Paarl Rocks sign on Isuru Udana to replace David Willey

Willey has been ruled out of the tournament due to the need to manage his workload

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Aug-2019Sri Lanka allrounder Isuru Udana has replaced David Willey as Paarl Rocks’ international marquee player for the second edition of the Mzansi Super League. Willey has been ruled out due to the need to manage his workload, according to a statement from Cricket South Africa.Udana will be familiar to a South African audience, as he was part of the Sri Lankan squad that toured the country at the beginning of the year, and was one of the few players to make a real impact during the limited-overs leg of the trip. He averaged 55 with the bat in the five-match ODI series and a whopping 132 across the three T20Is, being dismissed only once. Udana collected career-best scores in both formats against South Africa, while also chipping in with three wickets.”We are very excited to get a player of Isuru’s calibre who was Sri Lanka’s star player during their T20 Series against the Proteas earlier this year,” said CSA Acting Director of Cricket Corrie van Zyl. “He made more than twice the number of runs as any of his colleagues and had a strike rate of more than 170. This is right up with the very best standards by any comparison. He has a career strike rate of 153 in the T20 International format and one of 96 in ODI’s.”He was a regular choice for Sri Lanka throughout the recent ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup which included his playing a crucial role in his country’s upset 20-run win over the eventual champions, England. One of his two wickets was that of England captain Eoin Morgan.”He is currently in action for Sri Lanka in their T20 Series against New Zealand and I am sure the Paarl Rocks players, management and fans will be keeping a close eye on his performances,” added Van Zyl.The MSL squads will be finalised at the Player Draft on Tuesday next week.South African Marquee Players:

Saha likely to miss England Test series

Saha, who hurt his thumb during the IPL, is likely to miss at least part of India’s five-Test series in England, with Karthik likely to replace him in the team

Nagraj Gollapudi15-Jul-2018Wriddhiman Saha is understood to not have fully recovered from his thumb injury and hence is likely to miss at least part of India’s five-Test series in England beginning in August. Saha, who hurt his left thumb while playing in the IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad, not only missed majority of the second leg of the tournament including the final but also the one-off Test against Afghanistan in June.Dinesh Karthik, who took Saha’s spot and kept wicket against Afghanistan, is likely to retain the spot. Karthik is already part of India’s limited-overs squad for the UK tour and should play as the wicketkeeper-batsman for the first Test starting at Edgbaston from August 1.

Rahane, Vijay to play against English Lions

Some of the India Test players who are expected to be part of the squad have already arrived in England this week. ESPNcricinfo understands vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane and opener M Vijay will feature in the India A match against England Lions, which begins at New Road (Worcester) from July 16.
Meanwhile, the England selectors have named a strong Lions XI, featuring six international players: Alastair Cook, Dawid Malan, Chris Woakes, Dom Bess, Jack Leach and Sam Curran, to take on India A.

While ruling out Saha for the Afghanistan Test, the BCCI had said that his recovery would take five-six weeks. The Afghanistan Test started on June 14, and by the BCCI estimate Saha would be fit by the end of July. Although the BCCI has not issued any fitness update on Saha, the selectors as well as the India team management will want him to not just test his fitness but also his match-readiness.The only chance Saha would have had to do that would come during the four-day warm-up match against Essex, which starts on July 25 in Chelmsford. In all probability, Karthik will test himself in that game, which is likely to feature all the Test specialists. It is not clear who would be the back-up keeper for Karthik in case Saha is ruled out. If Saha does recover and misses only a match or two, then he could even come in as the reserve keeper. Otherwise that spot is likely to go to Parthiv Patel, who played in the Test series earlier this year in South Africa.India started their UK tour with the limited-overs series against Ireland and England, the last game of which, the final ODI, will be played in Leeds on July 17. It is understood that the BCCI will announce the India Test squad after ODI series against England.

Two attacking line-ups set for Sunday blockbuster

Two in-form teams – Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad – with strong all-round performances will play the second match on Sunday

Sunrisers Hyderabad v Kolkata Knight Riders
Hyderabad, April 30, 2017
Start time 2000 local (1430 GMT)3:08

Hogg: No 3 the perfect slot for Uthappa

Head to head

This season: Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 3 for 20, Yuvraj Singh struck two sixes in his innings with a strike rate of 162.50 but Sunrisers Hyderabad only managed 155 in pursuit of their 173-run target.Overall: Kolkata Knight Riders hold a dominant 7-3 lead over Sunrisers

Form guide

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad (third): beat Kings XI Punjab by 26 runs, lost to Rising Pune Supergiant by six wickets, beat Delhi Daredevils by 15 runs.

  • Kolkata Knight Riders (first): beat Delhi Daredevils by seven wickets, beat Rising Pune Supergiant by seven wickets, beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 82 runs.

The likely XIs

Sunrisers Hyderabad 1 David Warner (capt), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Moises Henriques, 6 Naman Ojha (wk), 7 Deepak Hooda, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Ashish Nehra, 11 Siddarth KaulKolkata Knight Riders 1 Gautam Gambhir (capt), 2 Sunil Narine, 3 Robin Uthappa (wk), 4 Manish Pandey, 5 Yusuf Pathan, 6 Suryakumar Yadav, 7 Colin de Grandhomme, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 10 Kuldeep Yadav, 11 Umesh Yadav

Strategy punt

Sunil Narine could very well open the batting. No surprises there. Maybe Knight Riders should also consider opening the bowling with him, against two left-handed Sunrisers openers. While David Warner has scored a decent 67 runs off 50 balls against Narine, Shikhar Dhawan has only managed 31 runs off 30 balls. When Narine bowled one over to them in the Powerplay earlier in the season, he conceded seven runs, including three singles and two dots in the over.

Stats that matter

  • Sunrisers are the only side yet to lose a home game this season, while Knight Riders are the only team to win three away games so far
  • Robin Uthappa is the most prolific batsman in the middle overs (seven to 15) this season. He has amassed 225 runs off 124 balls at a commanding strike rate of 181
  • This could also be Uthappa’s best IPL season if he keeps scoring the way he has been. His average this IPL – 41.37 – is his second-best, behind 44 in IPL 2014. His strike rate of 168 in 2017 is second best after 171.55 in IPL 2010 and he has smashed 17 sixes already. In the last two seasons combined, he had struck only 15 sixes in 28 innings.
  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Sunrisers’ top wicket-taker and most economical bowler (minimum five overs) this season, has never dismissed Gautam Gambhir or Uthappa in the IPL. Gambhir has scored 72 runs off 63 balls against Bhuvneshwar, and Uthappa has collected 63 runs off 51 balls.
  • Among the current Knight Riders bowlers, Umesh Yadav has been most successful against Warner. The fast bowler has dismissed him three times while conceding 30 runs off 23 balls. No bowler has dismissed Warner more than three times in the IPL.

Wyatt joins Sussex; Birmingham stage double-headers

Sussex Women have signed England allrounder Danielle Wyatt to help bolster their spin-bowling department

George Dobell29-Mar-2016Sussex Women have signed England allrounder Danielle Wyatt. They hope that Wyatt, who was previously with Nottinghamshire, will fill the spin-bowling hole left by the recently-retired Holly Colvin.Wyatt, an off-spinning batsman who enjoyed an impressive Big Bash season, is currently a member of the England squad that has made it to the semi-final of the World T20.”Playing with and against the best players in the country can only benefit me and it’s going to be great fun playing alongside the likes of Sarah Taylor, Georgia Elwiss and Georgia Adams,” she said. “Hopefully I can add to the spin and batting department and help push for the Championship with this brilliant side we’ve got.”Sussex’s director of women’s cricket Charlotte Burton said: “It is fantastic news that Danni will be joining the Sussex Women. Danni is a talented all-rounder who will strengthen all departments for us, and will be a great addition with the ball, having lost Holly Colvin to retirement.”Danni will fit in perfectly with the squad, especially as she played Junior County Age Group cricket with Georgia Elwiss at Staffordshire, and she knows many of the players already through the county set-up and at England level.”Meanwhile, underlying the increased importance of the women’s game to counties, Warwickshire have announced that some of their home T20 fixtures will take place as double-headers before games involving the men’s team.Birmingham Bears Women will take on Nottinghamshire at Edgbaston on Sunday 19 June, before Birmingham play Lancashire Lightning, while on Sunday July 17, the women’s side will play Lancashire followed by the men’s team playing Leicestershire Foxes.”Not only will it provide our women’s team with a chance to play in-front of a big crowd at an international venue, but it gives our Members and supporters an opportunity to watch an additional match at no extra cost,” Warwickshire chief executive Neil Snowball said.”Whilst we were disappointed to recently miss out on hosting a team in the new Women’s Super League, we’re committed to growing the women’s game and we hope that this initiative and our grassroots development of the game will inspire more women and girls to get involved in cricket.”

Essex wait on how Panesar gels

On Wednesday, Nigel Hilliard, the Essex chairman, said that the prospects of Monty Panesar remaining an Essex cricketer next year will be dependent on how well he fits into the dressing-room for the remainder of the season

Ivo Tennant at Colchester22-Aug-2013On Wednesday, Nigel Hilliard, the Essex chairman, said that the prospects of Monty Panesar remaining an Essex cricketer next year will be dependent on how well he fits into the dressing-room for the remainder of the season.Given that he has been in the middle for most of his first few days at Colchester, bowling no fewer than 54 overs, he has hardly had time to converse with his new colleagues. Yet, according to James Foster, his captain, the signs are highly auspicious.”I had been with him on an England Lions tour and I knew him to be a quality guy,” Foster said. “Monty has fitted in really well. He keeps himself to himself but he has shown great exuberance around the dressing-room and enjoys a bit of banter. It has helped that he has known other players from the past – he has played a lot of cricket with Ravi Bopara and against Gautam Gambhir.””I don’t know what has been agreed between Essex and Sussex and have no idea if he will be back next season – that is down to the powers-that-be – but there is no question he has gone down well. I thought his bowling was excellent on a good batting pitch which did not offer anything in the way of spin. His control was relentless. It does not look as if the pitch is going to break up, either.”The perception from the boundary was that Panesar was firing the ball in at the batsmen, striving for containment and maidens rather than enticing them into trying to hit against such turn as there was or over the top. Not so, felt Foster. “There was plenty of variation and he mixed his pace up nicely. The only way a spinner could get a lot out of this pitch was through control. He was bowling against good, in-form batters. That was what I, as a wicketkeeper, found to be exceptional.”Foster said the club had had to move smartly when they knew Panesar was being released by Sussex and was amused that Northamptonshire had arrived at Colchester at the start of this week anticipating that the England spinner would be turning out against Essex. “Monty could make the difference between us gaining promotion and remaining in the second division,” he said. “In theory, pitches take spin at this time of year and that is why we went for him. I am not sure whether he will play in our remaining one-dayers.”Panesar is staying in a Colchester hotel this week and will then move into the Chelmsford area. Foster said that as part of the agreement over his release from Sussex, he was not be permitted to join a Division One club – in other words, he would not be allowed to play against them for the remainder of the season. The Essex captain was unaware that Sussex had prevented him from speaking to the media during the Colchester festival. There was no play on the third day to test whether or not there would be anything in the pitch to encourage the spinners on both sides. The presence of Panesar has been well received by Essex members and supporters, but inevitably there has been the odd grumble over the wages that will be paid to him between now and the end of the season. He will remain on the same salary he was receiving from Sussex. After that, the club will be competing in a free market.

Kirsten takes break before World Twenty20

Gary Kirsten, the South Africa coach, will leave the England tour a couple of days early and miss the final Twenty20 international at Edgbaston

Andrew McGlashan11-Sep-2012Gary Kirsten, the South Africa coach, will leave the England tour a couple of days early and miss the final Twenty20 international at Edgbaston to spend some time with his family before the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka.Russell Domingo, the assistant coach, will take charge of the squad for the last match of the tour. South Africa remain 1-0 up after the washout at Old Trafford and it had been a long-term part of the planning that Kirsten would spend a few extra days at home.”I have made a decision to go home and to see my family, that is something that has always been part of my thinking when I took up this job,” he said. “I think it will be good for the team, just to have me out of the space for a little bit and to see how the ship runs. I’m looking forward to seeing how that unfolds.”South Africa have a warm-up match in Sri Lanka on September 17 before their first group match three days later against Zimbabwe. Following the tournament South Africa will return home for a short period before leaving for their tour of Australia, which includes three Tests from early November to early December, before a full home season with visits from New Zealand and Pakistan. Other than missing part of the Australia Test in Cape Town last year when his wife had a baby, Kirsten has been ever-present since taking the job in June 2011.Regardless of the outcome of the final Twenty20 this will go down as a hugely successful tour for Kirsten after South Africa secured the Test series 2-0 to go to No. 1 in the world. A more inexperienced team then fought back to level the one-day contests at 2-2, although that meant losing the top ranking they had gained earlier in the series. If it had not rained in Manchester on Monday, they were favourites to take theTwenty20 series there.Kirsten is not the only coach who has taken time away from his team recently. England have used a similar approach with Andy Flower, with him missing the final one-day international against Trent Bridge – a match where England were heavily beaten. Last year he also sat out the ODI against Ireland, in Dublin, and on both occasions Richard Halsall, the fielding coach, took charge. There is also a strong likelihood that Flower will be given another, more extended break, from his role at some point over the next six months, part of an acknowledgement that it is not only the players that need their workloads managed.

Derbyshire on top despite battling Newton

Derbyshire edged the second day of their County Championship match against
Northamptonshire at Wantage Road despite Rob Newton falling just short of a
century

George Dobell at Wantage Road21-Jul-2011
ScorecardRob Newton could have been forgiven for feeling some frustration of late. After capping an impressive first season with a maiden Championship century against Leicestershire in the final game of last year, he might well have expected a prolonged run in the side at the start of this campaign.Instead he has had to wait until now for his opportunity. The 21-year-old has been forced to bide his time as Northants have put their trust in the experienced middle-order trio of Mal Loye, David Sales and Rob White. Indeed, had Sales or Alex Wakely been fit for this match, Newton may well have missed out once again. As it is, however, Newton has seized his chance with both hands. Demonstrating a naturally positive approach, he dominated the Derbyshire attack with some style and fell just six short of what would have been a second century in successive Championship games. It was an impressive innings. Newton thumped 18 fours – that’s 72 of his 94 runs – as he took full toll of some loose Derbyshire bowling. His cutting was especially impressive, but he also drove and pulled with proficiency. He’ll prove hard to leave out now.Stephen Peters was the only other Northants batsman to look comfortable for any period of time. Though he adopted a more watchful approach than Newton, Peters leaned into some typically elegant drives and helped his partner add 139 in 34.3 overs for the third-wicket.For much of the afternoon session, Derbyshire’s bowlers lacked the discipline to apply the requisite pressure. Though the immaculate Tony Palladino produced a fine ball for White, well caught by Luke Sutton as he edged one he had to play, and Ben Howgego steered obligingly to the keeper – a shot that left the batsman with his head in his hands – there was too much loose bowling to trouble Newton or Peters.Jon Clare stuggled with his length, Ross Whiteley was wild and Mark Turner, in his early spell, was all over the place allowing Newton, in particular, to put the poor balls away with ease. On a pitch that provides just a hint of uneven bounce, Derbyshire may yet come to rue their profligacy. They still hold the upper hand, however. Peters fell, very well caught at short-leg, as he tried to turn an off-break behind square, before Newton’s fine innings ended when he edged a full ball that may have left him slightly.More importantly, Derbyshire produced a much improved performance after tea. Turner emerged almost unrecognisable, bowling not just with pace but with excellent control and consistency, too. Those are words that may surprise followers of Durham or Somerset, Turner’s previous two clubs, but he showed in his post-tea spell why he has always been seen as a bowler of some potential.Loye, who looked horribly out of touch as he laboured over 50 balls for his six runs, was put out of his misery as Turner induced a tentative edge to the slips, before Andrew Hall missed a straight one and was leg before.Earlier Palladino and Groenewald extended their overnight partnership to 78; a Derbyshire record in first-class matches against Northants. Palladino, launching into a series of crunching straight drives, recorded the third half-century of his first-class career and his first for his new club but, more importantly, the pair helped their side to a fourth batting bonus point and a strong platform in a game that could go a long way towards earning them promotion. Derbyshire’s final total – 364 – represented a fine recovery from the depths of 39 for 5 the previous morning.

Kenya slump to third defeat

Baroda Cricket Association XI handed Kenya their third successive defeat in the tri-series as the hosts fell short by 32 runs in their chase of 257 in Nairobi

Cricinfo staff03-Aug-2010
ScorecardBaroda Cricket Association XI handed Kenya their third successive defeat in the tri-series as the hosts fell short by 32 runs in their chase of 257 in Nairobi.Pinal Shah, the captain, and Yusuf Pathan put on 98 runs for the fourth wicket after Baroda were in trouble at 90 for 3. Both batsmen hit aggressive sixties before Shah fell to offspinner James Ngoche. At 227 for 4, with Pathan at the crease, Baroda were poised to score 300. However, Pathan’s dismissal to Ngoche triggered a collapse and Baroda lost their last six wickets for 29 runs. Ngoche took three of those six wickets, finishing with 4 for 59 off eight overs, as Baroda were dismissed with 26 balls remaining.Kenya had been reduced to 33 for 3 in their chase when Collins Obuya and Jimmy Kamande came together. The duo added 125 runs with Kamande being particularly watchful, taking 99 balls for his 68. Once Obuya fell for 86, however, the target of 257 proved beyond the other batsmen, and Kenya finished on 224 for 8 off 50 overs.

Hazlewood hopeful of WTC final: 'My fitness is pretty good'

Australia quick has returned to bowling at close to full intensity as he recovers from some minor soreness in his previously injured side

Alex Malcolm31-May-2023Australia quick Josh Hazlewood believes he is a chance to play in the World Test Championship final against India provided he can get through some heavy training loads over the next week after leaving the IPL early due to some soreness in his side.Hazlewood played just three matches in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bangalore after arriving to the tournament late due to an Achilles issue that saw him miss Australia’s entire four-match Test series with India in February and March and the three-match ODI series that followed. The decision to withdraw Hazlewood from the IPL early was precautionary and scans cleared him of any damage to his side. He has suffered two side strains in the past two years which saw him miss four Tests in the 2021-22 home Ashes series and then three more last summer against West Indies and South Africa.Related

But he was able to bowl at home in Sydney before travelling with the team to England last week. The squad held their first official training session in England on Tuesday in Formby in West Lancashire where Hazlewood went at close to full tilt having had a gentle bowl on his own shortly after arriving in England. He told the ICC that he is close to full fitness but would need to get through a week’s worth of bowling to be declared fit to play in the WTC final against India starting next Wednesday at the Oval in London.”My fitness is pretty good,” Hazlewood said. “It is just a matter of ticking off every session from here until that date basically.”In T20 you are bowling a lot of various different balls every over. A wide yorker to a bouncer to a slower ball, and [the side] just got jammed up a little bit and a bit of scar tissue from previous injuries flared up.”It calmed down pretty quickly. I had a week off, I didn’t quite get back to going 100 percent at [the] IPL, but the last few bowls have been good and I have been building up nicely.”Even if Josh Hazlewood is fit, there is a call to be made between him and Scott Boland•Getty Images

Australia began their UK tour in Lancashire with a golf trip that included a training session at Formby on Tuesday before heading to London on Wednesday where they will hold a three-day camp at Beckenham.Hazlewood will likely have to get through two solid bowling sessions on Thursday and Saturday if he’s any chance to play in the WTC final. Australia will train at the Oval on Monday and Tuesday and the quicks often have another solid bowling session two days out from a Test match before resting the day prior to the match.Australia’s selectors will have to make a decision as to whether to back Hazlewood despite an interrupted preparation or go with the durable Scott Boland who is coming off a 10-week break since his last outing in the Sheffield Shield final in March.Michael Neser and Sean Abbott are not in Australia’s official 15-man squad for the WTC final or the 17-man squad for the Ashes that immediately follows the final but both have been pulled out of the Vitality Blast for their respective counties Glamorgan and Surrey to train with the Australian squad in Beckenham.Australia’s side will be settled for the WTC final outside of the decision between Hazlewood and Boland, with Pat Cummins returning to captain the team after missing the last two Tests in India for family reasons. Mitchell Starc is fully fit having played as the lone quick in Australia’s final two Tests in India after missing the first two due to a finger injury.Hazlewood has only played four of Australia’s last 19 Test matches and has not played in back-to-back first-class games since early 2021. He was aware that six Tests in seven weeks would be a big ask for the fast bowlers to undertake despite a desire to play every game.”If you asked that question three years ago I probably would have said I would have liked to play all six Tests, but it is just different now,” Hazlewood said. “It is just so tightly consumed together now and coming off not an ideal build-up, it is getting there now.”But we have got enough quicks here and a couple of others playing county cricket to cover all bases. Pat is perhaps looking at all six potentially depending how much we bowl in each so you play it by ear a little bit. It is such a dense schedule, it is tough.”David Warner will also return at the top of the order after missing the final two Tests in India due to a broken arm. Travis Head opened in the final two Tests in India but will return to No. 5 with Peter Handscomb left out of the WTC and Ashes squads entirely despite playing all four Tests in India.Australia’s star allrounder Cameron Green did not travel to Lancashire with the squad early. He instead made a short trip home to Perth following Mumbai Indians’ loss to Gujarat Titans in the IPL Qualifier on May 26 and will link up with Australia’s WTC squad in London. Green is the only member of Australia’s squad who had not been home since January having been in India since the start of the Border-Gavaskar series.Green was struck on the left forearm while batting during the IPL Qualifier and retired hurt but he did return to bat and there are no concerns over his fitness ahead of the WTC final.
