Energised Middlesex keep title glory in their sights

Middlesex have laid the groundwork for a total which will require them to bat only once in this match and move a step closer to the County Championship title

ScorecardNick Gubbins was once again in the runs as Middlesex took command at Old Trafford•Getty ImagesThese two teams cannot wait for next week. For Middlesex it should bring a title-deciding duel against Yorkshire at Lord’s; for Lancashire the hope is that it will bring merely safety from relegation, although that may only be achieved if Steven Croft’s team gain plenty of points from both the current game and their last match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston. They cannot depend on other’s failings. In those two contrasting finales, one glorious, one rather modest, is told the multi-layered story of a season to which some cricketers are ready to bid farewell. The spectators at Old Trafford may talk fondly of summer’s lease having all too short a date; Croft’s players are looking back gratefully to the darling wins of May, without which they would be up the creek and paddleless. Perspective is all. This diversity was reflected in the cricket on the first day of this game. After gritting it out against the new ball – only five runs were scored off the opening seven overs – Sam Robson and Nick Gubbins batted with increasing assurance and seemed resolved to make the most of Croft’s very surprising invitation to have first use of an Emirates Old Trafford wicket which did not play the batsmen false.By lunch Middlesex’s openers had 93 runs on the board and had hit 14 fours, the majority of them through the covers when Lancashire’s seamers overpitched. Croft used five bowlers in the first 24 overs and it was not just the openers’ old-fashioned cable-knit sweaters that gave the morning’s cricket an air of one of those Ashes Tests in the 1990s when Australia racked up over 300 runs in a day, England wondered from where the next success was coming and every week brought a new investigation into the state of the summer game.It was also a day’s cricket played on a flat pitch and a day on which the fall of each of the three wickets came as something of a surprise, even to home supporters. By its close, Middlesex will be pleased to have collected two bonus points and to have laid the groundwork for a total which will require them to bat only once in this match. Amid all the discussions of pitches and tosses, it remains true that the best team generally wins a four-day game which is allowed to run its course. Lancashire batsmen may need to be ready for a tough examination over the final two days.Three breakthroughs were made, though, and the first of them in the afternoon session arrived when Gubbins attempted to pull a ball from Kyle Jarvis but caught it too high on the bat and gave a straightforward catch to Alviro Petersen at midwicket. The opener could not have struck the ball much less well had he hit it with a frying pan and his departure was a disappointment for the neutrals. He had looked the more convincing of the two openers during his innings of 69 and had quietly reinforced the case that the England selectors should be considering him for the winter tours.Robson batted more fluently in the afternoon session and had accelerated to 77 when he drove all too loosely at a ball from Simon Kerrigan and only edged a catch to Liam Livingstone at slip. But this was a day in which Middlesex followed every coach’s instruction to bat in partnerships. Once Robson was out, the baton was passed to Nick Compton, who had pulled his first ball from Jarvis almost savagely to the square-leg boundary before remaining runless for the next 29.Eventually, though, even Compton came out of his shell by clipping Kerrigan through midwicket for three fours and then hitting the slow left-armer over long on for six. He, in turn, reached his own fifty off 119 balls before being bowled by Jarvis by one which nipped back through the narrowest of gates. Dawid Malan prevented Lancashire having more joy with the new ball and he was 49 not out when bad light ended play early. As for Croft’s players, one or two of them may have been wondering why they were in the field at all, given that they had won the toss. At times they looked enervated and a few may have been comforted by the fact that it is only 11 more sleeps until the end of the season. It was a curiously tiring day. Before Lancashire’s players can put their feet up, though, there is a lot of batting for them to do and that task should be eased by the presence of Jos Buttler, England’s pro tem one-day skipper, and by the excellent form of both Petersen and Haseeb Hameed. This match has already been made memorable for Hameed by the award of his full Lancashire cap, the presentation of which took place in the lunch interval. What may have made the occasion a trifle less exciting for him was being informed of the honour by Matt Proctor, the public address announcer at Old Trafford, rather than the Lancashire chairman, Michael Cairns.Never mind. Hameed has been capped after 18 first-class matches and is the youngest Lancashire player to be capped since World War II, when records of this sort of thing began. For many home supporters, seeing Hameed receive his cap was the best moment of the day although the player himself may eventually remember this week for other reasons. Middlesex’s cricketers may recall it happily, too. They are not tired in the slightest. Chasing titles keeps you fresh.

Chelsea Can Secure Drogba 2.0 In "Ridiculous" £130m Target

Chelsea, for all the immense talent they have acquired since Todd Boehly's arrival as owner, are still lacking that clinical focal point up top.

This means that no matter how comfortable in possession they can be, or how solid their defence remains, with little threat up top they are so easy to thwart.

Therefore, it is not surprising to see that the Blues have claimed just a sole victory in all competitions since early March, with their tally of 36 goals the joint-fourth lowest in the Premier League.

Frank Lampard has offered little in the way of a new manager bounce, however, it seems that with each passing day, the announcement of Mauricio Pochettino nears.

In the proven Argentine, it is hoped that they have snagged a top-class head coach capable of welding together this makeshift side and propelling them into a brighter future.

However, should he not address their glaring issue, the problems of this miserable campaign will persist.

Therefore, should the reports linking them with a move for "main target" Victor Osimhen be true, the former Tottenham Hotspur boss simply must fork out the reported €150m (£130m) price tag this summer. It would mark a small price to pay to add that final piece of the jigsaw that could knit together a stumbling team at last.

How good is Victor Osimhen?

It is a testament to the quality of the Nigerian forward that he has earned comparisons with the legendary former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.

When told about these rumours, talkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist boldly claimed: "He's the only striker I've seen in the last 10 years that reminds a little bit of Didier Drogba."

Given his goalscoring feats this season, such a notion is certainly well-founded.

After all, his 23 goals and five assists have proved instrumental in firing the Naples outfit to their first league title since 1990.

These figures mean that already the 24-year-old has already outscored all but one of the former Ivory Coast international's nine Premier League campaigns, a feat Statman Dave has branded as a "ridiculous output".

didier-drogba-chelsea-transfer

However, it is not just his potency that likens Osimhen to the 45-year-old, who truly cemented his legacy in west London after first scoring in normal time before coolly slotting the penalty that handed Chelsea the most unlikely of Champions League triumphs in 2012.

Both of these hulking forwards have blistering pace that belies their immense physique, and these raw assets would be emphasised further when surrounded by the technical proficiency of Kai Havertz, Enzo Fernandez and potentially Joao Felix as well.

The fact that BBC Sport contributor Raj Chohan has also lauded him as someone who "presses like a monster" only feeds into this notion.

Given the young African powerhouse has already admitted that Drogba remains his idol, there would be no better place to emulate his glittering career than at Stamford Bridge, should Pochettino convince him to make the move and Boehly fork out another expensive fee this summer.

Leeds: Special £20k-p/w Ace Could Star Under Allardyce

Wilfried Gnonto's ongoing omission from the Leeds United side was perhaps one reason why the fanbase quickly turned against Javi Gracia.

The Spaniard was sacked by the Yorkshire outfit following the 4-1 defeat against relegation rivals Bournemouth last weekend which leaves the club hovering just above the bottom three in the Premier League.

While Leeds' main problems were in the defence, Gracia was often criticised for his failure to start Gnonto in the games following the international break, with the Italian starting just three times in the Premier League under the former Watford boss.

Indeed, speaking on the situation after the youngster failed to feature against Leicester, former Leeds man Jermaine Beckford said: "He’s one of those players that as soon as he picks the ball up he’s so direct but his close control, such focus, such passion and the drive – the fans buzz off that sort of stuff. That’s what you need, especially when you’re at home.

"I don’t know [why he wasn’t brought on], if I’m being completely honest. I don’t know. I don’t know [why he wasn’t brought on], if I’m being completely honest."

Although the teenage winger did get the nod against the Cherries last Saturday and marked his return to the starting side with an impressive assist for Patrick Bamford, it wasn't enough for Gracia to keep his job.

What has Sam Allardyce said about Wilfried Gnonto?

Sam Allardyce's arrival at Elland Road suggests that the Peacocks will become a far more solid outfit at the back for the final four Premier League games given his history as a defensive-minded coach, but Gnonto is one attacking player who could prosper under the former Bolton boss.

After all, the experienced Englishman has already sung the winger's praises and suggested that he should be starting for Leeds when speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast last month.

He commented: "There are a couple of players who in my opinion should be playing. Wilfried Gnonto, the young Italian kid.

"Fantastic. He's so positive, so driven, so direct with the ball, he gets the play up the field, and he doesn't mind defending as well."

Only Jack Harrison has registered more assists in the Premier League than Gnonto this season, while the youngster also ranks sixth for shots, third for key passes and third for dribbles per game in Leeds' squad, which emphasises the impact he can have going forward.

Skilful wingers such as Jay-Jay Okocha and Gary Speed played a huge part for Allardyce during his time at Bolton, making 265 appearances between them, and if he utilises his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation again at Leeds, then Gnonto could prosper out wide.

The Italy international has been limited to just 20 appearances in the Premier League so far this term but only Harrison and Rodrigo have contributed to more goals, which suggests that he was under-used by Gracia and could still have a big say under Allardyce.

Michael Skubala certainly thinks that Gnonto is a "special" talent and the £20k-per-week winger could prove to be exactly that in the remaining four games if Allardyce sticks to his word and starts him.

Leeds: £30k-p/w Kid Could Cost The Club £50m

Leeds United’s Illan Meslier is widely regarded as one of the best young goalkeepers in the Premier League.

The Frenchman has been lauded for his ability on the ball and shot-stopping skills, with pundits, players and fans alike all pointing towards his excellent potential long-term potential as a reason to stick by him when he makes mistakes.

Jesse Marsch said: “First of all I think Illan’s talent is massive. He is a young goalkeeper that is as good as any young goalkeeper I have ever seen. That’s really exciting.”

At 23, the ‘keeper became the youngest player in top-flight history to reach 100 appearances, yet it could be argued that Leeds fans are still seeing the same skinny, baby-faced player who first came into the side during the Championship title-winning season.

With the Yorkshire side now officially boasting the worst defensive record in the division after shipping 11 goals in the recent home defeats against Crystal Palace and Liverpool, questions must now surely be asked of Meslier.

Has Meslier progressed or regressed in his time at Leeds?

Meslier would make his first Leeds appearances in the 2019/20 campaign, featuring ten times in the second tier for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, keeping an impressive seven clean sheets and conceding just four times in that run, so it was easy to see why the Argentine manager was happy to make him his number one following promotion.

This helped him earn a superb 6.95 rating from WhoScored and he followed that up with an inspired debut season in the top flight, earning a 6.91 average rating across his 35 outings, keeping 11 clean sheets and conceding 52 goals.

Leeds were often criticised for being too open defensively under Bielsa but Meslier’s record has only got worse since the legendary manager’s departure, with the Frenchman remarkably conceding 138 times across the last two Premier League seasons.

The 60 shipped by the goalkeeper so far this campaign could easily surpass the 78 he conceded in the 2021/22 season, especially if Javi Gracia’s side continues their woeful recent form.

Unsurprisingly, so many goals conceded and so few clean sheets, with just ten in his last 69 top-flight appearances, have meant that Meslier’s average rating from WhoScored has fallen off a cliff in the last two seasons.

The Frenchman’s shocking 6.49 rating so far this term ranks him as the 17th-best performer in Gracia’s squad, and yet it has never really been suggested that he could be dropped, perhaps due to the lack of options available to the Spaniard at Elland Road.

illan-meslier-leeds-united-yassine-bounou

Leeds have Joel Robles and youngster Kristoffer Klaesson waiting in the wings, but the former has just two appearances in cup competitions to his name so far this season, which suggests that Meslier is always going to be the first choice.

The lack of depth available to Gracia in between the sticks could prove costly, as Meslier perhaps knows that he is guaranteed to start and has seen his standards drop as a result.

Should Meslier be dropped by Leeds?

Worryingly, Leeds have been expected to concede just 53.84 goals according to Understat this season, which suggests that Meslier is underperforming by 6.16 xG, the fourth-worst in the division behind Leicester City, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur.

A more reliable goalkeeper might have kept those six extra goals out, which could prove vital at the end of the season, as the competitiveness at the bottom of the league suggests that goal difference could easily be decisive.

Jamie Carragher didn’t hold back in his criticism of the shot-stopper following the heavy defeat against Liverpool recently, describing him as a “kid” with “no presence.”

Meslier could hardly be considered commanding in between the sticks and considering how shaky Leeds’ defence has looked in recent weeks, sticking with the youngster could prove disastrous for the club.

Relegation is thought to cost Premier League sides around £50m and Leeds would also undoubtedly lose some of their top talents should they sink back to the Championship this season.

Indeed, the former FC Lorient man has been one touted with an Elland Road exit, with top sides reportedly interested amid the possibility of relegation, with Leeds likely to demand around £40m.

Again, it seems as if interested sides are also gambling on Meslier’s potential, as his performances this season certainly wouldn’t justify that price tag.

If Garcia continues to put his faith in the £30k-per-week shot-stopper, then it could just cost Leeds their spot in the Premier League next season.

Chelsea Could Sign Own Haaland With £97m "Animal"

Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic in the summer transfer window and the Serbian could be Graham Potter's own version of Erling Haaland at Stamford Bridge.

Could Chelsea sign Dusan Vlahovic?

According to journalist Ben Jacobs earlier this month, both Manchester United and Chelsea are keen on the former Fiorentina forward and a departure from Juventus this summer is a very real possibility.

The Old Lady have endured a difficult season in Serie A and were docked 15 points earlier this year due to financial irregularities and false accounting, so a fire sale could be on the cards this summer as they look to balance the books.

Although Chelsea may not be able to offer Vlahovic European football, unless their Premier League form drastically improves following the international break, the temptation of being the main man in this youthful revolution at Stamford Bridge may be tough for the 23-year-old to turn down.

However, he won't come cheap for Todd Boehly, as it was reported earlier this year that the Serbia international would set any interested sides back an eye-watering €110m (£97m).

Despite Juventus' struggles on and off the pitch, which leave them seventh in Italy's top flight, Vlahovic has caught the eye with his performances this season, hitting 11 goals in all competitions for Max Allegri's side, including eight in 18 Serie A appearances.

Journalist Siavoush Fallahi was full of praise for the young striker last season on Twitter, writing:

"Vlahovic is a beast. Half chance, wrong foot, against two and scores. Offside but insane how little Allegri-ball is serving a world-class striker. He’s like an animal in a cage."

This description of the Juventus star is similar to the performances we have seen from Haaland in his first season as a Manchester City player, with the young Norwegian boasting an incredible 42 goals in all competitions for Pep Guardiola's side.

Is Vlahovic like Haaland?

According to FBref, Haaland is the tenth-most similar player to Vlahovic when compared to other strikers across Europe's top leagues.

This season has seen the two powerful number nines register similar numbers with regard to key passes (17 vs 19), goal-creating actions per 90 (0.37 vs 0.47) and shots per 90 (3.14 vs 3.62).

This emphasises that both frontmen are capable of creating chances as well as putting them away, which is something Potter has lacked in his squad so far this campaign, as Kai Havertz leads the way for Premier League goals with just seven to his name.

In fact, some even think the Juve frontman is superior to the aforementioned Norwegian, with Serbian FA president Nenad Bjekovic remarking: "Vlahovic is better and more complete than Haaland.

"The Norwegian has devastating power, but Dusan is not inferior: there is also very little difference in their height."

If Vlahovic can have even half the impact at Chelsea that Haaland has had at City, then he will surely prove to be a worthwhile addition in the summer transfer window.

Big clubs set to move for Arsenal target Caicedo

Arsenal could be one of the sides who may make a move for Moises Caicedo in the summer, with Brighton & Hove Albion expecting approaches from big clubs.

Do Arsenal still want Caicedo?

Over the January transfer window, the Gunners’ interest in Caicedo was well reported with the Seagulls believed to have knocked back two offers from Mikel Arteta’s side.

And since the winter window, the midfielder has put pen to paper on a new deal on the south coast which will see his contractual stay through until 2027.

Now with four years remaining on his deal at the Amex Stadium, Arsenal may have a tougher task on their hands if they are to pursue their interest in the Ecuadorian.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has claimed the new deal at Brighton does not include a release clause, with the Seagulls expecting bigger clubs to come knocking in the summer:

“The expectation is for big clubs to be back again in the summer. So things will happen again around Moises Caicedo in the summer; of course, Brighton will be stronger in the negotiation after this new contract. There is no release clause in the contract of Moises Caicedo, but he’s one to watch in the summer, for sure.”

Is Caicedo worth the money?

It is believed the Gunners had offered in the region of £70m for Caicedo in January, which does beg the question of what Brighton will now be asking for him.

Having penned a new deal, the Seagulls now appear to be in a stronger position than they were earlier in the year to demand a higher fee for their midfielder.

Arsenal have also been linked with a potential move for Declan Rice this summer, who only has one-year remaining on his current deal at West Ham United.

The pair have established themselves as two of the best in the Premier League in their position but this new deal may potentially eliminate the notion of going for both in the summer.

Rice has proven the bigger attacking threat – albeit only scoring twice – having provided more shot-creating actions per 90 minutes in comparison to Caicedo (via FBref).

However, the Brighton man has averaged more tackles and passes per 90 minutes compared to the England midfielder this season.

Having also offered more tackles per 90 than current Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey, Caicedo has shown signs of potentially being able to provide the Gunners with a long-term option in midfield.

However, this new deal may potentially put a spanner in the works, with the asking price possibly skyrocketing on the back of the contract extension.

Everton transfer news on Beto and Becao

Everton could reportedly make a €44m (£38.7m) bid to try and sign Udinese duo Beto and Rodrigo Becao.

The Lowdown: January interest

Everton reportedly had a late offer for Beto rejected in the January transfer window, with Udinese feeling that they could sell in July instead.

They were also linked with a late move for Becao, under the condition that Michael Keane would leave, but the Englishman ended up staying put at Goodison Park.

The Latest: Summer swoop?

As per local outlet Udinese Blog, the Merseyside club could make a £38.7m offer to sign both players this summer, which could take shape ‘in the coming weeks’.

Sean Dyche has ‘suggested’ Beto’s name in particular, and is preparing to return for him in the next window after receiving a ‘no’ from Udinese in January.

The Verdict: Reinforcements needed

Of course, there are no guarantees that the Toffees will stay up this season, but if they do, reinforcements will be needed in order to make sure that they are not in the same situation next term.

They have struggled for goals all season, being the joint-lowest scorers in the Premier League with 17, and Beto would certainly help in that regard, having achieved double figures for goals in each of his last three league campaigns, and seven so far in the Serie A with Udinese this term (Transfermarkt).

Becao would improve the team defensively, with the centre-back ranking in the 97th percentile for touches, 96th for tackles and 89th for non-penalty goals of all his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues over the past year, among other metrics that makes him a complete defender (FBRef).

Nonetheless, both players have the potential to break into the starting line-up under Dyche, and so this is a double deal that the Blues should be seriously considering.

Sessegnon "devastated" after Spurs injury

Journalist Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur player Ryan Sessegnon is “absolutely devastated” after picking up a hamstring injury.

What’s the latest on Sessegnon’s injury at Spurs?

It was a pretty bad day for Spurs on Saturday as they were thumped 4-1 away from home against Leicester City. Things were going poorly before the game even kicked off, however.

Indeed, Sessegnon was said to be out of the match-day squad entirely with a supposed injury. Since then, it has become clear that the defender is set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

While speaking on his YouTube channel, Gold revealed that the player would be out for “at least six weeks” and that this development has left the player extremely disappointed.

The journalist explained: “Ryan Sessegnon, somehow, in a training session – whether it was the next day, it was certainly pretty close to the game – another hamstring injury.

“Honestly… another hamstring injury, and from what I understand, it is going to keep him out for at least six weeks.”He added: “I’m just gutted for Ryan Sessegnon. I know he’s absolutely devastated by this. 22 years old, poor kid. It just seems to be his thing, hamstring problems.”What does the Sessegnon injury mean for Spurs?Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has trusted Sessegnon fairly regularly so far this season, with the 22-year-old playing 23 games across all competitions already. However, the Italian may have some concerns about the player’s long-term fitness. After all, despite his young age, he has already suffered multiple hamstring injuries and has spent periods on the sidelines before due to various other issues throughout his time in north London and at Fulham before then.In the meantime, it looks as though Ivan Perisic will have to play the bulk of the games on the left side of the Tottenham defence over the coming weeks. He had mostly been sharing minutes with Sessegnon in that role, but the 34-year-old likely won’t get much rest from now on – although Ben Davies also fill in at left-back if Conte opted to change to a back four.

Everton: Forest set to win Ayew race

Everton are reportedly now set to lose out on the signing of free agent Andre Ayew to Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest.

The Lowdown: Ayew talks

The Toffees have reportedly been in talks to try and sign Ayew, who can move outside of the transfer window as a free agent.

The Goodison Park outfit failed to strengthen their squad in January, and also sold winger Anthony Gordon to Newcastle United, meaning that their squad is weaker going into the second part of the season as they face another relegation battle.

The Latest: Forest set to win race

As per The Daily Mail, Forest are now ‘set to win the race’ for Ayew, as he would prefer to move to the City Ground over the Toffees.

The Merseyside club could back come back into the equation if Forest decided against a move, but Ayew is currently keen to move to Forest and reunite with his former manager Steve Cooper, who he played under at Swansea City.

The Verdict: Big blow

If Sean Dyche’s side were to lose out on Ayew to Forest, then it would be another big blow in terms of trying to strengthen their squad for the second part of the campaign.

Once hailed as a ‘game changer’ by his manager Slaven Bilic during his time at West Ham United, Ayew is vastly experienced at Premier League level, having scored 21 times and made a further 12 assists in 89 games over three terms for both the Hammers and Swansea (Transfermarkt).

The 33-year-old would also bring leadership to the pitch, having captained Ghana at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, also scoring the first goal from an African team at the tournament.

With 177 strikes for both club and country combined over the course of his career, Ayew knows where the back of the net is, and the Blues are in desperate need of some help in the attacking third being the second-lowest scorers in the Premier League.

Nonetheless, it would be a real disappointment if Everton were to lose out on this deal.
