Brook's unbeaten century gives Sunrisers enough to trump Knight Riders

Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh gave KKR a chance after SRH put up the biggest total of the season so far, but they fell well short in the end

Hemant Brar14-Apr-20232:28

Moody: Brook is a sensational talent in all formats

Harry Brook put behind a string of low scores with an unbeaten 55-ball 100 that included imperious hitting against pace and calculated strike rotation against spin. Aiden Markram was equally destructive, scoring 50 off 26 balls, as Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 228 for 4, the highest total of IPL 2023 so far.In response, Kolkata Knight Riders were 96 for 5 in the 11th over and in need of a miracle for the third game in a row. Nitish Rana’s 41-ball 75 kept their hopes alive, and with 58 required from the last three overs, they had Rinku Singh and Shardul Thakur – their miracle-makers from the previous two games – in the middle. Rinku fought hard with an unbeaten 58 off 31 but this time, it wasn’t to be.Brook shows his classComing into this game, Brook had 29 runs in three innings at a strike rate of 74.35. But one felt it was only a matter of time before he stepped up. On Friday, he started by hitting the first ball of the innings, bowled by Umesh Yadav, through the covers for four. He picked up two more fours in the over, pulling and scooping the bowler with little fuss.Against Lockie Ferguson, he exposed his stumps and dispatched a slow full toss to the cover boundary. He used the same strategy in Umesh’s next over with even better returns – two back-to-back sixes. Thanks to Brook, Sunrisers raced to 43 for no loss in three overs.Russell’s double-strikeAndre Russell hadn’t bowled this season so far, but it took him just one ball to make an impact. While Brook seemed unstoppable, Mayank Agarwal was struggling. Russell ended his agony by having him caught at short third for 9 off 13 balls. Rahul Tripathi hit a couple of fours but ended up top-edging a pull on the last ball of the over, giving Russell his second wicket.Aiden Markram took out his big strokes when Harry Brook slowed down•Associated Press

Markram takes overIn their spinners, Knight Riders found a way to keep Brook quiet. In the first six overs of the innings, Brook had smashed five fours and two sixes. In the next eight – seven of which were bowled by the spinners – he didn’t find a single boundary, and instead focused on rotating the strike. That, though, didn’t mean Knight Riders could breathe easy. Markram took the baton and ransacked 42 off 22 balls against the spinners. He was severe on Suyash Sharma, in particular, taking him for two sixes and a four in the 12th over of the innings. In the next over, he hit successive balls from Varun Chakravarthy for a four and a six, the second shot bringing up his half-century off 25 balls. He tried to go big on the next ball as well but holed out at deep midwicket.Brook brings up his hundredIn the 15th over, Knight Riders re-introduced seam in the form of Ferguson. And Brook was back hitting boundaries, sending the bowler for four fours and a six in a 23-run over. Abhishek Sharma, meanwhile, took over Markram’s role and looted 32 off 16 against spin. He didn’t even spare Sunil Narine, hitting him for a four and a six in the 17th over. Those were the only two boundaries Narine conceded in his 4-0-28-0. Abhishek faced just one ball of pace, and was out on that.Brook kept picking up the occasional boundary, and moved to 95 off 52 with one over left. He was tiring by then but found just enough energy to hobble a couple of twos and a single to bring up his hundred.1:59

Did KKR get their plan for Narine’s overs wrong?

Knight Riders start poorlyBhuvneshwar Kumar dealt Knight Riders an early blow when Rahmanullah Gurbaz sliced the third ball of the chase to deep third. In the fourth over, Marco Jansen dented them further by removing Venkatesh Iyer and Narine off successive deliveries. Iyer, who came in as Impact Player for Suyash, hit a couple of boundaries before miscuing one to Markram at mid-on. Narine was cramped for room and was also taken at mid-on, leaving Knight Riders 20 for 3.Nitish Rana’s counter-attackIt looked like Knight Riders would surrender without a fight, but their captain Rana resuscitated the chase. In the sixth over, he hit Umran Malik for 4, 6, 4, 4, 4, 6. Not every shot came off the middle of the bat, but the 28-run over helped Knight Riders end the powerplay on a solid 62 for 3.N Jagadeesan gave Rana good support with his 36 off 21 before Mayank Markande had him caught at deep midwicket. Russell, who had walked off twice during the first innings with cramps, didn’t last long either, holing out in the legspinner’s next over.At that stage, Knight Riders needed 133 in 9.5 overs. Rana and Rinku kept the fight on, adding 69 in 6.2 overs for the sixth wicket. The pair was also helped by some lapses in the field – both Rana and Rinku were dropped once each, and later, Thakur was dropped twice. With 70 needed from 23 balls, Rana got two full tosses in a row from T Natarajan. He smashed the first one for a six but ended up hitting the second to sweeper cover, where Washington Sundar held on to the chance.Rinku hit three fours off Natarajan in the 19th over to reduce the equation to 32 needed off six, but as Rana himself said after the game, miracles don’t happen every game.

Arteta loves him: Arsenal now set to make £101m bid for "ridiculous" striker

Arsenal now intend to make a £101m offer for a “ridiculous” striker, who Mikel Arteta is a big fan of, according to a report.

Gunners keen to sign a striker this summer

There have been repeated calls for the Gunners to sign a striker for quite some time, and it looks as though they could finally make a move for one in the summer transfer window, having identified a number of key targets.

The interest in Inter’s Marcus Thuram has recently been stepped up, with Arteta’s side moving ahead of Premier League title rivals Liverpool in the race to sign the Frenchman, although there may also be competition from Chelsea.

Arsenal very keen on signing £40m defender who models his game on Timber

The Gunners really want to sign a defender who was mentored by one of Mikel Arteta’s key players.

ByDominic Lund Mar 18, 2025

Two of the strikers most widely linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium are Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, with Fabrizio Romano revealing the former is right at the top of the list.

“Big, big, massive proposals will come to the table for Alexander Isak.

“Arsenal will be there, Liverpool are also there. For Arsenal, he’s the absolute top target, Sesko is the other name on the list.

“They are the two main names.”

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsakcelebrates scoring their second goal

A new update has now emerged on Arsenal’s pursuit of Isak, with a report from Spain revealing they now intend to submit an offer of up to €120m (£101m) for the striker, who they are determined to sign.

The Gunners’ interest has grown in recent times, not least because Arteta is someone who believes Isak can bring plenty to the Gunners and is a big fan of the Sweden international, and negotiations could be stepped up when the season comes to a close.

It will not be easy to get a deal done, given how important the 25-year-old is to Newcastle’s project, but the north Londoners plan to submit an offer it would be difficult to refuse.

"Ridiculous" Isak leads Newcastle to cup glory

It has been a fantastic campaign for the Swedish striker, who has scored 23 goals in all competitions, and he was on the scoresheet once again in Newcastle’s historic EFL Cup triumph on Sunday, with the Magpies ending their 70-year trophy drought.

As such, it is little wonder Arsenal are so keen on the former Real Sociedad striker, who has also received high praise from members of the media.

Given that Isak has proven himself as a top-level striker, the monumental £101m fee could be justifiable, particularly considering a world-class forward is perhaps the missing piece of the jigsaw for Arteta’s side, who have had to rely on Mikel Merino to lead the line recently.

However, it remains to be seen whether the forward’s first taste of silverware in England motivates him to want to bring more success to Newcastle, who are currently under no pressure to sell, given that he remains contracted until 2028.

Liverpool hit gold on "magic" Klopp signing now worth even more than Trent

It looks like Liverpool’s anticipated Premier League title is going to be tinged with a fair share of poignancy.

Last summer, Jurgen Klopp stepped down after almost nine years at the Anfield helm. It hurt, but Liverpool endured and are charging toward glory unforeseen by most all observers at the beginning of the campaign.

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold with Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool’s hopeful triumph is turning into a farewell, too. One of the club’s very own is getting ready to try his hand at something new. It’s beginning to look like it’s done and dusted.

Farewell, Trent Alexander-Arnold

The most painful part is that if you really stop and think, you can see the logic. Liverpool’s vice-captain, Trent Alexander-Arnold, is on the brink of agreeing to a pre-contract agreement with Real Madrid, and it hurts.

It hurts because this is one of the city’s own, nurtured from a young age to become a mainstay in Merseyside’s most successful team in several generations.

Under Arne Slot, Liverpool and Alexander-Arnold are on course to win the Premier League, firm favourites with a 12-point lead and just nine games left to play. He’s already lifted the title before, one of the core pillars of Klopp’s dynasty.

It hurts, but it’s hardly a shock. Alexander-Arnold has been quiet on the contract front for the campaign, and at 26 is entering his ostensible prime, having conquered the full gamut. Real Madrid are not a divisional rival (though they have been the Reds’ European bane in recent years), and they are the world’s most prestigious outfit besides.

The reasoning is clear. Alexander-Arnold wants greatness. We may not agree with his call, but it is his call.

Now, Slot needs Liverpool’s other prominent creative players to step up.

Liverpool's next Trent needs to step up

Liverpool are going to mourn the departure of their boyhood hero, but Alexander-Arnold’s decision will at least be attenuated somewhat by the likely Premier League triumph and the overload of high-class quality to keep Slot’s system purring over the coming years.

Market Movers

Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?

Conor Bradley, it’s your time. The 21-year-old right-back has been waiting in the wings for over a year now and has more than enough quality to rise to a regular starting role in the years to come.

Noise regarding Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong is surely going to intensify as Alexander-Arnold’s fate is sealed. Liverpool sources suggest discussions have already been held with the Dutchman’s agents, and he could join Bradley in Slot’s backline in just a few months.

However, FSG can’t and won’t expect a right-back to replicate Alexander-Arnold’s almost preternatural creative powers. Other Liverpool stars are going to need to step up in that regard, Dominik Szoboszlai chief among them.

Dominik Szoboszlai celebrates for Liverpool

Szoboszlai, 23, has been among Liverpool’s most improved players this season, really coming into his own since the turn of the calendar year. Liverpool signed the Hungarian from RB Leipzig for a £60m fee in June 2023, an essential part of the crucial midfield rebuild.

His ceaseless work-rate, well-oiled engine and tenacious attitude have won over the Reds fans, with Liverpool content creator Asim Mahmood even hailing him as a “champion performer” who invariably puts in an “absolute monster of a shift.”

He needs more in the output department, though, for sure. Especially now that Trent’s leaving. Across all competitions, the attacking midfielder has scored seven goals and provided six assists across 40 matches, which is a middling return at best.

Ranking among the bottom 36% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Premier League for assists and the top 19% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref, you can see where the room for improvement lies.

Szoboszlai will need to make more of his technical gifts next season, not just providing more of a threat in the final third but taking Alexander-Arnold’s mantle and supplying the forwards with consistent creative support.

In fairness, there are signs that the £120k-per-week talent has made inroads on the playmaking front since Slot replaced Klopp, creating more big chances in the Premier League this season.

It’s perhaps exciting that the peak of his high-ceilinged potential is yet untapped. Even so, Szoboszlai is one of Liverpool’s most valuable players, with Transfermarkt recording his current price tag at about £68m.

This is even higher than Alexander-Arnold’s value of roughly £63m (Transfermarkt do not consider the player’s contractual situation when making an appraisal).

It highlights the calibre of player Slot has on his hands at Liverpool, and maybe emphasises why Liverpool will be okay when Alexander-Arnold lays down his vice-captaincy and moves to Madrid.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is substituted

Once hailed for his “magic” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Szoboszlai has everything he needs to become one of the greatest attacking midfielders in the modern Premier League.

He’s already regarded to be among the most valuable on the continent, and with Alexander-Arnold leaving, he will need to lead the step-up to strengthen Liverpool’s playmaking department.

No domingo (14), encontra o Red Bull Bragantino no Estádio do Morumbi. Caso Rafinha não retorne, Igor Vinícius deve ser uma peça importante para que o time consiga se reerguer na tabela da competição.

Ollie Robinson: 'Australia were unwilling to go toe-to-toe with us'

Fast bowler claims England made all the running at Edgbaston and will come harder at Lord’s

Ollie Robinson has stepped up his war of words with Australia’s cricket establishment by claiming it is the visitors who will have to change their ways to keep up with England’s Bazballers in the second Test at Lord’s, despite Australia having taken the series lead with their two-wicket win at Edgbaston this week.Writing in his new column for Wisden.com, Robinson said he was surprised by Australia’s unwillingness “to go toe-to-toe with us”, adding that Brendon McCullum, England’s head coach, had told the team in his post-match address that they had made all the running in the game and that “it feels like we’ve won, lads”.”He just said, “Lads, I’m immensely proud of the efforts that you’ve put in, we’ve made the game what it was,” Robinson related. “We were so close to pulling off an unbelievable victory. We played all the cricket in the game. If it wasn’t for us, the Australians wouldn’t have even had a chance to win.”Robinson added: “We’re trying to create memories and be that team that everyone still speaks about in 20-30 years’ time. We’ve entertained the world, and we’ve put the Aussies on the back foot. For him to say that after a loss is quite significant for us.”Robinson’s comments come after his run-in with Usman Khawaja during the Edgbaston Test, in which he had told him “f**k off, you f***ing prick” after bowling him for 141 in the first innings, before James Anderson had to pull him away from another confrontation during his second-innings 65.Those incidents, and Robinson’s mid-match remark that he “doesn’t care” what people think of his on-field attitude, drew an angry retort from Australia’s former opening bat, Matthew Hayden, who described him as a “forgettable cricketer”, and suggested that his opinions were not in keeping with his talents.Related

Ponting: If Robinson hasn't learned already … then he's a slow learner

“He’s a fast bowler that is bowling 124kph nude nuts and he’s got a mouth from the south,” Hayden told SEN Radio in Australia. “Someone like him, you can just go, ‘Brother, I’m coming at ya’. Davey Warner can do that, right. He can just say, ‘You’re bowling 120′.”Hayden’s former captain, Ricky Ponting – whom Robinson had referenced as an example of a previous Ashes sledger – also took aim at his comments.”This England cricket team hasn’t played against Australia, and they’ll find out pretty quickly what playing Ashes cricket and playing against a good Australian cricket team is all about,” Ponting said on an ICC podcast. “And if Robinson hasn’t learned that already after last week, then he’s a slow learner.”On the Khawaja incident, Robinson told Wisden.com: “I didn’t realise the Ussie send-off was such a big thing until I got off the pitch to find my phone blowing up with mates texting me and it all going off.””I just got caught up in the moment,” he added. “I was desperate for a wicket; I hadn’t bowled that well in the first innings. Obviously Ussie was the big wicket, he was playing beautifully. It was nothing against Ussie, it was just one of those things, I got caught up in the moment and let myself go.”It was certainly an interesting week for me, taking Broady’s mantle as Australia’s public enemy number one!” Robinson added, referencing a tweet from Fox Cricket that described him as the “No.1 villain”.Broad – whose refusal to walk in the Trent Bridge Test in 2013 was the major flashpoint of that year’s Ashes action – responded to the same tweet, saying: “No1 Villain?! I can’t have lost that tag already can I?! Disappointing.”Looking ahead to next week’s second Test at Lord’s, Robinson added that England “know what’s at stake” but promised that “you’re going to see us come harder and harder” in their bid to turn around the scoreline and win the Ashes for the first time since 2015.”It’s not just the game and the result on the line, but also the faith that we’re asking the English public to have in us for playing in this new way,” he added. “I have faith in this team that, even if we went 2-0 down, we could still win 3-2, because of the style of cricket that we’re playing.”

Sussex batting thrives against stragglers Derbyshire on Hove opening day

Clark, Haines add 150 for first wicket to set up Sussex’s strong position

Tom Haines added 150 for the first wicket with Tom Clark as Sussex thrived at Hove•Getty Images

Sussex 376 for 7 (Clark 96, Haines 86, Carter 56, Hudson-Prentice 52*) vs DerbyshireTom Clark top-scored with 96 and three of his team-mates also made half-centuries as Sussex took the first-day honours against second division strugglers Derbyshire at Hove.Having put Sussex in, Derbyshire squandered any advantage offered by a pitch with a covering of live grass during a careless first session at the 1st Central County Ground when they conceded 150 runs without parting openers Clark and Tom Haines.Haines fell for 86 to the first ball after lunch and Clark went on to a season’s best before both Ollie Carter and Fynn Hudson-Prentice passed fifty for the fifth time this season after tea as Sussex closed on 376 for seven.Sussex have yet to lose this season but badly need a second win to strengthen their hopes of promotion in the LV= Insurance County Championship and would have been pleased with their day’s work, although Clark and Haines will be disappointed not to have got to three figures.Despite its green tinge the surface is dry and few balls misbehaved all day. Off-spinner Alex Thomson picked up three wickets for the first time in a year after being called into the attack as early as the 17th over, but the Derbyshire seamers found little help from either the surface or the Kookaburra ball being used for the second time this summer.Skipper Leus du Plooy employed six bowlers in the morning session without reward as Sussex’s two left-handers made serene progress at more than five runs an over. Haines was the more aggressive, hitting 15 fours, and it was a surprise when he pushed forward to the first ball after lunch as Thomson found a modicum of turn and edged to slip.It was the start of a productive afternoon for Derbyshire who bowled with more discipline, although they were helped by some questionable shot selection by Sussex’s batters.Skipper Tom Alsop drove loosely at Suranga Lakmal and was caught at slip and James Coles, who’d just hit Thomson for a straight six, tried a repeat and instead holed out to long on.Clark and Carter added 55 for the fourth wicket with few alarms and Clark was on course for his first hundred of the season when he tried to drive Thomson down the ground and picked out Du Plooy, who took a comfortable catch at long off. Clark hit 14 boundaries but he knew he’d missed out on a sizeable score as he trudged off.George Scrimshaw, playing his first Championship match for nearly a year, wasn’t afraid to test out the middle of the pitch and was rewarded in the 78th over when Dan Ibrahim, who had struggled for fluency, wafted at a bouncer and was caught at backward square leg.Carter has been Sussex’s most consistent batter and in his unfussy but effective way he passed fifty for third successive match only to fall to a leg-side strangle and give Scrimshaw his second wicket.Nathan McAndrew lost his off stump to Lakmal when Derbyshire took the new ball, having been dropped at second slip by Haider Ali off Sam Conners in the previous over. But former Derbyshire all-rounder Fynn Hudson-Prentice hit Conners for four successive fours on his way to a 46-ball half-century and even nightwatchman Ari Karvelas enjoyed himself, lofting Anuj Dal over the pavilion roof just before stumps.
