Liverpool want to sign forward for £20m with Ligue 1 club in financial crisis

Liverpool now want to sign a “dynamo” international forward, with one Ligue 1 in a financial crisis according to reports.

Liverpool flying under slot

Since the appointment of Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp’s successor in the summer, Liverpool have been firing on all cylinders.

The Reds are currently top of both the Premier League and Champions League, having won 16 of their 18 games in all competitions this term. They are also finding the net for fun, having scored 24 goals in just 12 top-flight games – a total bettered only by free-scoring Tottenham Hotspur.

Most recently, Slot’s men put three past bottom-placed Southampton in a hard-fought 3-2 victory at St. Mary’s. Mohamed Salah scored twice on the day, taking his total for the season to 12 in all competitions, while midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai was also on the scoresheet. Speaking to the press after the victory, Slot was full of praise for Salah.

Mohamed Salah scores for Liverpool

“We always know we can trust on him if things are difficult for us. After we went 2-1 down, I didn’t really feel that was the moment we should score in. Then out of a fantastic pass from Ryan Gravenberch though [we did]. But the timing of the run and the way Mo finished it was special and that helped us really back into the game.”

Liverpool eyeing Malick Fofana move

Despite already scoring goals aplenty, Liverpool still want to add more firepower to their forward line. According to a report from Spain, the Reds are interested in signing Lyon winger Malick Fofana, who has been one of Ligue 1 football’s breakout stars this season.

The 19-year-old, who is now a full Belgium international, has scored five goals and registered two assists in 16 games for Les Gones, and has turned heads with his energetic displays on the left wing.

Liverpool want to take advantage of Lyon’s current financial crisis and land Fofana at a cut-price ranging between £13 million and £20 million, claims the report.

Earlier this month, it was ruled that Lyon will be demoted to Ligue 2 at the end of the season if they do not improve their finances. They have also been banned from signing players in January, so to balance their books, the seven-time French champions are likely to have to sell several key players after the New Year, and Fofana could be one of them.

Fofana a "dynamo"

In an interview with DAZN earlier this month, per Foot Boom, French football reporter Walid Acherchour expressed his admiration for Fofana and his combative style of play.

“He is a player who is not just drawn to the spotlight or the ball, but he is willing to get stuck in, disrupt transitions, and has a remarkable football IQ. He combines well, accelerates, and is an energetic dynamo.”

“He is there to inject some urgency into the sometimes slow play of Olympique Lyonnais in midfield. Let’s cherish this little man, Malick Fofana, who shines brightly with his talent, and even though he has a cute little face, he is anything but soft on the pitch.”

Mohammad Hasnain reported at BBL, set to undergo test on his action

He was reported by umpires in the BBL, where he played five games for Sydney Thunder

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain is set to undergo a test on his bowling action on Tuesday, after it was reported by umpires in the Big Bash League. Hasnain has just finished a productive five-game stint with Sydney Thunder but will now undergo the test at the ICC-accredited biomechanics laboratory in Lahore. The 21-year-old, who once bowled a 155kph delivery in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), made a strong impact in his debut season at the BBL. He came in as a replacement for English quick Saqib Mahmood, and took 3 for 20 in Thunder’s 28-run win over Adelaide Strikers, his debut. In a statement, Cricket Australia confirmed it was during that first appearance that he was reported by the umpires. He played another four matches in the competition. In his last game against Sydney Sixers, Moises Henriques was heard on the stump mic saying “nice throw mate” to Hasnain, after he bowled him a bouncer. Hasnain didn’t pick up a wicket in that game though he was economical (4-0-22-0), as Sixers won the match by 60 runs. In the five games he played, Hasnain conceded runs at just 6.00 per over while taking seven wickets at average of 15.71.Hasnain was due to undergo a test on his action on January 19 in Australia, but because he was due to return to Pakistan at the end of his stint and because there is an ICC-accredited testing facility in Lahore, it was decided he would get tested there. The test comes at a crucial time for Hasnain, given that the PSL’s seventh season is due to begin in less than ten days in Karachi and Hasnain is an important part of the Quetta Gladiators squad. If the test finds his action to be legal, he will continue playing as usual. But if he is found to have an illegal action, he will be suspended from bowling in international cricket and domestic events around the world until he corrects his action.Under clause 11.5 of the ICC’s regulations and protocols surrounding illegal actions, the PCB – as Hasnain’s national cricket federation – can permit him to bowl in their domestic events. Hasnain could be allowed to bowl in the PSL, though in the past they have not permitted bowlers with suspect actions to bowl in the league. In any case, he is allowed to bowl until the results of his testing come out, which could take up to 14 days. That means, in theory, he could be fine to bowl in the opening games of the PSL.As the initial report was made during a BBL match, CA will review and verify the report provided by the PCB’s testing facility.

"Worse than Malacia": Amorim simply must drop "dreadful" Man Utd star

Manchester United claimed their second consecutive Europa League victory last night, claiming all three points in a close encounter with Bodo/Glimt.

The meeting was new boss Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge of the Red Devils at Old Trafford, making the perfect start to his tenure in front of the home faithful.

A double from Rasmus Hojlund after the opener from Alejandro Garnacho secured the win, despite falling behind early in the first half after two rapid-fire strikes from the visitors.

Despite the win, there will still undoubtedly be a couple of areas that the 39-year-old manager will want to improve on ahead of Sunday’s clash with Everton on home soil.

A couple of players will be lucky to retain their starting roles in the first-team after a disappointing showing in the Europa League last night.

Man Utd’s disappointing performers against Bodo/Glimt

Left-back Tyrell Malacia started the encounter last night, making his first appearance in over 500 days after his torrid recent injury record.

The Dutchman featured for the academy side in the EFL Trophy a couple of weeks ago but was awarded with a place in Amorim’s side for the European clash.

However, the 25-year-old looked rusty throughout, to be expected, given his lengthy injury lay-off, being outpaced by winger Philip Zinckernagel before the former Nottingham Forest loanee fired home to make it 2-1 to the visitors.

Malacia also only managed to complete one of the eight crosses he attempted during his time on the pitch, whilst also winning just 50% of his duels – giving the opposition multiple opportunities down his side.

The left-back was subsequently replaced at the break, with Amorim making the right call in withdrawing the talent from the game given his lack of game time and impact when appearing for the Red Devils.

Opposite winger Antony featured in an unfamiliar role last night, starting as a right wing-back, placing more defensive responsibility on the big-money signing.

The 24-year-old only played for around 15 minutes more than Malacia, managing to get dribbled past twice, and losing 50% of his duels as he struggled to get to grips with his new position.

Given their displays, they will both be extremely lucky to retain their respective roles, but one other first team member has been disappointing throughout the early stages of the campaign – with his performance no different from his outings in recent weeks.

The United player who was worse than Malacia

Right-back Diogo Dalot came into 2024/25 with his hopes of being a success once more after claiming the club’s Player’s Player of the Year award during the previous campaign.

However, the Portuguese international has struggled to replicate such performances, leading to journalist Samuel Luckhurst dubbing the defender as “dreadful” so far this season – with his open goal miss against West Ham United summing up how much he’s failed to impress.

He was tasked with providing that added defensive solidity after the substitution of Malacia, but was unable to do so, with content creator Ronaldo Brown claiming he was “worse than Malacia” after his introduction at the break.

Dalot only managed 43 touches in the entirety of the second half, completing 83% of the passes he attempted during his cameo off the bench.

The 25-year-old failed to make any tackles, whilst only coming out on top of 50% of the duels that he entered – often getting bypassed in his wing-back role.

He gave possession away nine times during his 45 minutes on the pitch, an average of once every five minutes he played, having notably produced an errant backpass that contributed to Andre Onana having to surge out of his box late in the second half.

Given his recent form, compatriot Amorim may have to brutally drop the talent from his side, with other players in his squad deserving the opportunity to showcase their ability under the 39-year-old.

Dalot hasn’t become a bad player overnight, with Amorim needing to take him out of the firing line and instil a newfound sense of confidence to allow him to reach the levels he showcased during the previous season.

Newcastle now eyeing "complete" £25m ace scouts just saw pocket Gyokeres

As the January transfer window approaches, Newcastle United have reportedly turned their attention towards a young defender who just pocketed one of Europe’s best forwards in the Champions League.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies desperately need reinforcements amid their frustrating inconsistency throughout the current campaign. If Eddie Howe has his sights set on taking his side back into the European places then he must receive backing from those at St James’ Park in the winter window. On that front, it’s a big month for Paul Mitchell too, given how the new sporting director failed to welcome several fresh faces in the summer, resulting in Newcastle’s struggles ever since.

With that in mind, the rumours have already been coming thick and fast. The likes of Antoine Semenyo and Bryan Mbeumo have already been linked with a 2025 switch to Newcastle and the Magpies know all about the latter’s quality after last weekend. But it’s not just attacking reinforcements that have been mentioned, given Newcastle’s need for a central defender.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Mitchell is now plotting a move to sign Joel Ordonez after sending scouts to watch his performance in Club Brugge’s 2-1 victory over Sporting Club in midweek Champions League action.

The 20-year-old, valued at a reported £25m, played a large part in keeping Viktor Gyokeres quiet and limited the star striker to just one shot, 0.07 expected goals and just four touches inside the area. Ordonez, meanwhile, completed nine defensive actions in an impressive display.

Newcastle must regret selling star who’s now similar to a £120m monster

Newcastle aren’t alone in their interest, however, with Chelsea and Manchester United also in attendance and watching the young defender alongside other talents to create a hectic Premier League race for his signature. Following their recent defensive struggles, it’s a race that Newcastle ought to win.

"Complete" Ordonez can solve Newcastle's defensive problem

After failing to sign Marc Guehi last summer despite months of chasing his signature, Newcastle’s main defensive problem remains a lack of depth behind Fabian Schar and Sven Botman. With the latter still recovering from an ACL injury alongside Jamaal Lascelles, Howe has been left to shift Dan Burn into a makeshift central defender from left-back in what has undoubtedly played a part in the Magpies’ form.

Still just 20 years old, however, Ordonez can solve that problem for years to come and step in alongside either Botman or Schar when the time comes. The Club Brugge man has already shown what he can do on the European stage and has earned high praise as a result. Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig went as far as describing Ordonez as “complete” back in November.

Whether Newcastle make their move in January remains to be seen, but Ordonez should certainly be on their list of targets in 2025 as they look to bolster their defensive options.
