Dimuth Karunaratne, Pathum Nissanka and Dhananjaya de Silva flatten West Indies

On a surface that is expected to dry out and take turn by day three, Sri Lanka’s 267 for 3 represents a substantial advantage

Dimuth Karunaratne hunkered down in the difficult first session, scored more confidently in the afternoon, and then pressed home Sri Lanka’s advantage in the evening, to go to stumps at 132 off 265 balls in his first Test since May. Pathum Nissanka and Dhananjaya de Silva also made contrasting fifties, to help their captain bookend the day with big stands. On a surface that is expected to dry out and take turn by day three, Sri Lanka’s 267 for 3 represents a substantial advantage for the hosts.West Indies will rue a number of close and missed chances, none greater than the dropped catch off Karunaratne when he was on 14. Rahkeem Cornwall, who perhaps put Karunaratne through his greatest test of the innings with his first spell, got a ball to take the outside edge as the batter attempted to open the face. It flew just wide of the wicketkeeper’s gloves, and at a catchable height to the right of slip. Jermaine Blackwood could not get two hands to the ball, though, and grassed it.Related

Karunaratne: Arthur was 'like a father' to Sri Lanka's players

Offspin was West Indies’ most effective weapon on day one, with Roston Chase removing Oshada Fernando and Angelo Mathews, both for 3, after tea. Their best bowler, however, was Jason Holder, who delivered eight maiden overs in his total of 14, and troubled Mathews so consistently that it prompted the batter to take a fatal risk against Chase.Shannon Gabriel, who was controversially preferred over Kemar Roach for this Test, was the other bowler to take a wicket, when he had Nissanka chase a wide delivery, and nick off to first slip roughly midway through the middle session. Gabriel was expensive, though, leaking 56 runs from his 12 overs. Both frontline spinners – Cornwall and left-armer Jomel Warrican – also delivered good spells, particularly in the morning, when the pitch had a little bite.Jason Holder was perhaps West Indies’ best bowler on day one in Galle•AFP/Getty Images

Karunaratne struggled in the early overs, as you might expect from a batter who has barely played any competitive cricket over the past six months. He played and missed against Gabriel and Holder, and was pinned down by Cornwall, who used the crease to vary his angle to the left-hander from around the wicket. With the benefit of that dropped catch, though, Karunaratne survived, and began to build. He went to lunch on 32 off 75 balls, and raised the tempo after the break – the conditions having settled somewhat. He used his feet to drive the spinners through mid-off, and sometimes shuffled across to either lap or glance them through fine leg – his two most productive regions. The seamers he largely hit square of the wicket, often employing his favoured flick.Roston Chase on the Galle pitch so far:

Think the pitch is a good batting pitch. Not much there for the fast bowlers. The ball was spinning a little bit early on with the moisture that the wicket had, but after lunch it settled down. We took the second new ball, but I still think it’s a pitch where we need to be patient. On this track it’ll take a little more time to take the batters’ wickets. We need to be disciplined in our lines and lengths, and back it up in the field. Patience is the key.

Karunaratne got to fifty soon after lunch, and had a second mild slice of fortune soon after, when he hit one low in the air through the legs of bowler Cornwall, who was not quick enough to get down to the possible catch. But the remainder of his innings was largely fuss-free. He used the depth of the crease to punish spinners who pitched too short, and although his first attempt at a reverse sweep had prompted a big lbw appeal, he got better with that shot through the course of the day. Karunaratne did get stuck in the nineties for 29 balls, but that was largely the doing of Holder’s impeccable line and length. The hundred, which came off 212 deliveries, was the 13th of his career, and his fourth this year – his previous four innings having brought 66, 118, 244 and 75. Earlier in 2021, he’d also hit a second-innings hundred at The Wanderers.Karunaratne’s most fruitful stand of the day was with Nissanka, who hit 56 off 140 balls. The pair made 139 together, which is a Sri Lankan record for the first wicket against West Indies. Although Karunaratne was reticent through the first session, Nissanka had been even more so, having been promoted to the top of the innings due to the elected absence of Lahiru Thirimanne.Late in the day, after West Indies’ dry bowling had brought them two wickets, de Silva came in at No. 5 and livened up the place, as he often does. He creamed his fourth ball behind point for four, came down the track against the spinners and hit them aerially down the ground, swept effectively, square drove, and reached his ninth Test fifty off the 62nd ball he faced.West Indies took the second new ball late in the day, but could not make a breakthrough before bad light stopped play two overs short of what would have constituted a full day.

Lopetegui must replace Alvarez with West Ham teen who’s like Rice & Carrick

After beating Manchester United last week, West Ham returned to losing ways with a 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at the City ground this weekend.

The Hammers were completely outplayed, holding just 47% possession, managing only four shots in the entire game, and fashioning zero big chances.

This leaves Julen Lopetegui’s side 14th in the Premier League after ten games, winning three, drawing two, and losing five.

West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui

Right on the cusp of halftime, Edson Alvarez was sent off, making matters worse, and meaning Lopetegui will be without him for next week’s game against Everton at the London Stadium.

Edson Alvarez's performance in numbers

Before Alvarez was sent off after 47 minutes played, the Mexican only managed a 60% passing accuracy (15/25 passes made), 0/3 long balls completed, only won 2/5 ground duels, committed three fouls, and lost possession ten times. It wasn’t a great day at the office, let’s put it that way.

The 27-year-old has made ten appearances for the Hammers this season, already picking up two yellow cards, two red cards, and conceding 21 goals across 545 minutes played.

Edson Alvarez

With Alvarez serving a suspension, the easy midfield options for Lopetegui would be the likes of Guido Rodriguez, Tomas Soucek, Lucas Paqueta, and even Carlos Soler, who have all got minutes in the Premier League for the Spanish manager this season.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, the Hammers could have their very own Declan Rice and Michael Carrick hybrid in the academy who could solve their midfield issues.

West Ham's wildcard Alvarez replacement

The 18-year-old, Lewis Orford, is very highly regarded in the West Ham academy system, already being likened to both Rice and Carrick by journalist John Brewin.

The midfielder has the ability to pick passes at all ranges, and possesses the height of both Carrick and Rice, but has an even quicker turn of pace according to Brewin.

Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen for West Ham

Orford has made 98 appearances for the Hammers U18 and U21 side combined, scoring 19 goals, providing 30 assists, and totalling 7,494 minutes played.

So far this season, the 18-year-old has made 11 appearances for the U21 side, providing four assists across his 969 minutes on the field.

Above is the 2024/25 metrics so far of West Ham’s deepest midfielders, analysing their passing/progression and defensive metrics.

Since losing Rice, the Hammers have put a lot of their attention into replacing the industry on the defensive end that he bought, with both Alvarez and Rodriguez showing high levels of defensive actions per 90.

However, Carrick, who was more of a passing maestro in his career, is a type the Hammers don’t really have in deep areas, as their most technically astute central midfielder, Lucas Paqueta, often finds himself in more advanced areas.

Orford could be the perfect hybrid of a progressive passer from deep, who is technically astute on the ball but can also protect the back line with high-quality defensive actions.

Former Spurs midfielder Michael Carrick

Lopetegui’s job is clearly beginning to come under some threat, as the poor performances continue to pile on, which could in fact make this the perfect time to take a squad selection risk and bring the 18-year-old into the senior squad.

'Will continue playing franchise cricket till my body allows me' – Dwayne Bravo

The West Indies allrounder has indicated he would like to get into a coaching role in the future

Dwayne Bravo will no longer represent West Indies in T20Is – the only format he was playing at the international level – but he will continue to ply his trade in T20 leagues.Bravo, 38, had announced that the ongoing T20 World Cup would be his last tournament with West Indies, and the defending champions’ campaign ended with an eight-wicket defeat to Australia on Saturday.”I will continue playing franchise cricket for a few more years as long as my body will allow me to,” Bravo said after the game at Abu Dhabi. “My aim was to retire a few years ago, but with a change of presidency (at CWI) and change of leadership comes a change of heart, and I wanted to give back to West Indies because I was still in a good place physically and enjoy my cricket.”Bravo, who made his international debut in 2004, did not play for West Indies from October 2016 until the end of 2019, only returning in January 2020 with Kieron Pollard installed as the new captain.”I had a brief chat with Pollard and said I would like to come back and play in the shortest format, which is my specialty,” Bravo said. “And they gave me the opportunity to play again, and I’m very grateful for that.Related

Is this the last time we see Chris Gayle for West Indies?

Dwayne Bravo confirms international retirement after West Indies exit

“I’m very happy to have someone like that that I can call as a friend, not just a teammate, but a friend,” Bravo said of Pollard. “He’s one of the main reasons why I also came out every time to give my best chance to see if we could push for another World Cup title, but it wasn’t to be. But I’m still very happy with the way how he led West Indies cricket in the last two years. West Indies needed strong leadership, and he’s a strong leader. We know this [World Cup] wasn’t meant to be, but I know as an individual, he will bounce back strong with his character, and I’m very happy that I was able to be a part of this journey with him.”Bravo sees himself getting into coaching once he hangs up his playing boots for good•Getty Images

While Bravo has made it clear he’s done with international cricket, the game against Australia also had a farewell feel to it for Chris Gayle. When he was dismissed, Gayle waved to the crowd and exchanged hugs with Andre Russell and Bravo himself after crossing the boundary rope. He later handed out pieces of his playing kit to fans as well. Gayle, however, has said he hasn’t quite retired yet – he hopes to play a farewell game in front of his home crowd in Jamaica. For his part, Bravo identified several young stars who could go on to fill his shoes in the West Indies team, naming Dominic Drakes, Odean Smith and Romario Shepherd – all of whom had breakout CPL 2021 seasons and were in the running to make the World Cup squad too – and said this was the right time for him to walk away.”I think this was the right moment for me to walk away from the game, and allow the next generation and young players who I share a very good friendship with, to come through,” Bravo said. “They still see me around but more passing information around as policy and trying to give my experience back to the next group of players, and hopefully they can also have a 12-to-18-year career as well.”While he still wants to play franchise cricket, Bravo indicated that if he does hang up his playing boots for good, a coaching role could be on the cards.”Definitely at some point if I decide to walk away from the game finally, I would love to get back in the coaching department, so I already started to put things in place for when it’s that time,” Bravo said. “Definitely you will see me around. Like I said, cricket has given me everything. Cricket has given me the life I always wanted for myself and my family. So I think it’s only fair that I love to give back to the game that has given me so much. Again, I keep encouraging myself because of the talent I see coming through in West Indies, and whatever team I play for around the world, so definitely you will see me involved.”

Roger Harper removed as West Indies' lead selector

Head coach Phil Simmons will take temporary charge of selection responsibilities, along with the team’s captains in the various formats

Roger Harper’s two-year term as West Indies’ chairman of selectors will be coming to an end on December 31 with the board unwilling to renew his contract. Having taken up the job in late 2019, the teams that Harper selected won five out of 16 Tests, 11 out of 21 ODIs and 14 out of 39 T20Is.Selection became a hot-button topic for West Indies at the recently concluded T20 World Cup, where Jason Holder was not among the original 15-man squad to take part in the tournament. The former captain’s performances in the IPL – 16 wickets at an economy rate of 7.75 – only added to the scrutiny.Named as a reserve player, Holder was eventually brought into the squad after they lost their first two games of the tournament where West Indies went in as defending champions and went out with just one win. Chris Gayle was at the centre of another controversy around selection when he went after Curty Ambrose for suggesting he wasn’t an automatic pick in the West Indies team anymore.CWI will begin looking for a new lead selector in January. Until then, head coach Phil Simmons will take temporary charge of those responsibilities, along with the team’s captains in the various formats. That’s Kraigg Brathwaite for Test cricket and Kieron Pollard for limited-overs assignments. Jimmy Adams, CWI’s Director of Cricket, will oversee the process.”I would like to thank CWI for the opportunity to serve West Indies cricket in the role of lead selector and I wish the organisation the very best for the future,” Harper said. “I would also like to thank all those whose efforts and cooperation helped me to perform my role efficiently.”Miles Bascombe, who served with Harper, has also been terminated.”We want to thank Roger and Miles for their work and dedicated services to West Indies cricket in the last two years, as members of the Men’s Senior Selection Panel,” Adams said. “Selecting West Indies teams for international competition is a very challenging assignment, and both gentlemen performed their roles with transparency and dignity.”

West Ham plotting double transfer swoop for Scottish teen sensations

West Ham United are plotting a double transfer swoop on two teen sensations, according to a new report.

The Hammers have had a disappointing 2024/25 Premier League season so far, as many believe they are underachieving under new manager Julen Lopetegui. The poor performances and results have already put the Spaniard under serious pressure as we head into the busiest part of the campaign.

West Ham make "special" £20m player top target to replace Lucas Paqueta

West Ham’s board have identified a player who could be the perfect replacement for one of their key midfielders.

ByBrett Worthington Nov 17, 2024 West Ham transfer news

But despite Lopetegui’s future at West Ham being up in the air, the Hammers are putting plans in place ahead of the January transfer window opening. West Ham are “well-placed” to sign Tariq Lamptey in January, as they are interested in signing the right-back due to Brighton looking to move Lamptey on before he leaves for nothing in the summer.

The defender has fallen out of favour with the Seagulls and looks unlikely to sign a new contract, so a move in January looks increasingly on the cards. However, the Hammers are not the only interested side, as several Premier League teams are also keen on signing Lamptey.

As well as Lamptey, a new report has also claimed that the east Londoners have made Manchester City’s James McAtee a top target to replace Lucas Paqueta. West Ham fear they could lose Paqueta in January as he is wanted by Brazilian side Botafogo and could be sold for the right price.

That means the Hammers are on the search for a replacement – and see McAtee as his successor. City could be open to a sale if they receive a fee of around £20 million for McAtee, which is said to not be a problem for West Ham.

Manchester City midfielder James McAtee.

Lamptey and McAtee are more well-known names for Hammers fans, but the Premier League club are also in the market for two young stars who are considerably more obscure.

Tim Steidten plotting double West Ham transfer swoop for teen sensations

According to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, West Ham are looking to sign Airdrie midfield duo Cole and Dylan Williams. Airdrie currently plays in Scotland’s Championship, where they are bottom of the table after 14 games, winning just one and losing 11.

It has been a frustrating season for the Scottish side so far, but they do have two teen sensations on their books who appear to be wanted by several clubs from England and Scotland.

Nixon states that the Williams pair are of interest to West Ham, who are keen to sign the pair ahead of Scottish giants Celtic. The 16-year-old twins have been putting in some impressive displays this season, and the pair are able to leave their current club, where they are on short-term deals.

Amid the Hammers’ interest, they face competition from Southampton and Celtic. The twins really impressed against Celtic’s youth team recently, and that has led to the Scottish side taking a big interest in them.

Nixon said (as per Hammers.news): “Saints and Hammers have sent spies to Scotland twice in recent weeks and seem to be heading the race.”

Meanwhile, Southampton and West Ham have had people watching the pair in recent weeks and are seemingly leading the race. It seems unlikely that either player would be a major part of the squad were they to join, but the likes of Tim Steidten clearly view this as a potential opportunity to build for the long-term future.
