New Zealand win rain-hit contest

Dominica’s inaugural Twenty20 international was a damp affair, with an ever-present drizzle dousing the intensity of the contest that New Zealand claimed to ensure at least a share of the spoils in the two-match series. There was only one stoppage, which made it an 18-overs a-side rubber, but persistent showers greased both ball and outfield, nullifying West Indies’ potent spin attack to facilitate a largely clinical chase.West Indies were 22 for 2 in five overs when play was interrupted, and the hosts were unable to achieve the desired acceleration after the resumption and at the end of the innings. Chasing a below-par target, New Zealand suffered no such problems and were always ahead of the game. When the umpires finally decided that rain and poor light had made conditions unfit to continue after 15 overs, New Zealand were 12 runs ahead of the D/L equation. The New Zealand new-ball attack backed Brendon McCullum’s decision to bowl, striking in successive overs to reduce West Indies to 10 for 2 by the third over. Lendl Simmons was lbw to one from Boult that bent in to hit pad before bat, and Dwayne Smith dragged Southee’s short ball from outside off to deep backward square leg. Darren Bravo and Andre Fletcher had just come together when rain forced the players off for 90 minutes.West Indies enjoyed their best period of the game immediately after the resumption, Fletcher lofting Boult over long-on for six in the sixth over. The debutant Ish Sodhi came on in the ninth and Bravo launched his first ball cleanly over the straight boundary. There was more tap for Sodhi, with Fletcher carting him straight for a four and a six and running hard between wickets to take 14 off the 11th over. Fletcher enjoyed some fortune in the next over, when he was caught at cover of a no-ball from Southee, and then he hit Corey Anderson for consecutive sixes, but the slump was around the corner. The home side lost six wickets in the next six overs and scored only 34 off the last five, with the batsmen unable to get the better of clever changes of pace, especially from Southee who bowled several bouncers at varying pace. Bravo top-edged a short ball from Anderson to the keeper to end an 88-run stand for the third wicket, and Sodhi picked up his maiden wicket when Fletcher, on 52, miscued a slog to short third man. Darren Sammy, Andre Russell and Kieron Pollard, all capable of hitting the ball far, could not inflict serious damage at the death and fell in successive overs. The drizzle was a constant presence during the chase, but it never got heavy enough to take the players off. The ball was dry for the first over, and Samuel Badree bowled quick and accurately to concede only two. Jimmy Neesham hinted at the damage he could cause in his new role as opener when he wasted no time in lofting and driving Krishmar Santokie down the ground for six and a four, before inside-edging another forceful shot on to his stumps.Badree had bowled 11 economical balls before sliding one down leg. Kane Williamson paddled it for four and that was the start of a 53-run stand with McCullum that laid the foundation for victory. McCullum played the lead role, attacking Santokie to take 17 off the fifth over. As he blazed shots through cover, midwicket and down the ground to take New Zealand well past the D/L par score, the spectators huddled under tents to get out of the rain.Williamson fell to a sharp caught and bowled by Sammy immediately after chipping a straight boundary, but Ross Taylor picked up where Williamson had left off. He laid into Russell, lofting sixes over long-on and long-off, and pulling for four, ensuring New Zealand did not stumble a wee bit even when McCullum fell with 39 to get off 33 balls. The game ended in miserable conditions and the players will hope that the weather would be more favourable for the decider on Sunday.

Worcestershire stumble after Miles four

Promotion favourites Worcestershire endured one of their worst days of the summer in the Championship when dismissed for 194 by Gloucestershire on a seaming surface at New Road

Promotion favourites Worcestershire endured one of their worst days of the summer in the Championship when dismissed for 194 by Gloucestershire on a seaming surface at New Road. Having come into the match with a game in hand and 43 points ahead of second-placed Surrey, they are already looking at a sizeable deficit after the visitors’ smooth progress to 181 for 2.Gloucestershire briefly wobbled at the start, slipping to 43 for 2 when Will Tavare was caught in the slips off Charlie Morris’ second delivery, but Gareth Roderick seized the initiative, adding a fluent and substantial half-century to five catches behind the wicket. The South African cruised to 88 not out with 15 fours off 107 balls and so far he has put on 138 with Alex Gidman, unbeaten on 57, in cutting the gap to a mere 13 after a day when most things went right for their side.Gloucestershire became the first county to dismiss the Division Two leaders for under 200 in a first innings this season, despite the absence of Will Gidman through injury in advance of confirmation that he will be with Nottinghamshire in 2015.One look at a grassy first-day pitch made it a straightforward decision for Alex Gidman to field first, after taking over the captaincy when Michael Klinger rested a neck injury prior to a make-or-break fixture in the Royal London Cup. With a quarter-final spot secured this week, Gloucestershire are looking to book a home tie by winning their final Group A game against Derbyshire at Derby next Thursday.Another objective is to improve their form in the Championship. Injuries have been a major factor and apart from the absence of the younger Gidman, the attack here is probably as strong it has been following the last-minute registration of New Zealand offspinner Mark Craig. With the ball consistently moving about off the seam, Craig Miles led the assault on Worcestershire with 4 for 54 and the other wickets were equally shared by Liam Norwell and Benny Howell. The batsmen could quickly see trouble ahead, when Daryl Mitchell, the leading batsman in Championship cricket, registered his first duck in a season of 1,222 runs. He was stranded in front when a delivery from Miles kept low and ducked into his pads. Miles also removed Tom Fell with the first of Roderick’s dismissals, but there was hope for Worcestershire as Richard Oliver collected a dozen fours from only 46 balls in maintaining his record of a half-century in each of his four Championship appearances.Howell finally stemmed the flow when Oliver, on 52, was added to Roderick’s haul and Worcestershire quickly slipped to 112 for 5, with Alexei Kervezee lbw to Norwell for 31. The only other higher-order contribution came from Ben Cox with 25 before he, too, was caught behind the wicket. The ninth wicket went down at 149, but infuriatingly for Gloucestershire the last pair put on 46, the biggest stand in the innings. A missed chance in the slips allowed Shaaiq Choudhry to reach 27 not out and the No. 11 Morris made his highest Championship score before falling for 24, another victim for the Roderick-Norwell combination.Matt Mason, Worcestershire’s assistant coach, said: “It was probably our most disappointing day of the season so far. We were put in and it was tough to bat early on. Richard Oliver acquitted himself well but everyone else struggled. With the ball, we were disappointing as well, if for once I can criticise the bowlers.”

Hughes 'a 100-Test player' – Clarke

Phillip Hughes is used to getting bad news from Australia’s selectors, having been dropped from the Test team three times, but captain Michael Clarke believes Hughes will become a permanent fixture in Australia’s side over the next decade

Phillip Hughes is used to getting bad news from Australia’s selectors, having been dropped from the Test team three times, but captain Michael Clarke believes he will become a permanent fixture in Australia’s side over the next decade. In his latest setback, Hughes was this month left out of the one-day squad to tour Zimbabwe, despite less than a week earlier becoming the first Australian to score a List A double-century. Instead of preparing for ODI duties, Hughes has stayed with Australia A, for whom he scored the 202 not out in Darwin, and will captain the side in a four-day game against South Africa A in Townsville this week.Hughes had appeared the logical candidate to be included in the one-day squad, given that David Warner will miss the Zimbabwe tour to prepare for the birth of his first child. But while Hughes said he was “really disappointed” at being overlooked in the short term, Clarke believes his long-term future should include a lengthy tenure in the national side.”I think Hughesy is a really good example of someone who continues to score big runs,” Clarke told ABC Radio this week. “Look at his first-class record, he’s probably got more hundreds than any other player at his age. He’s making runs consistently for Australia A, so I think he’s doing everything he can to be in the front of the selectors’ minds.”His performances speak for themselves. He’s got a bright future. He’s a 100-Test player in my opinion. He’s just got to get an opportunity now and I’m sure he’ll grab it with both hands. But I think in 10 years from now, we’ll be talking about Phillip Hughes as one of those players to play 100 Test matches for Australia. He’s got the talent, he’s got the work ethic.”I guess what I love most about Hughesy is his passion and want to play for Australia. You ask him to do something, he’ll do it if it helps him get in this Australian team. He’s a good guy to have around the group. I’ve always liked him, I’ve got a lot of respect for him and I know he’ll play a lot of cricket for Australia.”But Hughes, 25, has perhaps played less cricket for his country than might have been expected after he scored twin centuries in his second Test in Durban at the age of 20. He has made 26 Test appearances but has added only one more century, and was surprisingly overlooked as a one-day player until early last year, when he emerged with two hundreds in his first ODI series.Over the past five years, Hughes has struggled to find a permanent place in Australia’s Test side. He was axed during the 2009 Ashes tour of England, again after becoming Chris Martin’s bunny in the 2011-12 home series against New Zealand, and once more during the 2013 Ashes tour when Warner returned to the side for the third Test.Although Hughes was back in the squad for this year’s tour of South Africa, he did not play a Test, and it remains to be seen whether he will be part of the group to play Pakistan in the UAE in October. Ahead of the South Africa A match starting in Townsville on Thursday, Hughes told reporters that new chairman of selectors Rod Marsh had been supportive but had challenged him to keep piling up the runs.”I was really disappointed to not get selected for that [Zimbabwe tour], but that’s how it is,” Hughes said. “All I can do is continue to play some consistent cricket. I’m happy with my game at the moment. I’ve had a good chat with Rod Marsh and he’s been really good.”That chat stays between me and Rod, but it’s about scoring a lot more runs and everything takes care of itself. I spoke to Rod a number of times in the last week and he’s been very supportive. They only took 14 to Zimbabwe, so it’s not many in the squad. There wasn’t really room for me, and that’s what he said. It’s about going on and scoring a lot more runs and continuing to be consistent.”Despite his outstanding one-day record – he has scored 3473 List A runs at 48.23 – Hughes will find it hard to break into Australia’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, with Warner to return to the group. For the time being, his focus is on adding to his 25 first-class centuries over the next few days in Townsville.

Bell-Drummond, Northeast tons defy Hampshire

Daniel Bell-Drummond and Sam Northeast, with his third consecutive century, continued to repay Kent’s faith by putting their side into a very strong position

At a time when the relevance of some smaller counties is being considered, what a delight it was to see two young, homegrown English batsman doing most of the batting on day one for Kent. The county have afforded their academy products opportunities and here Daniel Bell-Drummond and Sam Northeast, with his third consecutive century, continued to repay that faith by putting their side into a very strong position.Bell-Drummond, 21, and Northeast, three years older, were identified as prodigies at a young age and both served England Under-19s impressively (the 2012 World Cup aside, in Bell-Drummond’s case). Kent are yet to see the best of them but they are among several young players, brought forward by the club out of financial necessity, who are showing the value of investment in an academy system. Yorkshire have proved what is possible. This is Bell-Drummond’s year. His century on day one, his highest first-class score, brought him within touching distance of reaching 1000 runs in a season for the first time. It was his second ton of the summer, after his first in the Championship against Derbyshire in June. That effort, which contained only 11 boundaries, was similar to this in requiring careful play on a pitch lacking pace – it is in the centre of the square close to the international pitches, showing similar characteristics to the Test match surface. Kent will hope another academy product, offspinner Adam Riley, will enjoy conditions later in the match.Bell-Drummond struck 16 fours in this century, reached from 227 balls. One was his only moment of real initiative against the spinners, after tea, when he skipped down to lift Liam Dawson over mid-on. He did it again to move into the 90s. Another boundary from a spinner – this time an Imran Tahir full toss whacked through midwicket – took him to 99. There he spent an awkward 12 deliveries, including a quicker one from Tahir that nearly sneaked past a nervous forward defense, before gaining his satisfaction.Kent’s youth policy has resulted in only one serious challenge for promotion since being relegated in 2010. But it was during healthier times that Northeast was first selected, in 2007. He has yet to fully realise the potential that saw Kent send a coach to Harrow to save him travelling to Canterbury himself. His 880 runs at 55.00 in 2012 has not been built on and this season could be another without reaching 1000 runs. But the Royal London Cup revived his season and he is enjoying his new role at No.5. Following 406 runs at 45.11 in 50-over cricket were successive Championship centuries against Glamorgan and then Essex.Like Bell-Drummond’s, his innings was one of circumspection; the run-rate for much of the day stayed below three an over, with the wicket becoming slower throughout the day. Northeast’s best stroke came after he went past fifty in 121 balls: a thumping straight drive off Chris Wood. He was more aggressive against the spinners than his partner. A slog sweep for six off Dawson forced the bowler to rethink his line of attack to a more defensive 4-5 leg-side split. Northeast cared little for the extra protection and stepped out of his ground again to flick between short midwicket and mid-on. He became more fluent as the day progressed. The pair shared a double-century stand and comfortably played their way through the second new ball as Hampshire went two sessions without taking a wicket. Their attack missed Kyle Abbott, away with South African franchise Dolphins at the Champions League T20, who has taken 36 wickets at 20.33 this season. Abbott has played a major part in setting up Hampshire’s promotion run but they will have to finish the job without him.In place of Abbott, they have parachuted in Tahir, the South Africa legspinner, for the final two matches but here he proved the most expensive of the main attack and picked up a warning for running on the pitch. His most threatening spell came after Bell-Drummond had reached his century, finding a thin edge that flashed past slip’s left hand. In the same over another edge, this from Northeast, evaded slip to his right. Trapping Brendan Nash lbw to bring about an early lunch was his only success. This time last year, Matt Coles was on loan at Hampshire having decided to leave his home county, Kent. Here, he justified his new role with the new ball for Hampshire with two wickets in his opening spell. Both victims have endured poor Championship seasons. Rob Key and Ben Harmison have just five scores over fifty between them in 50 innings. Key was cleaned up by Coles’ second ball of the match and four overs later Harmison gave a catch to Dawson at second slip. But Kent went on to dominate the day. It could prove a poor toss for Hampshire to have lost.
