Jac Caglianone Got the Classic Rookie Treatment After First Home Run in the Majors

There has been plenty to be excited about for Kansas City Royals fans since the team called up top prospect Jac Caglianone.

Ideally, Caglianone’s promotion to the majors represents a new chapter for the Royals—one that includes plenty of home runs from the lefty slugger.

On Thursday, Caglianone accomplished another career first, belting his first home run as a player in the big leagues.

As is tradition, Caglianone was hit with the silent treatment when he arrived in the dugout from his inaugural trip around the bases. But when the levee broke and the celebration began, it was a big one.

Caglianone didn’t have to wait very long to receive a more standard home run celebration with his teammates, as he hit his second dinger of the game, and of his career, just a few innings later.

Caglianone’s second home run would put the score at 4-1 over the Texas Rangers, where the Royals would keep it and secure the final outs. It was Kansas City’s third straight win.

Better than Maeda: Celtic star is going to be undroppable under Nancy

Martin O’Neill signed off his second spell with Celtic in style with a 1-0 win over Dundee at Parkhead in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday night.

The experienced interim won seven of his eight matches in charge of the club after Brendan Rodgers resigned at the end of October, and Wilfried Nancy will take on the role from Thursday.

Daizen Maeda scored the only goal of the game for O’Neill’s side as he bravely competed to head into the back of the net after Hyun-jun Yang’s effort was saved, which led to him wearing a bandage for the remainder of the night.

Ranking Celtic's best performers against Dundee

The Japan international was, of course, one of the top performers on the night for the Hoops because it was his goal that ultimately sealed all three points to send Celtic level on points with Hearts at the top of the table.

He was not the top performer on the night for the Scottish giants, though, as a couple of other players were ahead of him in that respect, because the striker also missed a ‘big chance’ and lost five of his six duels, per Sofascore.

Reo Hatate was one of those two players. The Japanese whiz created two ‘big chances’, including Yang’s initial shot before the goal, and won four of his seven duels, per Sofascore, in what was a masterful showing in the middle of the park.

As you can see in the table above, Yang and goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who pulled off three saves and three run-outs to keep his clean sheet intact, were also among the top performers on the pitch.

However, we have ranked Colby Donovan as the best performer on the night for the Scottish giants, as he provided a reminder of his quality after a shaky game against Hibernian.

Why Colby Donovan is undroppable for Wilfried Nancy

On Sunday, the Scottish full-back lost two of his three ground duels, per Sofascore, and was subbed off at half-time after being booked for a late challenge on Jordan Obita.

After that disappointing showing at the weekend, Donovan may have known that he needed to respond with a big performance against Dundee to ensure that the new manager does not drop him for the game against Hearts on Sunday.

Now, the Scotland U21 international is surely the first completely undroppable player for Nancy at Parkhead, because he was the best performer in the last game before his first match in charge.

Donovan won three of his four ground duels and three of his three aerial duels, winning 87% of his total battles, per Sofascore, whilst Maeda, for example, lost five of his six duels and struggled on that side of the game after scoring his goal.

As you can see in the table above, the academy graduate also added creativity in possession to go along with his outstanding defensive work, as only Reo Hatate (five) made more key passes on the night, whilst no one completed more crosses.

Donovan showed Nancy, who was unveiled before the game kicked off, that he is capable of delivering a quality performance at both ends of the pitch from the right-back position, which is why he should already be undroppable.

With Alistair Johnston still sidelined with a hamstring injury, the Scottish youngster should be the first name on the teamsheet ahead of the clash with Hearts on Sunday.

That is also influenced by Anthony Ralston’s disappointing form. Pundit Chris Sutton described his play as “really shaky” when he came off the bench against Hibernian, whilst he was also caught out twice by Mikel Gogorza in the Europa League clash with Midtjylland.

Given Ralston’s lack of form and Donovan’s impressive showing on Wednesday night, the 19-year-old defender will surely already be undroppable for Nancy in the short term.

Man Utd women's player ratings vs West Ham: Dominique Janssen magic delivers much-needed victory as Red Devils get back on track in the WSL

Dominique Janssen's sublime free-kick allowed Manchester United to avoid a first-ever three-game losing streak in the Women's Super League on Sunday, with a hard-fought and important 2-1 win over West Ham seeing them bounce back from losses to Aston Villa and Man City. The Red Devils, who have lost significant ground in the title race over the last few weeks, needed to get back on track here and they did exactly that, despite Shekiera Martinez's stunning overhead kick getting the Hammers back on level terms for a while in the second half.

Back on home soil, United started this game well, creating chances aplenty from the get-go, but they found West Ham goalkeeper Kinga Szemik in fine form, with the Poland international making a flurry of strong stops to keep the scores goalless for as long as possible. It felt like it was going to take something special to break the deadlock and, fortunately for the hosts, Anna Sandberg delivered, firing in a perfect cross that put the ball on a plate for Elisabeth Terland, who easily converted her 10th goal of the season.

West Ham, however, didn't lose hope. Martinez miscued her attempt when on the end of a great chance just before half time to level the scores but she made amends shortly after the restart when she looped a remarkable overhead kick up and over the returning Phallon Tullis-Joyce to get her side back on level terms. United, though, showed similar resilience and produced an encouraging response, with Julia Zigiotti Olme hitting the post and Melvine Malard heading over the bar before Janssen's brilliantly executed free-kick, which secured all three points for the Red Devils and allowed them to leapfrog Arsenal back into third in the WSL table.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Phallon Tullis-Joyce (6/10):

Showed a few moments of rust on her return from injury, after missing the last three weeks due to a fractured eye socket, but was generally solid despite adjusting to playing in a mask.

    Jayde Riviere (7/10):

Showed plenty of endeavour up and down the right, delivering some great crosses to create chances.

    Maya Le Tissier (7/10):

Carrying plenty of confidence into this game from a positive England camp, this was another strong display from the United captain, who helped nullify the lively Martinez.

    Dominique Janssen (8/10):

Produced a moment of brilliance to win the game, capping off a good defensive performance with that attacking quality.

    Anna Sandberg (8/10):

Another excellent display from one of United's best players this season. Her cross for Terland's goal was sublime.

  • Midfield

    Julia Zigiotti Olme (7/10):

A lively and effective performance in midfield, with her pressing, passing and movement all making her a tough opponent to deal with.

    Hinata Miyazawa (7/10):

Superb in possession while holding things down in the deeper midfield areas so that Zigiotti could roam.

    Ella Toone (7/10):

A tidy display in which she was so often involved in United's best passing moves.

    Attack

    Jess Park (6/10):

Had a lively game down the right but did lack the end product she normally produces, with only one notable chance created.

    Elisabeth Terland (7/10):

In the right place at the right time to break the deadlock, though could've scored a couple more with the opportunities she had.

    Melvine Malard (6/10):

Movement was great but she was surprisingly wayward with her finishing, considering the form she has been in. Should've got on the scoresheet at least once.

  • Subs & Manager

    Hannah Blundell (N/A):

Gave Riviere a breather for the final 10 minutes or so.

    Simi Awujo (N/A):

Injected fresh energy into the midfield for the closing stages.

    Fridolina Rolfo (N/A):

Another late sub who helped United see the win out.

    Marc Skinner (7/10):

Put out a team that created chances aplenty and trusted in that XI to get the job done, not making subs to disrupt the flow of the game just because United hadn't got themselves into the commanding lead that they could have.

Orioles Pitcher Had Comically Short Walk to Join Blue Jays After Doubleheader Trade

The Baltimore Orioles hosted the Toronto Blue Jays for a doubleheader on Tuesday, with both games played at Camden Yards. In between the two games, the teams’ front offices got a bit of business done.

After game one, the Orioles agreed to trade relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez to the Blue Jays. As there was another game to be played, that meant Dominguez was to report directly to the visiting clubhouse to join up with his new team.

Cameras captured the awkward moment as the reliever was guided through the stadium, from one locker room to the other, by a member of the Blue Jays organization as he set off to meet his new teammates.

It wasn't a long journey for Dominguez, despite being traded to MLB's only international organization.

It's the second year in a row that he was traded mid-season, having gone from the Phillies to the Orioles at last year's trade deadline, and now from Baltimore to Toronto this season. It will certainly be interesting to see if he's in his new Blue Jays uniform and in the bullpen for the second leg of the doubleheader.

Across 43 appearances, Dominguez, 30, owns a 3.24 ERA with 54 strikeouts over 43 1/3 innings.

Better than Woltemade: Howe's 9/10 Newcastle talent is an "absolute joke"

Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup campaign continues. Eddie Howe’s fine record against Tottenham Hotspur continues. The sense that the Magpies are gearing up for yet another glittering chapter in this incredible story grows stronger.

A pair of headers got the job done against Thomas Frank’s Spurs, courtesy of centre-back Fabian Schar and new striker Nick Woltemade, who arrived from Stuttgart for a club-record £69m fee in August, replacing Alexander Isak.

The German striker faced his detractors upon that high-profile and much-scrutinised move to the Premier League, but he’s passing each test with flying colours, and he proved his worth once again with a strong performance in the cup.

Nick Woltemade continues to impress

Woltemade, 23, has scored six goals from just 11 matches in a Newcastle shirt. That’s quite the return for a raw, up-and-coming forward trying their hand in a new country for the first time.

But he’s been immense, and his confident header against Tottenham, latching onto Joe Willock’s cross, underscored the quality and potential still to come.

Woltemade has drawn all the plaudits, with onlookers singing his praises once again as he helped his team advance to the quarter-finals. Yet again, he proved he’s more than just a goalscorer, creating two chances and winning four duels (as per Sofascore).

However, he wasn’t the best player on the pitch, and that’s a testament to the outfit Howe has crafted.

Indeed, there’s one man in particular who is starting to look like one of the very best in the business.

Newcastle's "absolute joke" outplayed Woltemade

Newcastle are defined by their recruitment, and while you could pick any number of Howe signings as jackpot additions, none stand taller than Sandro Tonali, whose rise has been well-documented over the past year, and yet he still shocks onlookers with his quality.

After a tough maiden year in England, the Italy international has grown into his skin and is now one of the Premier League’s best players. He simply has so many dimensions to choose from, and was praised to no end for his Man of the Match performance.

Described as an “absolute joke” who “just keeps getting better and better” by journalist Andy Sixsmith, there’s a feeling across Tyneside that the 26-year-old could be the key to shattering expectations this term, and he took Newcastle that step closer with a controlled performance against the Lilywhites.

Schar opened the scoring in the first half, but it was Tonali’s inch-perfect delivery that found the Swiss’s head. This is a man of many talents, who won both of his tackles and made seven ball recoveries besides.

But most impressive of all is that the 92-touch Tonali lost the ball only three times on the evening. He was sitting in the centre of the park, and yet he was almost untouchable as he orchestrated and engineered.

The Shields Gazette were blown away by the tireless performance, hailing Tonali’s 9/10 display and drawing attention to his energy and quality. In a sentence: he was peerless in the middle of the park.

Tonali just continues to be so effortlessly good. His football is a work of art, but he’s tenacious and gripping too, absolutely a completely-shaped midfielder.

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali

Woltemade might be the goal-getter, and someone like Bruno Guimaraes the stylish leader, but Tonali is the metronome, making everyone tick.

Not just Joelinton: Newcastle's "true legend" may now be on borrowed time

Newcastle may well part ways with this Howe mainstay at the end of the campaign.

Chicago's Trade Deadline Acquisition Mike Soroka Leaves Cubs Debut After Just Two Innings

The Chicago Cubs acquired pitcher Mike Soroka on July 30, one day before the MLB trade deadline, and the starter made his Cubs debut on Monday. Unfortunately, his first start with the Cubs was cut very short.

The Cubs pulled Soroka after just two innings vs. the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night as he was dealing with right shoulder discomfort, ESPN's Jesse Rogers reported. Manager Craig Counsell told reporters after the game that Soroka will land on the injured list, but it's unknown for how long or what the severity of his injury is at this time.

In his short outing, Soroka struck out three batters, gave up one run, which was a home run hit by Tyler Stephenson, and walked one batter.

Soroka was seen speaking to Counsell in the dugout ahead of the third inning.

Cubs starter Ben Brown jumped in for Soroka in the third inning as he's been resting since July 27.

The Cubs will surely hope that Soroka's soreness doesn't turn into a more serious issue. The team was in dire need of some star aces ahead of the trade deadline, and Soroka was their answer. Chicago also traded for some relievers, but Soroka was the "big name" starter the team secured.

The 2025 season hasn't been Soroka's best by any means. In 16 starts with the Nationals this season, Soroka was 3-8 with a 4.87 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 87 strikeouts against 24 walks in 81 1/3 innings.

West Ham dealt Jarrod Bowen blow as Nuno faces fresh concern about star winger

West Ham boss Nuno Espírito Santo faces a fresh concern about star winger Jarrod Bowen, with the Englishman poised to play a key role in the Hammers’ fight against relegation.

The 2025/26 campaign has plunged Bowen into the most challenging period of his West Ham career. While the 28-year-old continues delivering on an individual level, his club finds themselves in a perilous battle at the wrong end of the Premier League table that threatens to define his future.

The Hammers captain has been West Ham’s top goalscorer for four consecutive Premier League seasons, netting 47 times in that period, cementing his status as the club’s talisman since his arrival from Hull City in January 2020.

Bowen is surely a shoo-in for Thomas Tuchel’s 2026 World Cup selection, having only missed out on two England squad inclusions since 2023, but the questions lie around his long-term future with West Ham currently in a dogfight.

West Ham’s results in the Premier League so far

Sunderland 3-0 West Ham

West Ham 1-5 Chelsea

Nottingham Forest 0-3 West Ham

West Ham 0-3 Tottenham

West Ham 1-2 Crystal Palace

Everton 1-1 West Ham

Arsenal 2-0 West Ham

West Ham 0-2 Brentford

Leeds 2-1 West Ham

West Ham 3-1 Newcastle

West Ham 3-2 Burnley

Bowen will get real encouragement by the fact West Ham have just won back-to-back home games for the first time since last year, and the Irons are a club he absolutely adores. He put pen to paper on a long-term seven-year deal back in 2023, keeping him at the club until 2030, but those were very different times back then.

After his winner against Fiorentina in the Conference League final that year, which gifted West Ham their first major trophy since the 1980s, optimism around the London Stadium was high.

However, amid fan protests against the ownership and their steep decline in the last two years, speculation surrounding Bowen’s future is rife.

Liverpool are exploring a deal to sign Bowen ahead of 2026, with West Ham reportedly willing to consider selling their captain if they receive an ‘irresistible’ offer. The connection to Anfield isn’t new, but the circumstances have changed dramatically. Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp previously described Bowen as his favourite player outside his own squad, and Bowen actually shares an agent with Reds defender Andy Robertson.

Arne Slot’s side could be keen on the 28-year-old as an heir to Mohamed Salah, but he’s also been linked with the likes of Tottenham and Newcastle.

West Ham dealt Jarrod Bowen blow as Nuno faces fresh concern

That is according to CaughtOffside, who also report the star forward’s stance on leaving West Ham in 2026.

As per their information, it isn’t good news, with Bowen looking to leave West Ham next summer and potentially compete for a Champions League club to test his own ambitions.

With 130 goal contributions in 250 appearances since joining from Hull, Bowen’s contribution at West Ham absolutely dwarfs his teammates.

The fan favourite’s departure would leave a gaping void that West Ham’s current squad lacks the quality to fill. Beyond stats, Bowen embodies leadership, consistency and the ‘West Ham way’ during very turbulent times – qualities desperately needed as the club battles a drop to the Championship.

Selling a homegrown hero who married into East London royalty and delivered European glory would also come as a major disappointment to the fanbase.

Replacing Bowen’s goals, assists, work rate and leadership would require multiple signings, and perhaps even more than that.

The task would be David Sullivan’s biggest one yet, and amid all-time high unrest over his leadership, the chairman needs to tread carefully.

Guardians vs. Tigers Prediction, Odds, Probable Pitchers for Monday, July 8 (Trust Cleveland on Road?)

The Cleveland Guardians have opened up a six-game lead in the AL Central so far this season, and they’ll look to keep that going against a division opponent – the Detroit Tigers – on Monday.

Detroit enters this matchup on a three-game winning streak, but it is still six games under .500 and has a negative run differential through 90 games.

The biggest issue for the Tigers has been their offense, as they rank 26th in OPS and 21st in runs scored so far this season.

Both of these teams are starting pitchers that haven’t been on the mound much in 2024, but the Guardians are slightly favored on the road.

Here’s a look at the odds, probable pitchers and a best bet for this AL Central clash on Monday.

Guardians vs. Tigers Odds, Run Line and Total

Run Line

  • Guardians -1.5 (+114)
  • Tigers +1.5 (-135)

Moneyline

  • Guardians: -148
  • Tigers: +124

Total

  • 8.5 (Over -108/Under -112)

Guardians vs. Tigers Probable Pitchers

  • Cleveland: Gavin Williams (0-1, 11.25 ERA)
  • Detroit: Keider Montero (1-2, 6.60 ERA)

Guardians vs. Tigers How to Watch

  • Date: Monday, July 8
  • Time: 6:40 p.m. EST
  • Venue: Comerica Park
  • How to watch (TV): FS1
  • Guardians record: 56-32
  • Tigers record: 42-48

Guardians vs. Tigers Key Players to Watch

Cleveland Guardians

Jose Ramirez: A five-time All-Star, Jose Ramirez is having a great 2024 season, hitting .271 with 23 home runs, 76 runs batted in and 16 stolen bases. Ramirez is just one home run shy of matching his 2023 season total, a huge boost to this Cleveland lineup.

Detroit Tigers

Riley Greene: The Tigers outfielder is really coming into his own, hitting .261 with a team-leading 17 home runs this season. He also has a team-best .356 on-base percentage. The Tigers need more offensive help to really turn things around in 2024, but Greene is keeping them somewhat afloat right now.

Guardians vs. Tigers Prediction and Pick

This is a really tough game to bet strictly off of the starting pitching.

Gavin Williams made his season debut for the Guardians on July 3, and it did not go well. He gave up seven hits, two walks and five earned runs in a loss to the lowly Chicago White Sox – one of the few teams with a worse offense than Detroit this season.

However, Williams isn’t the only starter in this matchup that has struggled in 2024. Keider Montero enters this matchup with a 6.60 ERA in three starts, although he did turn in his best outing of the season his last time out (6.1 innings of two-run ball) in a win over the Minnesota Twins.

Despite that, I’m going to take the Guardians to pull off the win on the road.

Detroit currently is three games under .500 at home in 2024, and the Tigers and Guardians both may need to rely on their bullpens to win this game. That’s where a massive advantage exists for Cleveland, which ranks No. 1 in the league in bullpen ERA (2.59) in 2024.

The Tigers (4.26 bullpen ERA) simply can’t compete in that department, and I wouldn’t be shocked if Montero gives up a few runs since his Fielding Independent Pitching is still up over 6.00 in three starts this season.

Cleveland has been one of the best teams in baseball, so I’ll gladly take this short price on Monday for it to pick up a win.

Manny Machado Encouraged Reporter to Ask Better Questions After Padres' Elimination

The Padres were bounced out of the playoffs by the Cubs on Thursday night in particularly frustrating fashion. A controversial call by the home plate umpire led to a high-intensity confrontation in the visiting dugout after the final out. Not long after that, Padres players had to once again answer questions about their season ending far quicker than they hoped.

Jake Garegnani, a sports reporter for CBS San Diego, attempted to get Manny Machado to assess the season and got an interesting response.

Safe to say Machado was not impressed by the line of questioning.

"What type of question is that, my dude?" Machado said. "My guy. How do I assess the season? We just lost. How do you think I assess the season? How do you think I assess it? You tell me. What's a loss? We lost. How do you assess it? It's a loss. We lost. Come on, dude. I mean, you could ask better questions than that. Let's go. Come on."

Machado did have a bit of a smile on his face as he chose his words for what it's worth. But then when the gaggle at his locker broke up he had one more question for the reporter.

"You're going to wait for the last second to ask that question?"

Sleepless nights and 'madness' in training: How Bengal made the Ranji final

Bengal’s last title came in 1990 and with their current form, the drought could finally end.

Varun Shetty at Eden Gardens03-Mar-2020Bengal’s bowling coach, Ranadeb Bose, was in the XI when Bengal last played in a Ranji Trophy final, in 2007. Ahead of day four of the semi-final Karnataka, even with his side well in front in the game, Bose couldn’t find any sleep.”As a bowling coach you have sleepless nights,” he said. “When you’re defending 350 odd, 98 for 3 and Manish Pandey and Padikkal are batting, obviously you have sleepless nights.”At two-o-clock in the morning I was checking – last time they scored 250-odd runs to win an outright game, so I thought okay, we still have about 250 on the board and they have seven wickets, so there’s a chance.”The fact is that no team has made more than 250 against Bengal this season, but his nervous energy was justified. A finals spot is a big deal, and has been long missing from Bengal cricket.Bose was among many former and current Bengal players on the sidelines at Eden Gardens as an overwhelmingly celebratory atmosphere took over the stadium after Bengal’s crushing win. It had begun with the crowd, largely made up of children from various schools, cheering as all of Karnataka’s remaining specialist batsmen were dismissed within an hour of play on the morning. And while only two sections were open to the public, the Bengal team gave them a shortened victory lap, even collecting themselves at one point and sprinting towards the crowd before taking a leap for them. Not long after, the dugout region was swarmed, with a mix of journalists, cameramen, well-wishers, commentators, and administrators that might have come close to matching the crowd number in one section. If you were a part of the Bengal team in any capacity, you suddenly had more media engagements than you would have had all season.Subtlety is rarely an expectation when you come to Eden Gardens, but even by those standards this post-match atmosphere was positively surprising. The reason was fairly simple – Bengal’s last Ranji title came in the 1989-90 season and with their current form, the drought could finally end.”We worked really hard,” Bose said. “We practiced day in, day out. We even practiced on a clay turf, while it was raining, with synthetic balls. We’ve gone crazy this year. Worked really hard – gym, long distance running, short distance running. The trainer has done a really good job.”The coach and mentor Arun Lal also attested to this, and said the bowling side at his disposal is the best in India at the moment, which makes them favourites – an opinion he had maintained throughout the game.”There is no question about it,” Lal said. “In my eyes, we are favourites. I genuinely believe we have got a fabulous group of boys. And yet I say we are playing below our potential. God help the opposition when we get everything right.”We started first of July [last year]. We worked on running 25 rounds [of Eden Gardens]. Madness. Madness kind of training we did for two months, non-stop. It was a conscious effort to build up belief, physicality, body language, strength, power, fitness. Everything.”The endurance derived from such exercises has been clear throughout the season. With two league stage games left – against Rajasthan and Punjab – Bengal were already in knockout situations. In both those games, they found themselves in dubious positions, but managed to pick up the required points – chasing more than 300 on one occasion, and defending just over 200 on a pitch where their premier fast-bowling line-up wouldn’t have been as effective as elsewhere. They maintained their form in the quarter-final and semi-final as well. The hallmark of many a Ranji winning team has been comebacks, and Bengal now have four on the trot. In a season where their top-order batting has been objectively below-par on a consistent basis, they have managed to find ways to put away the lopsidedness.Anustup Majumdar picked up centuries in consecutive games•PTI “What has happened is we have come out of impossible situations.,” Lal said. “The first day didn’t go well and you feel the match is gone – from there we have come back and it really brings team spirit up. Somebody is bailing you out, whoever it might be. Then that really knits the team together. It’s much better preparation, what we’ve had, than if we had dominated every game.”For Bose, who was with CAB’s flagship grassroots and youth development project, Vision 2020, for more than five years, the process has played out right in front of his eyes. It was in one of those camps, for instance, that he spotted Mukesh Kumar, who was the hero on Tuesday and a vital cog of Bengal’s superlative fast bowling trio this season. The remarkable turn of form in the late stages could also change the conversation behind the scenes about Bengal’s cricketing structure, which for a long time has seemed to insiders and people around the game like it has stagnated. The batting hero of the quarter-final and semi-final rounds, Anustup Majumdar, for instance, will soon be 36 and was jettisoned into the XI a fair way after the season began. Ostensibly, this doesn’t say much about the bench strength but seasons like this could change things dramatically, as it had for Karnataka at the turn of the last decade.Barring Nilkantha Das, who debuted this season as a 30-year-old, the core of Bengal’s bowling line-up is a young one. With a few additions on the batting front, there could be a squad here that could dominate similarly for a few years. For one, they will have the 24-year-old Abhimanyu Easwaran as captain. After a lot of perception battles for being a migrant into the Bengal system, Easwaran has led Bengal into the final in his very first season.”What Bengal needed was his work ethic. At this juncture, where we were faltering last year, there was no better man for the job than him,” Lal said of Easwaran. “His example, his work ethic, his belief. Look at him fielding. Look at the pace. Look at the work he puts behind everything. And look at the desire, and the love for the game. Those are the things we want in a leader, so that we can follow. And when he came first time, I said we’ve got a terrific young man, and we’re all wiling to follow. Including me. Your energy, your desire, your work ethic, your everything – we’ll follow, you just lead. That’s what he’s done.”In many ways, the campaign has needed similar fighting spirit to the 2006-07 season, a phase prior to which Bengal had been battling relegation. Deep Dasgupta, who was the captain of that team, recalled what it had felt like to lead Bengal into a final.”It was huge,” Dasgupta said. “The year before that, we were one game away from relegation. But it was more of a process. You don’t try and think about playing the final or semi-final, because that’s not something you’ve done through the season. Right through the season you are focused on the process, about doing those one-percenters right, taking one session at a time. And that’s how I thought about it, and I would only suggest or advice to do the same.”And despite the undercurrents of pride and joy, it is likely that is exactly what Bengal will revert to. Throughout the season, they have been positive during internal discussions. But the conscious end goal has never been winning, just a commitment to doing their jobs.”Lal ji is not talking about winning Ranji Trophy,” Bose said. “Obviously it’s in our hearts, on our minds, we’re all thinking about it. But today also he said it’s not about winning the game but about doing your job. And that is what is making the difference. We don’t have the pressure of winning games. We have the pressure of executing our plans, that’s all.”I always think the process is important. The discipline is important If we can do that, not fly high, keep our feet on the ground – which we’re going to do, Lal ji is going to come with a bamboo and say “okay, neeche aa jao sab. Aur kaam karte hai” (Everybody come down, and we’ll get more work done). He’ll let us enjoy, today and tomorrow probably. And then settle down. Probably we travel day after and get into the mode.”And before they do, they will sleep well.
