Jofra Archer: 'No sense doing too much, too soon' as he builds into comeback across formats

Fast bowler says more than one Ashes Test would be ‘bonus’ as he builds across formats

Jofra Archer says that he has already surpassed his ambitions in battling back from persistent injury to resume his England career, but admits that he would consider it a “bonus” if he is able to feature in more than one Ashes Test this summer.Archer, 27, is in the midst of an encouraging but cautious return to action across formats, having claimed an impressive 13 wickets at 16.92 in four ODIs and one T20I since making his international comeback for England against South Africa in January. That haul includes a career-best of 6 for 40 in Kimberley last month, and he is likely to feature in one of England’s two remaining T20Is against Bangladesh in Dhaka this week, before linking up with Mumbai Indians for the forthcoming IPL.And while the demands on his time and availability are likely to be onerous in the coming months – with the IPL season bleeding straight into England’s Test summer against Ireland and Australia in June and July – it is vastly preferable to Archer’s status this time last year, when his gruelling recovery from two elbow operations was scuppered by a stress fracture of the back.”Sometimes you’ve still got that little feeling in the back of your mind that you’re still not ready yet,” Archer said. “But I just put that behind me and, whatever happens, happens. If you’re supposed to get injured again, then there’s nothing you can do about it. But till that time comes I’m just going to give everything I’ve got.”Coming back and playing cricket for England again means I have already done what I wanted to do. I said 18 months ago I was going to be back, and now I am back hopefully I have a long career, so it makes no sense doing too much too soon.”To that end, Archer has committed to taking it easy in his final outing of the Bangladesh series, for all that England are 0-1 down after their six-wicket loss in Chittagong on Thursday.”In Bangladesh I’m not going to be charging in trying to bowl 95mph,” he said. “It sounds a little bit bad but wickets where you put everything in and you don’t get anything out, you’re just putting yourself at risk.”There is still a bit more rust I need to take off, but for now I am happy with how it’s gone, with how the body has held up. There is always more in the tank but I’m progressing and peaking at the right time.Related

Phil Salt 'frustrated' after failing to seize his chance for leading role

“There’s a lot of cricket coming up and I’m just doing everything I can to stay on the park. I don’t think I can play all of it, it probably wouldn’t be sensible to, but whatever the medical team tells me I can do, I’m all for it.”Although he may not be back on the field in a full-time capacity just yet, Archer says that he has recognised a familiar sense of dislocation this winter, with an itinerary that has taken him from the Lions tour in the UAE before Christmas, to South Africa for the SA20, and onto his England comeback. And now, after Bangladesh, he’ll be swiftly heading for the IPL, where he hopes the shorter demands of the 20-over format will help to step up his comeback.”I think you know when you’re in the cricket mode when you actually don’t know what day of the week it is,” he said. “To be honest, I don’t even know what’s going on. But I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen at the IPL. Hopefully I can play back-to-back, or fly and play. I don’t think it’ll be as heavily restricted as when I first started. I hope not. It’s only four overs and it’s definitely not as taxing as a 50-over game, but the medical team knows best.”My time’s gone by a little bit slowly but it’s all right, you just have to find ways to keep yourself occupied,” he added. “There’s no reason to be upset about it or anything. I’ve had a lot of downtime before, it doesn’t bother me that much.”Further afield, however, Archer recognises the opportunity that is presenting itself in 2023, with a home Ashes summer followed by England’s defence of the 50-over World Cup – the same twin peaks with which he announced his arrival on the international stage in his maiden England summer four years ago.”It’s pretty similar actually,” Archer said. “If you caught form at the right time in 2019, you probably would have been able to carry it throughout the whole summer, whereas now you’ve got a couple of months before the World Cup.””Hopefully this summer will have the opportunity to surpass it, but I don’t think there’ll be many other summers of cricket that are better than that. If I can play one game this summer, I’ll be happy. If I play more than one, that’s a bonus.”

Pujara prepares to play with, not against, Smith…for now

The Australian arrives this week for a three-match spell with Sussex ahead of the WTC final and Ashes

In March they were facing each other in Ahmedabad and next month they will do so again at The Oval, but for the next few weeks Cheteshwar Pujara and Steven Smith will be team-mates at Sussex.Smith joins the county this week for his somewhat controversial pre-Ashes stint, which will see him play three County Championship matches in the build-up to the World Test Championship final against India and then the five-match series against England.Related

Pujara takes on captaincy with run-scoring prowess undimmed

During the Test series in India earlier this year, Smith helped conjure the dismissal of Pujara at a vital time in Indore, both with his field settings as he captained in the absence of Pat Cummins, and then the remarkable catch at leg slip. Now Pujara will be the captain as he leads Sussex and will form one of the more formidable No. 3 and 4 combinations county cricket could see with Smith, although the battle to come won’t be far from the mind.”We have spoken, but most of the time we have played against each other. It is never for the same team, so it will be exciting to have him in the same side,” Pujara told after the recent match against Gloucestershire. “I will try and get his thoughts, try and know him a little better.Cheteshwar Pujara has been in fine form

“We will be playing WTC final, so it will be mixed feelings. On the field we always have good battles, but off the field we are good friends.”While the signing of Smith has sparked a debate about whether the county game is being too accommodating to the Australians ahead of the Ashes, it has also been talked up as a great opportunity for Sussex’s young players to work alongside a great of the game.”He’s a great influence to have in the team,” Pujara, currently the leading run-scorer in Division Two, said. “Will be looking forward to having him in the dressing room and trying to have a chat with him, learn from him, see how he prepares because he has a lot of experience [and] the amount of runs he has scored in Test cricket.”All of us are looking forward to having him here and sharing his experience. He has a lot of knowledge about the game so it will be nice to have his inputs.”Smith’s three-match spell with Sussex is also set to bring him up against Marnus Labuschagne when they face Glamorgan.

Jack Haynes, Pat Brown see off Lancashire despite Jos Buttler's best efforts

Mitchell Santner plays key role as Worcestershire cruise to victory with 2.2 overs to spare

Jos Buttler hit his highest Vitality Blast score of the summer but it proved in vain as Lancashire Lightning crashed to a seven-wicket setback against Worcestershire Rapids at New Road.England’s white-ball captain rescued his side from 38 for 4 by smashing 74 off 54 balls with two sixes and five fours. He clearly has a liking for the Rapids attack as his only other fifty in the competition this summer came against them at Blackpool. But Lightning were restricted to 164 for 8 with former England T20 player Pat Brown claiming three more wickets to take his tally for the campaign to 19. He received excellent support from Mitchell Santner and the New Zealand allrounder then clubbed his way to 49 off 27 balls as Worcestershire triumphed with 14 balls to spare.Jack Haynes showed his class in helping Santner add 81 in eight overs and he then pressed his foot on the accelerator in making a decisive 63 from 43 balls. The Rapids have now moved level on 12 points with Lancashire and they have a game in hand.Lancashire skipper Liam Livingstone opted to bat after the toss but his side ran into early trouble. Phil Salt smashed the second ball of the innings from Dillon Pennington over the midwicket boundary but it was his only scoring stroke. He went for another legside hit later in the over and skied a catch to Usama Mir at cover.Santner shared the new ball and also made a breakthrough as Luke Wells attempted a reverse sweep and was lbw. Pennington failed to hold onto a return catch from Dane Vilas but it did not prove a costly miss as Pat Brown struck twice in the final over of the powerplay.Vilas pulled Brown straight into the hands of midwicket and the next delivery accounted for Daryl Mitchell as he nicked a ball of extra bounce through to keeper Ben Cox.Lancashire were perched uneasily on 38 for 4 but Buttler and Rob Jones batted sensibly to lead a recovery. At first they were content to work the ball around against the Rapids spinners but gradually accelerated.Butler followed up his half-century in Lancashire’s win over Worcestershire at Southport by completing a 40-ball fifty with his fifth boundary, a delightful late cut at Brown’s expense.Jones opened his shoulder to clear the long off boundary against Brett D’Oliveira. But Santner broke a 98-run stand when Jones attempted a reverse sweep and only found the hands of Ed Pollock on the cover boundary.Josh Tongue then dismissed Buttler and Livingstone in an action-packed penultimate over. Butler’s fine knock ended on 74 when he holed out to cover and then Livingstone, who surprisingly held himself back until there were only 10 balls remaining, smashed his opening two deliveries for maximums. After a no-ball, Livingstone carved the third legitimate ball he faced to cover. And there was time for Brown to pick up his third wicket as Luke Wood found long-on.Jones held onto a diving catch at cover to dismiss D’Oliveira in Jack Blatherwick’s first over but Santner and Haynes took the game away from the Lightning during a stand of 81 in eight overs.Santner was particularly aggressive, striking Livingstone and Wells for maximums and there were also five fours in his 49 before he backed away to try and cut Wood and only feathered through to Buttler.Haynes then took over the mantle of chief aggressor and a regal cover drive off Tom Hartley enabled him to complete his half century. With Adam Hose also in good nick, the Rapids were on the verge of victory when Haynes holed out to backward square leg of Blatherwick.

Clinical Multan Sultans reach fourth successive PSL final

Zalmi will take on the winner of the first eliminator on Saturday in a bid to make the final

Usama Mir’s 2 for 16 in his four overs earned him the player-of-the-match award•Pakistan Super League

Multan Sultans breezed into their fourth straight Pakistan Super League final by defeating Peshawar Zalmi by seven wickets in a lopsided qualifier on Thursday.Sultans won the event in 2021 before losing to Lahore Qalandars in the finals of the last two editions.Babar Azam-led Zalmi will get another opportunity for a place in Monday’s final when they take on the winner of the eliminator between Islamabad United and Quetta Gladiators on Saturday.Opening batter Yasir Khan (54) and the in-form Usman Khan (36*) powered Sultans to 147-3 in 18.3 overs after Zalmi were restricted to below-par 146-7.In the absence of Afghanistan fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq, who was ruled out of the playoffs because of his international commitment, Zalmi’s bowlers struggled to defend a small total.Yasir provided a dominant opening stand of 61 with captain Mohammad Rizwan (15) and raised a match-wining half-century off 30 balls. Left-arm spinner Mehran Mumtaz (1-28) couldn’t make an impact in the power play but he finally had Yasir caught off his own bowling, in the 11th over, during his return spell.Usman, who became the first batter in PSL history to score two centuries in one season, was hardly troubled by pace, and Iftikhar Ahmed finished off the game with a quick-fire 22 off eight balls.Earlier, Zalmi struggled against pace and spin after Babar won the toss and elected to bat. David Willey had danger-man Saim Ayub caught at deep square leg in the first over and Mohammad Haris’ (22) below-par tournament continued when he edged fast bowler Mohammad Ali inside the power play.Babar, the tournament’s leading run-scorer, top-scored with 46 off 42 balls but spinners Usama Mir (2-16) and Ahmed (0-9) stifled the batters in the middle overs.Chris Jordan (2-28) had Babar clean bowled off a pacy yorker in the 13th over and the Englishman tied down batters in the death overs with his variations as Peshawar could score only 38 runs off the final five overs.

Jacob Bethell's best puts victory beyond Nottinghamshire's hopes

Dreary drew ensues after youngster stars for Warwickshire with career-best 93

ECB Reporters Network29-Apr-2024

Nottinghamshire 400 (Duckett 218, Haynes 74, Slater 65, Hannon-Dalby 5-78) and 75 for 1 drew with Warwickshire 361 (Bethell 93, Barnard 69, James 3-65, Pennington 3-74)Another stalemate landed in the ocean of early-season Vitality Championship draws as the match between Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire petered out at Edgbaston. In reply to 400 all out, Warwickshire extended their first innings to 361, Jake Bethell posting a career-best 93 (163 balls), before Nottinghamshire went in again and acquired 75 for one.As soon as Warwickshire reached 251, which they did with some comfort with five wickets down, the match was consigned to a draw, the home side’s fourth in four championship matches and Nottinghamshire’s third in four.It was a dreary conclusion to a match which delivered some excellence – Ben Duckett’s double-century and the seam bowling of Olly Hannon-Dalby and Dillon Pennington – but was ultimately smothered by a docile pitch and the loss of more than a day to rain. After Warwickshire resumed on the final morning on 175 for five, 76 short of the follow-on figure, Nottinghamshire needed to strike quickly but Bethell and Danny Briggs (37, 79) were soon collecting boundaries. Stubborn batting, allied to a pitch which stubbornly refused to deteriorate, drew the sting of a seam attack which bowled with a quality during this match to suggest they will cause batters a lot of problems in more helpful conditions.Bethell and Briggs added 85 in 23 overs to take their side to the requisite 251. Almost immediately, Briggs swatted Calvin Harrison to mid on where Freddie McCann entered the history books as the first former Papplewick & Linby CC player to take a catch as a substitute in first class cricket with the floodlights on at Edgbaston on a Monday.Bethell’s classy and composed innings ended seven short of a deserved maiden century when he edged Olly Stone to give the former Warwickshire player his first wicket back on his old patch. Bowling remained a joyless assignment though and Michael Burgess (43, 63 balls) and Aamer Jamal (40, 46) added 71 in 15 overs before the latter hammered a return catch to Lyndon James. After Hasan Ali chipped James into the covers, Hannon-Dalby settled in with his customary aplomb before running out of partners when Burgess mowed to mid off. James’ analysis had been upgraded from 0 for 57 to three for 63 in 18 balls.Nottinghamshire went into bat again at 2.54pm and filled the rest of a grey afternoon with batting practice. Duckett followed his 264-ball 218 with a six-ball seven when Hannon-Dalby trapped him lbw but Haseeb Hameed (41 not out, 69 balls) and Ben Slater enjoyed an outdoor net for the remaining two hours as the match fizzled out in a manner redolent of Nottinghamshire’s visit to Coventry in 1928 when they amassed 656 for three, four of the top five scoring centuries (only Arthur Carr missed out with a paltry 58) but their victory hopes were thwarted by a benign pitch, weather damage and obdurate batting by Warwickshire legends Tiger Smith and Bob Wyatt.
