Record opening stand stuns Pakistan

An unbeaten 273-run opening stand between Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes almost wiped off the entire Pakistan lead of 296 in just over two sessions

The Report by Devashish Fuloria01-May-2015
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThe prospect of surviving five sessions under a heavy deficit against a potent bowling attack would have forced most sides into a shell. Ten years ago in Dhaka, Bangladesh had batted out 142 overs against Zimbabwe to force a draw and win their first Test series. Nafees Iqbal had knuckled down to score 121 in almost six hours in that match.Faced with a daunting deficit of 296, Nafees’ brother Tamim Iqbal, however, chose an alternative approach. He kept all diffidence aside in a blistering century – his third in three Tests, his seventh overall and his first against Pakistan – that helped Bangladesh slice off almost all of Pakistan’s daunting lead in just over two sessions. Along with Imrul Kayes, who was close on Tamim’s heels with his third Test century, he added 273 runs in 61 overs during an unbeaten stand that not only beat the record of Bangladesh’s best opening set by the same pair in the the team’s previous Test, it also was their best stand for any wicket. If there was any help for the bowlers from the pitch, it remained buried deep under the solidity of the two batsmen. The ball reversed, but often found the middle of the bat; it turned, too, but was regularly carted away over the boundary ropes. Only twice, Pakistan came close to breaking the stand as Tamim was hit on the pads, but in both instances, the decision stayed with the umpire after Pakistan asked for a review. It was a riposte Pakistan would have least expected after their continued dominance on the fourth morning. Even though left-arm spinner Taijul Islam ended with figures of 6 for 163 – his third five-for in sixth Test – as Pakistan lost their last five wickets for 34 runs, the damage had seemingly been done. Leading by 205 runs at the start of the fourth day, Sarfraz Ahmed and Asad Shafiq had extended the dominance with a 126-run stand for the sixth wicket. Both batsmen missed out on centuries but Pakistan’s total propped up to 628, their best against Bangladesh. The four overs Bangladesh had to play before lunch hid completely the approach they were going to take in the innings. Only six runs were scored after Tamim had narrowly survived an appeal for lbw off the first delivery from Junaid Khan. In the first over after lunch, though, Tamim carved the same bowler stylishly with a back-foot punch through backward point. In the next over from Wahab Riaz, Tamim picked up two consecutive boundaries with the pull shot.If one thought it was a brief tactic to score quickly off the faster bowlers on a pitch that was still good for batting, before the arrival of spin, Tamim was to prove it wrong. He came out of the crease on the second ball bowled by Zulfiqar Babar but was lucky to mistime the lofted shot as it landed only couple of meters short of the fielder at deep midwicket. Had he holed out, his method would have surely been termed reckless.A classic cover drive off Yasir Shah in the next over brought the 50 for Bangladesh, in 12.5 overs. The next 50 was even quicker; it came in 9.1 overs as Kayes joined in as well. Pakistan’s spinners were constantly made to adjust their lengths as both batsmen jumped out of the crease without warning.A reverse-swept boundary off Zulfiqar brought up Tamim’s first fifty against Pakistan. The next ball disappeared over long-on. When brought on, Hafeez was served the same treatment, with Tamim smashing him down the ground for his second six in the bowler’s second over and Kayes picking up a six and a four in his third to bring up Bangladesh’s 100 in the 22nd over. When Tamim slowed down, Kayes picked up, reaching his half-century off 80 balls. The pair tightened up in the third session, keeping the reverse-swing out, before a brace of boundaries off Junaid took Tamim to his fourth second-innings century off 123 balls. The innings put him ahead of Mohammad Ashraful on the list of Bangladesh batsmen with most centuries.Kayes was equally impressive and adventurous. He had been squatting behind the stumps as a substitute wicketkeeper for more than 100 overs over the last couple of days after Mushfiqur had injured his right hand. Eight overs into the day, Kayes, in an act of self-preservation, passed on the gloves to Mahmudullah. That came in handy as he survived a bout of cramps to reach the century-mark off 153 balls with the help of 11 fours and three sixes. By the end of the day, he had caught up with Tamim. It was a highly unlikely turn of events. But it was such a day. Earlier, Mahmudullah, who was keeping wickets for the first time in international cricket, was reminded of the job responsibilities by Sarfraz. The batsman blocked in front of the pitch and directed Mahmudullah to pick up the ball, but then went on himself to lob it towards the bowler. If Pakistan were expecting similar generosity from Bangladesh’s batsmen, it never came.

Shaun Marsh makes his pitch for Test retention

Shaun Marsh began his Ashes tour with a century against Kent to stake a claim for retaining his spot in the Test side but there were also runs for Chris Rogers

Daniel Brettig in Canterbury25-Jun-2015

Shaun Marsh makes Test case with hundred

Late in a balmy day at Canterbury, one exuberant but unmistakably composed spectator ventured onto the field carrying a tent. He proceeded to set it up on the outfield and get into it, before stripping down to his underwear and emerging to cheers from a gathering in the region of 5,000 spectators. To make the XI for the first Investec Test in Cardiff, Shaun Marsh needed to make himself similarly conspicuous. Against an agreeable Kent, he glided to a hundred surely enough, but his final tally was only 30 runs more than Chris Rogers himself, as the two apparent rivals put on an assured 181 for the first wicket. In their tour opener, Australia’s batsmen were barely tested by the team presently propping up the bottom of the Division Two table in the County Championship, and the conditions themselves were as pleasant for batting as anything one could find in the British Isles. Time in the middle was welcome nonetheless, something Steven Smith and Michael Clarke were also able to enjoy in a smooth stand before the close arrived at 348 for 3.Kent’s captain Sam Northeast won the toss, and it was in keeping with the way many a tour match is played that he proceeded to offer the Australians first use of the pitch. For any other match Northeast would surely have batted, but the prospect of two full innings by the tourists offered welcome time in the middle for Clarke’s men while also ensuring healthy gate takings and a fourth day finish for the hosts. A slightly unholy bargain, if a traditional one. Most interest at the ground centred on how Marsh and Rogers would fare. On the face of it, Rogers should be expected to slip straight back into the team after missing out on the two West Indies Tests due to concussion. However there are several factors the selectors may be moved to consider on the contrary.First of all, Rogers is 37 and not planning to play on after this series. Secondly Marsh is a younger man with an attitude and technique that may finally be maturing after a very long period of cricketing adolescence. Thirdly, the possibility of a dry summer and pitches similarly easy-paced to this one would alleviate some of the doubts harboured about Marsh’s ability to combat a swinging, seaming ball. All this was into the bargain as Marsh and Rogers set out together, ball seldom beating the bat and regularly skating to the ropes. Ivan Thomas and Mitchell Claydon were rarely threatening, though the latter did tease out the only chance of the morning, a Rogers edge turfed by Adam Riley at second slip when the opener had 19.That brief upset did not faze Rogers, who had entered the match still smarting from the banning of his planned hospitality packages for the Lord’s Test. On match eve Rogers had commented he was “pretty good at getting on with it”, and he proved that again here, helping Marsh past a hundred stand, past lunch and ultimately to the middle of the day before he was pinned lbw by Matt Hunn, having stayed on the crease to a ball of fullish length.Rogers’ exit signalled a change in what had previously been a fairly sedate tempo, as Smith set off as though intent upon answering the various charges against his technique and ability that have emanated from Graeme Swann, among others. Marsh was happily taken up in Smith’s slipstream, and soon saluted first-class hundred No. 15, also his second since arriving in the Caribbean last month.Tea came and went, and then so did Marsh, offering the kind of slog at Hunn that suggested he had been asked to move things along. Smith was completely assured, nurdling singles to long leg when he wasn’t cuffing respectable deliveries to the boundary, and overall giving the impression that he was better than this sort of bowling company.Clarke was a little jerkier, a little less certain, but he found his timing and power after a few overs in the middle, and moved with growing confidence to 56 whereupon he tickled Hunn down the legside and into the gloves of Sam Billings. It will be a source of some concern for Clarke that he has barely played a single innings of more than 90 minutes’ duration since his return from hamstring surgery during the World Cup, even if passing 50 has not been a problem for him.Enough time remained for Shane Watson to find the boundary before stumps arrived, and he will hope for more on day two – his duel with the younger Mitchell Marsh for the allrounder’s berth is even tighter than that between Rogers and Shaun.

Dravid mentor, Upton head coach at Daredevils

Rahul Dravid will be team mentor and Paddy Upton head coach in a re-jigged coaching team for Delhi Daredevils

‘Great to be part of a young, exciting team’ – Dravid

Former India captain Rahul Dravid has been appointed team mentor of Delhi Daredevils. Dravid will head a refurbished coaching bench at Daredevils, who have also hired former South Africa and India assistant coach Paddy Upton as head coach.Dravid and Upton will work with a team of assistants: Zubin Bharucha (technical director), former India batsmen Sridharan Sriram and Praveen Amre (batting coaches), and former Tamil Nadu and India fast bowler TA Sekhar (bowling consultant).”I am very excited by the challenge of taking Delhi Daredevils on to the next level. From what I have seen I have been impressed by the ambition and energy demonstrated by the team and I look forward to working with a group of players that I believe have what it takes to succeed,” Dravid said.”Along with the rest of the support staff, I am fully aware of what this franchise means to its supporters and I intend to do everything possible to help build a team that the fans can be proud of.”The franchise was forced to ring in changes to the coaching staff once former South Africa batsman and coach Gary Kirsten’s three-year contract was terminated after two seasons. Under Kirsten, who took charge in September 2013, Daredevils finished bottom of the table in IPL 2014 and second from the bottom last year. Daredevils also axed Kirsten’s assistant Rob Walters, who was the trainer.Incidentally, the trio of Dravid, Upton and Bharucha were part of the core team at Rajasthan Royals, which has been suspended for two seasons by the Lodha Committee. In 2014, having served as captain in previous seasons, Dravid assumed the role of team director cum mentor at Royals. In the 28 matches Dravid oversaw, the franchise won 13 matches and lost 12, with two ties and one no result. One of the most sought after coaches in the T20 format, Upton recently won the Big Bash League with Sydney Thunder, before also coaching Lahore Qalandars in the inaugural Pakistan Super League.”I relish the privilege to work again with Rahul and Zubin, and to have the opportunity to do so at a franchise like Delhi Daredevils,” Upton said. “I am constantly learning about the Twenty20 format as I move around the world, and look forward to applying and furthering this knowledge at the coming IPL season with Delhi.”

Delhi in danger of losing World T20 semi-final

Strong concerns have resurfaced about Delhi hosting the first semi-final of the World Twenty20, scheduled for March 30

Nagraj Gollapudi20-Mar-2016

It is understood that the BCCI is concerned that nearly 1800 seats in the RP Mehra Block at the Feroz Shah Kotla will be empty•AFP

Strong concerns have resurfaced about Delhi hosting the first semi-final of the World Twenty20, scheduled for March 30.It is understood that both the ICC and BCCI are worried that the DDCA is being forced to not allow ticket sales to the RP Mehra Block, which was the old club house at the Feroz Shah Kotla, meaning nearly 1800 seats will be empty. There is also the concern that no hoardings are allowed to be displayed in front of the stands. Those restrictions were put in place by the DelhI High Court recently while issuing clearances for the DDCA to host World T20 matches.A final decision is likely to be reached in the next day or two, with the ICC and BCCI also discussing alternate venues to host the game.An official involved in the organisation of the World T20 admitted that there had been “ongoing discussions” over shifting the Delhi semi-final to another venue. The biggest worry, as far as the ICC is concerned, is the prospect of playing the Delhi matches in front of an empty stand.”Because of the order of the court no ticket can be sold. It is embarrassing to have an empty stadium particularly when you are hosting a global tournament and all the world is watching you,” the official said.Another stumbling block for the BCCI and ICC is the fate of the other games in Delhi, should the semi-final be shifted.”Should the matches on 26th (England v Sri Lanka) and 28th (South Africa v Sri Lanka) be moved also? What happens if one of the teams playing in Delhi on March 28 qualifies for the semis?” the official asked.Even if the semi-final is moved after numerous logistical obstacles, it is likely that if a team is already playing in Delhi, they would be against travelling to another venue just a day before such a big game. The ICC is also not helped by the fact that it has not yet gotten the clearance to erect hoardings in front of the Mehra Block. Justice Mukul Mudgal, who was appointed as the DDCA’s man in charge for the World T20, has reportedly refused to allow the ICC to erect any hoardings inside the stadium after the Archaeological Survey of India called one of the buildings housed in the block as illegal. However, a senior DDCA official indicated that Mudgal had not given any directive. According to the official, what made matters worse was the court did not make it clear whether any permission was needed from the south Delhi municipal corporation in order to make the Mehra Block freed for the public. On Friday, as a last resort, the DDCA approached the Supreme Court to intervene. Chief Justice TS Thakur, who is also hearing the Lodha Committee hearing, deferred the Delhi hearing to March 28. “Their question of shifting the matches is being debated at this stage,” the DDCA official said.Even before the tournament began, there had been doubts for months over Delhi’s ability to host matches in the World T20. Eventually, after extending multiple deadlines to get the requisite clearances from both the Delhi government as well as the civic agencies, the BCCI gave DDCA the nod. In the past few years, these agencies had pulled the DDCA into the courts, which granted ad-hoc clearances.Such a scenario has hurt the ICC and BCCI dearly, as they were unable to announce the final tournament schedule well in advance as is the norm. It also did not help global fans as the BCCI delayed the ticketing process till the eve of the tournament.
