Two long-hops, one legspinner, two pulls: how did Bairstow go against Todd Astle?
ESPNcricinfo staff26-Mar-201870.2 Astle to Bairstow, no run, Boult has put down a sitter. Oh that is terrible cricket. Just awful from everyone involved. Astle drops it halfway down the pitch, Bairstow looks to pull and lobs it straight to Boult at mid-on who grabs at it like he hasn’t seen it at all. It’s a straightforward take, waist height, no real pace on it. Something’s gone wrong with the sight there.Todd Astle is in disbelief after Trent Boult drops a sitter•Getty Images
72.4 Astle to Bairstow, OUT, can you believe it?! Bairstow has played another pull with no control, and this time he’s found Williamson at short midwicket. Another long-hop from Astle, draws a loose shot. This one is turning away a little more than the previous one and he drags it a long way.
Leeds United have finally got their season underway, but Daniel Farke will be keen to ensure his side do not rest on their laurels after claiming a first Championship win in four attempts…
Who are Leeds United signing?
It has been a tumultuous summer for the Whites, who despite welcoming five new faces into Elland Road have seen their window marred by the numerous outgoings. Despite the bulk of a lucrative squad underperforming, they were seemingly unwilling to stay and help pull the club out of the mess they created.
As such, the German boss will be keen to bolster his side further, having showcased their attacking talents with a splendid win yesterday over top-of-the-league Ipswich Town.
For all the benefits plucked from such a hearty display, the shining light was to see their new striker instantly get off the mark, firing home from close range to add their third of the day.

Now, perhaps in an effort to place their faith in Joel Piroe, the new manager could be set to build his squad around the Dutchman, with their reported interest in Djed Spence clearly seeking to do so.
The attack-minded full-back is massively out of favour at Tottenham Hotspur, and valued at just €12.9m (£11m) by FootballTransfers.
How good is Djed Spence?
Although his career has stuttered since his £20m switch to north London, the former England U21 international still remains a promising young star surely raring to reignite a career that once promised much.
Especially after his 2021/22 season, where he caught the eye whilst on loan for a Nottingham Forest side that claimed promotion to the top flight.
He was dynamic, relentless, and a breath of fresh air down the right flank for Steve Cooper, earning huge praise from former Forest star Brian Laws:
"He has been the standout player in the Forest side and we are talking about a full-back. Full-backs do not tend to get many headlines. He grabs them by the handful. In every single game, he has a positive impact.
"He has power going forward, he has electric pace, he has an abundance of skill, he can drop his shoulder, step over, go inside or outside — he is a major threat. I’ve been impressed with his one-to-one defending. He is decent on the back post, he is strong in the air. There is nothing I have seen that you could call a weakness.”
This attacking impetus showed up in his numbers too, as the 23-year-old scored twice and assisted four, all whilst averaging one key pass, 1.5 interceptions and 1.4 tackles per game throughout that Championship term, via Sofascore.
djed-spence-1
You only have to imagine him powering down the right to deliver for Piroe, who has scored 19 and 22 in his last two league campaigns, and things are finally looking promising once again for the Yorkshire outfit.
Spence is certain to aid in the potential improvement of those figures, with his presence set to forge plenty of chances should he recapture his form of old – especially given that, when compared to other full-backs across Europe, he sits in the top 8% for pass completion per 90, the top 7% for progressive carries per 90, and the top 5% for successful take-ons per 90, via FBref.
At the very least his tireless running will provide enough of a threat to draw the interest of defenders, affording more space for the former Swansea City hitman to light up his new environment.
The hope will be that this combination can be struck instantly, to help forge plenty of goals for the Elland Road crowd to enjoy, and fire them back into the Premier League with ease.

O jogo
Dhaka Dynamites, banking on pure power hitting and a sensational trio of spin bowlers, reached the 2017 BPL final with a 95-run win over Comilla Victorians in the first qualifier in Mirpur

Dhaka Dynamites, banking on pure power hitting and a sensational trio of spin bowlers, reached the 2017 BPL final with a 95-run win over Comilla Victorians in the first qualifier in Mirpur.Evin Lewis gave them the perfect start with the bat, top scoring with 47 before Kieron Pollard and Shahid Afridi powered them to 191 for 7 in 20 overs. Comilla’s bowlers suffered greatly, except for Hasan Ali who took 3 for 16.Comilla’s hopes of chasing their target were extinguished quickly – they were six down inside 10 overs – and were eventually bowled out for 96. Afridi, Shakib Al Hasan and Sunil Narine presented combined figures of 10-2-44-6.Dhaka now await the winner of Sunday’s second qualifier between Comilla and Rangpur Riders.Lewis revs Dhaka up earlyLewis, who survived a close leg-before shout in the first over, started off with three fours in the third over. Lewis hit Mahedi Hasan for two sixes in the sixth over, and a third off Shoaib Malik, all over long off. With Lewis off to a flyer, Dhaka were quicker to get off the blocks in the qualifier.Malik, however, had the last laugh, dismissing Lewis in the ninth over. Lewis had struck six fours and three sixes in his 32-ball effort before he was bowled. Joe Denly and Lewis added 69 runs for the second wicket, thereby building a perfect base for the oncoming big-hitters.Sixes galore from Afridi, PollardWhile Denly manned one end, Pollard and Afridi ripped into the Comilla bowlers from the other. Pollard struck three sixes – straight, over cover and over square leg – in his 18-ball 31. Afridi hacked four sixes in his 19-ball 30, hitting two slog sweeps, a pull and a swipe over long off.Dhaka spinners break Comilla’s backLiton Das drove back to Mosaddek Hossain in the first over of Comilla’s chase to start poorly. Shakib then bowled Jos Buttler for 5 after the Englishman missed a cut after backing away too much. Imrul Kayes was Mosaddek’s second wicket when the ball stayed low to go beneath his bat. And soon after, Abu Hider had Marlon Samuels caught behind and Comilla slipped far too quickly inside the Powerplay.Afridi’s double-wicket maidenIn the 10th over, Afridi struck twice: he dismissed Tamim Iqbal and Dwayne Bravo to reduce Comilla to 55 for 6. They had lost three wickets in a space of ten balls without adding a single run. Tamim made 31 off 28 balls, and was stumped trying to add a second six to his name. Off the over’s fifth ball, Bravo was adjudged lbw for a duck, trapped right in front of middle stump.Comilla surrender meeklyWickets came thick and fast for Dhaka towards the end. Mohammad Saifuddin was run out, caught short of the crease when he tried for a second run with Malik, who himself fell in the 13th over. Narine took a second wicket before Afridi added his third, as Comilla’s surrender was complete with the team all for their lowest BPL score ever.
Hayley Matthews, Afy Fletcher and Stafanie Taylor led the charge for West Indies as Sri Lanka collapsed from 63 for 1 to 136 all out
ESPNcricinfo staff12-Oct-2017WICB Media
The spin combination of Hayley Matthews, Afy Fletcher and Stafanie Taylor worked through Sri Lanka’s batting order to set up a six-wicket victory for West Indies in the first match between the two – which counts for points in the ICC Women’s Championship – in Tarouba. Sri Lanka’s batting floundered against the three, who picked three apiece, as they collapsed from 63 for 1 to 136 all out.Sri Lanka lost their first wicket in the 12th over after opener Nipuni Hansika was struck on the pads by legspinner Fletcher. Yasoda Mendis and Chamari Atapattu set up a 41-run second-wicket partnership, with the latter becoming the first Sri Lanka batswoman to score 2000 runs in ODI. Matthews’ charge, however, removed both the batsmen before they could build on their starts. She also dismissed the No. 5 Prasadani Weerakkody for 8.Taylor and Fletcher scythed through the rest of the order as Sri Lanka fell away quickly.West Indies were off to a shaky start as they lost Kycia Knight and Taylor inside the first five overs. With 49 for 2 on the scoreboard, Matthews retired hurt on 22 and had to be stretchered off after the third ball of the 20th over. Having pulled the ball to short square leg, she dropped on her knees, clutching her right thigh. Earlier, following the third ball of the 14th over, she had received medical assistance for what seemed to be slight unease with her left hamstring. However, later she confirmed to ESPNcricinfo: “It was just bad cramp, but I’m all good”.After Matthews departed, Chedean Nation and Deandra Dottin kept the chase ticking along before slow left-armer Inoka Ranaweera removed both of them and reached the 50th-wicket milestone in ODIs. However, Merissa Aguilleira (32 of 48 balls) and Kyshona Knight (21 off 36 balls) finished the job over the next ten overs.Matthews was named the Player of the Match for her spell of 10-2-18-3.
Nottingham Forest are reportedly plotting an audacious swoop for Bayer Leverkusen ace Piero Hincapie, as Steve Cooper aims to add star quality to his side.
Forest left it to the penultimate game week of the 2022/23 campaign to confirm their safety in the Premier League, however, the Welshman must make sufficient reinforcements this summer to continue the Reds’ stay in the top-tier.
Could Nottingham Forest sign Piero Hincapie?
According to Bolavip, there are three clubs from the Premier League interested in Hincapie, with Forest named as a potential suitor alongside Tottenham and Newcastle.
The report states that the Bundesliga outfit would want a fee in the region of €40m (£34m) for the centre-back, who signed a new deal in February to extend his stay to 2027.
How good is Piero Hincapie?
Having been tipped to become “one of the world's best” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, the 21-year-old titan has gained the attention of the Premier League for his level of performance in the Bundesliga.
Signed by Leverkusen in 2021 from Argentinian side Club Atletico Talleres, the Ecuadorian defender has made a name for himself in Europe with rapid development.
Playing on the left side of a back three under Xabi Alonso has revealed the versatility of the youngster's game; also seeing him hailed as an “absolute beast” by Mango last year.
Such praise is supported by the numbers obtained by the defender over the past year, seeing him rank in the top 3% in Europe’s top five leagues in terms of his rate of progressive carries, averaging an impressive 1.85 per 90, via FBref.
The ball-carrying expertise of the 21-year-old warrior is balanced by him also ranking among the top 10% of centre-backs in Europe for his tackling, recording an average of 2.32 tackles per 90 over the past year.
A versatile defensive presence is integral for Cooper to add to his side ahead of next season, with Hincapie suggesting that he could be the ideal successor to current Forest dominator Felipe.
piero-hincapie
Once hailed as “sensational” by BBC pundit Stephen Kelly, the former Atletico Madrid star has become a hero during his short time at the City Ground but will see his contract expire next summer, when he'll be 35 years of age.
It’s essential that Cooper recruits a long-term figure as reliable at the back as Felipe, who averaged a monstrous 2.67 tackles and 2.28 interceptions per 90 since his arrival in the Premier League, via FBref.
The rumoured Forest target could be the perfect man to take the throne from the Brazilian colossus, with him being a trusted source in central defence for Leverkusen just as the 34-year-old has been in England.
Across 30 Bundesliga appearances, the 21-year-old gem averaged 1.87 tackles and 1.14 interceptions per 90, as well as challenging 1.39 dribblers per 90 and contributing to five clean sheets.
The youthful spark of the in-demand defender could benefit Cooper’s side in a host of ways, providing them with a new outlook in progressive play with his impeccable ball-carrying attributes on board.
At £34m, the South American sensation will be an ambitious, yet testing, acquisition for Forest to grasp, however, the calibre of the 6-foot centre-back could be the difference between the Reds remaining or bidding farewell to the Premier League come the end of next season.

The Somerset tail saved their side from defeat in a last-session thriller at the Ageas Bowl as Hampshire ran out of time two wickets shy of victory in their Specsavers County Championship match. The Division One strugglers had collapsed to 79 for 6, despite Steven Davies’ scoring 47 of those runs in a valiant attempt at a chase, but were bailed out by Tim Groenewald, Lewis Gregory and Craig Overton as they held on over the course of the final hour.Hampshire had declared on 95 for 5 during a rain break to set up the thrilling, topsy-turvy finale, as they set Somerset 131 to win in 31 overs. And captain George Bailey’s decision appeared to be impeccably judged as Gareth Berg took two wickets in an over. The fast bowler was helped by a stunning diving catch by James Vince in the covers to get rid of Marcus Trescothick. Three balls later, he kissed the edge of Adam Hose’s bat to offer a caught behind for Lewis McManus. The new pink ball appeared difficult to play as it swung and seamed, with play-and-misses a regular sight. James Hildreth was the next to depart as Kyle Abbott finally got his first wicket of the match with a well-directed full delivery.Steven Davies had been elevated up the order to open in the hope of quick runs and he provided with 47 from 40 balls. But wickets continued to fall around him as Eddie Byrom stuck around for a 28-ball 15 before Ian Holland bowled him for his fifth wicket of the match.Tom Abell followed in the next over as he attempted to play a reverse sweep, but only looped up a catch to Rilee Rossouw at first slip. Davies then played one shot too many to drive Holland on the up to Bailey in the covers.Groenewald and Gregory blocked out 7.5 overs before the latter was lbw to Berg leaving an in-ducker. Then Groenewald edged Abbott behind with seven balls to go but Overton and Josh Davey survived with the nerves jangling. The draw leaves Hampshire level on points with Yorkshire, but above them in third due to their win at Headingley earlier in the season, while Somerset remain second from bottom and in deep relegation trouble.Earlier, the afternoon session had progressed the game nicely with the remaining Somerset wickets of Davey and Jack Leach falling in 37 balls.Hampshire, who boasted a 64-run first innings lead, then proceeded to lose two quick wickets of their own, openers Jimmy Adams and Liam Dawson falling before the tea interval – the former run out from point, with the England international clean bowled by Groenewald.Vince and Rossouw put on 33 in quick time, with the pair finding the boundary more comfortably than anyone else in the match. But Gregory had the South African edging to first slip Hildreth, who spectacularly caught low to his right. Then Vince, caught behind cutting, and Bailey, foolishly run out in a mix up with Sean Ervine, fell in consecutive balls. As the rain fell, Hampshire elected to declare for the second time in the match but they could not force a positive result with the game eventually ending at 9.35pm.
Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon capped off a long season with a winner’s medal at the U21 European Championship on Saturday.
The Toon winger helped his country to win the tournament as they beat Spain U21s 1-0 in the final in Georgia, with Liverpool’s Curtis Jones scoring the only goal of the match.
Eddie Howe will surely have been paying attention to his attacker’s performances across the competition but other players may have caught his eye in the process.
The Magpies were linked with interest in Manchester City central defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis earlier this summer and the U21 captain was a rock at the back throughout the Euros.
He started five of their six matches, only missing out on their last group-stage clash with Germany, as England managed to end the tournament without conceding a single goal.
PIF must now free up the funds to allow Dan Ashworth and Howe to sign the 21-year-old as he could be the dream heir to Fabian Schar at St. James’ Park in the years to come.
How good is Taylor Harwood-Bellis?
The 21-year-old's performances for club and country over the last nine months suggest that the colossal defender, who is reportedly valued at £15m by City, has the potential to be an excellent player for the Magpies.
He averaged a phenomenal Sofascore rating of 7.26 at the U21 Euros and won an impressive 86% of his ground duels, while also boasting a 90% pass accuracy.
His form for England came off the back of an exceptional season with Burnley in the Championship where the 6 foot 2 ace averaged an impressive Sofascore rating of 7.21 over 32 league appearances for the Clarets and came out on top in 65% of his battles on the ground.
Harwood-Bellis, who his former manager Tony Mowbray claimed has a "warrior mentality", is yet to make his Premier League debut, which means that it remains to be seen whether or not he will be able to translate his form for Burnley and England in the top-flight.
Burnley loanee Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
However, the potential is clearly there for an exciting youngster who could be the dream heir to 31-year-old Fabian Schar if he can make the step up.
The Switzerland international averaged a Premier League Sofascore rating of 7.13, which placed him fourth in the squad, and won 62% of his individual ground duels last season.
This indicates that the defensive titan could be an upgrade on the current Toon star if he can replicate his Championship form at the top level.
Schar also ranks above the average for players in his position in the Men's Big Five Leagues and European competitions for progressive passes and progressive carries per 90 over the last 365 days, although he does not crack the top 25% in either statistic.
To put that into context, Harwood-Bellis is among the top 25% of centre-backs across the Men's Next Eight Competitions during the same period for both, while he sits in the top 4% for progressive passes per 90.
This suggests that the towering Englishman is capable of producing consistently excellent and dominant performances at the back while being superb at progressing play through his ability on the ball.
Therefore, the Manchester City prospect would be the perfect player to replace Schar as he has the potential to be a fantastic long-term signing for Newcastle.
Following the drawn Test in Ranchi, Virat Kohli has hailed Cheteshwar Pujara and Wriddhiman Saha for overcoming a difficult situation and taking India to a position from where they could have won the match. When Saha joined Pujara in the post-tea session on day three, India were 328 for 6 in reply to Australia’s 451. They went on to add 199, and India eventually declared with a 152-run first-innings lead.Australia were four down and still trailing by 89 runs at one stage on the fifth day, with more than two sessions of play still left, but India couldn’t quite push on and win, with Peter Handscomb and Shaun Marsh batting out 62 overs while adding 124 for the fifth wicket. Kohli said he wasn’t surprised Australia, the world’s second-ranked Test side, fought the way they did.”Everyone has to take responsibility equally on the field and our players want to do that,” Kohli said in his post-match press conference. “Conditions were such in the first innings that it wasn’t easy for the bowlers, the pitch was very good. It played very well in the first two innings. In the second innings, [Australia] batted well so it ended in a draw.”But where we were in the first innings, 450 [451] was the [Australian] score and we were 320-odd for 6. From there to make 600 was a very difficult task. We put ourselves in a position to win, so we feel it was a very good effort from us to get into a winning situation.”But then again, if you are playing against the No. 2 side, you will expect that they will come out and fight, not just roll over. Everyone has his point of view. We will look at our positives and we are happy with where we brought the game to after just one innings. We didn’t need to bat in the second innings. But they had to play for a draw. Like I said, they will look at their positives, we will look at our positives and move forward. There is still one match to go, both [teams] will give it their best.”Kohli said the bowlers had struggled to extract help from the pitch when the ball grew older and softer, but did not want to stress the point and take credit away from Handscomb and Marsh.”They batted very well,” Kohli said. “Four down by lunch, and after that they didn’t lose a wicket in the entire session. So credit to them, when someone plays well, you have to give them credit, we understand that.”But we are also very happy with our efforts. [Ravindra] Jadeja’s bowling was outstanding in this match. All the bowlers bowled very well but Jadeja in my opinion was standout. If you look at his economy, on this pitch it was high-class bowling and showed why he is the joint No. 1 bowler [in the ICC rankings for Test bowlers] alongside Ashwin.”Kohli: ‘Saha is one guy who is always willing to do anything for the team’•Associated Press
Pujara won the Player-of-the-Match award for his innings of 202 off 525 balls, which was the longest ever by an Indian batsman (in Tests with ball data available). That knock took Pujara’s tally for 2016-17 to 1259 runs at an average of 66.26.”You know, sometimes I really feel bad for him,” Kohli said, when asked about Pujara’s contributions through the season. “People don’t understand his importance so much in this team and what a valuable player he is for us. He is the most composed player we have in the team, he is willing to grind for his runs, he doesn’t mind batting under pressure, he likes to take a challenge of batting.”So someone like that is priceless to have in the team. When the pressure situation comes up, he is someone who will put his hand up and play long for the team and hold up one end, which I think is a great quality in him. This season he has been outstanding. I don’t know the number of runs he has scored but he has contributed throughout. He has not been spoken about much or has been in the focus too much but he deserves much more than that. People need to stand up and take notice of what he has done this season, he has been outstanding with the bat and hopefully he will continue that in the last Test.”Saha, Kohli said, was similarly underappreciated. “See, Saha’s knock again was brilliant for us. He’s always stood up when the team needs him and this game was no different. His partnership with Pujara was the reason we had a go at winning this Test. A lot of credit goes to him also.”Again, [he has] not been mentioned too much but he deserves a lot of credit. He’s one guy who is always willing to do anything for the team. Wherever we ask him to bat, he bats. He has no problems in batting after [R] Ashwin, before Ashwin, whenever we want him to do it. He plays any kind of role – positive, defensive, you know, whatever we ask him to do, he never says no.”So you really really feel glad for a guy like that. He’s willing to do anything for the team and put his best foot forward. As I said, I’m really happy he performed in a big pressure match, in a difficult situation and put us in a position to have a shot at winning the game.”Mohammed Shami, who has not played for India since suffering a leg injury during the Test series against England, is making a phased return to action. He bowled in the nets in the lead-up to both the Bengaluru and Ranchi Tests, but has not been named in India’s Test squad yet. He has also played 50-over games for Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and on Monday took four wickets in the tournament final against Tamil Nadu. Kohli said he hadn’t spoken to the selectors yet about Shami’s availability for the fourth Test in Dharamsala, but hinted that it could happen.”Yeah, Shami also we sent him to play [the Vijay Hazare Trophy] because we saw him bowling 10-12 overs in a go, and we wanted to give him some match practice.” Kohli said. “I don’t know [about his selection], I haven’t spoken to the selectors still. All kinds of possibilities approaching the next Test.”
