Everton have made a fatal error by not signing Hirving Lozano before the World Cup

New Everton manager Marco Silva and director of football Marcel Brands will have their summer transfer targets firmly in mind even though it appears that they need to sell before they can bring players in due to the size of their squad, but they may well have one big regret when the window closes on August 9 – two days before the beginning of the new Premier League season gets underway.

The Toffees have been linked with a move for PSV Eindhoven winger Hirving Lozano, rated at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, every since the January transfer window, with the 22-year-old making a huge impression on the left flank for the Eredivisie champions following his move from CF Pachuca last summer.

11 goals and seven assists before 2018 showed the quality that the wideman had, and he helped push his team into title contention – eventually helping them win it ahead of Ajax – with his performances and the huge impact he was making in the final third.

While the Merseyside club did sign Theo Walcott from Arsenal and Cenk Tosun from Besiktas during the January transfer window, they weren’t able to get a deal done to bring the PSV man – who the Dutch giants understandably didn’t want to lose having only bought him a few months previously – to Goodison.

That was a time when Steve Walsh and Sam Allardyce would have been overseeing the recruitment, and they would have likely seen the summer as the perfect opportunity to get Lozano.

While the duo have both left and been replaced by Brands and Silva, whom fans want to sign another exciting £22.5m World Cup attacker, respectively since the end of the 2017/18 campaign, it is unlikely that Everton’s transfer plans would have changed when it came to targeting the Mexican, because of the quality he has.

The winger played his final match of the season on May 6, and knowing that he was going to be linking up with his country for the 2018 World Cup in Russia just a few weeks later, the Toffees should have made it their priority to get him before then.

However, Brands didn’t officially take on his role at Goodison Park until June 1, with Silva appointed a day earlier with discussions happening between them and Watford with the Hornets wanting compensation for the Portuguese boss.

By that point, they had left themselves little time to get a deal for Lozano done, and they would have been praying in a way that he didn’t have too much of an impact in Russia.

However, that hope was extinguished in the central American country’s opening fixture against Germany, with Mexico causing the reigning champions all sorts of problems and securing a memorable 1-0 win, with the 22-year-old getting the winning goal.

The PSV man impressed with his pace, skill and finishing ability – he perhaps should have had more than the one goal he did get – and he made Bayern Munich full-back Joshua Kimmich look like an average player, which is certainly no mean feat.

The very biggest clubs in Europe are always looking for talented attacking players, and with 19 goals and 11 assists in 34 for the Dutch club last term and now with him producing a standout showing on the world stage, one of them is surely likely to move for him when the tournament ends.

HYS: Who should replace Arsene Wenger as Arsenal manager?

Arsene Wenger may be on his way out of the Emirates in the summer, and there will be a long line of potential candidates to replace him.

Arsenal failed to reach the Champions League for the first time in Wenger’s 21 year-long tenure at the club last season, and despite signing a contract that would keep him at the Emirates until 2019, Wenger himself has said he may not see out the remainder of his contract.

Former Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta is on the club’s list of potential replacements, but the Spaniard’s experience at senior level is limited with only assistant manager experience at Manchester City under his belt.

[ad_pod ]

Former-Invincibles legend Patrick Vieira could be another option, who has the added bonus of senior managerial experience – albeit on the other side of the pond with the MLS’ New York City FC.

Thierry Henry would be Arsenal fans’ dream replacement for the under-fire Wenger, but he too has minimal managerial experience and has spent more time in the Sky Sports studio than the training pitch in recent years.

LVG needs patience, says former Man United star

Manchester United’s supporters must get behind Louis van Gaal despite the club’s embarrassing Capital One Cup loss to the MK Dons, according to Lee Sharpe.

The Red Devils slipped to a 4-0 loss at the hands of the League One side last night, with a second string XI which still included international players such as Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernandez and Shinji Kagawa.

Despite enjoying a fine pre-season, Van Gaal’s opening three competitive games are yet to garner a single victory, with a home loss to Swansea and a disappointing 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light against Sunderland ramping up the pressure early into his tenure.

However Sharpe – who starred for United between 1988 – 1996 – believes that the experienced former Bayern Munich and Barcelona coach needs time to get his methods across and the that he will be a success:

“It was a bad night obviously [against MK Dons] but in the bigger picture it’s not too bad,” he told talkSPORT.

“It is going to take time. We had Alex Ferguson leaving, then David Moyes coming in and trying to play the way he does, and now Van Gaal.

“He has only been there five or six weeks so it’s too early to judge him. A little bit of patience is needed.  It is a long-term approach for Van Gaal and I think you have got to trust him.

“He is the right man for the job. He is a strong character, he is not intimidated by big-name players, big signings, the size of the club and the task of the job at hand. I don’t think he is intimated at all, I think he quite enjoys it.

“It is just going to take a bit of time to get the team he wants and get them to play the way he wants them to play and to produce the standards he sets.

“I don’ think they are a million miles away. They have just not started as everybody thought they would do.”

Osman claims Gerrard deserves 100th cap

England new boy Leon Osman believes that Steven Gerrard thoroughly deserves to earn his 100th cap during Wednesday’s friendly with Sweden.

The 32-year-old Everton midfielder will be making his first appearance with the Three Lions, following a shock call up from manager Roy Hodgson.

Although they are inter-city rivals in the Premier League, Osman has hailed the influence of Gerrard and his importance on the pitch:

“It is fantastic to get to 100 caps,” He told BBC Sport.

“There is only a select band that has managed to do it and Steven deserves to be in that crew.

“He is a fantastic player and a leader of men.

“We first played against each other on Merseyside when we were 12 or 13.

“To see him now get to his 100th cap is fantastic but not surprising.”

Osman is also delighted to be in the squad, and admitted that he thought the call to represent his nation would never come:

“I hoped my time hadn’t passed me by,

“As an English lad I had a desire to play for my country and I was hopeful it might happen.

“I had stopped looking for my name in the squad every time. But I didn’t give up hope.”

Osman has been in fine form for high-flying Everton this season, notching up a succession of impressive performances in domestic competition.

West Ham fans react as report suggests they want to sign Bernard on a free

According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla on his official website, West Ham United have opened talks to sign Shakhtar Donetsk attacker Bernard, who is a soon-to-be free agent worth £14.4m according to Transfermarkt, and West Ham fans have been quick to react to the rumour.

Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini is desperate to strengthen his squad this summer to ensure they don’t flirt with relegation next term and instead aim for Europa League qualification, and Alfredo Pedula suggests that as well as signing Felipe Anderson from Lazio in a big-money move, he also wants his Brazilian compatriot for nothing with his contract due to expire at the end of this month.

The 25-year-old left-sided player would likely replace Manuel Lanzini after the Argentine was ruled out for the entire 2018/19 campaign, and with 10 goals and four assists last term he certainly has the ability to do exactly that.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”258359″ player=”12034″ title=”The World Cup Twitter Report”]

West Ham supporters, who have urged their club to sign a 25-year-old attacking World Cup ace, took to social media to give their thoughts on the story, and while one said “I’d take him over Anderson all day”, another said “Bernard excites me more than Felipe Anderson”.

West Ham fans react to Arnautovic saying he feels ‘at home’ with Hammers

Having cost £20 million when he arrived from Stoke in the summer, West Ham winger Marko Arnautovic didn’t exactly endear himself to the club’s supporters as he struggled mightily over the first half of the season. The Austrian appears to have turned things around though in the back-half of the season, and his seven goals since December have practically mirrored West Ham’s rise from relegation-battlers to a mid-table outfit.Arnautovic’s performance’s were met with derision from the stands earlier in the campaign, but now he is a firm fan favourite and he took the time yesterday to thank the Hammers faithful for their support.[ad_pod ]He said:“It hurt me in the beginning when I heard people whistling me in the stadium because they expected me to do better, but now I am playing for my team and playing for the fans because the fans are a big part of this Club.”Arnautovic has also added a gesture to his celebration in recent months where he crosses his fingers to make a hammer shape, as an ode to the East London of which he is now an established part.Hammers fans returned the favour with some heartfelt comments on Twitter…

SIX players to follow Jackson Martinez to Man United

They’ve already signed Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw, but Manchester United’s summer spending seems to be far from over.

The Red Devils are looking to rebuild under Louis van Gaal, and get back to the winning ways they and their fans have got so accustomed to. To do so, the Dutch manager looks set to bring in fresh faces at Old Trafford, to make this his own United squad. A new defender and midfielder already brought in, van Gaal has now been heavily linked with a new striker.

Porto’s Jackson Martinez has caught the eye of many European football fans this season with his fantastic goal tally. The striker bagged 20 goals last year, making it 46 league goals in just two spells with the Portuguese champions. And after bagging another two goals on international duty in the World Cup against Japan, the 27-year-old is quickly making a name for himself in the footballing world.

United have been heavily linked with bringing the Colombian to the Premier League, and could make a move even before van Gaal arrives at Old Trafford after the World Cup. But who else could join Martinez at United? Here are 6 players that may move with the World Cup’s hottest property.

Thomas Müller

The FC Bayern forward is loving life right now. Despite having to go to extra time to get to the quarter-finals of the World Cup, Müller and his German teammates are their mainly due to his goals. The false number 9 has 4 goals to his name in Brazil and has created a further two. Only James Rodriguez of Columbia has scored more. It means Müller now has 9 World Cup goals in his career, and is expected to surpass the record of 15 World Cup goals scored overall, held by Ronaldo and Müller’s international teammate Miroslav Klose.

And he’s only 24-years-old. An already experienced striker who is yet to reach his late twenties, Müller is the perfect man for Manchester United. He can play out on the right, centre of midfield and as a striker, making him extremely versatile. We know van Gaal is a fan of him, because he gave the forward his first start for Bayern back in 2009.

Stefan de Vrij

Quite a few of Holland’s current World Cup squad will be looking to impress van Gaal so much that the manager ends up signing them for club duty too, and one man in a great position to do so is de Vrij. Just Feyernoord defender is only 22-years-old, yet has started all 4 of Holland’s World Cup fixtures so far. de Vrij has looked focused and composed for the Dutch, reading the game well and stepping in to break up the play when needed.

The 22-year-old looks to be a great prospect for the future. And with United needing to replace Ferdinand and Vidic who have departed, van Gaal could bring in the Dutchman, and mould him into a United star. Who knows, de Vrij could arrive at Old Trafford as a World Cup winner.

Nigel de Jong.

He may be a former Manchester City man, but that wouldn’t stop de Jong being welcomed to Old Trafford in anticipation. Everybody knows what the 30-year-old brings to the game. A fantastic discipline, a strong challenge and a great eye for intercepting possession, de Jong could boss the Manchester United midfield, and provide the security in the centre of the field that was lacking at times last season. Whilst Carrick does a good job in possession for the Red Devils, he doesn’t carry the aggression and tackling ability of de Jong.

De Jong could be for van Gaal what Roy Keane was for Sir Alex Ferguson. Just maybe with a little less controversy. A powerful midfielder, de Jong will grab the match by the scruff of the neck, disrupt opposition attacks and turn defence into offence. Trusted by van Gaal, the former City man could become a hit at Old Trafford.

Thomas Vermaelen.

As van Gaal looks to fill the giant gap in defence at Old Trafford, one man likely to join this summer is Thomas Vermaelen. The Belgian centre-back, who can also cover at left-back if needed, fits van Gaal’s desire to have a ball-playing centre-back. Vermaelen is comfortable in possession, not put off by oncoming pressure, and could be the latest player to depart Arsenal for a rival team. After being frozen out of the first team at the Emirates, the Belgian has a point to prove should he move to United.

The 28-year-old is decent in the air, able to find a pass to a midfielder capable of unlocking defences, and not the slowest of centre-backs in the league. An all-round decent purchase for van Gaal should a deal happen once the World Cup finishes, the question will be if the Belgian causes Wenger to regret selling him to United.

Sami Khedira

Another option to strengthen the United midfield is German midfielder Sami Khedira. The 27-year-old, who missed a long spell of football with a knee injury, has a lot of competition at the Bernabeu, and could soon struggle for first-team action with Alonso, Modric, Isco and Illaramendi all battling for a place in the side with the German. But with United interested in making their midfield more secure, Khedira could be offered a place with United.

The Real Madrid man is a well disciplined midfielder, who is rarely interested in going forward and scoring goals. Instead, the German will happily sit and break up the opposition counter attacks, before getting his side back on the front foot. In his prime years and with top experience behind him, Khedira could be a great option for van Gaal to create a dominant central midfield at Old Trafford.

Angel Di Maria

The winger has made it clear that he’s not interested in warming the bench at the Bernabeu. The Argentine, who scored the winner against Switzerland last night in the World Cup, has been linked with both United and Arsenal over the past months, and is desperate to prove himself on the big stage. Struggling to fight with Bale and Ronaldo at Madrid, the Champions League winner, who was arguably the best player on the field during the final, is ready to show the world what he’s all about.

Real are always going to be linked with exciting attacking midfielders, all of whom are speculated to be in replace of Di Maria. With this in mind, the Argentine seems happy to call the end on his time in the Spanish capital, and United could benefit from that. Quick and full of tricks, Premier League wing-backs will be hoping Di Maria doesn’t move to Old Trafford. Red Devil fans would love to see an attacking midfield of Rooney, Mata and the Argentine.

West Ham ace hails the ‘best form of his life’

West Ham midfielder Mark Noble believes he is playing the best football of his life under Sam Allardyce, according to reports from talkSPORT.

The midfielder, who has been with the Londoners for his entire career, is delighted with his form during the club’s return to the Premier League.

He believes that Allardyce has been a big factor in both his and the Hammer’s recent performances, praising his bosses effect as the club look to establish themselves in the top-flight.

“I’m thoroughly enjoying it (life under Allardyce),” He told talkSPORT.

“I’m probably playing the best football I’ve played in a long, long while.

“I’m settled in my position. I’m settled at the club and obviously I’ve just signed a new contract, so I was happy with that.

“I’m just looking forward to being out on the pitch every week. I keep working harder and harder in training every week, trying to improve, trying to get better and I just want to keep working hard and get performances under my belt.”

Noble has built up a solid partnership with fellow midfielder Kevin Nolan, which was key in the club’s promotion last season.

Whilst the captain grabs most of the headlines, Noble’s contributions are equally effective, as he provides a shield for the backline as well as ammunition for the forwards through his set-piece delivery.

The 25-year-old has been capped at almost every level of England’s youth set-up, but has, as of yet, missed out on making his senior debut.

Manchester City fans urge the club to scrap deal for Riyad Mahrez

Given Manchester City’s status as Premier League champions, one would think that they would be able to complete their transfer business rather swiftly.

However, that has not been the case, as two of their targets are taking a while to get over the line.

[ad_pod ]

It has been widely reported that Pep Guardiola is interested in recruiting Jorginho from Napoli and Leicester City star Riyad Mahrez.

Both have become drawn-out sagas, particularly the pursuit of Mahrez, which dates back to January when the North-West outfit were denied a deal by Leicester.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255859″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Man City’s opening fixtures for the 201819 Premier League season”]

The latest development comes from The Mirror, who reported on Tuesday that Leicester have shelved interest in City’s Patrick Roberts due to the recent acquisition of James Maddison from Norwich City.

The publication claims that Roberts, who has spent the last two seasons on loan at Celtic, was initially planning to be part of a deal involving Mahrez, but now Leicester want a straight cash transfer.

The news has frustrated some City fans, who have called for the club to call an end to the deal.

Leeds United fans impressed by Heckingbottom’s first interview

A new manager is always under intense scrutiny when he takes charge of a club, and that statement certainly applies to Leeds United’s new head coach Paul Heckingbottom.

The Yorkshireman was appointed as the Championship outfit’s new leader this week, just a matter of days after Thomas Christiansen left Elland Road.

Heckingbottom has a big job on his hands as the club currently reside 10th in the table, seven points adrift of the playoff places.

The team have gone six games without a win, but they will be trying to get back on track this weekend when they face Sheffield United away on Saturday.

Following Heckingbottom’s appointment, which was controversial given that he extended his deal at Barnsley just four days prior, the new head coach gave his first official interview.

The Whites provided a snippet of the chat on Twitter, alongside a link to the full video.

The new coach seems to have gotten off on the right foot, with the fans at least.
