London Spirit sign Richa Ghosh as replacement for Georgia Redmayne

Richa Ghosh, the 19-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, has become the third Indian player to sign a contract in the Hundred for 2023, replacing the injured Georgia Redmayne at London Spirit.Ghosh will join Smriti Mandhana (Southern Brave) and Harmanpreet Kaur (Trent Rockets) in the competition next month, who were retained from last year’s squad and signed in March’s draft, respectively.Active male Indian players are not permitted to play in overseas short-form leagues by the BCCI but female players have regularly appeared in the Hundred and the Women’s Big Bash League, among others.Ghosh’s salary in the Hundred is understood to be £12,500 (INR 13 lakh approx.), which pales in comparison to the INR 1.9 crore (£180,000 approx.) that she was paid by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the inaugural Women’s Premier League earlier this year. But the tournament will provide her with an opportunity to further her development as a player, having recently missed out on selection for India’s tour to Bangladesh. Her captain at Spirit will be Heather Knight, while other team-mates will include Grace Harris, Amelia Kerr and Sarah Glenn.Ghosh’s replacement deal was announced by the ECB on Thursday morning along with a number of other signings in the women’s competition, with Spirit also signing the recent England Test debutant Lauren Filer in the open-market process that followed March’s draft.Emily Windsor, who hit the winning runs in the 2022 final for Oval Invincibles, has moved to Welsh Fire for this summer while Trent Rockets have signed the former England middle-order batter Fran Wilson.ESPNcricinfo revealed last week the results of the domestic wildcard draft, which have now been confirmed by the ECB, along with replacement contracts for Matthew Short (replacing Michael Bracewell at Northern Superchargers) and Usama Mir (replacing Wanindu Hasaranga at Manchester Originals).Spirit have also found short-notice replacements for Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh, after they were pulled out of the tournament by Cricket Australia. Matthew Wade, the Australian wicketkeeper-batter, and New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell will come in instead.Adam Zampa will also return to the Hundred in the second half of the season, replacing Sunil Narine at Oval Invincibles when Narine leaves for the Caribbean Premier League after August 13.

Arsenal told Hale End has a gem with no ceiling who may be better than Saka

Whilst there’s no denying that it’s been a frustrating season for Arsenal on the injury front, those injuries have allowed Hale End’s best talents to emerge, leading to praise from former defender Philippe Senderos.

Arsenal's Hale End gem could be better than Saka

Ever since the arrival of Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal academy has been a key element to any of the Gunners’ success. When the Spaniard was attempting to drag the Gunners out of mid-table obscurity and back onto Europe’s biggest stage, it was Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe who emerged to take North London by storm.

The Gunners have set their sights on a Premier League attacker.

In the end, injuries opened the exit door for Smith Rowe who swapped The Emirates for Fulham last summer, but his impact at the start of Arteta’s reign should not be forgotten anytime soon. Saka, meanwhile, has become the star of the show at Arsenal and his injury has no doubt played a part in what is likely to be another failed Premier League title push.

In his absence, however, the Gunners have had the chance to turn towards Hale End to uncover yet another gem who may even be better than their current star. Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Arsenal Invincible Senderos was quick to lavish praise on Ethan Nwaneri, claiming that his potential has no ceiling.

The former defender said: “He’s a special player. I think he’s learned from a lot of the Arsenal players who play on the right, right-wingers who come in on their left. I think Bukayo is a great example, an academy player who’s done that.

“Ethan – even more so – in the last few months I think is a special player who can make things and plays without fear again, tries things even in difficult situations, but also understands what is required and I think it shows why he’s been getting minutes.

“I don’t think there is a ceiling, I think he has attributes for the modern game and definitely suits Arsenal’s style of play and they found a way because of injuries or thanks to injuries, to give him his opportunities.

“We’re talking about special types of players, Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly who have this maturity at a young age and are able to play at such a high level, it’s really impressive.”

"Special" Nwaneri is a rising star

Both Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly have stolen the show at times in an Arsenal shirt at times and both continued to do so on England duty in the last week or so. First came Lewis-Skelly’s moment, with the left-back stealing the headlines for his debut goal for the senior side. Then, it was the turn of Nwaneri to make his mark, scoring a sensational effort for England’s U21s on Tuesday night.

Although it’s worth noting that Saka was playing in a far less complete Arsenal side at 18 years old, there’s no denying that four goal involvements in seven Premier League starts makes for an impressive total for Nwaneri.

Five years younger than Saka, the latest Arsenal gem is only going to get better and better, perhaps even eclipsing his current teammate.

The acting duo have overseen massive changes in the fortunes of Wrexham since they took over in 2021. The Welsh side achieved three consecutive promotions and will now play in the Championship for the 2025-26 campaign. Ahead of competing in the second tier of English football, Wrexham have been issued a warning by their rivals Sheffield Wednesday's potential new owner.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

A 16-member consortium led by Florida property investor John Flanagan and Sheffield-born businessman Adam Shaw is exploring the option of buying Wednesday from Thai businessman Dejphon Chansiri, who has stopped his investment at the club. Shaw wants the club to become popular in the US and has told the Red Dragons that the Owls are 'way bigger'. There are also plans to build a new stadium to replace Hillsborough.

WHAT ADAM SHAW SAID

Speaking to , Shaw said: "Sheffield Wednesday are nowhere in America. We sell zero shirts and have no commercial presence there – that’s got to change. With the World Cup in the US next year and with the individuals we have in our ownership group, we could easily become Florida’s English football team.

"We should and can be way bigger than Wrexham. Ryan Reynolds would give his left leg to have what we already have at Wednesday in terms of our history and fanbase. Let’s use that."

He added: "We wouldn’t do anything without consulting the fans, but we think the club should have a home where people can park more easily and have up-to-date facilities. If we want to create a culture that ensures we become a sustainable, competitive and successful Premier League side, then we must be proactive. Premier League clubs are all upgrading their stadiums."

Slot intensifies £20m Liverpool move as Trent now close to Real Madrid deal

Following the latest update on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool future, Arne Slot has reportedly intensified Liverpool’s move to sign a potential replacement for just £25m this summer.

Alexander-Arnold "very close" to joining Real Madrid – Romano

Yet to put pen to paper on a new deal, Alexander-Arnold’s future has looked likely to be away from Anfield for a few months now – especially with Real Madrid lurking. And if there was any remaining hope that he would stay put this summer, then Fabrizio Romano’s latest update may well spark the beginning of the end for any talk of a new contract.

According to the reporter, the deal between Real Madrid and Alexander-Arnold is “very close” and he is “expected” to join the Spanish giants on a free deal in a major blow for the Reds. Whilst it will be news for those around Merseyside, however, Slot has already reportedly set his sights on finding a replacement and one that he knows well.

According to Caught Offside, Slot is now personally intensifying Liverpool’s move to sign Givairo Read from Feyenoord this summer in a deal worth around €25m (£20m).

The Reds reportedly see Read as a long-term solution to their fresh right-back problem following the 18-year-old’s solid campaign in the Netherlands. The fact that he’s already got an admirer in Slot should certainly help too – it was only this time last year that the Liverpool boss was handing Read his first-team debut at Feyenoord.

Now, the right-back looks set to get the chance to reunite with his former manager and complete the biggest move of his career yet.

"Fantastic" Read can replace Alexander-Arnold

After bidding farewell to their own academy graduate and one that Jurgen Klopp welcomed into the first-team, Liverpool would be wise to turn towards Feyenoord’s rising star and one that Slot brought through in the Netherlands.

Read certainly looks talented enough to eventually replace Alexander-Arnold at Anfield too, having assisted as many as seven goals so far this season – the same number that Liverpool’s chief creator has managed.

Earning plenty of praise as a result, football talent scout Jacek Kulig was left in awe of Read’s “fantastic performances” against AC Milan in the Champions League this season.

When the summer arrives, it could yet be Liverpool left in awe of the teenager’s performances as they look to forget all about Alexander-Arnold’s likely exit in the coming months.

At 18 years old, Read already ticks a number of boxes for those at Anfield as they look to hand Slot a familiar face within his backline.

Ferdinand was speaking to Mirror Sport when he was asked where the Red Devils should finish in next season's Premier League. The United legend suggested that despite this season's failures, Ruben Amorim should be aiming for no less that eighth place, with hopes of snatching a berth in the top six.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

United were dismal in the 2024/25 season, finishing 15th in the Premier League, their lowest finish in the history of the competition. Even so, to hear an Old Trafford hero talk about mid-table finishes as a realistic goal will rankle with the red half of Manchester. It was not long ago that Sir Jim Ratcliffe was planning for a league title win by 2028, a goal that looks increasingly farcical.

  • WHAT FERDINAND SAID

Ferdinand told Mirror Sport: "I think if you finish 15th this year, United have got to be looking to finish in at least the top eight, top six.

"I don't think you should be looking outside of that. And that's from someone who only thought about winning the league at United. So it's a big come-down in that sense."

    WHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER UNITED?

United are discovering their once all-powerful brand does not carry quite the same weight as it used to. It would appear their two main targets this summer, Bryan Mbeumo and Viktor Gyokeres, may not end up at Old Trafford. Without serious reinforcements to the squad, maybe even Ferdinand's realistic goal of finishing in the top 8 might appear outlandish come the start of the season.

Barcelona hopes to sign Diaz in this summer transfer window but will have to manage their accounts and comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations before initiating talks with the Merseyside club. As per , the Liga club will need to offload players, and potentially sell a notable one, to adhere to the rules.

Under the current La Liga laws, the club will have to sell a high-value player to sign and register Diaz. With the sale of Jean-Clair Todibo to West Ham United for €14 million (£12m/$16m), and Como making Alex Valle's move permanent by triggering a €6m purchase option, the club aims to act in accordance with the one-in-one-out policy.

In addition to these measures, Barca has sell-on clauses in the contracts of players they have sold to other clubs. Francisco Trincao of Benfica, Oscar Mingueza of Celta Vigo and Mika Marmol of Las Palmas all have a 50 per cent sell-on clause in their respective contracts. Moreover, the club can look to offload players who are no longer in coach Hansi Flick's plans. As the complexities deepen, the Blaugrana can try to sort other areas of the team, with Flick reportedly interested in Ivan Perisic, whom he worked with during his time at Bayern Munich. Left-back Gerard Martin has also been linked with a move, though he has dismissed such talk.

Mehidy unfazed by defeat to Afghanistan: 'One series can go bad'

“We are not worried about it,” he said. “We can plan better for the Asia Cup and World Cup”

Bangladesh are writing off this ODI series defeat to Afghanistan as “two bad days”, according to Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The hosts were crushed by 142 runs as their recent ODI form deserted them, and Afghanistan went on to amass 331 by breaking a few records and seal their first series against the hosts. Mehidy said Bangladesh were “not worried” about the series loss and will plan better for the two big tournaments later in the year, the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup.”I think we had two bad days. We are not worried about it,” he said. “We can plan better for the Asia Cup and World Cup. We play to win every game. We will find out where we lack. I said in a press conference a little while ago that losing against Afghanistan won’t make us a bad side. One series can go bad.”We have a good record in the last three-four years. We finished in the top four in the ICC ODI Super League. I think we can overcome these mistakes from the past two games, and play much better in the Asia Cup and World Cup.”Related

Trott: 'The longer Gurbaz bats, the more we win'

Mehidy rejected the idea that Tamim Iqbal’s retirement and then the U-turn played any part in the defeat in the second ODI on Saturday.”Everyone was shocked with Tamim ‘s decision. Nobody expected it,” Mehidy said after the loss Chattogram. “It was a break that day and we had training yesterday. We prepared for this game. But that bad feeling was temporary.”Mehidy said that Bangladesh had fallen well behind in the match when they couldn’t stop the Afghanistan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, who scored 145 and 100 respectively, from adding a massive 256 in 36 overs.”We gave away 30-40 runs more [than we should have],” he said. “We weren’t organised enough as a bowling unit. If our top order also made runs and had a partnership going, we could have taken this game deep. It became hard when the top order fell [quickly]”.However, Bangladesh’s bowlers brought them into the contest despite the visitors being well on track to post even 400. They grabbed nine wickets in the last 14 overs, thus restricting Afghanistan to only 75 runs in the period. That was a significant slowdown, particularly when they were going at above ten runs an over in the six overs before Gurbaz’s dismissal in the 37th over. Mehidy said that Bangladesh’s decision to bowl was to give their batters the best batting conditions under lights at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.”We expected the wicket to play better at night,” he said. “We batted first in the first game [after losing the toss]. The wicket was slow. It kept low. It improved in the evening, so the captain and coach thought that if [on winning the toss in the second ODI] we bowled well up front and then batted in the second innings, things will be easy for us.”Bangladesh were a bit slow in their chase and stumbled to 28 for 3 in the powerplay. The remaining six wickets – Ebadot Hossain didn’t bat due to an injury – fell in clusters of three each, too. And once they were 72 for 6 in the 19th over, the game was all but done.
