Do attackers make the best coaches modern-day coaches?

The game of football has adapted immeasurably over the past few years, with teams across England appearing to be shifting toward a more fluid attacking philosophy. This has in turn seen as increase in creative and forward thinking ex-pro’s taking up roles as coaches or managers across the various leagues, with their knowledge and experience key in adapting to new philosophies.

Gustavo Poyet and Paolo di Canio have, in particular, been working wonders at their posts with Brighton and Hove Albion and Swindon Town, respectively, securing success for both of their clubs, whilst playing attractive, football. The Amex side in particular have been a breath of fresh air, moving up from League One, whilst sticking to their particular philosophy, in the face of an increased level of quality, in terms of opposition.

Its becoming a rather archaic view that teams down the domestic ladder play ‘kick-and-rush’ football, as the level of coaching and tactical know how within the footballing world increases, due in part to an increased exposure to the continental game. Swansea City have provided a real surprise this Premier League season, replicating their free-flowing, possession based plan in the English top-flight. It’s common to see promoted teams secure a shot at the big time, by playing the game the ‘right way’, and achieving success at Championship level, only to switch to a solid style, and negative, game plan upon their arrival in the Premier League. The Swans have bucked this trend, sticking to their 4-3-3, ‘keep the ball on the carpet’ philosophy, and although their form may have dipped slightly of late, the South Wales club will be a top-tier outfit next season.

Although Paulo Sousa and Roberto Martinez may have built the foundations for the club’s success, Brendan Rodgers has been a big influence, pushing the team on and aiding their development. The Welshman was himself an attack minded player in his short career, and as a result was deterred from playing the typical, and in some ways lazy, English style of football:

“I was a little winger or central midfield player, more technically gifted than pace and power. I played in Northern Ireland youth international teams and they were always teams set up to defend and to not have the ball. I was not that type of player and didn’t enjoy it.” Rodgers told The Independent.

“It was similar at Reading and I just felt there was a better way to play football and I knew there was British talent that could play that way. It’s a lot more difficult to coach players to play that way than just to kick the ball up the pitch. But that was my mission really as a young coach, to go and help players to be technically strong and understand tactically the game. That’s followed me from my very first step.”

It must be said that his words ring true at the Liberty Stadium, with the Swans sticking rigidly to their style, regardless of opposition. Sure there have been defeats at the hands of big clubs, but there have also been memorable victories such as the visit of Arsenal, often heralded as the holy grail of English creative football, who were played off the park by the men in white.

The pragmatic approach to football appears to be entering its twilight years, as the technical ability and pace of modern day players increases. The successes of Barcelona have influenced teams across Europe to crave attractive football, and as a result defensively motivated managers have struggled. With the employing of more and more attack orientated coaches, the beautiful game may become just that once more.

The 15 Premier League Players simply ‘wasting their career’ at their current club

Looking across the squad lists of various Premier League sides soon shows up players who are simply wasting their time at their current club. Whether they have the skill to achieve better things, aren’t getting the playing time, or are just a little out of their depth, there are plenty of names who should be looking to move on to further their career.

They may have arrived with great hopes and failed to live up to the billing, or quietly gone about their job without the praise they so deserve, but it’s fair to say that there are quite a few players who have outgrown their surroundings.

This is my list of 15 players who are wasting their time with their current employer. Some may seem harsh, but a footballer’s career is relatively short, so they need to play to the best of their ability, while they can.

Could Ba Be Heading Back To Upton Park?

West Ham have launched an ambitious £8m bid to re-sign Demba Ba from Newcastle United.

The Hammers are looking to strengthen their strike-force ahead of the new Premier League season and see Demba Ba as the perfect man to lead the line next campaign.

The striker enjoyed his previous time at West Ham, and although it was short, it was very promising. Demba Ba notched up seven goals in just 12 appearances.

The London club allowed Ba to leave as a free agent when they were relegated as David Sullivan did not want to pay a striker £50k whilst in the Championship. A decision that David Sullivan describes as ‘his biggest mistake in football’. It’s understandable that a relegated club would look to cut the pay bill, but had Sullivan have known just how good Demba Ba was, there is no doubt about it, Ba would have remained a Hammer.

Ba really did like playing for The Hammers; he appreciated the huge support from the fans, he liked London and also made some very good friends at the club. He still meets up with Carlton Cole whenever he plays in the capital and despite wayward rumours it wasn’t a straight forward decision to leave. But when the Chairman didn’t want to pay his wages he had to leave, and Ba decided to join Newcastle.

Demba Ba has been phenomenal in his first season at St. James’ Park, scoring 16 times. His goal scoring ability has caught the eye of most clubs, and the bad news for Newcastle is that he could leave for very cheap. In order for Newcastle to secure the services of Ba they had to put a buyout cause into his contract that would allow him to speak to any other club.

David Sullivan spoke about the contract and said: “I’m told he’s got a £7 million get-out at Newcastle and he gets half the money over that. They keep denying it, but I think you’ll see in the summer he will leave Newcastle, or he’ll get a monstrous rise to stay there.

“If they get about £4 million, half will go to him, so if they sell him for £7 million, they’ll only net about three because they paid his agent £2 million to get him out of here. Getting £3 million is not bad, but for a player of his quality, it’s not fantastic.”

Knowing that such a little sum can open up talks with the player, Sullivan has lodged a bid of £8m bid in the hope that he can persuade the Senegalese forward to come back to Upton Park. It is thought that Demba Ba’s management team, which is headed by his brother, are interested in what the London club will offer. West Ham will offer near enough anything to bring Ba back and this is what makes Demba Ba’s management team interested.

However, the good news for Newcastle is that despite the bid, and the possible talks Ba is unlikely to want to give up Europa League football. The chances of Ba re-joining West Ham are very low; the player himself has said he is happy at the Toon.

Although he loved life in London he has admitted that the Newcastle faithful have been the best supporters he’s ever played in front of.

The striker said: “The season has been very great for the club and the whole city.”

“For me personally, I had a very good season.

“I scored 16 goals in half a season. It was very good. We play in the Europa League next season, so we’re very happy.

“The Premier League, for me, is probably the best league in the world.

“Nobody expected us to do so good. At the end we were there in fifth place, and it was absolutely amazing.

“I have to say these fans are just amazing.

“The best fans I’ve seen, and the best stadium I’ve played in so far.

Perhaps a more lucrative move to the likes of Arsenal, Man Utd of somewhere abroad mayt urn Demba Ba’s head but for the time being, West Ham is not interesting him.

But, money can anything, can’t it?

David Silva not interested in summer move

Manchester City playmaker David Silva is not interested in a move to Real Madrid, and wants to stay with the newly-crowned Premier League champions according to his agent.

The Spain international has emerged as one of the most gifted and incisive players in the English game, and as such has been linked with a return to his homeland, with Jose Mourinho’s men supposed interested in him.

However, the attacking midfielder’s representative has confirmed that Silva will stay at the Etihad Stadium despite the speculation.

“David has signed a long deal with Manchester City and is very happy at the club,” Julio Llorente is quoted as saying by Mirror Football.

“Football is always unpredictable but he wants to stay in England.

“Real Madrid is a big club as well and they were interested when he was at Valencia but the deal was not possible.

“We are ignoring the plans of Real Madrid because he is very integrated at City and winning the Premier League has only increased his commitment to the club,” he confirmed.

Madrid are also thought to be eager to sign Sergio Aguero from City, but both of Roberto Mancini’s stars seem keen to remain in England.

Neil Warnock set for reunion at Leeds United

Paddy Kenny has joined Neil Warnock’s Leeds United revolution after the goalkeeper signed from Queens Park Rangers for £500,000.

The Republic of Ireland International had fallen down the pecking order at Loftus Road since the arrival of Rob Green and his move to Elland Road means he links up with Warnock for the fourth time in his career.

Kenny has become Warnock’s trusted man between the sticks after spells together with Bury, Sheffield United and QPR so will be hoping their latest reunion is another joyous affair despite his new manager confessing they have not always seen eye to eye.

According to The Sun, the outspoken gaffer believes his new keeper is one of the best in the country, let alone the Championship and since the 34 year old has already gained promotion with Sheffield United and QPR, his knowledge will be a valuable addition to Leeds’ future campaigns after signing a three year deal with the Yorkshire outfit.

Ferguson feels Suarez incident played part in Dalglish sacking

Manchester Untied boss Sir Alex Ferguson has blamed Luis Suarez for getting Kenny Dalglish sacked at Liverpool.

The Uruguay international was involved in a racism scandal with Patrice Evra last term, and consequently received an eight-match ban from the FA.

With the matter handled poorly by the Anfield club, the Scottish coach feels that his countryman’s dismissal at the end of the campaign was largely down to the mismanagement of the Suarez affair.

“If Suarez keeps on making headlines out of it, it’s not going to go away,” Ferguson is quoted by The Telegraph as saying.

“I wasn’t surprised at Kenny leaving. I think that the Suarez incident, [Liverpool owner] John Henry has obviously looked at that and felt it wasn’t handled in the right way.

“It certainly wasn’t a nice thing to happen, you know. I’m not sure, but I think that it must have been part of it. It must have been part of it,” he confessed.

Suarez has recently once more claimed his innocence, which has brought the issue back into the mainstream media again.

Arsenal try to loan Chelsea midfielder

Arsenal have made an attempt to loan Michael Essien from Chelsea for the 2012-13 season, The Daily Mail claim.

The Gunners have parted with Alex Song this summer, who joined Barcelona, and Arsene Wenger is thought to be in the market for a central midfield battler.

With moves for Lucas Biglia and Yann M’Vila running aground, the north London side have looked closer to home for an alternative.

Essien has had injury concerns recently and has not played a lot of football under Roberto Di Matteo, who has the likes of Jon Obi Mikel, Raul Meireles and Frank Lampard to call upon in the centre of the pitch.

Roberto Di Matteo will weigh up Arsenal’s offer on Friday, and it is believed that the Italian coach is considering letting Essien move to the Emirates Stadium in a bid to secure regular first-team football.

The 15 ‘WORST’ players ever to don the England shirt

Roy Hodgson’s England troops begin their World Cup qualifying campaign and the road to Brazil with a tricky looking trip to Chisinau to face Moldova in an important opening fixture. The Three Lions will be looking to get off to a good start after their quarter final exit on penalties to the Italians and they will be hoping to put in a good performance to boot. The critics were divided over Hodgson’s England at Euro 2012, some praised their achievements of reaching the quarter finals despite possessing their weakest squad in years, while others criticised the negative style of play that saw them dominated by other teams.

They will be hoping to put that right against the Moldovans and play like they did in the August friendly victory over their Euro conquerors, Italy. However, Hodgson’s preparations have been disrupted by injuries to key players including Wayne Rooney and Ashley Cole and this will make the task ahead a little tougher. They will still be confident of putting together a good performance and picking up the three points regardless of what team they put out. This time around, there are no surprise call-ups and the squad looks strong on paper which cannot be said for previous efforts. For such a strong footballing nation, England have capped some abysmal players and in recognition of those who should never have pulled on the white shirt, we bring you 15 names that will make you cringe with embarrassment.

Friday Night Football Round Up

Friday night saw two huge games in the Championship take place and two southern rivals were able to progress in the early Championship table.

Brighton and Hove Albion emphatically beat much fancied Sheffield Wednesday by three goals to nil at the Amex Stadium with the Seagulls’ rivals beating their own London counterparts, Charlton, in a scrappy game live on Sky Sports.

Brighton continued their fine early season form and currently top the Championship table after their commanding 3-0 home victory over Sheffield Wednesday that may draw attention to Gus Poyet’s side and their genuine promotion ambitions.

A first half deflected Wayne Bridge free kick and a neat Will Buckley finish sandwiched a fifth goal in three games for Albion hitman Craig Mackail-Smith, for whom Brighton rejected a deadline day bid from Norwich for.

With rivals Brighton topping the table Palace could have done with a victory in their own derby game with Charlton and that is exactly what they got. A dominant Palace side outclassed their south east London rivals with Wilfried Zaha and goalscorer Kagisho Dikgacoi simply having too much ability for their rivals to cope with in a 1-0 away win.

An early second half strike by Dikgacoi was enough to split the teams despite a first half goal being unfairly ruled offside for the hosts.

Parlour believes Arsenal ace needs to concentrate on football

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour believes that winger Theo Walcott needs to focus his mind on football rather than financial matters, according to The Metro.

Walcott has been cagey on whether to sign a new contract for the Gunners worth £75,000 a week. As a consequence, manager Arsene Wenger has been reluctant to play the 23-year-old until he commits himself to the Arsenal cause.

Parlour believes that signing a contract extension would be best for both the player and the club, “Everyone wants to see Theo Walcott sign a new contract at Arsenal.” Parlour added, “He’s got a lot of work to do on the pitch though and, at the moment, he’s not playing. He’s a good player, but he needs to say whether he’s staying or going and then concentrate on his football.”

Parlour, who currently plays for non-league Wembley FC, fears that the contract talks involving Walcott could jeopardise his career, “All these contract talks can affect your game. He’s probably thinking more about money and less about the game.”

Since starting the season opener at home to Sunderland, the England international has been limited to coming on in the second half of Arsenal’s Premier League and Champions League encounters. The former Southampton man, who scored his first goal of the campaign last week, will be hoping to start away at Manchester City on Sunday’s later kick-off.
