Everton enquire to sign "brilliant" £17m star as rival club stalls on deal

Everton are readying themselves to bring in more arrivals under David Moyes and have now made an approach for a new striker, according to a report.

Everton plotting to make more signings

Continuing their pre-season preparations, the Toffees suffered a 1-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park ahead of their trip to the United States for the Premier League Summer Series.

Reacting after a disappointing day at the office, new signing Mark Travers believes his side will become stronger over the coming weeks once fitness is restored at Finch Farm.

Sheffield United's Callum O'Hare in action with Middlesbrough's MarkTravers

He stated: “It’s really good to get 90 minutes under my belt. I’d say it’s a disappointing result, but we’re still early in pre-season. The lads are just getting their fitness levels up. I’m really excited to get my first game early in pre-season and I’m looking forward to the rest of pre-season now.”

Of course, part of the improvement to come will take shape in the form of signings at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and Everton have entered the race to sign Celtic forward Daizen Maeda following his 33-goal return last season.

However, Tottenham Hotspur, Brentford and West Ham United are also keen on the Japan international, who could become a new addition to their forward line after Thierno Barry arrived from Villarreal.

Meanwhile, Douglas Luiz and Conor Gallagher may strengthen the Toffees’ midfield. Respectively, Juventus and Atletico Madrid could be tempted by the prospect of selling either player for considerable financial gain.

Right now, it still feels like the Friedkin Group have plenty of work to do in a transitional summer, but Everton may feel they could have gained an edge in the hunt for another striker signing.

Everton make approach for Rangers star Hamza Igamane

According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri on X, Everton have made an approach for Rangers striker Hamza Igamane by means of an enquiry. At the same time, Feyenoord and Udinese have also emerged as suitors for the Morocco international.

LOSC Lille appeared in pole position to bring him to France. However, their deal with the Scottish Premiership outfit is now on hold after struggling to find a breakthrough in negotiations despite already agreeing personal terms.

Last term, the 22-year-old scored 16 times in 46 appearances across all competitions, leading to Derek Ferguson labelling him “brilliant” after an effort in a 3-0 win away at Ross County.

Everton appear like they are looking to take a foothold in the race for his signature, but any movement may depend on whether Rangers are willing to budge from their £17 million valuation of Igamane, which has been widely reported.

After Tierney: Celtic now "in talks" to sign the next Hatate

Celtic are set for a very busy summer in the transfer market.

Kieran Tierney is back, re-joining the club six years after leaving, and supporters cannot wait to see one of their favourite players back in green and white hoops again.

Now, could Brendan Rodgers be about to add further defensive reinforcements?

Celtic targeting a new defender

The Hoops are very active in the market at the moment with a move for Swedish star, Benjamin Nygren, all but confirmed.

So, who’s the Hoops’ next target?

Well, according to a report by Anthony Joseph of Sky Sports, Celtic “are in talks” with J League club Albirex Niigata over the possibility of signing Hayato Inamura.

He describes the 23-year-old as a “left-footed centre-back” who is also capable of playing at left-back.

Inamure came through Japan’s college system, representing Maebashi Ikuei High School and then Toyo University, before joining Albirex Niigata a year ago, making 33 appearances to date for the side currently in the J League relegation zone.

So, could he become the latest Japanese player to call Parkhead home?

How Inamura could replicate Celtic's Japanese heroes

As the table below outlines, Celtic have a rich tradition when it comes to Japanese players, many of whom have enjoyed massive success.

Of course, the vast majority of the Japanese players Celtic have had were signed by Ange Postecoglou, but this tradition goes back to Shunsuke Nakamura in the mid-2000s, who certainly made a huge impact, described by Tom Hancock of Four Four Two Magazine as one of the best free-kick takers of all time.

In the more modern era, few Celtic players of any nationality have been as impressive as Reo Hatate, making 142 appearances in hoops to date, scoring 27 goals and providing 28 assists, winning eight major trophies.

Manager Rodgers described the midfielder as “top class”, adding that he has been “absolutely brilliant” since the boss re-joined the club in 2023.

Meantime, Martin Crawford of Breaking the Lines labelled him the ‘best player in Scotland’, describing Hatate as a ‘complete, elegant talent’.

Signed for just £1.4m, these performances have seen the midfielder’s valuation skyrocket, with Transfermarkt estimating he is worth around £10m, hence why the Celts’ actually rejecting a £10m bid for Hatate from a Ligue 1 club last summer, according to The National.

While no fee is currently known for Inamura, the club would surely hope he could make a similar impact in Glasgow, which would result in a similar exponential increase in value.

Analyst and scout Will Glavin describes Inamura as “tactically intelligent…composed and comfortable building from the back”, praising his defensive discipline and “positional awareness”, concluding that this deal is a “smart, low-risk investment”. That’s certainly true of the deal to bring Hatate to the club all those years ago under Postecoglou. It was low-risk and he’ll undoubtedly pay the club back when he leaves.

Stephen McGowan of the Herald outlines how he will provide competition for Auston Trusty and Liam Scales, seeking to start as the left-sided centre-half, while also able to cover at left-back when Tierney requires a breather.

So, this once again appears to be a sensible signing from Celtic and, even though Inamura is very inexperienced, this does not mean he cannot be the club’s latest Japanese superstar.

Liverpool close to agreeing deal for "amazing" £34m man to leave Anfield

Liverpool are making bold moves on the market and could offset some of their early ventures by selling one of their rising stars, according to David Ornstein.

Liverpool seeing plenty of movement in both directions

Arne Slot is the man in charge at Anfield and is already a hero among supporters, and his stock is only likely to have risen recently given the Reds have signed Jeremie Frimpong and more arrivals are expected to follow.

Florian Wirtz is next in line, putting pen to paper on a deal until 2030 that will generate plenty of headlines around Merseyside.

Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez is also on his way to Liverpool, and it shouldn’t be too long before the Hungarian international becomes the latest shiny new addition to be rolled out at Anfield.

Marc Guehi’s contract situation at Crystal Palace has put the Reds on alert, and there could now be potential for further activity to unfold if the England international is open to joining the red half of Merseyside amid alternative interest from Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.

He could surpass Salah: Liverpool now prepared to sign another £100m star

Liverpool are in the market for a centre-forward this summer.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 19, 2025

Streamlining a squad that deserved every element of their success last term isn’t always easy, but Slot doesn’t appear to be someone fond of sentiment in any way, shape or form.

In light of this, Liverpool are now closing in on an agreement that would see one of their stars head to Germany this summer.

Ornstein: Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah set for Bayer Leverkusen

According to Ornstein, Jarell Quansah is close to agreeing a move to Bayer Leverkusen from Liverpool on a deal that could be worth in excess of £34 million.

Personal terms aren’t expected to be an issue, and despite no formal bid being in play yet, all parties are ‘progressing’ in their mission to get a deal done.

Labelled “amazing” by teammate Alexis Mac Allister, Quansah made 25 appearances last campaign as the Reds stormed to the Premier League title, though an exit may now be the best course of action for his career.

Coming in as a pure profit sale, the 22-year-old’s departure is likely to be heralded as smart business from FSG, even if it will bring his 17-year association with the club to an end if he were to exit.

Could be another Sterling: Chelsea lead Arsenal in race for "superstar"

One of the oldest and most bitter rivalries in English football is between Chelsea and Arsenal. It is fair to say that there is no love lost between the two clubs, who hail from West London in Chelsea’s case, and North London for the Gunners.

Naturally, over the years, there have been players who have represented both clubs. One of those is currently playing at the Emirates Stadium, specifically Raheem Sterling, who is on loan from Chelsea. Perhaps the two biggest names are Ashley Cole and Cesc Fabregas, both of whom played first for the Gunners and then for the Blues.

Interestingly, the top-flight pair are battling it out to sign the same player this summer, rather than one man featuring for both, reigniting the rivalry off the pitch once more.

The player Chelsea want to sign ahead of Arsenal

There are plenty of good market opportunities this summer for players who are out of contract. One of the most prominent examples is Trent Alexander-Arnold, who will leave Liverpool on a free and is set to join Real Madrid.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Well, Chelsea are set to go head to head with Arsenal to sign Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane. According to reports from Sky in Germany, the Blues are one of the clubs ‘ready for the winger’ this summer, if he doesn’t sign a new deal at the Bundesliga champions.

They seem to be ahead of the Gunners in the race, who are thought to have ‘distanced’ themselves from the move, instead targeting a younger winger.

Leroy Sane for Bayern Munich

As for Chelsea, the report suggests that ‘much depends on qualification for the Champions League’, but if they secure that, they have an excellent shot at bringing Sane to the club.

Why Sane could be another Sterling

29-year-old Sane is certainly no stranger to the Premier League. He has featured in the English top flight before as a Manchester City player, scoring 25 goals and grabbing 30 assists in 95 appearances. In total, he played three seasons and won the Premier League twice.

If he can replicate at Stamford Bridge what he did at the Etihad Stadium, Chelsea fans would surely be delighted. Sane was a chance creation machine.

Across his three full Premier League seasons at the club, he averaged 1.8 key passes per game in 2016/17, followed by 2.2 in 2017/18 and 1.9 in 2018/19, according to Sofascore.

Yet, as time has gone by, the winger has not quite had the same impact at Bayern as he did at City. Across all competitions for the newly crowned Bundesliga champions this term, he’s managed 13 goals and six assists in 45 games.

Whilst there has been a level of consistency in the top division of German football, with 11 goals and six assists, Sane struggled in the Champions League. In 13 appearances, the Schalke academy graduate scored once and didn’t register an assist, with his goal coming in a 9-2 thrashing over Dinamo Zagreb.

With that inconsistency creeping in, perhaps there is a worry that Sane will struggle at Chelsea just as Sterling did. There are certainly similarities between the pair, given they both played for Man City in one of the most successful sides in Premier League history.

However, for Chelsea, Sterling wasn’t really as effective. He scored 19 goals and grabbed 15 assists in 81 games for the West Londoners, and never really played a consistent role in the side, constantly floating around different positions on the pitch.

There were some highlights, however, including this strike against Luton Town last season.

Perhaps these deals are just too similar for Chelsea. With Sterling a high earner, on £325k per week at Stamford Bridge last season, and Sane on roughly the same at Bayern, £323k per week as per Capology, it would also save the Blues some money.

However, he can be a “superstar” on his day, as football scout Antonio Mango described him, and there is no doubt about his quality. Perhaps Chelsea are willing to take the bet that Sane will be able to replicate his incredible output last time he played in the Premier League.

Burnley look to see of Premier League clubs to sign "clever" rising star

Burnley are fighting for promotion to the Premier League and Scott Parker has wasted no time in profiling targets ahead of the summer window, per reports.

Burnley edge ahead of Championship title rivals

Following a chaotic afternoon of Championship action, Burnley emerged at the summit following a vital 2-1 victory over Coventry City on Saturday courtesy of a double from Jaidon Anthony.

Sheffield United’s unexpected slip-up at Oxford United and Leeds United’s dropped points on their visit to Luton Town have played into the Clarets’ hands, with promotion specialist Scott Parker licking his lips at the remaining fixture schedule.

Nevertheless, Burnley also have an eye on next season and potential recruits once the window opens for business. Per reports, out-of-contract Rangers midfielder Tom Lawrence could move to Turf Moor on a free transfer.

Despite the Clarets’ appeal as a serious promotion candidate, West Bromwich Albion, Middlesbrough, Coventry City and Wrexham are among other destinations on the table for the Wales international.

On the same token, West Brom star Grady Diangana is on Burnley’s radar and they have been urged to put forward a proposal for the versatile attacker by David Prutton.

Ultimately, any concrete information on high-profile targets will need to wait until the summer. Parker’s men are in a good position with the end of the campaign near, but there is plenty of work to do before celebratory champagne can be cracked open at Turf Moor.

Either way, Burnley are making tracks to lure a rising EFL star to Lancashire despite competition from Premier League clubs for his signature, per recent developments.

Burnley eyeing Bristol Rovers midfielder Kofi Shaw

According to reliable reporter Alan Nixon via The 72, Burnley are eyeing a move to sign Bristol Rovers midfielder Kofi Shaw alongside Premier League duo Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.

Born in 2006, the 18-year-old has made ten appearances for the Gas this campaign, while his loan spell at Yeovil Town earlier on yielded two goals and an assist.

BySean Markus Clifford Apr 3, 2025

Versatile by nature, the youngster is capable of playing across various roles in the engine room, on either flank or as a foil for the main striker.

Labelled “a clever player” by boss Inigo Calderon, he would likely be deemed as one for the future at Turf Moor, but stockpiling homegrown talent for years to come is a strategy that could save millions down the line if worked correctly.

It remains to be seen the sort of fee he would be available for if Burnley do follow up on their initial interest. One imagines he could be attainable for a relatively inexpensive fee, though only time will tell if a deal is to come to fruition.

Ballance's Test comeback, spotlight on Lara and Houghton, and a test case for Test cricket

There’s no WTC context to the Zimbabwe vs West Indies series, but there’s still plenty to look forward to

Firdose Moonda03-Feb-2023Gary Ballance is back playing Test cricketGary Ballance, the Zimbabwe-born, England-capped top-order batter, has been out of the Test arena for longer than Zimbabwe have waited to play West Indies in this format. His last appearance was in July 2017 against South Africa and brought an end to the first phase of a Test career that had 1000 runs in its first 17 innings and yielded fewer than 500 in its next 25. Since then, Ballance has been one of the central characters in the Yorkshire racism scandal. He admitted to and apologised for using the word P*** when talking to Azeem Rafiq, and then took a lengthy break from the game to manage his mental health.Related

Ballance set for Zimbabwe Test bow against West Indies

Ballance was released from his county contract, which was due to run until the end of the 2024 season, early and returned home to Zimbabwe at the end of last year. He signed a two-year deal with Zimbabwe Cricket and joined a long list of players who have headed back to the country from England, including Kyle Jarvis, Brendan Taylor (both since retired) and Blessing Muzarabani, in a bid to boost the national set-up. Ballance made his debut for Zimbabwe last month, and was capped in T20Is and ODIs, but it’s the longest format where he is expected to make his biggest contribution. With a first-class average of 47.31, four Test hundreds to his name, and years in the county circuit, Ballance will bring experience and gravitas to a line-up that is only rarely exposed to the rigours of Test cricket.Dave Houghton’s first Test series as coachAnother prodigal son in the Zimbabwean set-up is coach Dave Houghton (who is also related to Ballance), who came back into the fold before the T20 World Cup qualifiers last year. Houghton, who previously captained Zimbabwe at the 1992 World Cup and coached them in 2009, was tasked with turning around the fortunes of a team that had lost a series to southern African counterparts and associates Namibia and were at risk of missing a fourth successive ICC event. He inspired a remarkable turnaround in which Zimbabwe not only went to the 2022 T20 World Cup but made it out of the first round into the Super 12s and stunned eventual finalists Pakistan. They also beat Bangladesh for the first time in an ODI series after nine years (that’s six series). Every player interviewed – including Sikandar Raza, who was included in the ICC’s ODI and T20I teams of 2022 but will not feature in this series because of T20 franchise commitments – has credited Houghton for changing the environment, giving them freedom to express themselves, and encouraging them to play attacking cricket. Now, he has to work his magic in the format Zimbabwe have the least experience in. They have not played Test cricket for 18 months, since they hosted Bangladesh and lost heavily.Brian Lara, here with Kyle Mayers, has his work cut out•CWI MediaWhat sort of impact will Brian Lara have?West Indies have problems of their own after their dismal performance at the T20 World Cup, where they did not advance out of the first round. On their subsequent tour to Australia, they were blanked in both the T20I and Test series.A report by CWI warned that West Indies cricket could “cease to exist as an entity” if they continued to lose players to T20 leagues and failed to cultivate incentives for representing the islands, especially in Test cricket. The report detailed a new strategy where West Indies would use a select group of white-ball players in red-ball cricket in order to fast-track their development.None of them are part of the touring party to Zimbabwe, though, but another familiar face is. Brian Lara will begin his role as West Indies’ performance mentor on this trip, a job aimed at assisting with both the tactical and technical skills of the team. Much like Houghton, Lara has his work cut out. But he will be comfortable with what should be a fairly soft landing in Zimbabwe before moving south to neighbouring South Africa for a full tour.Shannon Gabriel returns; Alzarri Joseph comes full circleA West Indian bowling attack is usually worth keeping an eye on, especially this time, because it features two names that will be an important part of their rebuilding.Shannon Gabriel returns to the squad after a 14-month absence – a consequence of being injured and then overlooked. He was their second-leading wicket-taker in ODIs last year and had his most successful year in T20s in 2022 – he took 46 wickets at an average of 19.54. Joseph is exactly the kind of player West Indies could lose to leagues unless they incentivise and manage him properly and this series could be the start of that process.Shannon Gabriel returns to the West Indies squad after a 14-month absence•AFP via Getty ImagesA test case for Test cricket outside the big boysThanks largely to Bazball, we know that Test cricket is alive and well, but we don’t know if that’s the case outside of a select few teams. The big three, along with New Zealand, Pakistan and to a lesser degree, South Africa, still put the longest format on a pedestal. But when it comes to Zimbabwe and West Indies, where hosting Test matches is costly and the rewards are slim, this format may still be running cold. This series will give us a gauge.Zimbabwe Cricket has put an effort into marketing it and expects to see a healthy clutch of spectators, not least because there hasn’t been any Test cricket in Bulawayo since the West Indies trip of 2017.If you think that’s overly optimistic, it’s not. The Harare Sports Club was well supported during Zimbabwe’s recent series against Ireland and there’s a sense that Zimbabweans are warming to the game again, thanks to the recent form of the national side. Zimbabwe fans have formed their own supporters union, named Castle Corner after the beverage, and are campaigning for crowds to pour into the Queens Sports Club.Whether the series will be well-followed outside of Zimbabwe remains to be seen. It is being played at the same time as the start of Australia’s Test series in India, the Women’s T20 World Cup and the PSL, and the end of the SA20, the ILT20 and the BPL, which leaves cricket lovers spoilt for choice.

Has Jimmy Anderson now taken more wickets against West Indies in Tests than anyone else?

And how often has a batsman been dismissed twice in one day by the same bowler?

Steven Lynch04-Aug-2020Is it correct that Jimmy Anderson has now taken more wickets in Tests against West Indies than anyone else? asked Jamie Bright from England

James Anderson’s final wicket in the recent series gave him 87 in Tests against West Indies, beating the old England record of 86, held for more than half a century by Fred Trueman (86). In third place now is Stuart Broad, with 73.The list of wicket-takers in England-West Indies Tests is a bit lopsided, as no fewer than seven West Indies bowlers finished with more than Anderson’s 87 wickets. Five of them reached 100, with Curtly Ambrose leading the way with a remarkable haul of 164, at an average below 19.Anderson now holds the England record, but two bowlers from other countries have taken more West Indian wickets in Tests: Glenn McGrath captured 110, and Kapil Dev 89.Which player scored 343 not out in a first-class match but finished on the losing side? asked Michael Seymour from France

This supremely unfortunate batsman was Essex’s Peter “Percy” Perrin, who made 343 not out in Chesterfield in 1904. But it was in vain: Derbyshire almost matched Essex’s 597, then bowled them out for 97 in the second innings – Perrin, perhaps believing he’d done his bit, managed only 8 – and knocked the runs off to win.Perrin hit 68 fours in his innings, a record that stood for 90 years, until it was broken by Brian Lara in his 501 not out. According to a recent book by the Derbyshire historian John Shawcroft, Essex’s scorer said that 14 of Perrin’s boundary hits landed the ball onto the cinder path surrounding the turf or beyond it. Nowadays these would have counted as sixes (the rule was not changed till 1910), and he would have finished with 371.Perrin made almost 30,000 runs in an Essex career that lasted over 30 years. He never played for England, although he was later a Test selector, eventually chairing the panel.Kemar Roach was dismissed twice by Stuart Broad on the third day of the third Test. How often has this happened? asked Siddharth Doshi from India

That double dismissal of Kemar Roach by Stuart Broad at Old Trafford last week appears to be the 147th time a bowler has dismissed the same batsman twice on the same day in a Test. It had happened to Roach before: Australia’s Josh Hazlewood removed him twice on the third day in Hobart in 2015-16.Five South Africans fell twice on the same day to England’s Johnny Briggs in Cape Town in 1888-89. This daily haul was equalled on a wet pitch at Lord’s in 1934, when five Australians were dismissed twice on the third day, four of them by Hedley Verity. And in Harare in 2005, five Zimbabweans succumbed twice on the second day against New Zealand.Barry Richards played only four Tests before South Africa’s sporting exclusion but made 508 runs and two centuries in them•Getty ImagesI was looking at Barry Richards’s record – if we use four Test matches as the base, is he the batsman with the most runs and most centuries? asked Hemant Kher from the United States

If you mean people who played only four matches in all, then Barry Richards is indeed top with 508 runs – second, with 353, is another South African from that 1969-70 series, Lee Irvine. The only other man with two centuries from four Tests or fewer is Abid Ali, of Pakistan, who has two from three matches so far – but he’ll presumably play again soon.If you mean who of everyone had the most runs after four Tests, then Richards comes in eighth – Sunil Gavaskar is top with 774 (all in the West Indies in 1970-71). George Headley made 703, Conrad Hunte 577, Javed Miandad 573, Vinod Kambli 544, KS Ranjitsinhji 516, and Herbie Collins 515. Gavaskar and Headley had four centuries; Hunte, Arthur Morris and Mohammad Azharuddin three. Richards is one of 46 batsmen who made two centuries in their first four Tests.Shivnarine Chanderpaul was involved in 77 Test losses. Who holds the corresponding records for one-day and T20Is? asked Gordon Brine from South Africa

You’re right that Shivnarine Chanderpaul took part in the most Test defeats – 77 – a record he inherited from his long-time team-mate Brian Lara, who was on the losing side 63 times. Five others have lost a half-century of Tests: Sachin Tendulkar (56), Alastair Cook (55), Alec Stewart (54), Jimmy Anderson (53) and Mohammad Ashraful (50 of 61 matches played). The record for most defeats in one-day internationals is a round 200, by Tendulkar: this is perhaps not terribly surprising, as he played more such matches (463) than anyone else. Behind him come Sanath Jayasuriya (193 defeats), Mahela Jayawardene (186) and Shahid Afridi (170). In all, 65 players have been on the losing side in 100 or more ODIs.Three Bangladeshis top the list of most defeats in T20Is. Mahmudullah has played in 56 losses, and Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim Iqbal in 52 each.
