Willian Jose would have been a wonderful signing for Newcastle

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Brazilian forward Willian Jose has claimed that he turned down the chance to join Newcastle United from Real Sociedad in 2018.

And the Magpies have been made to regret missing out on the Sociedad ace with Joelinton struggling to make his mark since arriving from Hoffenheim.

What’s the word, then?

Speaking to Marca, Willian Jose revealed that he had the opportunity to join Newcastle last summer but ultimately remained with Sociedad.

The 27-year-old had spells with Real Madrid and Real Zaragoza before joining Las Palmas, where he managed 10 goals in 34 outings during the 2015-16 campaign.

Sociedad signed the forward in the summer of 2016, and he has been in fine form the Basque club – netting 49 times in 117 appearances in all competitions.

This season, Willian Jose has four goals in nine La Liga outings, whilst his overall record in La Liga is 51 strikes in 133 appearances, which is some going when considering that he has not been turning out for the likes of Barcelona.

Newcastle had been in the market for a striker for some time before ultimately deciding to sign Joelinton during the summer, and the South American’s struggles suggest that Willian Jose would have been a much better option for the club.

Can Joelinton turn his form around?

It was always going to be difficult for the summer arrival to hit the ground running as Newcastle are not exactly a team that create bundles of opportunities.

The striker has netted just once in nine Premier League appearances this season, whilst his record of 15 goals in 60 Bundesliga matches is not exactly prolific.

It remains to be seen whether Joelinton can score the goals to keep Newcastle in the Premier League.

We mastered the trick in the video below in 8 attempts… could you do better?

It is difficult to say with any certainty that Willian Jose would have been a success in England’s top flight as he is unproven in the Premier League.

The Brazilian’s goal record in recent years is very, very impressive, though, and Newcastle missed a real trick when they failed to bring him to St James’ Park.

Liverpool fans reject Garth Crooks’ suggestion that Sadio Mane is carrying the team

Liverpool are in great form with a number of players playing well, but despite that Garth Crooks believes that Sadio Mane is carrying the side, an argument several fans have rejected.

The BBC pundit praised the Senegal international for his contribution against Tottenham on Sunday, stating that he caused problems for the visitors and has now taken over the mantle from Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk as the Reds’ most important player.

For some supporters it is a rather bewildering assertion, as they believe each one of their players is making a valuable contribution, with the fact they have won nine out of ten league games evidence of that.

In addition, they have seven players nominated for the Ballon d’Or this year, including Mane, whilst Salah has scored only one less than his attacking teammate, so it is understandable that fans oppose Crooks’ claim.

Many of the Anfield faithful want the whole team to receive the recognition they believe is deserved, with some claiming Mane is only so effective because of his teammates, as the following reactions show.

Crystal Palace fans react as Chelsea eye up Wilfried Zaha as part of £150m dash

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was reported that Chelsea are eyeing up a move for Wilfried Zaha.

The Blues are currently under a transfer ban, although the Court of Arbitration for Sport will hear their appeal on November 20th – if they get the ban overturned, Frank Lampard could have a transfer kitty as large as £150m.

The west Londoners will also target Leicester full-back Ben Chilwell and RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner as part of the big-money dash, but the Eagles will presumably not want to lose their talisman midway through the season.

Zaha is yet to score this term and has just one assist to his name in 11 Premier League appearances, although after notching ten goals and ten assists in the previous campaign, he is still without a doubt Palace’s main danger man.

That is perhaps why Everton offered as much as £70m + two players for the Ivorian back in the summer window, but the south Londoners managed to resist advances for their asset – it now looks as if the transfer saga is set to have another chapter written in January.

Let’s see how some Palace fans on Twitter reacted to the story..

Man Utd facing prospect of Paul Pogba deja vu if Tahith Chong joins Juventus

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

It could be time to start rubbing your eyes again if you’re a Manchester United fan. A highly-promising prospect, with very little game-time in the first-team, could be set to join Juventus on a free transfer. Sound familiar? Well, that was pretty much the story of Paul Pogba’s initial departure from Old Trafford, and now it could be a case of deja vu with Tahith Chong.

According to The Daily Mail, the Italian giants have been keeping a close eye on the 19-year-old in view of a potential move. The report claims the Bianconeri had representatives in attendance when Chong scored for United’s U23s in a 3-1 victory over Stoke last month, and that with his contract running out at the end of the current season, are considering swooping for him on a free.

The Dutchman has barely featured for the Red Devils’ first-team this season, making just two appearances in the Premier League, with his game-time in the competition totalling a measly 24 minutes. This despite him being given his senior debut by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in one of the Norwegian’s first games in charge of the club in January. Since then, things have not looked promising at all in terms of making a breakthrough.

Having seen Pogba go on to dominate in Italy with 34 goals and 42 assists in 178 games, surely you would think United would have learned their lessons by now? Indeed, re-signing the France World Cup winner for a then world-record transfer fee of £89m seemed to be an acknowledgement that they had made a mistake in letting him go too soon. So how has this exact situation come to transpire again?

Chong has been tipped to enjoy a bright future in the game by a host of coaches and managers, with Jose Mourinho even remarking “when he makes the ball move and attacks people one against one, he has quality”. That kind of edge-of-your-seat style of play is exactly what fans love to see. And instead, it appears the Red Devils are going to let another starlet slip through the net in frustrating fashion.

West Brom fans hail Sam Johnstone after clean sheet at Stoke

West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone made it back-to-back away clean sheets in the Championship when he kept out Stoke City during Monday’s affair.

The shutout against Stoke proved to be just the third time at the former Manchester United stopper had kept a clean sheet in 15 Championship matches this season.

On the face of it, West Brom’s defensive numbers this term are not exactly terrific.

Indeed, the Baggies might be top of the Championship table, but Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest, Brentford, Swansea City and Preston North End have all conceded fewer league goals this season.

Keeping out Stoke would have certainly boosted Johnstone’s confidence, though.

And some West Brom fans have taken to social media to praise the 26-year-old, who turned out on loan for Aston Villa before completing a permanent move to the Hawthorns in July 2018.

Wolves have been handed a long-term boost after latest Chem Campbell reports

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Football Insider, Wolverhampton Wanderers are in advanced talks over a new contract with their wonderkid Chem Campbell.

It’s a decision that has the potential to not only boost the club’s long-term future but also it matches one of the key ambitions set out by owners Fosun.

What’s the word?

The reports claim that the Molineux decision-makers are attempting to tie down the promising attacking midfielder when he turns 17 in December.

This comes as potentially fantastic news for those up in the west Midlands as a whole host of Bundesliga clubs were reportedly chasing him in the hope they could clinch the next Jadon Sancho or Ademola Lookman.

Borussia Dortmund themselves, Schalke, and RB Leipzig were three teams touted for interest.

Campbell made his first-team debut last month as Wolves were defeated by local rivals Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup.

He became the second youngest player to put on the old gold shirt, eclipsing both Morgan Gibbs-White and Robbie Keane.

Fosun’s delight

First and foremost, the decision goes to great lengths in proving that Fosun’s goal to build the club from within is more than mere hearsay to appease supporters.

The club’s owners have invested money in the academy set up in recent times in the hope that more players can follow Gibbs-White into Nuno Santo’s first-team fold.

Campbell is one of the most promising talents at Wolves, and he has been described as a player with ‘great potential’ that can ‘beat players and score goals.’

His recent maiden bow for the senior side will serve as a significant source of confidence going forward as he’s clearly well thought of by the Portuguese chief, especially as he has also been part of their Europa League squad this campaign.

Wolves, Fosun, and Nuno could have quite a midfielder on their hands, one that will assist the club in meeting all of its long-term ambitions.

Inter Milan fans should keep their eyes peeled for Spurs’ Eriksen in tonight’s clash

This article is part of Football FanCast’s One to Watch series, which focuses on those players we think are particularly worth keeping an eagle-eye on as the 2019/20 season unfolds.

Denmark are gearing up for their clash against Gibraltar later on tonight and as always, Christian Eriksen is more than likely to grace the pitches for his national team as one of their leaders having been called up once again.

Interestingly enough, the great Dane, for all his obvious qualities, is somewhat struggling in the Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur.

He is not really getting picked as often as he used to be by Mauricio Pochettino and that has definitely taken a toll on his general output and, quite possibly, on Spurs’ performance in the domestic competition in 2019/20.

So far, Eriksen has tallied 14 appearances for his team across all competitions but that equates to only 861 minutes, two goals and one assist.

When we compare that to his last season’s tally of ten goals and 17 assists, it puts thing more into perspective, especially considering he was in the starting line-up 30 out of 36 times in the Premier League. Now, after only 11 games, he’s already been benched four times and didn’t come off the bench at all against Sheffield United last time out.

But according to a recent report coming from Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter Milan are keeping tabs on the Danish playmaker and would be willing to incorporate him come June next year.

Of course, the same report emphasises the Nerazzurri know it will be a tall task but if the opportunity arises, they will definitely try and pounce on it with both hands.

For that reason, their fans might want to keep their eyes peeled for the 27-year-old tonight and see for themselves whether he can prove his worth and warrant the links with their club.

Of course, his out-of-favour status with Pochettino and the fact that his contract expires in the summer of 2020 mean Inter could get a discount for Eriksen, or even get him for free, but Antonio Conte first has to deem him worthy of a transfer in the first place.

Even though he’s not firing on all cylinders for Spurs, he usually performs rather well for Denmark, already bagging 29 goals in 93 appearances for his country.

Maybe the Premier League stage is not really a clear depiction of his quality at the moment but the international one just might be.

Better keep those eyes peeled, then.

Spurs fans mock Roberto after West Ham horror show

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans mocked West Ham United goalkeeper Roberto as they won their first away game since January on Saturday.

Spurs won 3-2 at the London Stadium in Jose Mourinho’s first game as manager, with Son Heung-Min, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane all on the scoresheet.

Goals from Michail Antonio and Angelo Ogbonna gave Hammers fans hope that a comeback could be on but, ultimately, Spurs took all three points.

And a number of fans took to Twitter to troll Roberto throughout the game, as he endured a day to forget.

The Spanish goalkeeper was arguably at fault for Son’s first goal, which may have zipped past him but appeared relatively stoppable, while he also appeared to dive past Kane’s header for the third goal.

And fans took great joy in seeing the stopper struggle for the seventh consecutive top-flight game; he is yet to be on the winning side in the league for the Irons.

Leeds may be about to sell Lewie Coyle, but is that the right choice?

Football Insider have been reporting that Leeds United will sell Lewie Coyle in January.

His apparent destination isn’t a surprising one as the right-back is reportedly set to join Fleetwood after spending the last two seasons on loan with the north-west outfit.

Coyle is currently in his third term with Joey Barton’s side, and he’s seemingly in the form of his life.

The right-back has crafted four assists in 15 appearances this season, and when you consider that he’s a defender that is a truly incredible figure.

So why are Leeds looking to get rid of him?

He’s 24 and hasn’t had a look in at the club for a number of years now, but surely this form he’s showing at Fleetwood warrants him being given a chance?

We asked our team of writers to give their verdicts on whether or not Leeds would be right to move Coyle on permanently.

Lewis Blain

“There can be no harm in Marcelo Bielsa giving Lewie Coyle a go in the first-team. If anything, his recent spells out on loan have proven he has done the job asked of him and therefore, he should be given the opportunity.

“Both Luke Ayling and Stuart Dallas have impressed when playing in a similar role as the 24-year-old. Ayling played as many as 40 times last term, registering six assists while Dallas has made 1.9 tackles predominantly from that third of the pitch in 2019/20. However, the message here is far greater.

“What must the other players out on loan or the promising talents coming through the ranks think – no matter what they do, it’s unlikely to see them ever cement their names amongst Elland Road folklore?

“Coyle has four years on both players too, which can only stand him in good stead. Leeds would be wrong to sell as there are much wider elements to consider. He’s unlikely to garner a sufficient enough fee to make Leeds stand back and snatch it.”

Kealan Hughes

“Lewie Coyle may be performing well on loan but he falls some way short in meeting the required standard that Leeds need in their promotion push, and will certainly be surplus to requirements if the club is indeed promoted.
“Despite playing in League One he has still only achieved an average of 0.7 interceptions per game, below that of Stuart Dallas’ 1.1 and Ezgjan Alioski’s one per game, which suggests he is not the type of full-back who would fit into a Marcelo Bielsa team.
“They are better off cashing in now and using the funds to strengthen in January on areas which are in need of reinforcement, especially as he has only made 23 first-team appearances in the last four years.”

Vijievan Jeevathayalan

“With his impressive start to the season, Leeds must strike while the iron is hot when it comes to a decision on Lewie Coyle. The right-back has been a consistent performer whilst on loan at Fleetwood Town, and as per Whoscored, his average match rating of 6.92 is the fourth-highest in the entire squad.

“But with Marcelo Bielsa’s side already containing the likes of Luke Ayling and Stuart Dallas as options at right-back, it is difficult to see how Coyle could truly make a statement in the Whites’ first-team.

“They would simply be better off cashing in on the 24-year-old, and boosting the transfer coffers. While that may be harsh on the defender himself, Leeds must be ruthless and put the team’s needs first.”

Charles Jones

“I think Leeds would be making a huge mistake by letting Lewie Coyle go at this juncture of his career.

“His loan spells away from Elland Road should have been working towards his eventual introduction to the first team if he proved himself worthy, and he certainly has proven himself to be good enough.”

“What more could he do to prove his quality? He’s won two Player of the Year awards during his time away from Elland Road so why would they now choose to cut ties with him?. This could be a decision the Whites live to regret in the future.”

Leeds fans bash Luke Ayling after Reading showing

Leeds United fans on Twitter have been continued to bash Luke Ayling after his performance against Reading on Tuesday evening. The defender received a huge amount of criticism for his display last weekend and there’s been no let up from certain supporters in midweek either. It has to be said that the right-back had a below-par performance against the Royals as he made twice as many fouls as he did tackles and he picked up a yellow card for his troubles. The 28-year-old once again operated as a centre-back in Marcelo Bielsa’s three at the back system, but unfortunately, he didn’t look too comfortable there in midweek.[ad_pod ]Fortunately, the Whites managed to keep a clean sheet at the Madejski Stadium on their way to a 1-0 win, but that wasn’t enough to keep Ayling out of the firing line on social media.Fans really weren’t happy with how the former Bristol City man performed as they lambasted him for his showing against the Berkshire outfit. Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying about Ayling on social media…

In other news, Leeds fans were left frustrated by another player after their game against Reading.
