Erling Haaland told ‘10 years is a very long time’ after signing decade-long contract with Man City as club legend casts doubt on ‘world’s No.1 striker’ seeing out deal

Questions have been asked of whether Erling Haaland will honour his contract at Manchester City, with it pointed out that “10 years is a long time”.

Norwegian tied to deal through to 2034Could break countless records in that timeLa Liga transfer talk seemingly never far awayFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Premier League champions City have moved to tie their prolific Norwegian striker down to a deal that is due to run until the summer of 2034. Haaland is considered to be a key part of present and future plans at the Etihad Stadium.

AdvertisementGettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

It is easy to see why City would want such terms in place, with the 24-year-old frontman hitting 118 goals through 136 appearances. Haaland has collected major honours at home and abroad, but has also generated plenty of transfer talk when it comes to supposed interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona.

WHAT RICHARD DUNNE SAID

Quizzed on whether Haaland will see out a decade-long deal in Manchester, former City captain Richard Dunne – speaking in association with – told GOAL: “It’s unheard of, a contract that length. It’s exceptional that he’s got something like that.

“I suppose the couple of seasons that he’s had have proven what he can do. It’s a case of can he do it for that length of time? I’m sure he can, but things change an awful lot in football and 10 years is a very long time.

“If he’s still there, brilliant. At the moment he’s the No.1 striker in world football. If City can keep him, that’s amazing. But also for the Premier League, to have him for that amount of time. Whether he actually goes and sees that deal out remains to be seen.”

If Haaland were to hang around at City, then he will likely rewrite the history books. Pressed on the possibility of every record being broken if 10 more years are spent at the Etihad, Dunne added: “You would imagine. On paper, yeah. Given what he’s done so far, yes. But, he still has to score nearly 30 goals every season. It’s still a huge ask and an incredible achievement what he’s doing at the moment.

“It looks like he’s the one that would break [Alan] Shearer’s record and set records that would never be beaten again. To keep that consistency over a period of time isn’t the easiest. We have seen it this season, where he has probably not got the goals that he expected. Man City haven’t had the season that they would’ve expected.

“It will happen over the course of the next 10 years and might not happen again. It’s hard but any man playing football at the moment that you thought had a chance of breaking all the records, he is certainly the one. Given the amount of time that he is hopefully going to be there, he’s got a real opportunity to do it.”

Having reached the pinnacle of one sporting profession, the England captain has hinted at heading down another route once the day comes to hang up goal-scoring boots. The qualities that he possesses when it comes to ball striking could transfer favourably into American football.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Kane is, however, just as passionate about life on the fairways as he is the field. The 31-year-old often trades football clubs for the wood and iron variety, with the Bayern Munich striker taking as much pleasure from finding the bottom of the cup as he does hitting the back of the net.

  • WHAT HARRY KANE SAID

With that in mind, Kane has been discussing his best round on – with a score being posted that Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods would be proud of. He said: "My best round is actually a 66, six under par. Don’t ask me how! I’ve never been close to it since.

"But that was about three years ago now. Just had one of those days where everything went well for me. I had eight birdies, two bogeys and the rest pars. I don’t know if I’ll be beating that any time soon, if I’m honest.

"I’ve had a three under before, 69, had a few two unders and one unders. But they were all a few years ago. I need to get my game back in shape and hopefully try and hit those numbers again."

    WHAT NEXT?

Kane’s day job is keeping him busy at present, as he chases down long-awaited major silverware, and that is preventing him from spending endless hours on the golf course. He will see his calendar cleared at some stage, though, and it may be that he starts taking chips and driving a little more seriously.

Rangers must sack Clement to appoint manager with 3 league title wins

Glasgow Rangers head coach Philippe Clement’s future has been thrown into doubt in recent days amid the possibility of him being a target for the Belgium FA.

Domenico Todesco’s position is under threat and the Daily Record recently reported that the Gers boss would be among the candidates to replace him if Belgium decide to part ways with their current manager.

However, IbroxNews then claimed that they would not be able to pursue the Rangers tactician unless the Scottish giants sack him, as they do not have the finances to pay the compensation that would be required.

With this in mind, the Light Blues board must take the decision to relieve the Belgian manager of his duties, after a poor start to the 2024/25 campaign.

Why Rangers should sack Philippe Clement

Firstly, Clement has been at Ibrox for over a year and there is still no clear style of play that supporters can identify with, with the Daily Record writing in October that some supporters have criticised games with too many short passes and others have bemoaned too many long balls in matches.

There has to be consistent success on the pitch to back up a lack of style in the team’s play and that has, unfortunately, not been the case for Clement.

Philippe Clement

His team were knocked by Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League play-off, sending his side to the Europa League, and Rangers have struggled badly in the Scottish Premiership.

The Gers have lost three of their 11 league games and find themselves a whopping nine points behind Aberdeen and Celtic, which has given them a mountain to climb in the title race.

Rangers must now part ways with the Belgian boss and consider a swoop for former Porto boss Sergio Conceicao, who has been out of work since the end of last season.

Why Rangers should appoint Sergio Conceicao

The Portuguese tactician has not been linked with a move to Ibrox but his career record suggests that he could be a sensible appointment, if the Gers are to brutally sack Clement after his poor start to the season and lack of an exciting style of play after 13 months.

Conceicao, who Fabio Capello claimed has a “winning mentality” and “what it takes” to manage AC Milan earlier this year, is a proven winner who lifted 11 trophies during his time with Porto.

The 4-2-3-1 tactician won three Liga Portugal titles, four Portuguese Cups, three Portuguese League Cups, and one Portuguese Super Cups before his exit at the end of last season, having won his fourth Portuguese Cup.

Across 368 matches with Porto, Conceicao averaged an impressive 2.29 points per game. Meanwhile, Clement has averaged 2.16 per game across 63 games at Ibrox, which immediately suggests that the out-of-work tactician could come in and provide more consistency at league level.

In terms of his style of play, Breaking The Lines once produced a lengthy, detailed, piece on his system and build-up play, which essentially uses recycling of the ball in deep possession before using rotations in forward positions to create chances when the play progresses through the thirds.

Whether or not Rangers fans would prefer that to Clement’s varied approach is completely subjective, but the facts behind the two managers’ respective teams suggest that Conceicao could come in as an upgrade and that is why the board must attempt to swoop for the 50-year-old after sacking the Belgian.

9 duels won: Chelsea’s international hero can be "game-changer" for Maresca

One thing that has been a clear focus for Chelsea since Todd Boehly bought the club in 2022 was to build a strong core of young players. Granted, this has not been a cheap process, but there is no doubt the Blues have a good group of youngsters with whom they can build towards the future.

Of course, there are several of these players who are already making waves in the first team with Enzo Maresca. The likes of Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson spring to mind, both of whom are just 23 years of age. Cole Palmer is younger, only 22, and Romeo Lavia is 20 years old.

Cole Palmer for Chelsea

With such stiff competition for places, it does leave some of the younger players on the fringe of the squad with fewer chances to impress.

However, several of the Blues’ younger stars have picked up minutes on international duty this week.

Chelsea’s young international stars

There have been five prominent players at Stamford Bridge who have been playing age-group football for their countries during the November international break. Goalkeeper Lucas Bergstrom is one player away on international duty. The Finland youth international helped his side to a 5-1 thrashing over Norway, conceding a goal in the 42nd minute.

Marc Guiu is another young player away with his national team’s age group side. The striker, who joined the Blues from Barcelona in the summer, plays for Spain’s under-19 side but did not get on the scoresheet in a 3-0 win over the Faroe Islands under-19s. He recently scored his first goal for Chelsea in the Europa Conference League against FC Noah.

Frustratingly, one player pushing for a starting berth at Stamford Bridge, Filip Jorgensen, had to pull out of national team duty with injury. Since joining from Villarreal last season, the goalkeeper has played seven times for the Blues and could have had a chance to further stake his claim with Denmark under-21s this week had it not been for a fitness issue.

Malo Gusto, who has played 11 games for the Blues this season in captain Reece James’ absence, should also have played age-group football this week, for France under-21s. Sadly, like Jorgensen, the right-back also missed the November camp due to injury.

Malo Gusto in action for Chelsea

Interestingly, Gusto could have played against a Chelsea teammate had he stayed with the squad, Italy under-21 midfielder Cesare Casadei.

Casadei’s time with Italy under-21s

Talented Italian midfielder Casadei has had a tough time of things at Stamford Bridge. He initially joined the club in 2022 from Inter and cost £12.6m up front with a further £4.2m in add-ons.

Cesare Casadei

He has so far played just 15 times for the club, having been out on loan at Reading in his first season and Leicester City last term, before being recalled in January. The midfielder played under Maresca at the King Power Stadium, so it may be surprising that he has featured just four times under him this season.

He certainly impressed for Italy under-21s this week, against Gusto’s nation of France. The former Inter academy starlet got himself on the scoresheet from midfield but was superb outside of that. The 6 foot 1 midfielder also won nine duels and created one chance, as per Sofascore.

It might well be frustrating for the youngster that he has not quite had an opportunity under Maresca yet. Football analyst Ben Mattinson described him as a “game changer”, praising his ability to arrive into the box and get on the end of crosses.

cesare-casadei-italy-chelsea

With the Blues fighting on all fronts in three competitions, including the FA Cup which is yet to get started for them, there are plenty of opportunities for Casadei to stake a claim for a more permanent role in the Stamford Bridge midfield.

His performance against France will only have worked in his favour, and Casadei will no doubt be hoping to kick on from here. As Mattinson stated, he could well be a ‘game changer’ for the Blues in the near future.

Zafar Gohar re-signs for 2022 season with Gloucestershire

Zafar Gohar, the Pakistan left-arm spinner, will return to Gloucestershire for the 2022 season, as the club prepare for their first Division One campaign since 2005.Gohar collected 20 wickets at a cost of 14.35 in four Championship games earlier this year – including a match haul of 11 for 101 against Durham – as Gloucestershire finished second in Division Two.He will be available on a pay-as-you-play basis from next April, before moving on to a full contract for August and September, with Will Brown, Gloucestershire’s chief executive, suggesting the club were “on the cusp of something really special” after bringing in Gohar alongside Australia opener Marcus Harris to fill their overseas spots.”The signing of Zafar is another great moment for the club,” Brown said. “We feel like we’re on the cusp of something really special with the squad we’re assembling and we’re confident of being able to challenge for silverware in 2022.”Zafar was a big hit with supporters at the back end of last season and we’re confident that he’ll be able to make important contributions for The Shire once again next season across all formats, including the County Championship, where we’ll be playing against the best cricketers in the country in Division One.”Related

Gohar, who has played one Test and one ODI for Pakistan, is Gloucestershire’s first signing since confirmation of Dale Benkenstein’s appointment as head coach earlier in the week.”Playing county cricket this year and making my debut for Gloucestershire was the realisation of an ambition I’ve had for some time,” Gohar said. “Getting the opportunity to pull on a Gloucestershire shirt and contribute to a winning team was a great start to my career in England, and I’m very pleased to be returning for a longer stint next year.”We have a team capable of challenging anyone, and some great momentum from 2021 to build on. I can’t wait to get back and hopefully pick up where I left off.”Steve Snell, performance director at Gloucestershire Cricket, added: “We’re thrilled to have Zafar back onboard for next season, he’s already proven just how much quality he has and we’re really excited to see him in action again next year.”It’s a real bonus that Zafar is available for selection right from day one, he provides the squad with depth and makes selection even more difficult for our new head coach Dale Benkenstein, which is a positive problem to have.”

Sourav Ganguly wants postponed Old Trafford Test to be fifth Test of series

The BCCI president had earlier been quoted saying he wanted the match to be a standalone event

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Sep-2021The replacement match for the now-cancelled Manchester Test should be continuation of the five-match England-India Test series and not a one-off Test, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has clarified. India could not field a team in the series-decider because of a Covid-19 outbreak among the support staff of the team following which the fate of the series, which India lead 2-1, hangs in the balance.Related

Abandoned, forfeited or postponed? Official result of Manchester Test to have big repercussions for ECB

Ganguly on India sitting out Old Trafford Test: The players were dead scared, you can't blame them

“We want the series to be completed as this will be our first series win [in England] since 2007,” Ganguly told PTI. “The BCCI maintains that Test cricket is the ultimate format, and we won’t compromise it for anything.”We are ready to play extra ODI and T20Is and that’s not an issue. Just that the Test match that will be played later will be the fifth match of the series.”Ganguly had been quoted by Kolkata-based earlier in the day saying that the replacement Test should be a one-off.How the ICC views this Test – forfeited, abandoned or rescheduled – will have implications not just for the series result but also the ECB’s insurance cover. If it is considered abandoned because of the Covid-19 outbreak, it falls under “acceptable non-compliance” and ends the series 2-1 in India’s favour. It also means that ECB can’t claim its insurance cover in full because it doesn’t cover for Covid-19.However, ECB has made it a point to emphasise in its communications that none of the India players had tested positive, and that the match was called off keeping in mind the “mental health” of the players. In the meantime, it has emerged that the BCCI has offered to play a replacement Test when India travel to the UK for limited-overs internationals next year, but the status of such a match remains unclear. Ganguly has now clarified that India want it to be a continuation of this series. He will be in England later this month, and is expected to continue talks with the ECB.

Man City plotting huge new contract talks for another £220,000-a-week star

Txiki Begiristain and Manchester City have turned their attention to one of their key players and his contract situation amid interest from Real Madrid, according to a new report.

The Blues have made another strong start to the Premier League season, as their win over West Ham United on Saturday makes it three wins out of three as they bid to keep hold of the league title. The club had a very quiet transfer window, probably quieter than fans would have expected, but the hierarchy could soon be busy once again.

As stated, Man City had a very quiet transfer window, with the club just bringing two players in, and they were Savinho and İlkay Gündoğan. However, in terms of departures, they were busy, with their most high profile being forward Julian Alvarez, who joined Atletico Madrid.

Now that the transfer window has shut, the club is turning their attention to contracts. One player who has entered the final year of his deal at the Etihad is Manchester City talisman Kevin de Bruyne.

The Belgian superstar was the subject of interest from Saudi Arabia earlier in the summer transfer window, but an offer never came in for the midfielder. However, it put his future at the club into doubt, but the Manchester City man has since said that “conversations” will be had over a potential new contract.

De Bruyne believes that both he and the club will sit down and discuss a new contract once the season gets into full swing. It has since been reported by Football Insider that the midfielder is expected to sign a new contract with the club at some point this season. As well as looking to tie de Bruyne down to a new contract, the Man City board is also eyeing another player’s contract as well.

Man City plotting huge new contract talks with Rodri

According to GiveMeSport, Manchester City, led personally by Txiki, have set their sights on sitting down with midfielder Rodri and offering him a new "lucrative" contract. The Spanish midfielder has been with the Blues since July 2019, when he joined the club from Atletico Madrid.

The 28-year-old has been vital for Man City since he joined the club and has just come off the back of a summer where he won the European Championships with Spain. Rodri is now in the final three years of his £220,000 per week wage, but Pep Guardiola and co. are keen to reward the player for his fine form.

Rodri Euro 2024 Player of the Tournament

Man City want to offer the player an even bigger contract, with them keen to make it difficult for teams such as Real Madrid to lure the player away from the Etihad, as they believe the Spanish side could try and tempt the player to leave come the end of the season.

The report states that Txiki has been tasked personally with overseeing contract negotiations with Rodri as they try and make him one of the club’s highest earners in a five year deal that runs until 2029.

If you had to drop one of R Ashwin or Ravindra Jadeja, who was it going to be? While Jadeja’s batting and fielding add a lot more all-round value to the side compared with Ashwin, the offspinner offers something that the Indian team management has perhaps come to realize in recent times: the ability to create something irrespective of the conditions. Ashwin was the first to take a wicket here, as he has been on eight previous occasions when India haven’t taken a wicket in the first 20 overs of an innings. Ashwin gone for 22 off 27 balls.12.15pmIt is a long way down from thereNo slip. Two men behind square on the leg side. Two men just in front. One at midwicket. Three balls from Wagner to go before he will likely be taken off because the new ball will be available. Wagner bowls the short ball, Rahane looks to pull, tries to keep it down, but it is a long way down from that awkward chest height. And he is caught at forward square leg some 30 yards from the bat.It is possibly a miscalculation from Rahane. He doesn’t want a repeat of what happened in New Zealand when they just shut him out with the short ball for hours, but the new ball is just around and this plan is not going to be a prolonged one.Rahane goes for it, and pays the price after a superb innings whose hallmark was how late he played the ball. The thing with this New Zealand attack is that – on these tracks, mind, and not in Asia – you can exhaust yourself surviving two or three sets of plans and then there is always one more examination. India 182 for 6 in 78.4 overs. Rahane gone for 49 off 117 balls.Noon12.2 overs, 25 runs, 2 wicketsYou will have to call that New Zealand’s morning so far, but Rahane and Jadeja have added 15 in 3.2 overs in this partnership. And this seem likes a pitch where runs will be at a huge premium. India are 171 for 5, which is not a bad score at all given how much the pitch is doing. And it is time for the first drinks break of the day.11.45amJamieson’s morningGetty ImagesAnd now Kyle Jamieson has removed Rishabh Pant. A wide tempter, and a shackled Pant has a go at it, edging through to second slip. Pant got off the mark with the 20th ball he faced. And that was because Jamieson went straight looking for the lbw. This is almost a pitch where you are better off bowling a defensive line, especially when you have a five-man seam attack. Just keep the runs down, and the wicket-taking ball will come. Don’t risk giving away easy runs by going searching. New Zealand have followed that plan this morning, and taken two wickets for 10 runs in nine overs.India 156 for 5 in 73.4 overs. A sport fan’s experience is unique. Between watching high-quality skill, there are also frustrating waits. However, watching the players in flesh, watching them train and play, watching them having fun during warm-ups – these are things that make it an enriching experience.Dank, damp, soggy it might have been in Southampton the last three days, including Sunday, but the fans, majority of them Indians, have not been deterred. They have filled up to the 25% capacity allowed currently in England at sports stadia and made the noise and created a buzz without which this Ultimate Test might have sounds hollow. The fans are the biggest stakeholders in the end, and both the ICC and even the players recognise that.Indian captain Virat Kohli might have a lot of things on his mind, but on Sunday, about three quarters of an hour from start of play, he heard a young Indian fan call him. The youngster, just about 10 years old, just wanted Kohli to acknowledge him to begin with [Editor’s note: Was it Roman reigns in disguise?]. Walking up the stairs leading to the dressing room, Kohli stopped mid-stride, gave a smile and thumbs-up. Next he asked the youngster, “Having a good time?”. The youngster was jubilant. His parent asked Kohli whether he could take a picture. Kohli said: yes, after the match. That youngster might keep this story for life. It is just another example of the what being a fan means.

On the field, the ball is doing all sorts, and Rishabh Pant has just survived a marginal lbw call. It returned an umpire’s call on hitting the leg stump so the not-out call stayed. India 150 for 4 after 71 overs. Pant yet to open his account having faced 13 balls.11.15amKohli gets that rare jaffaAs Nasser Hussain has told you if you are watching the telly, Kyle Jamieson is easy to leave. According to HawkEye projections, only seven out of 94 balls from Jamieson will have gone on to hit the wicket. That seventh was the one that got Kohli out lbw. And thus ends another mini classic from Kohli. I know you are counting days since he scored a hundred, but I have rarely seen him bat better. He is so in control of what he is doing. He has been batting better than he did in 2018 where he left himself open to chance. The hundreds will come. Till then, enjoy the Kutty Classics.India 149 for 4 in 67.4 overs. Virat Kohli gone for 44 off 132 balls.11amKohli v de Grandhomme’I don’t need to get in an ego battle with you’•Getty ImagesHe is all set to end up as a handful of all-time great batsmen. His response to the quickest of quicks has been to cut down the distance between him and the bowler. “Treat them like a spinner,” Sachin Tendulkar told him.He is a trundler. A typical New Zealand dibbly dobbly. Ironically he is called Sir Colin in cricketing circles because to an outsider it can seem he is being given the respect that should be reserved for Sir Garry but for no apparent reason.Yet Virat Kohli has chosen to show great respect to Colin de Grandhomme. He got out to him in New Zealand last year. Then played and missed here. Played out three straight maidens. The consensus here is this: Kohli has prepared so much against high pace that this nagging pace and equally nagging line and length in seaming conditions is a bit of a blind spot. And that is the beauty of international cricket: a blind spot – I hesitate to call it a weakness – can emerge from anywhere.Kohli’s response has been the most fascinating. He has not tried to stamp his authority. He has looked Mitchell Johnson in the eye and hooked him all over MCG. Here he is forced to play out de Grandhomme. And he has. There is a good chance if he goes driving it will come off, and Kane Williamson will be forced to take de Grandhomme off. But there is also a good chance he might nick one. Or play uppishly to cover. He has not taken that risk. He wants the scoreboard and the team score to stamp his authority. This is a master batsman acknowledging an unlikely nemesis and doing whatever it takes to not give him his wicket. And de Grandhomme’s pace and line is the worst possible pace and line of you are looking to leave balls. Kohli has defended 15 and left alone eight of the 31 balls he has faced from de Grandhomme. Thirty-one balls, five runs, one dismissal is not a pretty reading for this match-up, but Kohli knows it is the final India scorecard reading that matters.

10.30amLooking at an 11am startThe inspection is over, and we are looking at a half-an-hour delay because of the wet outfield. An 11am start is what we are hearing of.

10amHow you doin’?

After the high of a finale-fitting but brief contest yesterday, how you doin’? How is the appetite for more? We are not yet sure of a timely start, though. We are hearing of an inspection at 10.20am. The problem seems to be the amount of overnight rain and the lack of sun in the morning to dry it out. We will keep you updated about that and more.Since the time Andrew Miller posted the above-quoted tweet, the covers have come off so at least the signs are positive.
