Liverpool, and though there’s a long road to travel before he proves that his level has transcended that of a ‘purple patch’.

Described as a “livewire” by journalist Peter Hall in the past, Diaz’s clinical shooting and effective playmaking and dribbling hints toward a new version of this maverick Redman. Against the Cherries, his two-goal display earned him a 9/10 match score from the Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle.

He was rested for the midweek fixture, whereas Nunez played the full contest, so it’s obvious that Slot wants to hand him a starting berth for the sixth successive time in the English top flight, but with Diogo Jota playing an hour against Bournemouth last weekend and the same again against the Irons, he will be rested and ready to take on Molineux.

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota

That plays into the fact that Nunez will have a chance to shine later today, and who knows, given Wolves’ proneness to late concessions, he may still send the travelling Merseysiders into rapture.

Worth as much as Alisson: Liverpool star's value has risen 261% since exit

He’s been the cause of defeat for the Reds since leaving…

Mohammad Abbas rattles West Indies after Jayden Seales, Jason Holder limit Pakistan to 217

Fawad Alam hit 56, and added 85 for the sixth wicket with Faheem Ashraf

Stumps It is difficult to take issue with a day of Test match cricket when you win the toss, field first and bowl the opposition out within the day for 217, but West Indies will realise they might have easily have had a much firmer grasp on this Test match by now. It was an 85-run partnership between Fawad Alam, who top scored with 56, and Faheem Ashraf – two men who have spent varying periods of time out of this Test side for similarly unsatisfactory reasons – that appeared to have pulled Pakistan back to parity. But a self-destructive run-out with an hour to play allowed West Indies back in, and their quartet of quicks flicked the switch back, romping through the lower order to skittle Pakistan. They might, however, have done their job a bit too well at the end, because it forced the hosts into batting for an awkward four-over period. During that time, Mohammad Abbas prised out Kieran Powell and Nkrumah Bonner for ducks with characteristically glorious seam bowling, leaving West Indies wobbling at 2 for 2 overnight. The first two sessions set up the day for a grand finale, and much of the moving happened in those final two and a half hours. Alam and Ashraf were still getting their feet under the table in a budding little partnership of 23 as they walked out after tea, but a counterattacking knock from the allrounder saw Pakistan hurtle past 150. On a day when the run rate barely tiptoed past 2.25, 52 runs came off the first ten overs in that last session.Ashraf might be at pains to insist he is a bowling allrounder, but he averages over 50 with the bat since his return to the side in December last year. The belligerent pull in front of square and the elegant drive in front of cover were both in full flow, and when West Indies turned to their spinners to give the pacers a break, the runs flowed even more steadily. It appeared Ashraf had helped bail Pakistan out of a tight spot once more, but as the 100-run stand approached, the visitors offered West Indies a gift all wrapped up with a bow on it.Alam and Ashraf set off for an unnecessary single, chancing the arm of Roston Chase, whose shy caught Ashraf short of his crease. The wicket gave West Indies a second wind, and despite a brief cameo from Hasan Ali, the fast bowlers found the quality that had subdued Pakistan for much of the first two sessions, and blew through Alam and the tail. The last three fell without a run being scored after Jayden Seales had Hasan hole out on the onside, while Jason Holder broke through Alam’s defences and had Abbas edge one for a golden duck.Once Pakistan were put in to bat on a morning when showers were forecast, they began stodgily as a potent new ball pairing of Kemar Roach and Seales prowled. Abid Ali and Imran Butt were viewed as the Achilles heel of the visiting side’s batting line-up, and both fell cheaply, leaving the rebuild to Pakistan’s two best batters: Azhar Ali and Babar Azam.Fawad Alam and Faheem Ashraf shared a half-century stand•AFP/Getty Images

Roach and Seales – who now have two wickets each – found prodigious movement with the new ball, which they were careful not to waste. Captain Brathwaite had said yesterday his side had plans against each Pakistan player, and the way they went about dismantling the openers’ techniques suggested he had a point. Both were discomfited by deliveries that kept seaming back in of a length, and when the change-up from Roach targeted Butt’s stumps on the full, he was never in position to play the expansive drive he attempted. He found his off stump uprooted, and it had been coming.Abid had come off the back of an unbeaten double hundred against Zimbabwe, but against sterner opposition previously, his record remains remarkably mediocre. He got off to a streaky start with a thick outside edge that evaded the slips bringing him his first runs, but ever since, scoring opportunities were rarer than a dry day this series. Seales set him up with short deliveries through the over before pitching one up, and the Pakistan opener obliged by nicking it through to Joshua da Silva.Pakistan might have been content to lose just the two openers in the shortened first session, but in an extended second session in hot, humid conditions, West Indies ripped the spine out of the middle order. Their quartet of fast bowlers rose to the occasion, bowling expertly in partnerships – much more so than Pakistan batted in them.Azhar and Azam were removed within five deliveries of each other. Azhar in particular struggled dismally throughout an uncomfortable sojourn out in the middle, surviving no fewer than four reviews before finally nicking off to Holder. The next delivery Azam faced, he found Roach had beaten him on the inside edge, and when West Indies reviewed for a possible feather through to the keeper, Hawkeye supported their claim. All of a sudden, what had been a “nearly” session for Brathwaite’s side was transforming into a dominant one.It wasn’t ill-deserved, either. For the first 45 overs, the hosts stuck with the four pace bowlers, allowing them limited rest in oppressively humid conditions. Not for any extended period, though, was there a discernible let-up in intensity, a dropping of the shoulders or the pernicious creep-in of bad body language. The balls kept landing in the right areas, the pace didn’t fall away and Pakistan continued to be asked questions.Mohammad Rizwan would be the man to answer them, because Rizwan, apparently, does every job Pakistan require nowadays. His first ball was clipped away to midwicket for a boundary, and it soon became evident that that was how the wicketkeeper-batter would play. Seales was pulled away for four the first ball he bowled, and two further boundaries off the same bowler saw the run rate trend upwards.Rizwan fell shortly after, but it was during the Alam-Ashraf partnership, and the manic final hour which saw seven wickets fall that swung the game this way and that before leaving it finely poised overnight.

Babar Azam rues 'dropped catches in clutch phases'

Pakistan created two chances to dismiss Kemar Roach, who eventually went on to hit the winning runs, but they shelled both

Having played one of the protagonists in an epic Test match, that really could have gone either way, Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam was left to wonder what if.What if they hadn’t lost their two best batters in back-to-back overs resulting in a below-par first-innings total of 217? What if someone had been able to stand with him a little longer as he made a half-century and looked to set up a bigger target than 168? And perhaps most frustrating of all, what if they had held on to their catches?”That’s the beauty of Test cricket,” Babar said in his post-match assessment of the team’s performance to the PCB. “The way this match panned out – you could see the momentum kept swaying from one side to the other. We tried to give it our 100%. Our boys put in the effort, our bowlers and fielders put in the effort. But in the final session the one or two chances that came our way in the form of catches – had we availed of those, the result of the match could have been different.”At 149 for 8, Kemar Roach pulled Shaheen Afridi to the square-leg boundary where Hasan Ali had to come forward a few yards to get underneath the ball, and try as he might, it just wouldn’t stick. That was Pakistan’s third dropped catch in the final session. Two of them involved Roach and in the end it was he who scored the winning runs.Related

Waqar Younis 'proud' of Pakistan bowling unit for creating chances despite loss

Kemar Roach: 'I have never been in a situation like that before'

“When you drop catches in clutch phases, the course of the match changes. We got two chances but couldn’t avail of them which is why we lost the match. That said, we did pull off a few good catches, so you took good catches but dropped a few, so you lost the match.”Babar was equally rueful about a lack of substantial partnerships. He had been in the middle of one in the first innings, guiding the score from 21 for 2 to 68 for 2 with Azhar Ali, but then West Indies removed both batters in the space of seven balls. A similar double-blow resulting in the wickets of Faheem Ashraf for 44 and Yasir Shah for 0 ensured Pakistan could make only 217 after they had been put in to bat.The same story continued in the second innings and understandably Babar wanted this shortcoming addressed. “If I am to look back on how we performed throughout the match, the partnership Azhar and I put up in the first innings – it was a good one and gave us the momentum but we relinquished it when we got out,” he said.”We then wrested it back and lost back-to-back wickets. In a Test match if you keep squandering momentum from advantageous positions, you struggle to put on a big score. That’s something we need to review. A similar course of events took place in the second innings, although we weren’t able to stitch together as big a partnership as in our first dig which resulted in a lower target than we had thought of.”While the question of what if will continue to haunt Pakistan, the work that Shaheen, Hasan and Mohammad Abbas put in at Sabina Park was immense and Babar clung on to this positive as he looked ahead to the second and final Test match of this tour starting on August 20.”I’m quite happy with how they have been bowling,” he said. “Their approach and effort, how they seem to be at the ready whenever their services are called upon, and also how they give their 100%. I am quite satisfied with how they bowled throughout the game and hope they’ll do well in the next match and help us win it.”

Man City eyeing Vlahovic move as Juve prepare to take huge loss on £66m fee

Manchester City are weighing up a bargain move for a new striker in 2025 as he enters the final years of his contract at his current club, according to a recent report. The Blues have made a strong start to their 2024/25 season but have hit a bit of a sticky patch in the last week or so, as the loss of Rodri has seen them fail to beat Arsenal and Newcastle United.

Man City identify £75 million-rated superstar as top Rodri replacement

Man City and Pep are on the lookout for a replacement for their Spanish star.

Pep Guardiola is going to be without Rodri for the rest of the season at the very least, meaning it is down to the other City midfielders to step up to try and fill the void left by the Spaniard. In the short term, that may not be an issue, but Guardiola may be keen to find a replacement come the new year.

Already, the Blues have been linked with a move for Torino midfielder Samuele Ricci when the January transfer window opens. The 23-year-old is seen as a future star by the Premier League side, but there could also be the option to go for a more marquee addition.

As well as looking at Ricci, Man City are also interested in signing Nicolo Barella from Inter Milan. The Italian is said to have been identified as the top choice to replace Rodri after he impressed Guardiola when the two sides met in the Champions League last month. However, the Blues may face a challenge to get the midfielder out of the club, as he’s just signed a new deal and Inter value the player at around £75 million.

While finding a replacement for Rodri may be a top priority, the Blues also have their eyes on adding to their forward line in 2025 as a striker emerges on their radar.

Man City consider bargain approach for "machine" Vlahovic

According to Tutto Juve, relayed by Sport Witness, Manchester City are interested in signing Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic. The report states that the Premier League side like the Serbia international, and with his contract expiring in 2026, Txiki Begiristain is considering capitalising on the chance to get him on the cheap next year.

The 24-year-old has been among the goals since he joined the Italian giants, and that has continued this season, scoring four times in seven matches. Vlahovic is an important player in Thiago Motta’s team, and therefore, Juventus are working to extend the striker’s contract, but City and Atlético Madrid are keeping a close eye on the situation.

If a new contract is not agreed, Juventus will make Vlahovic, who was described as being a “machine” by under-23 scout Antonio Mango, available for sale in 2025. This could allow City and Atlético Madrid to make an approach for the striker, who would be available for an affordable price despite costing Juventus £66.6 million.

However, there is a possibility that both Man City and Atlético are being used by Vlahovic and his representatives so he can secure a new contract at Juventus.
