Not just Maguire: Amorim shown why he must axe 1/10 Man Utd man this summer

Manchester United’s poor run of form continued with a 2-2 draw away from home against Everton. It was a disappointing performance for much of the game from the Red Devils, who were 2-0 down at halftime thanks to first-half goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

In a chaotic final 20 minutes plus stoppage time, Bruno Fernandes scored a well-directed freekick past Jordan Pickford, who was rooted to the spot, to pull one back. Moments later, Manuel Ugarte fired home a spectacular volley, after controlling a loose ball on his chest, to equalise.

There were claims for a last-gasp penalty for the Toffees after Ashley Young was brought down in the box. It was initially given on the field, but the referee reversed his decision after being sent to the monitor to have a second look.

It was a poor performance from United’s defensive unit, who were leaky again as their side went behind in a game once more. Harry Maguire was someone who particularly struggled.

Maguire’s stats vs. Everton

It was a tough day at the office for one of United’s most experienced players, Maguire. The England international was arguably at fault for Doucoure’s goal. He was outjumped by the Everton midfielder, who won the race to Andre Onana’s parry up in the air, nodding home for 2-0.

At times, the United number five showed his dominance. For much of the game, he was strong in the air, although not when it mattered most, and was also progressive and calm on the ball. As per Sofascore, he won six from nine aerial duels and had a 97% pass accuracy.

However, the former Red Devils captain struggled in the crucial moments. The Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst gave him a 4/10 and said his error for Doucoure’s goal was ‘reminiscent’ of one he would have made in Erik ten Hag’s first season.

Harry Maguire

It was a disappointing performance from such a crucial player under Ruben Amorim. Maguire has been in strong form for much of the season, but the Portuguese manager will be hoping this was nothing more than a blip, a one-off game.

However, there is one United player who continues to struggle for form in a United shirt.

The United player who needs to be sold

It has been a dire season in front of goal for United. They loaned out one of their richest sources of goals, Marcus Rashford, and Amad is out for the rest of the campaign with a knee injury.

That leaves a lot of pressure on Rasmus Hojlund, who has been anonymous for much of 2024/25. The Dane has just two goals in 21 Premier League games and is now 11 games without a top-flight goal. Against Everton, he was described as a “passenger” by football analyst Waseem.

Luckhurst agreed that Hojlund struggled against the Toffees. He gave him a shockingly low rating of 1/10 and did not hold back in his review. He described the Dane as ‘hopeless’, and said he ‘did very little right all afternoon’.

Hojlund was substituted at the 70-minute mark, replaced by young striker Chido Obi. One academy analyst was full of praise for the youngster, saying there had been “no drop in quality since his introduction”.

Statistically, there was not too much difference between him and Hojlund. In 50 minutes less, Obi had just two fewer touches, with ten to Hojlund’s 12, and won more duels, one out of three to the United number nine’s zero from eight.

It is becoming concerning that Hojlund simply cannot break this goalless run he is on. At times, he can look out of his depth, which must be frustrating to see from Amorim’s point of view. His side needs goals, and Hojlund is not providing them.

Perhaps his future at Old Trafford is not as guaranteed as it once seemed. Time might be running out in a United shirt for the former Atalanta man. He certainly needs goals soon, or it would not be a surprise if the Red Devils decided to go as far as selling him in the summer.

Sciver completes seamless comeback as England sweep series 3-0

Ecclestone’s miserly three-wicket haul compounds West Indies’ woes

Nat Sciver was in the runs – again – and the wickets as England wrapped up a 3-0 sweep of their ODI series against West Indies in Antigua.Sciver, the player of the match and the series, scored her second half-century in three games after having made her comeback on this tour from a three-month mental-health break, setting a record for most ODI runs by an England woman cricketer in a calendar year in the process. Her 85 off 69 balls to steady England from 84 for 4 took her to 833 ODI runs for 2022 and past Claire Taylor’s 2005 mark of 807 despite missing the three matches against India in September. It followed her 96-ball 90 in the first match against West Indies, which marked her return to action.Related

Bell claims four wickets to seal series for England

Sciver also took two important wickets in an excellent bowling performance by England, led by Sophie Ecclestone’s miserly three-wicket haul, as West Indies collapsed to 105 in pursuit of 257.For the second match in a row, West Indies failed to capitalise after bowling England out inside their 50-over allocation and they have now gone 11 ODI innings without reaching 200.Apart from captain Hayley Matthews, who had given her side a chance by claiming the wickets of Sciver, Danni Wyatt and Charlie Dean as England were bowled out for 256 in 43.3 overs, West Indies’ batting performance was poor, with no one else passing 13.Even Matthews’ 28 from 39 fell well short, but she started well enough with some exquisite extra-cover drives early on off Freya Davies, in the side for Lauren Bell, who was rested following her crucial four-wicket haul in Tuesday’s second match.Matthews fell to a brilliant one-handed catch by Ecclestone, launching herself to her right at slip to pluck the ball off Kate Cross and put West Indies at 40 for 1 in the 11th over.Cross was extremely economical with 1 for 14 from her seven overs, but left-arm spinner Ecclestone was next-level in that department with 48 dot balls in her nine overs, which yielded three wickets for just nine runs. Offspinner Dean was also frugal with 40 dot balls in eight overs and 1 for 16.West Indies’ run rate nosedived after Matthews’ dismissal. Sciver had Kycia Knight caught by Tammy Beaumont and pinned Rashada Williams, who had scored an unbeaten half-century in the second match, lbw either side of Dean’s removal of Aaliyah Alleyne, stumped for 8 as West Indies lost three wickets without a run in the space of ten balls.Hayley Matthews played her part with ball and bat, but there was little support from her team-mates•Hagen Hopkins/ICC/Getty Images

Ecclestone then had two in an over when she removed Chedean Nation for a laboured 10 off 30 balls and Chinelle Henry, both lbw, to make it 91 for 7 at the end of the 32nd over. From there, the tail fell away and with Shakera Selman unable to bat because of injury, the home side posted their worst total of the series.Earlier, Kaysia Schultz, the left-arm orthodox spinner on debut, had claimed the wickets of opener Emma Lamb, ending a 63-run opening stand with Beaumont, and No. 3 Sophia Dunkley before Sciver and Wyatt steadied England with an 80-run partnership for the fifth wicket.Sciver clipped a fuller ball from Cherry-Ann Fraser to the boundary through backward square-leg to bring up her 20th ODI fifty. But Matthews brought herself back into the attack in the 28th over and prised out two key wickets, tossing one up to get an advancing Wyatt stumped, before her full, flighted delivery slid under Sciver’s attempted slog-sweep and clattered into leg stump.Selman had bowled Beaumont as England went from 63 for 0 to 65 for 2 and she grabbed her second when she trapped Ecclestone lbw and England wobbled again at 218 for 7.Matthews enticed Dean with a well-flighted delivery that resulted in a return catch and, after Cross fell to Selman’s yorker, Henry – who had seen chances go down off Wyatt and Amy Jones – had Davies caught by Shemaine Campbelle at cover point. That left Amy Jones, still standing in for resting captain Heather Knight as she returns from hip surgery, stranded on 32 off 31 balls following her impressive 70 not out in the second game.Jon Lewis, England’s new head coach, now has three wins from as many games in charge and both Jones and Sciver spoke positively about the more aggressive approach he has tried to instil in the side since taking over from Lisa Keightley late last month.”We’re committing to a style of play and we’re fully backed,” Jones told BT Sport. “Whilst it’s not going to come off every time, we’ve made three pretty decent scores in this series anyway, so it’s definitely a good thing for us going forward. It’s something we’re going to commit to for sure.”Sciver added: “I’m feeling really good about being back and really positive about being back with this team and with a new coach who’s really helped us to see a different way of playing.”Matthews was in no doubt that her side’s batting had continued to let them down, having posted totals of 165 and 118 in the first two matches, both of which England won by 142 runs.”Any time you come into an ODI series and the top score is 160, you’re probably missing out a bit with the bat,” Matthews said. “It’s definitely an area that we need to pay more attention to, find a way to score more runs on the whole, hopefully we can do that in the T20 series coming up. This series was disappointing but as a team I reckon we’ll learn from it a whole lot and hopefully we can take some of those learnings into the series we have coming up.”The sides play the first of five T20Is on Sunday in Antigua before moving on to Barbados for the remaining four.

Better than Jorgensen: Chelsea will regret letting "world-class" GK leave

Chelsea’s miserable form continues.

On Saturday evening, despite taking the lead inside ten minutes through Enzo Fernández, the Blues were beaten 2-1 at Villa Park, the late winner coming in the final minute of the 90.

This means Enzo Maresca’s side have now lost three consecutive Premier League away games, winning only two of their last ten league fixtures played anywhere, so now find themselves outside the Champions League places.

As the Blues’ woes rumble on, one rather important position epitomises their struggles.

Chelsea's goalkeeper issues

Saturday saw summer signing Filip Jorgensen start a third successive Premier League match in goal, although he won’t remember his trip to the Midlands fondly, letting Marco Asensio’s rather tame shot to squirm straight through him in the dying embers of the game.

Matt Law of the Telegraph labelled it a ‘howler’, Malik Ouzia of the Evening Standard described it as a ‘clanger [that] gifted Villa all three points’, while Maresa himself admitted he remains “always concerned” by Chelsea’s ongoing goalkeeper crisis.

That’s because, as noted by Chris Wilson of the Independent, this is not a new thing, stating that ‘Chelsea’s goalkeeping woes continue’.

Jorgensen is only donning the gloves because Robert Sanchez, who had started 21 of the first 23 Premier League matches this season, has been dropped following a string of high-profile errors.

The Spaniard was last seen in the league during the 3-1 defeat at Manchester City, in which Sanchez ‘endured a terrible performance’ in the words of GOAL, mere days after, as noted by Jacob Steinberg of the Guardian, he’d ‘added to his growing list of mistakes’ during the home win over Wolves.

Prior to the 3-0 defeat at Brighton, Maresca confirmed Jorgensen is now his starting Premier League goalkeeper at the moment, with Sanchez therefore set to feature in Conference League matches, the Blues face København at Parken in the first leg of their last 16 on Thursday week, but given how the pair are performing, this hierarchy certainly is not set in stone.

Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen

However, is Chelsea’s best goalkeeper, outperforming both Sánchez and Jörgensen, currently out on loan, a decision they’re surely living to regret as every week passes?

Chelsea's best goalkeeper is out on loan

As noted by Nizaar Kinsella of BBC Sport, Chelsea began the season with eight first-team goalkeepers on their books, before four of them, namely Gabriel Słonina, Eddie Beach, Kepa Arrizabalaga and, most notably, Đorđe Petrović, departed on loan.

Petrović joined Chelsea for a reported fee of £14m from the New England Revolution in August 2023, having been, as Tom Bogert of the Athletic put it, ‘the best goalkeeper in Major League Soccer’.

The stats certainly back up this claim; according to FBref, the Revs’ shot-stopper racked up the highest post-shot expected goals – goals allowed figure of any goalkeeper in MLS throughout the 2022 season, his figure of +13.1 at least three higher than the next-best on this list.

The Serbian arrived in West London to little fanfare but, by the end of last season, had established himself as Mauricio Pochettino’s first-choice, starting all 23 Premier League fixtures from ten December onwards, as well as the EFL Cup Final defeat to Liverpool.

However, surplus to requirements this season, Tom Weber of Football Transfers believes he was deemed ‘not good enough with the ball at his feet’ to play in a Maresca team, he therefore joined Strasbourg on loan in August, the other club owned by Todd Boehly’s group BlueCo.

Well, under new manager Liam Rosenior, les Bleu et Blanc are enjoying an excellent season, knocking on the door of European qualification, as outlined by Nick Hartland of Get French Football News, while Raphaël Jucobin of the Guardian notes that the 40-year-old manager has made a ‘big impression’ in the Alsace, but he’s not the only one.

Rosenior has described his goalkeeper as “world-class”, so let’s see how Petrović compares to the two misfits Chelsea decided to keep instead.

As outlined in the table, it’s actually Jorgensen whose statistics are the best, very marginally in most cases, albeit these are surely inflated by the fact he’s played against minnows such as FC Noah, Astana and Shamrock Rovers in the Conference League, as well as both Barrow and Morecambe in domestic cups.

For Petrović, two statistics are most telling. First, his post-shot expected goals – goals allowed figure of +4.8 is exponentially higher than both of Chelsea’s current goalkeepers, while the Serbian ranks fourth in Ligue 1 for this metric this season.

Also, Petrović’s pass completion % figure of 79.9% is higher than Sanchez’s and only marginally lower than that of Jorgensen, dismissing the notion that he could not have played out from the back to Maresca’s required level, underlining that the Blues made a mistake forcing him to depart on loan.

Desta forma, a provável escalação do Internacional para o confronto viria comDaniel; Mercado, Moledo, Vitão e Renê; Gabriel, Edenilson, Pedro Henrique, Alan Patrick e De Pena; David.

Kusal Mendis: 'One thing I emphasise is ensuring 100% is given in the field'

For the Gladiators captain, his team displaying high intensity on the field has been a non-negotiable

Kusal Mendis scored a half-century against Colombo Stars•Sri Lanka Cricket

The perennial runners-up of the Lanka Premier League, Galle Gladiators, have had an indifferent start to this season’s LPL, but under new leadership they look to be steadily building up a head of steam that they hope will take them over the final hurdle this time around. They have two wins and three losses this season. Aside from a one-sided five-wicket loss to Kandy Falcons, the Gladiators gave Jaffna Kings an early tournament scare and then were pipped at the post in a high-scoring encounter against Colombo Stars. In the first, it was the batting that let them down and in the second their bowlers failed to defend a target of 194. But one consistent feature across each of their games has been their high intensity in the field. For captain Kusal Mendis, it is this which has been a non-negotiable under his captaincy.”Aside from batting and bowling, one thing I emphasise is ensuring 100% is given in the field,” he said during an online media briefing. “Because with the former two it’s hard to ensure things go your way, but with fielding it’s something you’re completely in control of. Fielding well means you’re about 70% of the way towards winning a game.”In other aspects however, Mendis takes a more laidback attitude to leadership, choosing to trust in his team-mates to deliver on their roles. A role he seems to have adopted from Gladiators’ head coach and former Pakistan wicketkeeper Moin Khan.”As a coach he doesn’t get too involved during the games; when it comes to bowling or fielding changes, he doesn’t get very involved. It’s only during a timeout that he’ll give his input. As a captain I’m happy to work with him as he tends to be positive in his feedback, while any suggestions are merely suggestions as opposed to outright demands. I’m very happy with him and how he handles the team.”Both Mendis’ and Khan’s approach seemed to reap rich dividends in Gladiators’ last match against Stars, when Mendis batted through the innings, stitching together partnerships with potential future Sri Lankan stars Thanuka Dabare and Lahiru Udara, as they piled up 193 runs.”I just told them to play their normal game, to not let it get into their heads, and just play like it’s a club game. For me it takes a lot of the pressure off when you have batters who play like that. In the last two games, it’s just been a matter of supporting them. Yesterday I was only able to get to 50 because Dabare took on the scoring burden early on. My goal is usually to bat out as many overs as possible and play the anchor.”Gladiators would ultimately lose that game, but Mendis isn’t reading too much into it, putting much of his side’s inability to keep things tight down the heavy dew which had descended on Pallekele. Jaffna captain Thisara Perera had earlier commented on how the dew had been akin to hosing down the ball with water, a sentiment Mendis concurred with.”We were looking at winning the toss and bowling first, but we couldn’t do that. Fortunately I and the rest of the batters were able to put a good total – 193 is a very good score in T20s. With the dew it’s not easy to bowl with the slower bowlers. There was considerably more dew than you would expect usually. I think we even changed the ball it was so bad. That was probably the reason why our bowlers missed their lengths some time.”Dew however will likely be less of a concern going forward, as from Saturday onwards the action moves to Colombo, where Mendis and Co. will be hoping to iron out the kinks and finally get their hands on a trophy that has narrowly eluded them so far.

– VEJA A TABELA DO BRASILEIRÃO

Forget Osula: Newcastle's 19-year-old starlet can spell the end for Wilson

Newcastle United’s campaign hangs in the balance.

Injuries have soured the mood in the build-up to next week’s Carabao Cup final. Lewis Hall looks to be out for the campaign, while Sven Botman has returned to the medical room once again, joining fellow centre-back Jamal Lascelles, who hasn’t featured at all this season. Anthony Gordon is also suspended after being shown a red card in the FA Cup defeat against Brighton.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. Eddie Howe’s side have made their second final in three years and stand a great chance of lifting the trophy, with Liverpool sure to be fatigued after a potentially gruelling second-leg Champions League tie with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday evening.

Newcastle United managerEddieHowe

Alexander Isak’s recent fitness worries present a concern, but fears have been allayed after the free-scoring sensation was withdrawn against the Seagulls.

He should be ready to take on the Reds. And let’s hope so too, with Callum Wilson flattering to deceive as he ostensibly approaches the final stretch of his Magpies journey.

Callum Wilson's future at Newcastle

Wilson has been a fantastic servant for Newcastle, joining from Howe’s Bournemouth for £20m in 2020 and scoring 49 goals across just 118 appearances, adding 11 assists.

Once among the most prolific finishers in Europe, Wilson is nearing the end of his Newcastle contract and it looks like Howe might be gearing up to part ways, with his impact negligible this season.

33 years old, it makes sense for the parties to separate.

The Athletic’s Chris Waugh confirmed in February that Newcastle have the option to extend Wilson’s deal by an extra year, but given his injury issues and loss of potency in front of goal, this may not be the wisest decision.

There remains hope 21-year-old William Osula, signed from Sheffield United for £15m last summer, will come good after a slow start, but Howe may actually find a homegrown forward who could be the perfect Wilson replacement.

The Newcastle teen who could replace Wilson

Newcastle need to strengthen this summer, putting Howe’s squad in an even better position, ready to attack multiple fronts – one of which will hopefully be among Europe’s elite.

In The Pipeline

Osula, who has made ten substitute appearances in the Premier League this season and startlingly hasn’t even taken a single shot, averaging 2.4 touches per game, as per Sofascore, has now proven himself worthy to be Isak’s understudy.

However, Ben Parkinson might have the minerals to do a job.

Newcastle youngster Ben Parkinson

Parkinson, 19, has already featured once for Newcastle’s first team and has provided a consistent striking outlet for the youth side, posting 27 goals and seven assists from 73 matches across U18 and U21 levels. He’s said it himself: “I love scoring goals.”

He’s positionally fluid and ambipedal, though has enjoyed his most potent success this term as the U21s centre-forward, firing home eight goals from 13 matches, providing one assist too.

Though he’s been absent since January with an injury, Parkinson is slated for an imminent return and will be looking to make an appearance or two among the seniors before the campaign reaches its conclusion.

Correspondent Jordan Cronin hailed the teenager as one of the “standouts” during an U21 victory back in December, alongside Botman as the Dutchman hit the final strides of his rehabilitation.

All the pointers suggest he may be a real star down the line, and with such a promising strike record, Howe might just find a prolific new version of Wilson to galvanise the Toon fanbase.

A bigger mistake than Minteh: Newcastle must rue selling "expensive" star

South Australia left-arm quick Spencer Johnson has vaulted onto Australia’s Ashes radar after being named in a 14-man Australia A squad to tour New Zealand in April alongside a mix of current Test squad members and long-term Test hopefuls with the mid-year England tour in mind.Peter Handscomb, who is currently in Australia’s Test XI in India, as well as India squad members Matt Renshaw and Mitchell Swepson, have been named but there were some notable absentees. Australia’s selectors opted to allow some recent Australia A and Test representatives to go to England to play in the County Championship as part of their Ashes bids rather than be pulled out of county deals to play two four-day games in Lincoln with Dukes balls in the first two weeks of April.Johnson, 26, has burst onto the selectors’ radar since starring in his maiden BBL season for Brisbane Heat. He has since made his Sheffield Shield debut for South Australia and taken bags of 6 for 87 and 7 for 47 in his first two first-class games. Young Victoria seamer Mitchell Perry has also been rewarded for his outstanding form having taken 19 wickets in his last three Shield games.Johnson and Perry are part of a bevy of seam bowlers in the A squad including Wes Agar, Xavier Bartlett, and Joel Paris while Swepson is the only spinner selected having not played a Test on the India tour. Leading Shield wicket-takers Michael Neser and Mark Steketee have not been selected for Australia A as both have extensive experience playing in England already.Related

The same thinking applies to leading Shield runscorer Cameron Bancroft and fringe Test opener Marcus Harris who both played in the 2019 Ashes series and remain in the selectors’ Ashes thinking with discussions to be had over what Australia’s best opening combination could be in England.Bancroft is in career-best form having scored four Shield centuries this season, and six in the last 12 months, as well as plundered runs in limited-overs cricket for WA and Perth Scorchers. But he has already played 34 first-class matches in England over five separate seasons there. Harris has also scored two Shield hundreds this season and is set to head back to Gloucestershire at the start of April having scored seven first-class centuries in England.Another West Australia opener Sam Whiteman, who was player of the match in last year’s Shield final, has also not been selected as he has signed to play the full county season with Northamptonshire.Tasmania left-hander Tim Ward is set to open for Australia A in New Zealand alongside Renshaw with South Australia’s Henry Hunt not selected despite being an Australia A regular in recent years and scoring a century on the tour of Sri Lanka last year. The selectors have also taken a long-term view with the batting group with 18-year-old West Australian Teague Wyllie, 20-year-old Victoria left-hander Campbell Kellaway and 24-year-old South Australia batter Nathan McSweeney selected for the tour to learn from alongside the experience of Handscomb and Renshaw.Veteran Queensland wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson has been rewarded for his outstanding form at Shield level and for Australia A on last year’s tour of Sri Lanka having been named as the squad’s sole wicketkeeper. Josh Inglis is touring with Australia’s ODI squad to India just prior the A series in New Zealand but is still highly regarded as a Test prospect behind incumbent Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey.Chair of selectors George Bailey noted it was an opportunity to expose a younger group to different conditions.”We are committed to the continued expansion of the Australia A program and these games are specifically designed to expose these players to conditions they may not experience in Australia,” Bailey siad.”With an Ashes this winter and a tour of New Zealand early next year, this is a great opportunity for this group to perform in similar environments to those countries.”Having Pete Handsomb, Matt Renshaw, Mitch Swepson and Jimmy Peirson will add experience as senior players who can impart their knowledge of different conditions.”The Australia A squad will be coached by current Australia assistant Andre Borovec. Former Sri Lanka Test batter Thilan Sameraweera will also tour as the batting consultant with Scott Prestwidge looking after the bowling group having been part of the coaching staff with Australia’s women’s team during their recent World Cup triumph in South Africa. The tour of New Zealand will also be reciprocated with Australia hosting New Zealand A for two four-day games and three 50-over matches to be played in Australia’s northern states in September this year.Australia A squad to tour New Zealand: Wes Agar, Xavier Bartlett, Aaron Hardie, Peter Handscomb, Spencer Johnson, Campbell Kellaway, Nathan McSweeney, Joel Paris, Mitch Perry, Jimmy Peirson, Matthew Renshaw, Mitchell Swepson, Tim Ward, Teague Wyllie
