An inevitable outcome, but Langer was let down by Cricket Australia

It was always going to be difficult for a long-term solution after the August meltdown yet there are also wider issues

Alex Malcolm06-Feb-2022It is hard to make sense of what has just happened in Australian cricket. The coach of a team that has recently won the T20 World Cup, the Ashes, and had ascended to No. 1 in the Test rankings resigned after a token six-month contract extension offer amongst a whole heap of angst, whispers, and unanswered questions.Justin Langer has started yet another 14 days of home isolation due to Western Australia’s Covid-19 border rules, having arrived home for the first time in six months, and he may have a sense of déjà vu.He may well feel the same sense of anger and betrayal at what has unfolded as he did when he was locked up in an Adelaide hotel room in August last year. This moment was always coming after what took place during those two weeks. A bizarre incident on the August T20I tour of Bangladesh, in which Langer was a minor player, led to reports that sparked a public referendum on his ability to coach the Australian men’s team. It led to private crisis talks with Australia’s three playing leaders, Tim Paine, Pat Cummins and Aaron Finch, and CA chief executive Nick Hockley and then chairman Earl Eddings. The depth of concern among the playing group for parts of Langer’s coaching style ran deep. Deeper than the “faceless few” that Langer’s manager James Henderson referred to on Saturday. Deeper than just a New South Wales clique that many have accused of knifing him. Langer felt surprised and shocked by the feedback having thought he had worked through the previous issues that had been raised with him after the Test series loss to India.Related

Langer apologises for being 'too intense' in resignation letter

Justin Langer resigns as Australia coach after rejecting short-term extension

Ponting labels Langer resignation 'a sad day for Australian cricket'

Who could be in the running to replace Justin Langer?

The moment CA made the decision to back Langer in to see out his contract was the moment they were headed towards this conclusion. The sticking plaster got them through the summer but it was not a long-term solution. That Australia won the T20 World Cup and the Ashes was a spanner in the works. If they had been bounced out of the World Cup in the group stage, having slumped to seventh in the T20I rankings in the lead-in, then Langer may not have been coach for the summer, and the decision could have been more easily justified on results. But Langer did what Langer does when his back is against the wall. He confronted the issues head-on holding 30 individual zoom meetings with players and staff and allowed them to air their grievances. He took the feedback on board and relinquished the tight control he had on the team, allowing a more collaborative approach in preparation and planning.

The result is CA has burnt a legend of Australian cricket badly. CA will argue the price Langer has paid is the best thing for the men’s high-performance model moving forward. On Saturday, Hockley spoke of a transition in how the team is coached. It will be of little solace to Langer

Some of the team would argue that the results that followed were because Langer moved to the periphery. He would argue his change in approach and evolution as a coach on the back of their feedback was more than enough to justify a long-term extension given the results. The CA board sided with the former but it seems were not willing to tell Langer directly he was surplus to requirements and the measly six-month offer forced his hand.Of CA’s many failings in this saga, questions need to be asked about the high-performance structure above Langer – currently led by head of national teams Ben Oliver who was appointed in 2019 – that appears not to have been sufficient to monitor the team’s evolution. Oliver, who has a long-standing relationship with Langer from days at WA, holds a wide remit which grew larger when high performance boss Drew Ginn left last year. CA does not have a senior director of coaching which a lot of sporting clubs in Australia and globally have. The fact the chief executive and chairman had to get involved during the August stand-off highlighted the void.Great organisations are built on strong and sound leadership. Langer is a strong leader but he will feel like he has been let down after all that he has done for CA.What he has built cannot be undersold. Sandpapergate was the team’s nadir, and he was given a license by CA in 2018, two chief executives and two chairmans ago, to rebuild the team as he had done with Western Australia and Perth Scorchers back in 2012.He did that. He managed Steven Smith and David Warner back into the fold through strong, consistent but caring communication. He made players accountable for their practice habits and behaviours, and the standards within the team have rarely been higher. The selection communication became infinitely better. George Bailey’s appointment has been a huge part of that but Langer has never shirked a phone call with a player, and his constant communication with state coaches has been a hallmark of his tenure. Any notion that he is not a good coach ignores all that work behind the scenes. But the toll of that task and the workload as a pseudo-one-man band in the first two years of his tenure was stress on both sides. The symptom of stress was a disconnect between some players, staff and the coach on the back of some emotional moments and a fracture in those relationships has caused this outcome. Those that have whispered privately for Langer’s removal will argue he did not utilise the resources around him. Langer will argue he did not have the right resources around him that he could trust in the early part of his tenure. No one within CA was able to manage the push and pull of those views and bring the whole group closer together. The result is CA has burnt a legend of Australian cricket badly. CA will argue the price Langer has paid is the best thing for the men’s high-performance model moving forward. On Saturday, Hockley spoke of a transition in how the team is coached. It will be of little solace to Langer. What is clear is this group of Australian players wants a collaborative group of coaches that complement one another. Langer and former players are arguing that one strong voice is needed to control the message. The era of franchise cricket has changed that notion. The workload of an international player and head coach means that one voice can wear thin across 10 months a year, particularly in bubbles. Players source technical, mental and physical advice and mentoring from a multitude of places year-round. The modern Australian players also prefer a becalmed environment to one that is hyperfocussed at all times and at all costs.Plenty of Justin Langer’s former team-mates, including Steve Waugh, have been critical of the handling of the situation•Getty ImagesThe team can operate with a model where there is a group of specialist coaches and consultants that can be utilised where needed and rested when needed. One voice will need to sit above it all in a management capacity but they may not be expected to be ever-present given the unprecedented schedule that the Australia men’s team is about to embark on over the next two years. It will require flexibility and teamwork to make it work and innovation and proper resourcing from CA to carry it out.The players will be given what they want, but they and CA now must deliver on it. They have bet the farm on themselves after burning the man who helped save them from themselves four years ago. Results did not matter for Langer in the end, but they will for CA after what has just happened.

Guardians vs. Tigers Prediction, Odds, Probable Pitchers for Monday, July 8 (Trust Cleveland on Road?)

The Cleveland Guardians have opened up a six-game lead in the AL Central so far this season, and they’ll look to keep that going against a division opponent – the Detroit Tigers – on Monday.

Detroit enters this matchup on a three-game winning streak, but it is still six games under .500 and has a negative run differential through 90 games.

The biggest issue for the Tigers has been their offense, as they rank 26th in OPS and 21st in runs scored so far this season.

Both of these teams are starting pitchers that haven’t been on the mound much in 2024, but the Guardians are slightly favored on the road.

Here’s a look at the odds, probable pitchers and a best bet for this AL Central clash on Monday.

Guardians vs. Tigers Odds, Run Line and Total

Run Line

  • Guardians -1.5 (+114)
  • Tigers +1.5 (-135)

Moneyline

  • Guardians: -148
  • Tigers: +124

Total

  • 8.5 (Over -108/Under -112)

Guardians vs. Tigers Probable Pitchers

  • Cleveland: Gavin Williams (0-1, 11.25 ERA)
  • Detroit: Keider Montero (1-2, 6.60 ERA)

Guardians vs. Tigers How to Watch

  • Date: Monday, July 8
  • Time: 6:40 p.m. EST
  • Venue: Comerica Park
  • How to watch (TV): FS1
  • Guardians record: 56-32
  • Tigers record: 42-48

Guardians vs. Tigers Key Players to Watch

Cleveland Guardians

Jose Ramirez: A five-time All-Star, Jose Ramirez is having a great 2024 season, hitting .271 with 23 home runs, 76 runs batted in and 16 stolen bases. Ramirez is just one home run shy of matching his 2023 season total, a huge boost to this Cleveland lineup.

Detroit Tigers

Riley Greene: The Tigers outfielder is really coming into his own, hitting .261 with a team-leading 17 home runs this season. He also has a team-best .356 on-base percentage. The Tigers need more offensive help to really turn things around in 2024, but Greene is keeping them somewhat afloat right now.

Guardians vs. Tigers Prediction and Pick

This is a really tough game to bet strictly off of the starting pitching.

Gavin Williams made his season debut for the Guardians on July 3, and it did not go well. He gave up seven hits, two walks and five earned runs in a loss to the lowly Chicago White Sox – one of the few teams with a worse offense than Detroit this season.

However, Williams isn’t the only starter in this matchup that has struggled in 2024. Keider Montero enters this matchup with a 6.60 ERA in three starts, although he did turn in his best outing of the season his last time out (6.1 innings of two-run ball) in a win over the Minnesota Twins.

Despite that, I’m going to take the Guardians to pull off the win on the road.

Detroit currently is three games under .500 at home in 2024, and the Tigers and Guardians both may need to rely on their bullpens to win this game. That’s where a massive advantage exists for Cleveland, which ranks No. 1 in the league in bullpen ERA (2.59) in 2024.

The Tigers (4.26 bullpen ERA) simply can’t compete in that department, and I wouldn’t be shocked if Montero gives up a few runs since his Fielding Independent Pitching is still up over 6.00 in three starts this season.

Cleveland has been one of the best teams in baseball, so I’ll gladly take this short price on Monday for it to pick up a win.

Alongside Fullkrug: Nuno must bin Potter's big-money West Ham flop

The international break is finally coming to an end this weekend, and West Ham United will be looking to continue their good form.

After a somewhat rocky start to life in the London Stadium dugout, Nuno Espírito Santo finally got a tune out of the Hammers before the break, beating Newcastle United and Burnley.

Those victories have done wonders for the atmosphere around the club, but even so, there is plenty of work to be done in the coming months.

Moreover, the board need to help the Portuguese coach overhaul the squad, and one way they can do that is by moving on one of Graham Potter’s worst signings, alongside Niclas Füllkrug.

The latest on Niclas Füllkrug

While some fans wanted Fullkrug to leave West Ham in the summer, the German decided to stay put and fight to turn things around.

However, like the rest of the team, he started this season in dire form and then, within two games of Nuno’s reign, tore a muscle, which has kept him out of the last four matches.

During that period, it became clear that the former Borussia Dortmund striker wanted to leave the club, and now, transfers expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that he will, and has already been in talks with sides from Germany and elsewhere.

On one hand, it could be seen as a shame that the Irons will be losing a German international after just a season and a half at the club.

However, on the other hand, this is a move the club need to facilitate for everyone’s sake, as describing the 32-year-old’s time in the capital as disappointing would be an understatement.

For example, since making his move to the club in the summer of 2024, he has scored just three goals and provided two assists in 27 appearances, totalling 1262 minutes.

Worse yet, he failed to score or assist a single goal in the seven appearances prior to his injury this season.

For whatever reason, the international marksman has looked like a totally different player in Claret and Blue from the one who racked up 25 goal involvements in his last season in Germany.

Therefore, getting rid of him in January would be best for all parties, which is unfortunately something that could be said about another international in West Ham’s squad.

The West Ham flop Nuno needs to axe

While it took a little while for them to settle in, it would be fair to say that most of West Ham’s summer signings have improved the squad.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

El Hadji Malick Diouf, for example, is a tremendous attacking full-back, Kyle Walker-Peters is great cover and even Callum Wilson has scored a couple of goals and is fine as a low-cost option.

However, one player who wasn’t low-cost and certainly has not improved the squad is Mads Hermansen.

Potter and Co paid Leicester City around £18m for the Danish international in the summer, and unfortunately, that fee is looking worse and worse with each passing game week.

For example, on his competitive debut for the club, he conceded three against Sunderland, then let in five at home to Chelsea the following week.

It was after the game against the West Londoners that Jamie Redknapp argued that he “needs to be changed”, and iconic commentator Ian Darke described the 25-year-old’s start to life in East London as “horrible.”

He then kept his first clean sheet against Nottingham Forest, but the next game saw him let in another three goals, this time at home to Tottenham Hotspur.

Since then, the 25-year-old hasn’t been anywhere near the starting lineup, and in his place, Alphonse Areola has reminded the club that while not the most spectacular of keepers, he can do a job.

Therefore, when the winter window opens, the board should be looking to recoup as much as they can on the former Foxes star, as he’s clearly not good enough to be the number one, and he cost too much and is too unreliable to be a number two.

Ultimately, it might be ruthless, but for the good of his own career and the squad, West Ham need to ensure Hermansen follows Fullkrug out the door in January.

West Ham flop was compared to Pirlo, now he's "National League standard"

He has shown no Pirlo-esque ability since moving to West Ham United.

Not just Chermiti: Rohl must axe Rangers man who's "the English Neymar"

Old Firm derbies are always occasions to savour, but this Sunday’s meeting could hardly be more jam-packed with narrative.

Prior to this year, both Rangers and Celtic had never previously changed managers in the same season, only for Glasgow’s big two to do so in the same month during a bonkers October.

Brendan Rodgers’ shock resignation on Monday means, 20 years after departing, Martin O’Neill will be in charge of the Hoops while, in the opposition dugout at Hampden, this will be only Danny Röhl’s fourth game as Rangers boss.

The German has overseen back-to-back Premiership wins this week, beating Kilmarnock at Ibrox and then Hibs at Easter Road on Wednesday, and would truly get supporters onside with victory in this weekend’s semi-final, thereby facing either St Mirren or Motherwell in the final on 14 December.

If Röhl is going to lead the Gers to victory, he must make changes to his team victorious in Leith in mid-week, leaving out an underwhelming summer signing once compared to Neymar.

Youssef Chermiti's start to life at Rangers

Fair to say, when Rangers signed Youssef Chermiti from Everton for £8m on deadline day, potentially rising to £10m with add-ons, a few eyebrows were raised.

This makes the Portuguese under-21 international the second-most expensive signing in the club’s history, behind Tore André Flo, surpassing Ryan Kent’s post-liquidation record of £7.5m.

This is despite the fact that, during two seasons at Everton, Chermiti failed to score a single goal, making 24 appearances for the Toffees, albeit these did total a miserly 295 minutes.

The 21-year-old then scored his first senior goal for anyone since May 2023 by bagging the clinching third against Kilmarnock at Ibrox last Sunday.

This earned him the start in Edinburgh on Wednesday, but he did not impress, touching the ball only 33 times, losing possession on 13 occasions and mustering only one shot, as per Sofascore, even if his good work to set up Danilo’s goal, substituted with 13 minutes to go and replaced by Bojan Miovski.

Nevertheless, Chermiti has simply not shown enough to suggest he can cause Celtic’s back-line problems atop Mount Florida, meaning he should begin Sunday’s game among the substitutes.

He isn’t the only member of the Rangers forward line who needs to be replaced, however…

Rangers' Neymar-esque star yet to shine

When Mikey Moore arrived at Rangers this summer, he did so with a massive reputation.

Then-manager Russell Martin praised an “outstanding young player”, sporting director Kevin Thelwell asserted that he will “enhance our attacking unit”, while Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout labelled the “absolute top talent” as “the English Neymar”.

However, he is yet to live up to these sky-high expectations, as the table below documents.

As the table documents, Moore is yet to make much of an impact in Glasgow, still awaiting his first goal for the club, while his two assists came against Alloa in the League Cup and Dundee United when Steven Smith was in caretaker charge a fortnight ago.

The Englishman is renowned for his creativity, dribbling and flair by those who follow Tottenham’s youth teams, but he hasn’t showcased much of that north of the border to date.

Having been introduced at half time last weekend, Moore started for the first time under Röhl in mid-week, but did not grasp this opportunity.

He registered just 39 touches in 65 minutes, completing two out of two dribbles and forcing Hibs goalkeeper Raphael Sallinger into a save, but creating no chances for others, failing to link up very much with Danilo or Chermiti, thereby replaced by Thelo Aasgaard shortly after the hour mark in Edinburgh.

As a result, former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday asserted “Moore hasn’t shown me anything that tells me that Rangers should be developing a young Spurs player rather than developing their own”.

Thus, given the importance of Sunday’s Glasgow derby, Röhl surely has better options at his disposal.

Djeidi Gassama’s five goals for the club to date will surely earn him a spot in the starting line-up, while both Oliver Antman, who has missed the last two matches due to illness, and the aforementioned Aasgaard have shown more promise since arriving.

Chalkboard

Thus, it would frankly be a surprise if either Chermiti or Moore were lining up to take on Celtic come 2 o’clock on Sunday afternoon, given that Rangers stand a better chance of victory with alternatives spearheading their attack.

Chermiti upgrade: Rohl readying Rangers approach for "dangerous" £1m gem

As Danny Röhl seeks to strengthen his Rangers attacking options, should they sign a £1m rated gem who’s better than Youssef Chermiti?

Five wickets in five balls! Curtis Campher creates history

He achieved the feat for Munster Reds against North-West Warriors in the Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Jul-2025

Curtis Campher took five wickets in five balls•Cricket Ireland

Ireland allrounder Curtis Campher has become the first man in professional cricket to take five wickets in five balls. He achieved the feat for Munster Reds against North-West Warriors in the Inter-Provincial T20 Trophy, finishing with 5 for 16 from 2.3 overs.Campher, the Munster Reds captain, took his five wickets across his second and third overs as Warriors slumped from 87 for 5 to 88 all out in their chase of 189. Jared Wilson, the first of the five wickets, was out off the penultimate delivery of the 12th over when Campher got the ball to swing in and crash into off stump. Next ball, Graham Hume was trapped lbw on the back foot as another inswinger hit him on the pads. That put Campher on a hat-trick at the start of his next over, and it came when Andy McBrine miscued a slog towards deep midwicket on the first ball of the 14th over. The wicket-taking streak continued when No. 10 Robbie Millar was out caught behind first ball, trying to poke at a delivery outside off stump, after which No. 11 Josh Wilson couldn’t keep the ball from hitting the stumps as Campher came around the wicket.”Because of the change of overs, I wasn’t really sure what was happening,” Campher said of his achievement. “I just kind of stuck to my guns and kept it real simple and luckily it kind of went off.”

When asked if he would have been able to do six in six if there was another batter to come, Campher said: “No, I don’t think so. It is what it is. Take the rough with the smooth. Just happy to be out there in the sun.”This was Campher’s second match after a finger injury had ruled him out of the ODI and T20I series against West Indies. In his comeback match, against Leinster Lightning on Tuesday, he had scored 57 off 35 balls but did not bowl. On Thursday, too, he scored 44 off 24 balls before his five-for.”Performances aside, it has been really good just to be around the boys,” he said. “When you get injured, it’s a bit of a dark place, when you get into the gym and stuff like that. So it has been really nice, just been treated with the weather too. So I have been really enjoying myself and putting pressure on myself to do well and it has kind of made me work for the last little bit.”Campher, who is also part of an elite list of bowlers to take four wickets in four balls in T20 internationals, however, is not the first person to achieve this feat. That honour belongs to Zimbabwe Women allrounder Kelis Ndhlovu who took five wickets in five balls for Zimbabwe U-19 against Eagles Women in the domestic T20 tournament in 2024.

£150k-p/w Man Utd star now looks like the player Antony was supposed to be

Manchester United’s heavy spending over the past couple of years has been massively underwhelming, with their funds often being splashed on players not up to the demands of the Premier League.

The Red Devils have spent over £700m on new additions on new additions in the last three years, but it’s safe to say those signings have failed to live up to expectations.

Ruben Amorim is the latest man to try and get the best out of the current crop of players, but like those before him, he’s struggled to be a hit at Old Trafford.

The 40-year-old has only achieved a 40% win rate since taking the reins back in November last year, losing 20 times in his 48 outings across all competitions.

However, he rapidly made up his mind about one player, quickly offloading him after his appointment and allowing him to move on to pastures new.

Antony’s failure to impress at Man Utd

Back in the summer of 2022, United supporters were hugely excited by the arrival of winger Antony from Ajax, with the Brazilian joining the club for a fee in the region of £86m.

However, their excitement looked to be worthwhile, subsequently scoring on his debut against Arsenal at Old Trafford – but that was as good as it got during his spell in England.

He racked up a total of 96 appearances for the Red Devils, but only managed to find the net on 12 separate occasions – eight of which came in his first season.

The 25-year-old only made nine appearances under Amorim, only two of which came from a starting position, before joining Real Betis on a season-long loan in the second half of 2024/25.

In his 26 appearances for the LaLiga outfit, Antony registered 14 combined goals and assists, helping them reach the Europa Conference League final – before suffering a hammering at the hands of Chelsea.

He would rejoin the side on a permanent basis this summer, subsequently ending his three years in Manchester, but also seeing the hierarchy losing a huge chunk of their investment.

The board agreed to offload him for just £21.5m including add-ons, but it has allowed one other player to follow his role and potentially lead the club to success in the near future.

The Man Utd player who looks like Antony was supposed to be

There’s no denying that the deal for Antony will go down as one of the worst in United’s history, with huge money being wasted on a player who was ultimately not up to the level required of the Premier League.

Manchester United'sAntonyduring the warm up before the match

The Brazilian is only part of the reason why the club have been in such a dire situation, but he was once seen as the player to drag them out of the hole – something which he evidently failed to do.

It’s crucial that the hierarchy use such a deal as a stark reminder of the risks they face when spending big on new additions within the transfer market.

However, the board did spend big in the transfer market during the recent window, splashing a fee in the region of £71m on the signature of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.

The Cameroonian international netted 20 goals for the Bees during the 2024/25 campaign, subsequently leading to his move – but the similarities to Antony are there for all to see.

Both are left-footed talents who like to cut inside off the right-hand side, but there’s real hope that the new addition can impress and take the side to new levels – something which Antony failed to do.

Mbeumo, who earns £150k-per-week, has already hit the ground running in Manchester, scoring twice in his opening six appearances for the club – including in the Premier League victory against Burnley.

His underlying stats further highlight the talent he’s already demonstrated, with the 26-year-old desperately needing to continue on his current trajectory in the North West.

Mbeumo, who’s been labelled a “superstar” by one analyst, has registered 1.3 shots on target per 90, along with 1.9 chances created per 90 – able to go alone or find a teammate within the final third.

He’s also completed 60% of the dribbles he’s attempted, whilst also notching 6.3 touches in the opposition box per 90, constantly offering a nuisance to the opposition defenders.

It may only be early days for Mbeumo at Old Trafford, but the signs are all positive for the attacker, hopefully continuing on his current path and leading the side to future success in various competitions.

Should he continue thriving, he would be a phenomenal addition at £71m, subsequently allowing the fanbase to forget about the disastrous deal to land Antony a couple of years ago.

Over-rate offences in IPL not to result in captain's suspension anymore

Patidar, as the designated team captain, had to bear the responsibility of RCB’s slow over-rate, even though Jitesh Sharma was stand-in captain for the match with Patidar, back after an injury, playing as a batter only. This is similar to how Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson was fined INR 24 lakh for a second offence for the franchise, even though Riyan Parag was stand-in captain during their first infraction. While a third – and subsequent – slow over-rate offence in any upcoming game would lead to a heavier fine, Patidar – or any IPL team captain – will not be suspended, as was the case till IPL 2024. The rule was amended ahead of IPL 2025, although Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya missed his team’s season opener because his suspension had carried forward from last season.
