Justin Langer hints that Joe Burns will retain opening spot ahead of Will Pucovski

Justin Langer has given the strongest indication yet that Joe Burns will retain his place at the top of Australia’s batting order for the first Test against India with the final decision being made after the first of the Australia A matches next month. Both Burns and Will Pucovski, who has made two double-hundreds in three Sheffield Shield innings this season compared to Burns’ 57 runs in five knocks, are in the Australia A squad to face the Indians at the Drummoyne Oval and then the SCG under lights. However, Langer said that the man chosen to partner David Warner in the day-night Test would mostly likely link up with the Test squad in Adelaide when they start their preparations, which will overlap with the second Australia A fixture – a floodlit match starting on December 11.Though Burns has struggled at the start of the season for Queensland, Langer referenced the strong pairing he has with Warner – which averages over 50 for the first wicket – and the fact it was part of Australia’s clean sweep of the 2019-20 season against New Zealand and Pakistan when they went to No. 1 in the world, although the pressure from Pucovski is significant.”[Will’s] been amazing hasn’t he, and it’s exactly what we are looking for, I’ve said it for a very long time that we want guys who are outside of the team to bang so hard you can’t ignore them,” Langer said. “The fact is he’s been so good we can’t ignore him, he’s been brilliant.”That said I’ve also been consistent with the messaging that last summer we loved the combination of Joe Burns and David Warner, they have a real synergy, so at this point I’d say that will remain the same. But what Will’s doing, what Cameron Green has done, is making a real statement through sheer weight of runs and that’s always been a strong foundation for the strength of Australian cricket.”Will Pucovski pulls through square leg•Getty Images

Burns and Pucovski will likely open together in a three-day game starting on December 6, but Langer was reluctant to term it a showdown. “I wouldn’t say it’s a bat-off. Joe Burns has done really well for us. Will Pucovski, we are really looking forward to seeing how he steps up to Australia A. It will be great to see him play against India, a new step up for him, so it’s an exciting time. Competition is healthy.”When guys have done a really good job for us – like in this case that Joe and Davey did for us last summer – there’s a reason we’re ranked the No.1 Team in Test cricket. Those sorts of partnerships are really important, so we should never underestimate that.”Will Pucovski is doing everything humanly possible to play the first Test. But that’s what we have to weigh up. We should never underestimate the job the guys have done to get us to where we are. We went through a period when there were lots of ins and outs, and in my view we should back the guys in there. That can change, but it’s a pretty strong philosophy to stick to.”The decision between Burns and Pucovski is the only major debate for the selectors among the final XI for the start of the series. The much-talked-about allrounder Green is in the squad – with Langer saying his batting alone puts him in contention – and he has recently resumed bowling for Western Australia, but the theme of caution continued to be urged.”We know he’s got enormous talent, but he’s had two stress fractures,” Langer said. “The way we manage Cameron Green, as Western Australia are at the moment, will be a combined effort. We have to show the due respect that’s required and we have to patient. We’ve learned that over and over again.Langer added that up to 15 of the Test squad will probably come together in Adelaide for their preparations ahead of the first Test with potentially two batsmen remaining with the A squad for the pink-ball warm-up. All the bowlers, including Mitchell Swepson, will be in the Test camp which means he along with Michael Neser, Sean Abbott and James Pattinson would not play the second Australia A game at the SCG.Although the squads for this series will continue to operate with various biosecure protocols, the easing of some state borders has allowed a little more flexibility in where players can be.

Conseguimos criar as chances e fazer quatro gols.

+ATUAÇÕES: Everton Ribeiro, Vitinho e Michael comandam goleada louca

No futebol ninguém desaprende.

Gretar Steinsson pushing to sign £4,000-p/w player for Leeds in cheap deal

Leeds United have been urged to complete a bargain buy this summer as they look to rebuild after missing out on promotion to the Premier League.

Concern in the Championship for Leeds

A 1-0 defeat to Southampton in the Championship play-off final consigned Daniel Farke's Leeds side to another season in the second tier, and is likely to have incited a fire sale at Elland Road.

Crysencio Summerville heads the exit queue amid Premier League interest, while the likes of Wilfried Gnonto, Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter may not be too far behind as the Yorkshire side look to raise around £100m in player sales to balance their books before they can spend.

With money expected to be tight this summer, free transfers and loan moves will be even more important than usual, and Leeds have already been linked with a temporary move for Chelsea defender Alfie Gilchrist. Now, they are on the hunt for a bargain.

Steinsson personally eyeing Leeds move for Jebbison

It has been claimed that Leeds technical director Gretar Steinsson is a big fan of a move for Daniel Jebbison this summer, with the Sheffield United youngster out of contract as it stands and set to become a free agent on July 1st.

Becoming the youngest-ever player to score on his Premier League debut back in 2021, the forward has endured a tough time since and missed much of this season with a blood clot. But he remains very highly rated.

Speaking on X, teammate Oliver Norwood tipped Jebbison for big things back in 2023, explaining that the 20-year-old "will play at the top level & hopefully with us" when asked who fans should be most excited about from the Blades' academy.

And reporter Graeme Bailey has now revealed that Steinsson is personally a fan of the type of deal that Jebbison would represent.

“He is the sort of player Gretar Steinsson wants", Bailey explained. "Young, physical, something different to what they have in the squad, obviously youth. It would be a good deal, he is only young.

“There would be compensation to play but it wouldn’t be very expensive in terms of actual market value. It represents a good deal on all fronts really if they can get it over the line. It would be a decent coup because there is a lot of interest in him.”

It comes as HITC report that Jebbison is unlikely to remain at Bramall Lane after his £4,000 per week contract expires this summer, with the 20-year-old set to move on and Leeds pushing to secure him as a "priority" target.

Though Sheffield United have offered him a new deal, there is interest both in England and across Europe, meaning that a move away from the relegated side seems likely ahead of the new campaign.

Jebbison's potential arrival could spell bad news for veteran striker Patrick Bamford, who has been tipped to leave Leeds this summer as part of a rejuvenation of the squad.

Americans Abroad: Christian Pulisic shows sensational skills, but Weston McKennie benched (again)

With a new coach in place, GOAL analyzes the biggest developments for the biggest USMNT players in European leagues

It was a busy week for Mauricio Pochettino and, right now, American soccer's eyes are squarely focused on the U.S. men's national team's new head coach. There are just many reasons to be excited, and just as many mysteries. He hasn't coached a game yet, and, until he does, everyone will be wondering what he thinks of it all.

Pochettino will have plenty of studying to do over the next few weeks but, over this weekend, he got his first real glimpse at USMNT stars with their clubs as this new era begins.

That will be good news for several players, who stepped up with the types of performances that will excite the new USMNT boss. Others, though, were underwhelming. There are still a few weeks to impress the coach before the U.S. convenes for Pochettino's first camp, but there's nothing more important than a first impression, is there?

That process has started. Which players made their mark, and which will need to step up in the weeks to come? GOAL takes a look at the weekend that was for Americans Abroad.

    The prolific Pulisic

This isn't hyperbole. This isn't exaggeration or bias. It's statistically true. For the last year or so, Christian Pulisic has been one of the most prolific attackers in the world.

On Saturday, Pulisic scored one and assisted one in a 4-0 win over Venezia, continuing his hot start to the season. He already has two goals and two assists in four Serie A matches. The campaign is just beginning, but Pulisic has wasted no time in getting going.

This isn't just a hot start, though; it's been a hot year. Since the beginning of last season, Pulisic is one of only 12 players with double-digit goals and assists in a top-five European league. There's only one other in Serie A: teammate Rafael Leao. Pulisic has been sensational, doing everything Milan could have possibly dreamed of when they signed him from Chelsea.

Another compelling stat: with his goal on Saturday, Pulisic is now 10-for-10 on penalty kicks for club and country. He's reliable as can be, whether that's from open play or from the spot.

Pulisic is one of very few USMNT players really playing at an elite level in a top, top league. Antonee Robinson may be the only other one. If only the rest of his USMNT teammates could play to this level.

    What's up with Weston?

Pochettino is now in charge, and he'll be keeping a close eye on what everyone's doing on the club level. Right now, that isn't great news for Weston McKennie.

McKennie was left on the bench once again this past weekend as he failed to appear in Juventus' 0-0 draw with Empoli. There was some good news in the form of Tim Weah's return, but the real story, at least from a USMNT perspective, is McKennie.

The midfielder has played at total of just 23 minutes since the start of the season. Despite re-signing with the club, McKennie has barely earned a glance from Thiago Motta, who seemingly doesn't know what to do with him.

Under Gregg Berhalter, that may not have concerned McKennie much. He'd proven himself under the previous USMNT boss. The resume was built and the performances were there. Berhalter would bet on McKennie to figure it out.

Will Pochettino make a similar bet? We'll find out but, right now, McKennie might just be on shaky ground with the USMNT as the new boss comes in.

  • Getty Images Sport

    Luca Koleosho watch continues

OK, so he isn't a USMNT player just yet, and, to be fair, he may never be, but American fans can dream, right?

That aspiration will only become more intense after Luca Koleosho's stunning goal for Burnley over the weekend, one that shows exactly why several countries are chasing him. The run, the composure, the finish – Koleosho flexed it all with that finish in the 1-0 win over Leeds.

As things stand, it seems the USMNT is losing the race for Koleosho's international allegiance. The Connecticut-born star most recently played for Italy's U21s, and it seems the Azzurri have the inside track at the moment. The USMNT isn't even the only other team chasing him, as the 20-year-old winger is also eligible to play for Canada and Nigeria, too.

All four countries are on high alert, but the USMNT does have a new wrinkle that could change things. Don't underestimate the power of Pochettino, who is clearly has the stature of a coach that could influence this type of player chase.

For now, though, Koleosho will keep chugging along with Burnley and, if he keeps scoring goals like this, the interest will only intensify.

    Sargent is back?

It really was disappointing to see Josh Sargent miss out on minutes during this international break. He's earned them, to put it lightly. Sargent has dominated the Championship but has been unable to bring that form to the USMNT.

That's because of injury issues. An ankle ailment kept him out against New Zealand. Sargent, though, was healthy enough to start for Norwich this weekend.

Sargent's start is obviously good news. It's encouraging that his ankle injury wasn't serious. It's great to see him playing a key role for a club with legitimate Premier League ambitions. Sargent is one of the few players in the USMNT who is legitimately key to how his team plays. Any time he shows that, it's a real positive.

Still, Sargent's start only reinforces how unlucky he's been with the USMNT. He's played less than 30 minutes since the World Cup, which is nowhere near enough for a player at his ability level. Hopefully, he'll be back in the mix in October, but seeing him out there this weekend only reinforced how much of a missed opportunity this September window was for him.

Sky Sports reporter: Liverpool enter race to beat Man Utd to sign £50m+ ace

Liverpool are looking to beat Manchester United to a summer transfer signing that could cost them more than £50m.

Liverpool transfer rumours

The 2024 summer transfer window is expected to be a crucial one for Liverpool and new manager Arne Slot. The Dutchman will no doubt be keen to put his own stamp on a squad that has been moulded over nine years by Jurgen Klopp.

Slot will have to make some big decisions on the outings front, with Darwin Nunez's future reportedly up in the air. But it is the incomings that will likely prove key to the Reds' success in the forthcoming season as they look to push for the Premier League title once again after faltering late on last term.

Liverpool are hoping to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko this summer, who has been valued at £43m by the Dutch Eredivisie champions. The Reds are also thought to be leading the race for Atalanta's Teun Koopmeiners, with Chelsea and Juventus also in the mix for the Dutchman, who has been valued at €60m (£52m) by the recently crowned Europa League champions.

The Reds could finally get their man…

ByTom Cunningham May 24, 2024

Elsewhere, Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a move for Brajan Gruda, who could cost as much as €20m (£17m) to lure away from Mainz 05 this summer, while a few names from Arne Slot's past could find their way to England in the near future. Former Feyenoord captain Orkun Kokcu and current Feyenoord shot-stopper Justin Bijlow have both been tipped to make the move to Anfield.

Liverpool enter race to beat Man Utd to sign £50m+ ace

Now, as per journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Liverpool have joined Real Madrid and Manchester United in the race for Lille centre-back Leny Yoro.

It has previously been reported that the youngster will depart Lille this summer despite their qualification for European football, and could cost anywhere between £50-85m, even though the stopper is about to enter the final 12 months of his current contract.

Man Utd transfer target Leny Yoro in Ligue 1 action for Lille.

Despite only being 18 years of age, Yoro has already racked up 60 appearances for Lille's senior side, including 44 in 2023/24. His ability to shine at a top level at such a young age has earned the Frenchman comparisons to the likes of William Saliba.

"At Marseille, I knew Boubacar Kamara, at Saint-Etienne, William Saliba and Wesley Fofana, and now there's Leny Yoro," said Lille teammate Remy Cabella. "He has all the qualities and potential to do something huge. He's very humble, and that's another of his strengths."

Moreover, manager Paulo Fonseca has also praised the defender, with his comments suggesting that he has a mentality that belies his tender years.

He said: "To me, the players don’t have age, they have quality. Because here we don’t have the possibility to buy very expensive players, we find a way to make the young players grow.

"I believe Leny [Yoro] in the next year will be at one of the best clubs in Europe. He started here at 16 with us. He is very ambitious, but very disciplined. He grew a lot but he is a kid with a big maturity, with big quality.

"I have no doubt in modern football he will be one of the best central defenders in the world."

No outfield player featured for more minutes than Yoro in last season's Ligue 1 campaign, highlighting the trust that the manager has in his player. Therefore, perhaps this is why the price tag is so high despite Yoro's contract situation.

Boost confirmed as "fantastic" Wolves star returns to squad vs Forest

Come the end of the season, it will be hard to argue against Gary O'Neil's nomination for Manager of the Year should it deservedly come his way. The former Bournemouth boss has taken Wolverhampton Wanderers from relegation contenders to the comforts of mid-table and he may not be done there, with one star's return set to provide his side with a major boost in the unlikely quest for European football.

Wolves injury news

Whilst the headlines have been focused on Newcastle United's mounting injury list, Wolves have quietly been enduring struggles of their own on that front, resulting in a poor run of form. O'Neil cut a frustrated figure after his side's loss against Aston Villa a couple of weeks ago, admitting that without injuries, the 2-0 defeat could have ended differently.

Ranking Wolves' best managers by win percentage

Where does Vitor Pereira rank among the best to work in the Wolves dugout?

ByJack Salveson Holmes Apr 15, 2024

O'Neil told the official Wolves website: “We were ahead on loads of things, more shots, more possession, higher xG away to Aston Villa with the attacking players we have missing, it makes a huge difference today.

.

“Let’s not do any disservice to the ones who played because they gave everything and had some good moments. But when you have Pedro Neto, Cunha, Bellegarde and Channy [Hwang] to some of those moments with the xG we had, I’m sure we’d have converted higher.”

Now, he is finally set to see some of his frustrations come to an end. As revealed by O'Neil via Liam Keen, Hwang Hee-chan is set to be back in the Wolves squad for today's game against Nottingham Forest. The striker will be hoping to pick up where he left off before his injury and instantly get back in the goals.

The South Korean missed the last five games for Wolves, in which they endured a run of just one win, three defeats and two draws to highlight just how important he is to O'Neil's side. His return comes at the worst time for Nottingham Forest, however, given their current fight for survival.

"Fantastic" Hwang the key for Wolves

Even if Hwang does not start from the off, the fact that Wolves have such a player to introduce from the bench hands them a major boost. With 11 goals to his name in 24 appearances for Wolves this season, there are not many outside of the Premier League's top six who have been as clinical as the forward has been in the current campaign.

Now, with seven games to go, he has the chance to take Wolves into the top-half and take his own goals tally ever closer to the very best players that English football has to offer. Having already outscored the likes of Diogo Jota, Julian Alvarez and Rasmus Hojlund so far this season, Hwang will look to make his mark once more against Forest.

Ratcliffe could sack Ten Hag & hire Man Utd a “tactical genius”

Since the Sir Alex Ferguson era, every manager of Manchester United has failed to return the club to its glory days.

Unfortunately, it seems that Erik ten Hag will be the next boss to face the sack, having coached the Red Devils to a current seventh-place position in the Premier League with a goal difference of -1.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag watches on.

Although it’s been reported that the Dutchman won’t part ways with the club until the end of the season, Sir Jim Ratcliffe will likely start his rebuild with a new boss at the helm.

But who are the options? Well, one is particularly eye-catching having proven himself to be a serial winner.

Ratcliffe has drawn up a manager list for Man United

According to a claim from Ben Jacobs via GiveMeSport, Zinedine Zidane could feature on Man Utd's manager list this summer.

Jacobs said: "Zinedine Zidane will almost certainly be on the succession planning list. Being on the succession planning list doesn't necessarily mean you'll get any contact or get offered the job. It just means that you're part of a collection of names that are there to explore. Then, if a change is made, that list will be whittled down.”

This was confirmed following a report from French outlet L’Equipe via GiveMeSport, who mentioned that the former Real Madrid boss would favour a move to Old Trafford over Bayern Munich.

Zidane is reportedly keeping an eye on the current situation at the Red Devils, as well as the circumstances at Bayern.

Zidane’s managerial career so far

Being widely regarded as one of the best players of all time is such a prestigious honour in itself, but to also go on to become an elite manager is a feat very few achieve.

Zidane started his career in the coaching department as an assistant manager for Real Madrid back in 2013, but just a year later, he took on the role as Real Madrid Castilla boss.

zinedine-zidane-manager-tottenham-hotspur

However, it wasn’t until January 2016 that he really developed as a coach, becoming the boss of Madrid and boasting one of the most impressive records around.

Over 149 matches, Zidane’s Madrid won an unbelievable 105 matches, losing just 16 times, while also winning three consecutive Champions League titles from 2015/16 to 2017/18, which proves he’s a master of the competition.

The 51-year-old is the true definition of a winner, which is exactly the type of manager missing at United right now.

A reason why the Frenchman may be preferred over other managers' is simply due to the fact that his preferred system and formation is a 4-3-3, which fits the current United squad like a glove.

zinedine-zidane-champions-league-tottenham-hotspur

The most important aspect to the success of Los Blancos under Zidane was the midfield trio of Casemiro, Luka Modric, and Toni Kroos, and a midfield trio of Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes, and a new defensive midfielder could replicate that, due to the two ball-playing eights and a destroyer behind them.

However, on top of being “tactical genius,” as called by pundit Steve McManaman, Zidane is also a brilliant man-manager who knows how to get the best out of every individual on the field, which is an aspect Ten Hag has struggled with in particular this season, with the Jadon Sancho situation rather epitomising that.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

Furthermore, the mentality of not accepting anything below the supposed standard of Man United has slipped away under Ten Hag, and the hiring of Zidane would certainly put an end to that. He knows exactly what it means to be the boss at a top European club.

Despite the fact that the three-time Champions League-winning coach has been out of action since 2021, he would instantly improve the Red Devils if he were to join, at least ensuring that the foundations for success are laid out, which they currently aren’t under the Dutch boss, as shown displayed against Coventry City on Sunday.
