NZ pick uncapped Illing, McLeod, Sharp for SL series; Plimmer back after injury

New Zealand have picked a young uncapped trio of Emma McLeod, batter Izzy Sharp, and left-arm seamer Bree Illing for the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka. The squad of 16 also sees the return of Georgia Plimmer after recovering from a bone stress reaction in her hip which had sidelined her since November.Hayley Jensen, meanwhile, makes a comeback since last playing for New Zealand two years ago, after a successful domestic season. The experienced Suzie Bates will lead the side in the absence of full-time ODI captain Sophie Devine, who is on a well-being break and her T20I successor is yet to be named. Amelia Kerr will also miss the series as she is in India representing Mumbai Indians at the WPL.The uncapped trio has come through the New Zealand Under-19 squads, with McLeod, 18, having just played her second Under-19 T20 World Cup, and Sharp, 20, the captain from the first tournament that was played two years ago. McLeod was picked after she tallied 300 runs for Central Districts in the ongoing domestic one-day competition, where she averages nearly 43 with two half-centuries.Illing, also 21, has been a regular wicket-taker for Auckland in the same competition, and is third on the charts with 19 wickets at 21.10 apiece. Illing was among the stars for Auckland in the T20 Super Smash before that, finishing with an impressive economy rate of just 5.44 along with eight wickets. She had also been picked for New Zealand A last year.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“Emma, Bree and Izzy have been identified by Major Association and NZC coaches as players who have the desired competencies and skillsets to be effective in international cricket,” head coach Ben Sawyer said. “Emma’s been in good form in the HBJ Shield and her ability to hit through the off-side and run well between the wickets is really valuable.”Izzy impressed us with how she attacks spin, which is something that will come in handy this series.”The way Bree attacks the stumps and swings the ball back into the right-hander is really important in the international game.”Plimmer returns after last playing the ODI series in India in November, that followed immediately after New Zealand’s T20 World Cup victory in Dubai. Wicketkeeper-batter Polly Inglis receives her second call-up after being picked for the India tour although she’s yet to make her international debut. Otago’s Bella James is also in line to make her T20I debut, having made her ODI debut against Australia in December when Plimmer and Lea Tahuhu had missed out with injuries.Tahuhu (hamstring) and Rosemary Mair (elbow) are still battling injuries and Molly Penfold had been recently sidelined for at least three months because of a knee injury. While Mair is expected to be fit for the Sri Lanka T20Is starting March 14, Tahuhu is expected to make it in time for the Australia T20Is from March 21.Sawyer further said the games will be good to gain experience against spin keeping in mind the ODI World Cup in India in October this year.”Sri Lanka’s a tough opposition with a number of world-class spinners,” he said.”We will try different combinations this series, and I’m looking forward to seeing players adapt to different roles. It’s an opportunity to test batters in different positions, and try different bowlers opening up and at the death.”The ODI squad will get together on March 2 in Napier following the HBJ Shield final on Saturday. The ODI series begins on March 4 in Napier before moving to Nelson for two more games on March 7 and 9. The T20Is will be played on March 14 and 16 in Christchurch and on March 18 in Dunedin.

Fergusin 2.0: Rangers exploring Ibrox deal to sign "fascinating" £3m star

Glasgow Rangers manager Russell Martin is still looking to add more players to his squad before the summer transfer window slams shut at the start of next month.

Prior to the draw with Dundee at Ibrox last weekend, the Light Blues head coach confirmed that the club are not finished in the transfer market yet.

The Gers have already brought in the likes of Oliver Antman, Djeidi Gassama, Thelo Aasgaard, Joe Rothwell, Max Aarons, Nasser Djiga, among others, to bolster their options across the pitch.

But a return of two points in two games in the Scottish Premiership so far shows that there is still more work for the Ibrox giants to do to build a team that can compete for trophies.

Rangers exploring deal for Premier League midfielder

Despite already signing Rothwell, Lyall Cameron, and Aasgaard to add to their options in the middle of the park, the Gers are reportedly keen on a Premier League talent in that area of the pitch.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to the Scotsman, Rangers are exploring a deal to sign Andy Irving from West Ham United because they feel that he would be a ‘worthwhile’ addition.

The report claims that Celtic, Sturm Graz, Stuttgart, and Borussia Monchengladbach are also interested in the Scotland international, which means that there is plenty of competition for his signature.

Meanwhile, Claret & Hugh backs up that claim that Rangers and Celtic are exploring a possible move for the central midfielder, and adds that it would take a fee of around £3m to get a deal done for him.

Why Rangers should sign Andy Irving

The Gers should swoop to sign the Scotland international because he is a midfielder with the potential to be Barry Ferguson 2.0 at Ibrox with his attacking qualities.

Way before he was the interim head coach in Glasgow last season, Ferguson was a terrific central midfielder for the Light Blues. He scored 59 goals and provided 29 assists in 420 matches in all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

Irving only started one Premier League game for West Ham last season, but his form on loan at SK Austria Klagenfurt in the previous two campaigns suggests that he could be a fantastic signing for Rangers.

The left-footed maestro, whose football journey was described as “fascinating” by reporter Barry Anderson, showcased his ability to both score and assist goals at an impressive rate from a central midfield position.

As you can see in the table above, Irving caught the eye with 14 goals and 17 ‘big chances’ created in two seasons in the Austrian Bundesliga before his lack of minutes in the English top-flight last term.

These statistics suggest that the 25-year-old star could follow in Ferguson’s footsteps as a central midfielder and Scotland international who could make a big impact in the final third with goals and assists at Ibrox.

Whether Irving, who has not played in the Premiership since he was at Hearts in the 2019/20 campaign, can translate those performances over to Scotland with Rangers does remain to be seen, though.

At a potential fee of £3m, however, it appears to be a deal that could be worthwhile for the Gers, because they would be bringing in a homegrown, Scotland international, talent who has Premier League experience and the form in Austria to suggest that he could be Ferguson 2.0.

Rangers are reportedly interested in a deal for a star who would be an even better signing than Nobel Mendy.

Therefore, Rangers should be pushing to beat Celtic to the signing of the former Jam Tarts man because he could be the next goalscoring Scottish midfield star to grace the pitch at Ibrox.

'Great player' Pedri becoming a 'better leader' at Barcelona as Hansi Flick sings praises of ubiquitous midfielder

Barcelona continue to shine in La Liga with the team topping the table after a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad. Key players like Jules Kounde, Robert Lewandowski, and returning star Lamine Yamal impressed, but it was Pedri who stood out as both a midfield engine and an emerging leader. Hansi Flick praised the Spaniard for his tactical intelligence and influence, highlighting his pivotal role in Barca’s resurgence.

  • Pedri emerges as a leader

Goals from Kounde and Lewandowski secured the win as Barca came from behind to capitalise on Real Madrid's slip up and move to the top of the Spanish top flight. Pedri, who played the full 90 minutes, stood out in the middle of the park with his fine dribbles and ability to carve out chances for the hosts. Flick highlighted Pedri’s pivotal role in the victory, noting his development both as a player and as a leader on the pitch. The coach sees Pedri’s growing influence as crucial to Barcelona’s performance and team cohesion.

"Pedri is special, a great player. He is also becoming a better leader. He is everywhere on the pitch. He gives us control and knows exactly where he should be. He is very good and organises the team very well alongside Frenkie de Jong. I really enjoy those moments," said Flick.

    Barcelona’s comeback highlights team spirit

The German also praised the collective effort to bounce back from Sociedad's first-half opener after Kounde levelled matters just before the break and Lewandowski stole the win on the hour mark. He said: “We found it very difficult, but we also deserve this win. I really appreciate how my team is playing, how they perform. It doesn't matter if we change the starting XI a bit, because they all give their all and I love that. I am very proud. It's incredible. I am very happy for them and for the fans.”

  • Yamal makes an impact on his return

Barca were also boosted by the return of Yamal from injury, with the teenager making an immediate impact by setting up Lewandowski's winner a minute after he came off the bench.

“It's very good to have him back," Flick added, before noting the team's effectiveness from set-pieces. “We practice dead ball situations a lot and it's really important to have this strength. We are very happy with how it is going.”

    Navigating injuries and fixture congestion

Flick has expertly managed Barcelona’s squad through a congested schedule and injuries to key midfielders Fermin Lopez and Gavi. Despite these challenges, he has maintained tactical balance and team performance, rotating players effectively without losing intensity or control. The team will next face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on October 1.

Berta prepared to sell "important" Arsenal player who "goes under the radar"

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is prepared to sell an “important” player who “goes under the radar”, with the Gunners looking to recuperate much-needed funds after a summer of serious spending.

Mikel Arteta’s side are widely expected to mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title with Liverpool after splashing north of £250 million on eight key arrivals in Kepa, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze and Piero Hincapie.

There’s been promising signs from a few of them already, perhaps most notably Madueke, who has showcased real improvement since joining Arsenal at both club and international level.

The former Chelsea star has already been tipped to end Gabriel Martinelli’s career in north London, amid uncertainty over the Brazilian’s long-term future.

Martinelli is attracting interest from AC Milan and a move in January is very much possible, according to reports, but the Gunners value him at around £60 million and suitors were only willing to go up to £40 million in the summer (CaughtOffside).

Arsenal could be set for major changes in the wide area following the arrival of Madueke and Eberechi Eze, who’s primarily viewed as a central playmaker but can operate on the wing.

Alongside Martinelli, Belgian winger Leandro Trossard has been linked with a move elsewhere, even after he put pen to paper on a non-extended new contract with improved salary terms.

Arsenalplayers pose for a team group photo before the match

The 30-year-old is a wonderful impact player on his day, but Arsenal are running out of time to make any money back off the winger’s sale as his deal expires in 2027, and reports last week even suggested that Besiktas held out-of-window talks to sign Trossard in a potential £19 million move.

While this ultimately didn’t go anywhere, ex-Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown says that Trossard’s exit is still likely in January or next summer.

Arsenal prepared to sell Leandro Trossard as replacement mooted

Speaking to Football Insider, Brown states he’s “heard” that Arsenal are prepared to sell Trossard if the right offer comes in — despite him being an “important” member of the squad.

During his time in N5, Trossard has scored some big goals at crucial times, and fired home an impressive 16 in all competitions across 2023/2024 in what was his best season at the Emirates to date — including four in the Champions League.

Trossard also racked up eight goals and eight assists in the Premier League alone last term, so while he’s not one of the mainstays on Arteta’s team sheet, the attacker could still have a significant role to play before Berta finally decides they have to sell.

Tottenham sent Randal Kolo Muani warning as "frustrating" claim made

Tottenham Hotspur’s final signing of the summer transfer window, striker Randal Kolo Muani on loan from PSG, is poised to make his imminent Premier League debut against West Ham on Saturday.

The Frenchman’s versatility will be invaluable for Thomas Frank, with Kolo Muani able to play on both the right and left-hand side, though it appears he’ll most likely be used as an alternative to centre-forwards Richarlison and Dominic Solanke.

The latter didn’t play in Spurs’ 1-0 defeat against Bournemouth prior to the international break due to a niggling ankle problem, and while Frank suggested that Solanke could be back this weekend, it is definitely wise to have another option up top considering Richarlison’s fitness issues last season.

Kolo Muani has played the vast majority of his 269 total senior appearances as a striker, and there is reason for supporters to be excited by his arrival.

During his best-ever campaign to date in 2022/2023, the 26-year-old racked up an impressive 23 goals and 17 assists in all competitions for Eintracht Frankfurt, and this stellar form earned him a £76.4 million move to Ligue 1 heavyweights PSG.

While it hasn’t worked out for him in the French capital, Kolo Muani’s head-turning loan move to Juventus last term, where he managed 10 goals and three assists in 22 outings, showcases a player of serious attacking quality.

On the international stage, Kolo Muani has always maintained the faith of Didier Deschamps, even amidst his PSG exile, with the forward bagging semi-final goals against Morocco at the 2022 World Cup and Spain in Euro 2024.

The former Nantes sensation has also been a long-time target for the Lilywhites. Tottenham attempted to agree a deal for Kolo Muani in January before his switch to Juve, and ex-Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was personally pushing for him in the winter, according to club insider Paul O’Keefe.

Now, the Spurs recruitment team have got their man, but unfortunately for Frank, there is no option to buy Kolo Muani at the end of his loan spell if he manages to pull up trees in north London.

This is seen as quite an ‘un-Spurs like’ condition of the Kolo Muani deal, and pundit John Wenham has fired a warning to Tottenham over agreeing to a straight loan.

Tottenham sent Randal Kolo Muani warning as "frustrating" claim made

Speaking to Tottenham News, Wenham says thatTottenham are taking a “risk” by just signing Kolo Muani on a dry temporary deal, calling it a “frustrating” development and explaining that other sides could outbid them next year.

While there is an argument that Tottenham face not being able to hold on to Kolo Muani, the fact he’s arrived at N17 for essentially zero cost for the entire season is still a big boost for Frank.

Spurs need strength in depth if they’re to finish in the top four and contend for major trophies, and Kolo Muani is exactly the calibre of player to help them do this.

Moyes' next Barry: Everton make contact in race for "powerful" £21m ST

Everton looked to be on their way to a resurgence when David Moyes replaced the beleaguered Sean Dyche in January, and though the Toffees rose toward a comfortable mid-table finish in 2024/25, old issues seem to be resurfacing at the moment.

Moyes’ tenure has hardly turned stale, but he needs a few more signings before the closure of the transfer window, with Everton having struggled to hit their stride in their Premier League opener, defeated 1-0 at Leeds United on Monday evening.

Signings are needed, but since the Sky Sports pundits bemoaned Everton’s lack of activity, a £40m deal has been agreed with Southampton for the transfer of Tyler Dibling, regarded as one of England’s most exciting teenage prospects.

If The Friedkin Group manage to steer that one over the finish line, they look set to turn toward number nine.

Everton lining up deal for another forward

Dominic Calvert-Lewin left Everton this summer at the end of his contract. The striker has since signed for Leeds. He was one stream within a flood of departures, overseen by Moyes, deemed necessary after years of dour returns.

Replacing him, Thierno Barry has joined Everton from Villarreal for £27.5m, but, even with Beto in the ranks, Everton might be interested in signing another talented marksman.

It’s early days, but Everton like what they see, and according to Spanish outlet El Chiringuito TV, technical director Angus Kinnear is prepared to raid the Yellow Submarine once again this summer, having reopened contacts to discuss a deal for Karl Etta Eyong.

Etta Eyong scores for Villarreal

Though the 21-year-old centre-forward wants to continue his development in Spain, he’s tempted by the opportunity to play in the Premier League.

Villarreal would seek €25m (£21m) for his signature.

Why Everton want Etta Eyong

Beto and Barry make up a confident pairing for the number nine spot, but Eyong’s youthfulness and blooming consistency in front of goal suggest he might be a signing worth making to complete the set.

Perhaps what’s most exciting is Etta Eyong’s slick translation of goals in the Segunda division to a promising return in La Liga.

He’s yet to showcase his potency across many matches at the highest level, but the signs are certainly promising.

Etta Eyong’s natural-born clinical edge and his “powerful” physical profile, as has been noted by journalist Kai Watson, suggest he has what it takes to succeed in ther Premier League, and with similarities to Everton recruit Barry, hailing from the same club, you can understand Everton’s desire to bring him over, having already opened talks.

The Cameroonian striker scored last weekend as Villarreal kicked off their La Liga campaign with three points, winning 2-0 against Real Oviedo. Sofascore’s data reveals the up-and-comer won three duels and completed 80% of his passes too.

The 6 foot 5 Barry’s profile arrested Everton’s attention, and with Beto’s long-term future at the Hill Dickinson Stadium uncertain, striking a shrewd deal for a talent such as Etta Eyong could be a masterstroke

Indeed, he might have that covetous innate goalscoring touch, which could prove worthwhile for the Merseysiders as they package their squad with enough quality and depth to challenge at the front end of the Premier League.

Everton are interested in a deal to sign a star who could be even better than Jack Grealish.

Massimiliano Allegri stands by Christian Pulisic after AC Milan penalty miss as he insists he won't change spot-kick taker

Milan head coach Massimilano Allegri has stood by Christian Pulisic after the US national team forward missed a penalty against Juventus in a nail-biting Serie A encounter on Sunday. The manager, who returned as the Rossoneri boss earlier this summer, has firmly stated that one miss will not prompt him to change his team's routine penalty-taker.

Allegri firm on his position

Milan dropped two points against Juventus in a gripping encounter, and the main reason behind it was Pulisic's missed penalty in the first half. Allegri, however, did not criticise his main man up fron, insisting he will not be making a change. Confirming his trust in the 27-year-old, the Italian manager said, "Pulisic has always been the penalty kick taker. You don’t change it for a mistake."

He also shared his concern about who will be the penalty-taker in Pulisic's absence. "We need to understand who can be the penalty taker when Pulisic is not on the pitch," he added.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportPulisic is Serie A's top-scorer

Despite the spot-kick debacle, Pulisic continues to dominate the goal-scoring chart, having scored four goals in six appearances so far. He is the joint top-scorer, however, with Bologna's Riccardo Orsolini. Following him in the table are Napoli's Kevin De Bruyne and Inter's Lautaro Martinez, and Marcus Thuram. Apart from the four goals, he has two assists to his name, too. He has been influential in the Coppa Italia with two goals in two outings.

Milan lose golden opportunity?

Milan have lost only one game in the Serie A so far, and that came in their opening fixture against Cremonese. In their build-up to the much-desired Scudetto, the Rossoneri have accumulated 13 points in six games and have defeated defending champions and the current league leaders Napoli as well. A win against Juventus would have helped them move top after six rounds of competitive matches; however, the stalemate against the Bianconeri has left them third. Although Pulisic was the one who missed the spot-kick, Milan's frontline as a whole remain under scrutiny for their lack of ruthlessness, with Allegri urging them to kill games.

AFPMilan have important fixtures after the international break

Once the October international break concludes, Milan will have some challenges awaiting them. On October 19, they'll face Fiorentina, followed by a comparatively easier fixture against bottom-dwellers Pisa five days later. In their next two games, they will take on Atalanta (October 28) and Gian Piero Gasperini's Roma (November 2).
