He played nine first-class matches between 1997 and 2007, taking 34 wickets
PTI18-Sep-2021Murtaza Lodhgar, the former Bengal left-arm spinner and Mizoram’s Under-19 coach, died of cardiac arrest on Friday night in Visakhapatnam, Cricket Association Bengal (CAB) president Avishek Dalmiya has confirmed.Lodhgar, 45, was in the port city with the Mizoram colts, who were set to play the league phase of the Vinoo Mankad Trophy as BCCI’s domestic season is set to commence.”The tragedy happened just after dinner,” Dalmiya told PTI. “Murtu (as he was known in Bengal circles) along with the team’s physio went out for an after-dinner walk and suddenly felt enormous chest pain and fell on the road. “The physio and other team members immediately took him to the hospital where he was declared brought dead late on Friday.”I still can’t believe that Murtu is no more. It is a personal loss for me as he was one of the pillars of our family-run first division club Rajasthan SC. He was one of the most loved cricketers in our fraternity and also worked with our women’s team with distinction. It’s an irreparable loss.”CAB is currently trying to make arrangements so that his family can bring his remains to the city for the burial.Lodhgar was a powerhouse performer in club cricket but due to the presence of domestic giant Utpal Chatterjee, he played only nine Ranji Trophy games, taking 34 wickets. One of the highlights of his short first-class career was a five-wicket haul against Karnataka at the JU (Salt Lake) ground in the 2004-05 season. He played a few more matches that season but never got consistent opportunities as he was in the wrong side of 30s and slightly portly for the top-level cricket.Lodhgar was also a regular at the bustling club cricket scene in the United Kingdom.
Heading into the international break, Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace sit 18th in the Premier League, still winless after seven games, having drawn three and lost four.
Palace have managed to score just five goals in their seven games played, only Southampton scoring fewer with four. This comes with the Eagles averaging 48.6% possession (11th best in the league), and averaging 13.1 shots per 90 (tenth best in the league).
Two of their five Premier League goals have come from striker, Jean-Phillipe Mateta, who has scored four goals and provided one assist in his nine appearances across all competitions so far this campaign.
Mateta's Crystal Palace career in numbers
Mateta signed for Palace back in 2022, having spent a year there on loan from January 2021. The Eagles reportedly paid around £9m to secure the striker’s services permanently from Bundesliga side, Mainz.
The 27-year-old has since made 115 appearances for the club, scoring 33 goals and providing seven assists, totalling 5,922 minutes played.
Last season, he was heavily leaned upon to provide the output from Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze’s creativity, scoring 16 goals in the Premier League in 35 games, whilst also providing five of his seven total assists that season.
The Frenchman has started this campaign fairly strong, netting four times in total, twice in the Premier League, but his chances have been far fewer so far, as the loss of Olise is causing Palace a few issues early in the season, to replicate the chance creation he added.
However, things could look even more different now had Palace made a striker signing in the summer window of 2023 after Mateta only scored two goals in the 2022/23 season, failing to find the net on a regular basis.
Crystal Palace's links to Che Adams
Back in August 2023, Palace were reportedly battling to sign Che Adams. The 28-year-old instead stayed at Southampton for the 2023/24 season before leaving on a free, joining Torino in July 2024.
One that got away
The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.
Adams has started the season strong in his new Italian setting, making nine appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals, and providing two assists, with three of his four goals coming in Serie A. Torino currently sit seventh in Serie A, having won three, drawn two, and lost two of their opening seven fixtures.
Initially not thought to be too prolific in English football, he’s proving the doubters wrong rather swiftly and is actually bettering Mateta in a host of metrics throughout 2024/25.

As you can see from their numbers, Adams is smashing it over at Torino, with manager Paolo Vanoli describing him as the “perfect player” for their plan.
Southampton striker Che Adams.
He is scoring more goals per 90 and providing more assists per 90 than Mateta, has more xG generated per 90, more progressive carries, a higher shot volume and shot accuracy, whilst also scoring at a rate of 0.33 goals/shot.
Mateta is providing better aerial battle numbers, which is to be expected with his 6 foot 3 frame, and whilst Mateta is scoring fewer, he is still scoring at the same rate per shot taken, with a 0.33 goals/shot ratio.
Southampton striker Che Adams
Palace probably won’t see this as a mistake, as Mateta showed last season what he can provide, and is still showing what he can do this season with limited service, but the Scotland international could have provided a different option upfront for the Eagles, as he is now showing some of his best form in Italy.

Teenage allrounder Alice Capsey, winner of the PCA Women’s Young Player of the Year award, has received her first professional contract in the expanded list announced by the ECB for 2021-22.The expected increase means the eight regional teams now all have six contracted players, with extra funding at Northern Diamonds and Thunder bringing the total number of women on domestic deals to 51 – in addition to the 16 centrally contracted by England Women.Alongside Capsey, who starred for Oval Invincibles as they won the inaugural Women’s Hundred while still studying for her A Levels, the other players on their first full-time contracts are: Ami Campbell, Katie Levick, Bess Heath, Charlie Dean, Danielle Gregory, Grace Scrivens and Laura Jackson.Related

Marie Kelly has switched from Central Sparks to Lightning, with Abbey Freeborne going in the opposite direction.”It’s absolutely fundamental to the future of women’s and girls’ cricket in England and Wales that we’re able to continue increasing the depth of our regional game by offering more professional contracts to our players,” Clare Connor, the ECB’s managing director of women’s cricket, said.”We cannot overstate the impact that a new professional structure is having on our game. We’ve already seen the positive impact it has had on players’ performances in a relatively short space of time. The players are thriving, raising standards across the game and deepening the potential talent pool for England Women.”Just as important is the visibility of these players, showing young girls that cricket is a game that can offer them a professional future.”Professionalising the women’s game is a significant chapter for our sport and I’m thrilled that we’re able to continue that momentum by increasing the number of professional contracts on offer.”ECB women’s professional contracts 2021-22Central Sparks: Emily Arlott, Ami Campbell, Gwenan Davies, Abbey Freeborn, Eve Jones, Issy WongLightning: Kathryn Bryce, Sarah Bryce, Bethan Ellis, Kirstie Gordon, Lucy Higham, Marie KellyNorthern Diamonds: Hollie Armitage, Jenny Gunn, Bess Heath, Beth Langston, Katie Levick, Linsey Smith, *Sterre Kalis, *Rachel SlaterSouthern Vipers: Georgia Adams, Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Charlie Dean, Tara Norris, Paige ScholfieldSouth East Stars: Alice Capsey, Aylish Cranstone, Alice Davidson-Richards, Danielle Gregory, Tash Farrant, Bryony SmithSunrisers: Amara Carr, Kelly Castle, Naomi Dattani, Jo Gardner, Cordelia Griffith, Grace ScrivensThunder: Georgie Boyce, Alex Hartley, Laura Jackson, Hannah Jones, Emma Lamb, Ellie Threlkeld, ** Phoebe GrahamWestern Storm: Dani Gibson, Alex Griffiths, Georgia Hennessey, Sophie Luff, Fi Morris, Nat Wraith*Funded by Northern Diamonds regional host, Yorkshire CCC **Funded by Thunder regional host, Lancashire CCC
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has been left very impressed with a member of his squad, who has worked tirelessly to improve and shown real dedication after the threat of being sold.
Chelsea prepare for Liverpool after solid Premier League run
The west Londoners haven’t lost a single Premier League game since their opening weekend defeat to English champions Man City at Stamford Bridge, which is testament to the excellent job done by Maresca and his coaching staff.

Chelsea boast impressive routine wins over Wolves – who they thumped 6-2 at Molineux – West Ham and Brighton. They’ve also displayed their grittier side on occasion too, with Christopher Nkunku’s dramatic late winner handing them a hard-fought 1-0 win at Bournemouth.
Their two draws were thoroughly entertaining ones as well. Crystal Palace keeper Dean Henderson thwarted Chelsea time and time again to earn the Eagles a 1-1 draw in west London, and the same can be said for Nottingham Forest, with Matz Sels pulling off some truly impressive stops to upset Chelsea’s excellent attack and keep the scores level.

Supporters can be very satisfied with what they’ve witnessed so far, but a very tough test awaits Maresca’s side in Premier League title contenders Liverpool at Anfield.
Reece James will miss the Liverpool game as he continues to get back to full fitness, taking part in full training at Cobham for the first time in months, while midfielder Omari Kellyman remains out with a hamstring injury.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are on a fine run of form under new manager Arne Slot. The Dutchman, who took over from Reds legend Jürgen Klopp, has big shoes to fill after his departure. However, Slot has done a fine job of it so far – winning six games out of seven and conceding just two goals, which is the best defensive record in the division.
A trip to Merseyside is as tough as it gets right now, but Maresca will still fancy Chelsea’s chances considering their own promising start to 2024/2025.
He will be counting on star players like Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, Moises Caicedo and the rejuvenated Noni Madueke, with an interesting bit of information coming out on the latter man this week.
Maresca happy as Madueke works tirelessly after threat of Chelsea exit
According to GiveMeSport, Maresca has been impressed with Madueke behind the scenes, as the winger showcases true professionalism and dedication to the cause.
Indeed, insiders have suggested to the outlet that the threat of being sold in the summer window has elevated Madueke to another level, and this hasn’t gone unnoticed by Chelsea’s new manager.
Noni Madueke for Chelsea
The former PSV Eindhoven starlet’s resurrection is said to have caught Maresca by surprise, and his new-found form at Cobham is translating onto the field. Madueke ranks among their top five performers according to WhoScored, bagging four goals in six Premier League starts, and he’s averaged more attempts at goal per 90 in the top flight than any of his teammates.
This isn’t Madueke’s first lot of eye-catching performances for the Blues, so perhaps all he needed was consistent opportunities to impress.
“Noni was very sharp, considering he was not so well on Wednesday, Thursday. He trained yesterday,” said former Chelsea interim manager Frank Lampard on Madueke last year.
“I thought he was really good against Arsenal in a tough game and got his goal. And again today [vs Bournemouth], he’s got a fantastic one-on-one ability to go past people. I like him as a lad, he’s got really good energy.
“He will know that because he’s hungry, and I want that. It’s been a breath of fresh air, him coming in and he’s training well to deserve that.”

Daniel Farke has confirmed that a £40,000-a-week Leeds United star is ahead of schedule in his bid to return from injury.
The Whites have suffered a lot with injuries already in this 2024/25 Championship season, but that hasn’t stopped them from picking up some impressive results. It is just one defeat in 13 league games, as their win over Plymouth Argyle on Saturday means they are just three points behind leaders Sunderland.
A dream for Tanaka: Leeds enquire about signing "very special" £7m star
Leeds United may find it difficult to secure a deal for the central midfielder.
ByDan Emery Nov 4, 2024 Leeds transfer news
The injuries that Leeds have picked up so early into the campaign will have been a worry for Farke, and it made the German do something he wasn’t keen on doing, and that was turn to the free agent market and sign Josuha Guilavogui.
But that addition is a short-term one, and by the time January arrives, Farke and Leeds may have their eye on a few players they would like to sign as they try to return to the Premier League. In a recent report, it emerged that Leeds are interested in signing Lewis O’Brien from Nottingham Forest. The midfielder is currently on loan at MLS side LAFC, and even though they have an option to make the deal permanent, the Whites are also keen on signing the player.
O’Brien is not the only midfielder Leeds are looking at, as they have also been linked with a move for Kalvin Phillips in January. The Englishman is currently on loan at Ipswich Town from Manchester City, but there has been talk of him looking to return to Elland Road. However, Leeds are not expected to seal a reunion with Phillips in January.
That will be disappointing news for Leeds fans, but their pain might not last too long as they now hear that a key player is ahead of his schedule as he looks to return from his injury.
Leeds’ Ampadu hopefuly over earlier injury return
As reported by the Yorkshire Post, Farke has confirmed that Ethan Ampadu is ahead of schedule and he could be available earlier than expected. The Welshman has been out injured for over a month now, as he suffered the knee injury in the 3-0 win over Coventry City back in September.
Farke now states that Ampadu, who earns £40,000 a week, is ahead of schedule, and while he is not training yet and will not be rushed back, he could be available sooner than originally expected: “He’s working hard, already doing some running. It will be a while before he can join us in team training; he’s even a bit ahead of schedule. I’m carefully optimistic he can return to team training a bit earlier. We will see.
“Normally, it would be realistic to be back in training in the middle of December and then available in the beginning of January. It would be nice if he can help us already a bit earlier and sooner because he’s our captain and a versatile player. We would love to have him back, but we won’t rush it. It was a serious injury. He’s a bit ahead, but let’s see how it develops.

OLHA A VIRADA!
