Faz parte do futebol.

Inter may now be forced to sell "world-class" France star to Chelsea

Chelsea could reportedly complete the signing of a "world-class" World Cup star in the summer transfer window, with his club under pressure to raise funds through player sales.

Chelsea transfer news

The Blues have been linked with a number of new signings of late, as they look to quickly forget about what has been a hugely disappointing season at Stamford Bridge. Many expected positive strides to be made under Mauricio Pochettino, but there has been nowhere near enough progress on show, highlighting the need for further changes to the squad this summer.

One player who Chelsea are believed to be in pole position to sign is former Celta Viga ace Gabri Veiga, who is now plying his trade at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli. The Spaniard could want a return to the European game this summer and the west Londoners have emerged as a strong option for him, with Pochettino a big admirer of his.

The Blues are also one of the Premier League clubs reportedly interested in signing Barcelona centre-back Ronald Araujo, who is also wanted by Manchester United. He is one of the most impressive defenders in La Liga currently, but could look for a fresh challenge in the summer. With Thiago Silva turning 40 this year and other players flattering to deceive, the Uruguayan could be a game-changing addition.

According to another rumour, contact has also been made with RB Leipzig and France central defender Castello Lukeba, in what could be a deal worth in and around £77m. The 21-year-old has shone at club level this season, making 29 appearances in the Bundesliga and averaging 2.7 clearances per game.

Chelsea could sign "world-class" attacking ace

According to a report from Spain, Chelsea are in the mix to sign Inter striker Marcus Thuram this summer, with his current club possibly even being forced to move him on at the end of the season: "The French striker has impressed in his debut season and his market value makes him a desired target for clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea. Inter could be forced to consider offers for him."

Thuram is a player with genuine pedigree who could be a fantastic signing by Chelsea, having registered an assist in France's 2022 World Cup final defeat to Argentina. VfL Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schafer has called him a "world class striker" in the past, while former manager Daniel Farke said of him: "Marcus is in excellent shape.

"He has all the qualities to fill this position well. He’s still getting used to that central striker role. It’s still about running paths, but we’re working on that.” Farke added that Thuram is already “an exceptional player of the highest international class.”

This season, Thuram has scored 12 goals and registered seven assists in Serie A, en route to Inter winning the Serie A title, and he has the ruthlessness that has been sorely missing in Chelsea's attack throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

Mykhailo Mudryk to Arsenal takes fresh twist as Chelsea stance revealed

Arsenal could now have a fresh opportunity to sign Mykhailo Mudryk after eventually missing out on the forward to Chelsea in 2023.

Arsenal's serious chase for Muydrk explained

The north Londoners were in hot pursuit of Mudryk in January last year, with reliable news outlets like The Guardian even claiming Mudryk wanted to join and were in serious transfer talks.

Negotiations with Shakhtar Donetsk were both lengthy and complicated, with London rivals Chelsea also chasing a multi-million-pound deal for the 23-year-old. While Arsenal had been in discussions for a while, their west capital rivals eventually beat them to Mudryk's signing by "offering a package with the type of appealing and achievable bonus payments that Shakhtar were demanding" (Charles Watts).

"Before Chelsea arrived in Turkey, we almost agreed with Arsenal that there was no chance to close (the deal)," said Shakhtar executive Sergei Palkin to The Athletic at the time.

"When they proposed the final offer of €70million plus €30million (in add-ons), we sat down and started to talk internally about how it will be fulfilled in terms of the payments, the fixed part and the bonus issues. We realised we will not close this deal (with Arsenal). I said to Edu that I did my best but it was not possible.

"When Chelsea arrived, they just called and said, ‘OK, we know you negotiated with Arsenal, we know you are close with some kind of figures. We want to meet’. I said, ‘OK, let’s meet’. I told Muydrk, ‘If I do not sell you in winter, we will definitely sell you in the summer’. I said, ‘Maybe you will cost even more in summertime’. We were ready to accept different scenarios. We would not be rushed."

Eventually, after hijacking Arsenal's deal for Mudryk, the Blues confirmed his signing for a Ukrainian-record £88.5 million.

However, fast-forward to now, and his stay at Stamford Bridge hasn't exactly been the stuff of legend just yet. This season, he's bagged three goals and two assists with the vast majority of his appearances coming off the bench. A far cry from how he burst on to the scene at Shakhtar, there are even reports that Chelsea could consider selling Mudryk already.

Arsenal emerging as main candidates for Mudryk

In a fresh twist, it appears as if Mikel Arteta could give the £100,000-per-week forward another chance to make an Emirates Stadium move.

Indeed, as per reports out of Spain, Chelsea's stance is they're contemplating a definitive sale or to loan the player out so he can rediscover his best form. In a surprise update, Arsenal are named as one of the "emerging" main candidates to sign Mudryk this summer.

It is unclear now as to where he would fit into the side, but the player's form at Shakhtar could be a clear indicator that Arsenal would land a pretty exciting player who could thrive under the right development.

Fabrizio Romano shares more bad news on the injury front from Liverpool

In the latest stop on Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool farewell tour, the Reds found themselves at Wembley up against Chelsea for the third time in the German's tenure. And like those two previous occasions, neither side could get the job done in the full 90. Instead, the stage was set for Virgil van Dijk to become the late hero in extra time. But that's not to say that the Carabao Cup final didn't issue Klopp another frustrating blow.

Liverpool injury news

Ever since Klopp announced that this would be his final season in charge at Anfield, the Reds have suffered injury after injury – blows which could eventually decide just where the Premier League title ends up. Sunday's Carabao Cup final laid bare for all to see just how many injury issues those at Anfield have been forced to deal with, as academy stars Bobby Clark, James McConnell and Jayden Danns were thrust into the action when Liverpool had no one else to turn to.

What's more, Conor Bradley was also forced to play in Mohamed Salah's usual role when Ryan Gravenberch came off injured in the first half. Klopp decided to bring Harvey Elliott into midfield, substitute Joe Gomez into the right-back role and then deploy Bradley into the more attacking position down the right-hand side.

Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

It was a dilemma that the Reds may be forced to solve once again too. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Klopp confirmed that Ryan Gravenberch is expected to miss the next two games.

Without yet another midfielder for games against Southampton in the FA Cup and then Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, Liverpool must once again find a way to battle to victory.

How Liverpool could replace "complete" Gravenberch

Gravenberch's injury comes at a frustrating time not only for Klopp but the player, himself, having regained some form in recent weeks. Now, however, for the next two games at least, Liverpool must turn to Elliott once again to step into midfield and get the job done, whilst hoping that Salah makes his return from injury in the frontline.

If it is not Elliott who steps up, then it wouldn't be a great surprise to see the likes of Clark and McConnell called upon in the FA Cup against Southampton after their Wembley heroics. It's some ask to replace a player of Gravenberch's ability when at his best though, and Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders was quick to remind everyone of that ability earlier this season.

Weghorst proved what a useful super-sub he could be at the Qatar World Cup, coming off the bench to score twice against Argentina and force extra-time. The last 10 Leeds United left-back signings – where are they now?

Leeds United have had issues at left-back in recent years, arguably ever since academy graduate Charlie Taylor left for Burnley back in 2017.

The Whites currently have Sam Byram and Junior Firpo in that position as senior options for Daniel Farke’s side, as they look to win promotion from the Championship following relegation last season. However, injury problems have impacted both defenders, leaving the club needing to bolster their ranks in 2024.

Unfortunately, Leeds haven’t had the best of luck when it comes to left-backs over the past ten years, with plenty of misses and not many hits, so as they enter the January transfer market in need of a new addition, what's happened to the last ten left-back signings at Elland Road?

Adam Drury

2012/13

Back in 2012, Leeds secured the services of Adam Drury after he spent more than 10 years at Norwich City. He clocked up more than 350 appearances for the Canaries and arrived with plenty of second-tier experience to bolster Neil Warnock’s side, but things didn’t go to plan for the Englishman.

Drury featured 18 times for Leeds in just over a year and went on loan to Bradford City in 2013/14 before retiring from professional football at the end of that campaign.

Stephen Warnock

2012/13

With Drury struggling, Warnock turned to another experienced left-back in Stephen Warnock, who penned a two-and-a-half-year contract at Elland Road on deadline day in January 2013.

The former Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa full-back was a regular straightaway in Yorkshire and ended up staying at the club until 2015, even replacing Jason Pearce as club captain towards the end of his stint.

He left for Derby County in 2015, with Taylor coming through the Leeds academy and taking his place in the first-team. Warnock, after retiring in 2018, now features regularly as a pundit on Sky Sports.

Alfonso Pedraza

2016/17 (loan)

With Taylor becoming a regular for the Whites between 2015 and 2017, Leeds were quiet in the transfer window for a few years when it came to full-back additions. They did turn to the loan market under Garry Monk in 2017, with Alfonso Pedraza joining on a temporary basis from Villarreal.

The Spaniard was actually utilised further forward as a left-winger, making 14 appearances for Leeds before returning to Villarreal after the Whites missed out on the play-offs.

Now, Pedraza is known as a left-back for Villarreal and has gone on to become a regular for the La Liga side, approaching 200 games for his current employers.

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson

2017/18 (loan)

A new season and a new manager in Thomas Christiansen, Leeds once again turned to the loan market as they looked to replace Taylor, with Cameron Borthwick-Jackson arriving from rivals Manchester United.

However, things didn’t go to plan for Borthwick-Jackson, and after starting the first Championship game of the season, didn’t play for the Whites in the league again, with his last appearance coming in an FA Cup defeat to Newport County. The Englishman went on to play for Scunthorpe United, Tranmere Rovers, Oldham Athletic and Burton Albion but moved to Poland last summer to join Slask Wroclaw.

Ezgjan Alioski

2017/18

Initially coming in as a winger from Swiss side Lugano, Ezgjan Alioski has arguably been the club’s best left-back signing over the past 10 years.

The North Macedonia international was transformed into a full-back under Marcelo Bielsa and helped take the club to the Premier League in 2019/20, before also playing his part as the club recorded an incredible 9th place finish in their first season in the top flight.

Since leaving Elland Road in 2021, the 31-year-old moved to Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli and also went on loan to Fenerbahce, where he has continued to ply his trade at left-back.

Laurens De Bock

2017/18

Another full-back who joined during the 2017/18 season was Laurens De Bock, with Victor Orta securing his services from Club Brugge in January in a permanent transfer.

The Belgian only played seven times for Leeds and was quickly sent out on loan to KV Oostende, before joining Sunderland, ADO Den Haag and Zulte Waregem on temporary deals, eventually joining the latter on a free transfer. Now, De Bock is in Greece with Atromitos, with his move to Leeds being another one to forget.

Leif Davis

2018/19

Former Leeds defender Leif Davis.

Davis was brought to Leeds by Bielsa from Morecambe back in 2018 and initially was viewed as an academy addition, although he was a regular in and around the first-team matchday squad during the Argentine’s tenure at Elland Road.

The youngster made 14 senior appearances for the Whites, two of which came in the Premier League before he moved to Bournemouth on loan.

He completed a permanent move to Ipswich Town in 2022 when the Tractor Boys were in League One and the Whites were still in the Premier League, and now, that deal looks to be a mistake from Leeds. Davis has played a starring role for Ipswich over the last 18 months, becoming a creative outlet from left-back.

Barry Douglas

2018/19

Free-kick specialist Barry Douglas was seen as the star left-back addition ahead of Davis prior to Bielsa’s first season in charge, joining from Wolves on a permanent transfer.

However, the Scot never lived up to expectations at Elland Road, failing to score a goal and registering five assists in 44 games. Injury issues also impacted his stay in Yorkshire, although he was part of the squad that won promotion. After leaving Leeds in 2021 for Lech Poznan, Douglas is still with the Polish side and has made more than 100 appearances for the club, although his deal is up at the end of the season.

Junior Firpo

2021/22

Leeds United defender Junior Firpo.

Leeds were calling out for a left-back addition in the Premier League, which resulted in Junior Firpo arriving from Barcelona ahead of the club’s second season in the top flight.

However, like many that have come and gone, things haven’t worked out for the Spaniard, who has been in and out of the side due to various injury problems.

The 27-year-old has managed more than 50 appearances in a Leeds shirt but has also been out with knee, hamstring and ligament problems, failing to help the club stay up last season as a result.

Sam Byram

2023/24

Leeds defender Sam Byram.

With a shortage at left-back over the summer, Farke brought Sam Byram back to Elland Road, over six years after he left Leeds for West Ham. The former right-back has been transformed into a left-back in recent years with Norwich City, and a free transfer materialised after he proved his fitness in pre-season.

Byram began the campaign as a regular at left-back for Leeds, but unfortunately, minor injury issues have once again returned, which leaves the Whites on the search for another left-back.
