Craig White steps down as Hampshire coach

Craig White, the former England allrounder, has left his position as Hampshire’s head coach after six years at the club. White’s decision was prompted by a desire to spend more time with his family. The 48-year-old has been in the role of head coach for the last two seasons, having taken over after Dale Benkenstein’s departure in 2016, and saw Hampshire lift the Royal London Cup this year. He previously worked as assistant coach and bowling specialist, having joined in 2012.”I’ve had a fantastic six years at Hampshire and I’m proud of what we’ve been able to achieve as a group in that time,” White said. “Whilst it’s certainly been a tough decision and one that hasn’t been made lightly, spending long periods of time away from my family has become more and more difficult and I feel that now is the right time to return to be with them on a more permanent basis.”I’d like to thank everyone at the club for their support throughout the last six years, from the players to the coaching staff, members and supporters, and I wish them the very best for the future.”White, who played in 30 Tests and 51 ODIs for England, previously coached at Yorkshire, the club where he spent his entire playing career before retirement in 2008.Hampshire’s director of cricket, Giles White, said: “Craig has been an integral part of the club since joining us in 2012, firstly as an Assistant Coach and then as Head Coach, and his dedication in that time has been outstanding.”We understand his decision to step down and have been aware of the difficulties of being away from his family. On behalf of the club I’d like to thank Craig for all the hard work and incredible contributions during his time here, he will be missed on both a personal and professional level. We wish him and his family well for the future.”

    WHAT HAPPENED?

In a rare interview, Messi gave fans an insight into a host of topics including his dramatic Barcelona exit and his World Cup win with Argentina. When the discussion moved onto the subject of retirement, the megastar was adamant that he will recognise when the time is right but remains keen to keep playing as long as he feels content.

    WHAT LIONEL MESSI SAID

"I know that the moment I feel that I am no longer ready to perform, that I no longer enjoy myself or help my teammates, I will quit," Messi told the podcast.

"I am very self-critical with myself, I know when I am good, when I am bad, when I play well and when I play badly. When I feel it's time to take that step, I will take it without thinking about age. If I feel good I will always try to continue competing because that's what I like and what I know how to do".

Despite the talk of retirement, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has yet to consider what he will do when he does hang his boots up. "I have not yet thought about what I will do when I retire, today I try to enjoy the day to day, the moments, without thinking about the future. I don't have anything clear yet, I hope to continue playing for a while longer, which is what I like.

"When the time comes, I will surely find the way to do what fulfils me and what I like and a new role. On a sporting level I was lucky to be able to achieve all my dreams and the truth is that I can't ask for more."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The mere suggestion of Messi's retirement is enough to put fans all over the world on edge. But beneath the matter-of-fact statement that one day he will know the time has come is the reassurance that at the age of 36, one of the game's greats is still enjoying himself to the point where he has yet to even consider life after playing.

    WHAT NEXT FOR LIONEL MESSI?

Major injuries are something that Messi has thankfully avoided over the course of his career but the Argentina captain has suffered a number of minor niggles since his move to Florida. Having missed his country's recent friendlies, Inter Miami will hope to have their captain back from his latest knock for their CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter-final against Monterrey on April 3.

Paul Collingwood sees Durham through the dark times

At 42 years old, Paul Collingwood knows that, sooner or later, he will have to face the inevitable and decide that a playing career in cricket that began in the last century really is over. With the end of his 24th season looming into view, that decision might not be far away. He was going to call it a day this time last year but changed his mind – for a second time. Don’t be surprised if he puts it off again. The knowledge that not being on the field will leave an aching void is still there. But this time there is more to the dilemma than whether he can live without playing the game.Durham are through to the Vitality Blast quarter-finals, in which they face Sussex at Chester-le-Street on Friday evening. After a thumping win over Glamorgan in Cardiff, they have a chance – an outside one, but a chance nonetheless – of returning to Division One in the Championship.

Stokes boost for Durham

Ben Stokes has been added to Durham’s squad to face Sussex on Friday, 24 hours after being made unavailable by England. Stokes was initially withdrawn because of a minor knee injury sustained in the third Test against India, but will now be able to play as a batsman only in the quarter-final after being re-assessed by England’s medical team.

After the bleakest period in the club’s history as a first-class county, when the need for a financial bale-out from the ECB nearly two years ago came with relegation and point deductions attached as a “deterrent” to others, there are glimmers of hope.”It feels exciting again, it’s not all doom and gloom any more and it hasn’t felt like that for quite a while,” he said. “There have been times since the sanctions were put on us that I’ve talked with Jon Lewis [Durham’s head coach] and it felt like after all the hard work that had been done we were back to square one, that we had taken the biggest hit we possibly could have.”People looked at the relegation and the points deduction and talked about it as a two-year penalty but when you factor in the players who left, top players like [Mark] Stoneman, [Scott] Borthwick and [Keaton] Jennings, it is more like five or six years because you’ve then got to bring new players through.”But we’ve got a new chief exec now in Tim Bostock who is trying to do things differently and I’ve never known a chairman with more passion than Beefy [Ian Botham].”Financial pressures also seem to have lifted slightly. Axar Patel, an Indian spin-bowling allrounder, has signed for the last six Championship games and Alex Lees, released by Yorkshire after a long run of failure, will seek faith and form in the north-east.”The great thing is we are able to recruit again,” Collingwood said. “To be able to afford to bring in players like Patel and Lees for the rest of the season in the Championship is huge for the club.”We think we’ve got a chance to do something special in Championship. There is light at the end of the tunnel now and, you know, I feel like I want to be part of it.”The improvement in Durham’s T20 form has been startling. After just three wins in 14 last season, which would have put them bottom of the North Division irrespective of the four-points deduction imposed as part of the ECB package of penalties, nine victories this season put them second to Worcestershire only on net run rate.Tom Latham, a New Zealand batsman without huge pedigree as a Twenty20 cricketer, had a strong season as captain and opening batsman and Imran Tahir contributed to several victories.”But generally we are a team without many big names,” Collingwood said. “We went on a little road trip early on in the competition where we won back-to-back games at Edgbaston and Nottingham, games which feel like beating Man U at Old Trafford in football parlance. That gave us a lot of confidence.”We have been almost workmanlike, really. We’ve developed a kind of strategy, especially at the Riverside where the playing area is so wide and big scores are harder to get, of essentially trying to outrun the opposition.”That can be quite hard for a 42-year-old but it has worked for us and hopefully it does again on Friday night.”As for the make-your-mind-up time that he knows he cannot put off for much longer, he remains open-minded.”To be fair to the club, a decision will have to be made pretty soon if there is one to be made but as yet I really don’t know,” he said. “I’ve had a bit of an Achilles problem this year but it did not stop me playing four T20s in six days the other week. I’m still enjoying playing and I still feel I have something to offer.Coaching opportunities are already offering him other alternatives.”I’ve loved every minute of my coaching work with England and we will have to see what opportunities arise but I’ve no God-given right to walk into a job with the ECB.”Honestly, we’ll just have to wait and see. I have not made a decision as yet and there has been no pressure for me to do so. Until I have to make a final decision I’m just putting every effort into winning games for Durham, starting on Friday night.”

Alex Hales' involvement in nightclub brawl comes under scrutiny in closing statements

Ben Stokes’ defence draws attention to team-mates’ actions outside Mbargo nightclub on September 25

George Dobell at Bristol Crown Court13-Aug-20181:16

‘Everything I did was in defence of myself and others’, Stokes tells jury

The jury in the Ben Stokes trial has been asked to consider the possibility that Alex Hales inflicted the most serious of the injuries outlined in the incident. The court has heard previously that Ryan Ali, who is standing trial for affray alongside Stokes, sustained a broken eye-socket in the fight in the early hours of September 25.But while Stokes accepts he threw punches at Ali and Ryan Hale, his barrister, Gordon Cole QC, used his summing-up to suggest that Stokes’ fellow England player, Hales, may have inflicted the damage with a kick. As a consequence, he asked the jury to reflect on whether it was “reasonable” to attribute all the injuries to Stokes’ fists.”You’ll see Mr Hales both stamp and, on one occasion, he appears to kick,” Cole said. “You know of injuries that were sustained.”Sustained, perhaps, by Alex Hales’s intervention? Blows, kicks or stamps to the head area. Does it follow, as a reasonable inference, that all of those injuries are properly attributed to Mr Stokes? We say, no, the evidence is ambiguous.”You’ve seen the kick that seems to be administered by Mr Hales that appears to have knocked the head of Mr Ali around. You’ve been shown the stills. He was clearly, you may think, kicked to the head.”If that is right, is it fair to attribute any injury to Mr Stokes?”Cole also sought to dismiss the suggestion that Stokes was “drunk” and “enraged” in the moments leading up to the incident as “complete nonsense”.He showed the jury footage that, he submitted, showed Stokes and Hales walking “calmly” past Ali and Hale in the street a few minutes before the fight broke out and then, frame by frame, went through the 57-second footage that appeared in The Sun suggesting that Hale was attempting to approach Stokes with hands raised in the moments prior to Stokes hitting him.Ben Stokes outside court as his trial enters its second week•PA Photos”At 31 seconds, Mr Hale is still coming towards Mr Stokes,” Cole said. “At 33 seconds he is coming at Mr Stokes on the pavement. At 34 seconds you have Mr Hale on the pavement.”41 seconds in, Mr Hale gets hold of Ben Stokes. That [next] 16 seconds doesn’t take you to the punch of Hale; it takes you to the slap of Ali. That’s 16 seconds to reflect with reason that enough is enough when you have been the victim of an attack.”Cole also suggested that Stokes had only become after involved after Ali had raised a bottle and, in the second part of the incident, when Hale had returned to the scene with a metal bar.”We say there’s absolutely no coincidence that Mr Stokes got embroiled at the start when weapons were being used and embroiled again when Mr Hale came back with the metal bar,” Cole said.”A person may use such force in the circumstances as is reasonable to defend himself. A person cannot weigh to a nicety the exact measure of their defensive action. Nobody need wait until they are hit. In a moment of unexpected anguish, Stokes has done only what he thought necessary.”Cole also quoted Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes in a 1921 case in America, in which he said “Detached reflection cannot be demanded in the presence of an uplifted knife.”Earlier Nicholas Corsellis, acting for the prosecution, suggested Stokes had “acted deplorably”.”[This incident] demonstrates Mr Stokes in a world and in a way that he is distanced from the admirable career he has had,” Corsellis said. “He acted deplorably when the red mist came down and struck with such force that one person was rendered unconscious.”If he began using self-defence, he very quickly moved on and became the aggressor. This was a pursued cause of retaliation by Stokes.”Corsellis also alleged Stokes was lying to the jury, in particular in recounting his version of events outside Mbargo nightclub and claiming he did not recall aspects of the incident.”A witness starts off with a clean slate but may not end up with one,” Corsellis said. “There are occasions when a person comes before a jury and denies, explains or seeks to justify when it is clear they are lying. Of course I’m talking about Stokes and his behaviour outside Mbargo.”There are aspects of Mr Stokes’ case where he has zero recollection: the cigarette butt, the homophobic abuse; the punch on Mr Ali. Selective memory, members of the jury. Either he can’t say, but the question is, is it ‘won’t say’ because of what the truth is?”The judge is expected to provide his summing-up on Monday afternoon and the jury will then retire to consider their verdict.

Spurs: Postecoglou has now finally replaced Pochettino’s ‘hero’ at N17

Tottenham Hotspur maintained their unbeaten start to the new Premier League campaign with a commendable 2-2 draw away to rivals Arsenal on Sunday afternoon, with Ange Postecoglou's side twice coming from behind to secure a point at the Emirates.

In years gone by, the Lilywhites may have wilted in such a high-profile contest – particularly with Cristian Romero netting an own goal and giving away a penalty – yet this new crop of talent appears to be made of sterner stuff, despite the free-flowing football that Postecoglou has been keen to introduce.

That battling nature was perhaps typified best by midfield maestro, Yves Bissouma, with the former Brighton and Hove Albion man looking back to his best after enduring an injury-hit debut campaign last time out.

Like a cliched 'new signing' this time around, the Mali international was truly immense against the Gunners, illustrating his bravery both in and out of possession after having won seven of his ten total duels on the day, while also enjoying a remarkable 95% pass accuracy rate – the highest of any player for either side.

After largely being on the periphery in 2022/23, Bissouma looks likely to be central to the north Londoners moving forward, with his return to the side seemingly one of the key differences from last season's dismal campaign.

Another alteration that has been made since Postecoglou's arrival has been at left-back, with the emergence of young Destiny Udogie – who was also impressive at the weekend – also something to savour.

How did Udogie perform against Arsenal?

It had initially looked like being a tough afternoon for the promising Italian in what was arguably his biggest test since his belated arrival at Spurs over the summer, after spending last season back on loan at Serie A side, Udinese.

Faced with one of the league's in-form wingers in Bukayo Saka – who reached double figures for both goals and assists in the top-flight last term – the 20-year-old could have been mistaken for a rabbit in the headlights initially, notably picking up an early yellow card to make life even more difficult.

The full-back also then proceeded to tee up Eddie Nketiah with an errant back pass, with Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville stating in commentary at the time that it was "all getting a bit too much" for the defender, as he was under "real pressure against Saka".

Destiny Udogie

To his credit, while many managers would have looked to the experienced figure of Ben Davies at half-time – or even sooner – Postecoglou kept faith with the Verona native, with the 58-year-old even exclaiming at full-time that he believed that Udogie was "the dominant player on that side of the pitch" in the end.

In truth, Udogie seemingly warranted an apology or praise from Neville for the manner in which he fought back after the break, ultimately finishing the match having made eight tackles as a marker of his persistence.

Such a turnaround in fortunes against Mikel Arteta's men was a 'credit to his maturity' – as per football.london's Alasdair Gold – with it having been yet another reminder of just how good young Udogie is.

How good is Destiny Udogie?

As footballJOE's Hunter Godson stated earlier this season, the 6 foot 2 starlet could get "into every team in the world already" as he is "sickeningly good", having already registered two assists in just six league outings so far this term.

The £15m addition – who contributed 15 goals and assists in 71 games for his former employers – had primarily been deployed in a wing-back berth prior to this season, yet has settled in smoothly into Postecoglou's ranks.

In truth, the Italy U21 international appears to have finally solved what has been a problem position for those at N17 in recent years, with Daniel Levy and co having arguably not replaced former "hero" Danny Rose until now – as hailed by writer Ryan Rosenblatt.

How many appearances did Danny Rose make for Spurs?

Signed from Leeds United on a £1m deal back in 2007, the diminutive defender went on to become a mainstay at White Hart Lane over the next decade or so, making himself an instant cult figure among supporters following his stunning effort on debut against the Gunners.

While the next few years would be littered with loan spells, the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino seemingly changed his fortunes, with the Doncaster-born ace forming part of a famed backline including the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Kyle Walker – as well as subsequently, Kieran Trippier.

At his pomp, the left-back was even mooted for a £50m switch to Manchester United as an indication of how highly-regarded he was in the game, having also been part of the Spurs side that reached the Champions League final under Pochettino in 2019.

Although that stellar spell came to a sour end as Rose was frozen out by Jose Mourinho – before joining Watford in 2021 – he was still able to rack up 213 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring nine goals and contributing 29 assists.

danny-rose-tottenham-hotspur-leeds-united-wise-flop-transfer

Since that acrimonious exit, there has arguably not been a nailed-on, first-choice option to replace the 33-year-old, with the full-back berths, in general, having not been taken up by two "dynamic" options "since Walker and Rose" – as per 90min's Sean Walsh.

Has Danny Rose been replaced at Tottenham?

The Lilywhites did snap up Sergio Reguilon back in the summer of 2020 in order to acquire a long-term successor to Rose – who is now without a club – yet the current Man United loanee has hardly set the world alight since then, with Spurs insider John Wenham describing him as "just not that good" last year.

Equally, one-time wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon – who had previously been likened to Gareth Bale – has also failed to nail down that starting berth due to his continued injury woes, having even been described as "a Championship player" by Wenham.

The shift to a back three or back five under Antonio Conte did see the aforementioned Davies slot in on the left flank, although the Welshman is a solid, albeit unspectacular performer at best, with pundit Gabby Agbonlahor suggesting back in May that the club should replace the 30-year-old as he is "struggling to put in top performances".

With Udogie in tow, however, a proper replacement for Rose appears to have been found, with the hope being that the youngster can also enjoy a lengthy, fruitful stint at N17, much like the Englishman before him.

Although supporters won't want to get carried away just yet, it looks as if the golden days of Pochettino could be set to return under the seemingly infallible, Postecoglou.

Tottenham: Ange calls upon "quality" barely-seen Spurs gem before Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has called up a barely-seen young player to first-team training ahead of their clash with Arsenal.

Arsenal vs Tottenham

The north Londoners are set for a very interesting battle on Sunday with both sides heading into the 90 on a fierce fun of form. Spurs and Arsenal have won four out of their opening five Premier League matches so far; remaining unbeaten while sending a real statement to the rest of this division.

Postecolgou's side, over their last four games, have reigned victorious in each of them. Wins over Bournemouth, Man United, Burnley and Sheffield United in that order have showcased both an exciting new style and the mentality of champions.

Spurs were forced to dig deep for their latest three points, with Sheffield United giving them a real scare last Saturday. Gustavo Hamer's opener was later cancelled out by two last gasp strikes from Richarlison and Dejan Kukusevski deep into added time. The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was sent into raptures and Postecoglou has said that the Spurs fan base should enjoy every second of this imperious run.

"No, no, no, let them go, let them go and enjoy it," said Postecoglou after their victory over the Blades. "My role is not to burst people's bubbles. Let them get excited, let them get ahead of themselves. That's the beauty of being a supporter.

"They go through enough pain mate, you want to let them enjoy it. If they think we're going to be world beaters then great, that's up to us to match that expectation. Our supporters deserve to have some happiness and enjoy it any way they want to."

Meanwhile, Arsenal have notched league victories over Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Man United and Everton – with their only dropped points coming in a 2-2 draw to Fulham last month. The Gunners have been forced to dig deep in a fair few of those games, especially wins against the likes of Forest, Palace and Everton.

They were all secured by narrow one-goal margins with Arteta hailing his side's quality and belief in their last domestic outing at Goodison Park.

“Six years without a win here is a long time, so we had to learn some lessons, we had to be better." said Arteta. "I am delighted for the win but especially the way we won it, the way we played, how dominant we were, the presence that we showed on the pitch. We fully deserved to win the game.

“I think we had many other openings to put the ball in the last line and to put somebody in the box and finalise. Credit to Everton, they defended the box extremely well, and they had some big, big blocks when we opened them up. It’s great to have other ways to score goals, it gives you different resources and be more unpredictable."

Latest Tottenham news

It will be interesting to see who features on Sunday, with a video from Tottenham's YouTube channel (via The Boot Room) sharing that young defender Nile John has actually been called up to senior training ahead of the encounter.

John has made just one first-team appearance for the club so far, having been on loan spells at the likes of Charlton Athletic. He has been revered for his "quality" in recent seasons by members of the media, and it will be interesting to see if the 20-year-old can do enough to earn a spot for Postecoglou over this campaign.

Aston Villa: Emery Could Have Next Mings In "Quality" Bodymoor Heath Starlet

Aston Villa have had a difficult start to the 2023/24 campaign, after enjoying a magnificent end to last season and a thrilling summer in the build-up to Unai Emery's first full year in charge.

Strong signings, and an encouraging pre-season left an inspired aura at the club in preparation for the new footballing calendar that includes Villa's first involvement in Europe since 2010, but things have taken a turn in a blink.

Less than a week before the Premier League opener, Emiliano Buendia was injured in training which has since been confirmed as an anterior cruciate ligament blow, followed closely by Tyrone Mings’ significant knee injury sustained on the opening day.

The two long-term injuries have left the Villans short of two players that would typically start in Emery’s squad, leaving the Spaniard pondering the transfer market, though he could save the club millions in the future by developing an academy starlet.

Who could replace Tyrone Mings?

Villa have been linked to defensive names such as Kieran Tierney and Marcos Acuna recently, however with both being fielded as full-backs, neither speculated target could cover the areas perfected by Mings.

The summer signing of Pau Torres added to the depth in central defence, however, no one could have anticipated the horrifying blow that Mings would suffer just half an hour into the new campaign.

An enlightening tweak within the club has been recognised on social media, with the club’s official Instagram account posting a picture of the first team in training, with the addition of 19-year-old academy talent Lamare Bogarde.

Welcomed to the academy from Feyenoord back in 2020, the versatile defensive-minded player could be one to watch in the future in terms of eventual heirs to the English centre-back.

Who is Lamare Bogarde?

Born in Rotterdam, the teenager is deployed primarily in defensive midfield, however, has the ability to play at centre-back as he has done when called upon in his career.

Despite not playing for the senior team at Villa yet, the teenager earned himself vital experience away from youth level, spending half of last season on loan in League One at Bristol Rovers, before returning to the club this week on a season-long loan to further his experience and gain regular game time at this stage in his journey.

The Dutchman made 18 league appearances for Rovers last term, showcasing his talents and impressing at his first taste of senior football after featuring heavily in the Premier League 2 for the academy.

tyrone-mings-aston-villa-unai-emery-ollie-watkins

Averaging 1.8 tackles and 0.7 interceptions for his loan side, via WhoScored, the teenager certainly impressed during his short time at the Memorial Stadium, praised heavily by club manager and former Premier League midfielder Joey Barton.

As relayed by Birmingham Live, Barton dubbed the Dutchman as “quality”, singling out his composure and maturity as his strengths, as well as being called a player that “does a bit of everything”.

It's no wonder the former Newcastle United and Manchester City midfielder has returned to sign the promising Bodymoor Heath talent on loan once again.

The teenager's spell away from Villa could pave the way to his eventual breakthrough at this parent club, with Mings being 30 years of age and set to miss a huge chunk of the season through injury.

Also hailed by Barton as a player with “enormous potential”, Emery's inclusion of the 19-year-old in training prior to his departure could be an exciting indication that he is set for an extensive future with the Villans, one that is likely to see him usurp the aforementioned first-team star within a few years.

Ranji game halted as man drives onto the pitch in Delhi

A man drove into the Palam ground and tried to deliberately swerve in towards the pitch forcing the match officials to temporarily halt the game between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh

A major security breach at the Air Force Sports Complex in Palam allowed a man, who identified himself as Girish Sharma, to drive his car onto the field of play and into the pitch during the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh Ranji game at Palam ‘A’ ground in New Delhi on Friday. The man claimed he didn’t see any security and was merely lost, despite what looked like deliberate swerves to drive over the pitch twice, completely ignoring attempts from players and umpires to stop him. A number of international players like Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Ishant Sharma and Rishabh Pant are in action.Justice Vikramjit Sen, the administrator in charge of DDCA, said that the issue was being sorted by the Services Control Board, which is in charge of the Palam ground. “Fortunately there was no injury to any of the players. We are trying to sort the issue,” Justice Sen said. Asked if the incident will put a cloud over matches in future at the venue, Justice Sen said all points would be considered based upon the investigation. The BCCI’s anti-corruption unit (ACU) is understood to be not in charge of security during domestic tournament. However the ACU is in touch with the concerned authorities to facilitate the probe. The incident took place at 4.40pm, 20 minutes from close of play after the match officials took the half hour extension to make up for the over-rate.
